Uddhav demands Maha CM’s resignation after HC order in land allotment case

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray on Tuesday demanded the resignation of Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde citing a Bombay High Court order seeking status quo on allotment of land in Nagpur when the latter was a minister in the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government.

Addressing a press conference in the city, where the winter session of the state legislature is currently going on, Thackeray, a former CM, dubbed the matter as serious and maintained his party will raise it in both Houses.

The Nagpur bench of the High Court has ordered status quo on a decision taken by Shinde, when he was a minister in the MVA government (November 2019-June 2022), of allotting land meant for slum dwellers to private persons in the city.

A division bench of Justices Sunil Shukre and M W Chandwani, in its order passed on December 14, noted that the court since 2004 has been monitoring the land allotments made by the Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) to politicians and other influential individuals.

This was after a petition was filed by Nagpur-based social activist Anil Wadpalliwar, alleging the NIT, a local planning authority constituted under the state government’s urban development department, gave away land to politicians and others at meagre rates. Shinde was the urban development minister in the MVA government led by Thackeray, who heads one of the factions of the Shiv Sena.

The Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) leader said Shinde should resign from the post of chief minister as the land allotment was done when he headed the urban development department.

Thackeray said the matter was subjudice and the state government should not intervene in it. ”We oppose this intervention by the government and the minister related to this case is now the chief minister. Hence, there is a possibility that when the government puts its submission in the court there could be intervention by them,” said the former CM.

CM Shinde doesn’t want to talk about Maha-K’taka border issue due to fear: Aaditya Thackeray

Amid the Maharashtra-Karnataka border row, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) leader and former state minister Aaditya Thackeray on Tuesday attacked Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde saying he did not talk about the issue due to fear.

“We want a discussion on the Karnataka-Maharashtra border issue in State Assembly. We want to know what Maharashtra Chief Minister said in the meeting held in Delhi. Karnataka Chief Minister is aggressive on this issue but our Chief Minister does not want to talk about it due to fear,” Aaditya Thackeray told reporters here.

The first day of the winter session of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly began with an uproar by the opposition, with MLAs of the Mahavikas Aghadi holding placards protesting on the Vidhan Bhavan premises over the Maharashtra-Karnataka border dispute.

MLAs of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Congress and Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) joined the protest. Leader of Opposition Ajit Pawar raised the issue of the border dispute in the Assembly and said “A Lok Sabha member from Maharashtra has been stopped from entering Belgaum. In a meeting with Home Minister Amit Shah it was decided that no one would be stopped from going there, then how can the collector there take such a decision.”

Responding to the issue raised by Pawar, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said, “For the first time the Home Minister of the country mediated the border dispute, he has taken this issue seriously, we have presented the side of the border residents to him, Amit Shah has had put forth his point in front of the border dispute, now there should be no politics on the border dispute, we should stand together with the border residents.”

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis aligned with CM Shinde’s remarks and said that the government will look into the matter.

Tension prevailed in the border areas of Belagavi on the Maharashtra Karnataka border after members of the Maharastra Ekikaran Samiti (MES) and Nationalist Congress Party staged a protest on Monday demanding they be allowed into Belagavi.

Belagavi Police denied permission to MES to conduct its Maha Melava at the Vaccine Depot ground in Tilakwadi and clamped prohibited orders in Tilakwadi Police Station jurisdiction. Section 144 has been imposed in the area and heavy security was deployed at the site of the MES convention which was scheduled to take place on the first day of the Winter Session of the Karnataka Assembly today.

According to police, Karnataka Chief Minister BS Bommai has made it clear that no ministers from Maharashtra will be allowed entry into Belagavi.

The Maharastra Ekikaran Samiti also known as the Maharashtra Integration Committee staged a protest after authorities in Karnataka denied permission to allow a few leaders from Maharashtra into Belagavi. Supporters of MES claim that Belagavi belongs to Maharashtra and should be given to Maharashtra.

The border dispute between Maharashtra and Karnataka goes back to the implementation of the State Reorganization Act, of 1956. The then Maharashtra government had demanded the readjustment of its border with Karnataka. Following this, a four-member committee was formed by both states.

The Maharashtra government had expressed willingness to transfer 260 predominantly Kannada-speaking villages, but the proposal was turned down by Karnataka. Both governments later approached the Supreme Court to expedite the matter.

A session court here has discharged gangster Chhota Rajan in a case related to the 1999 murder of an alleged member of the Dawood Ibrahim gang. The court allowed Rajan’s discharge plea on December 17. The detailed order became available on Tuesday.

As per the prosecution, Anil Sharma, an alleged member of the Dawood gang, was shot by Rajan’s men in suburban Andheri on September 2, 1999.

Sharma was allegedly part of the team that had carried out a shootout at JJ hospital here on September 12, 1992. The shooting had been allegedly carried out by the Dawood gang to kill a rival gang member.

Sharma was killed due to the rivalry between Dawood and Rajan gangs, the prosecution claimed. But the judge, in his order, noted that the prosecution “did not bring or collect any incriminating evidence against this applicant (Rajan) except the words allegedly uttered by the informant (complainant).

“Upon perusal of the charge sheet, there is no prima-facie evidence available to prove a conspiracy of this applicant along with the other accused to commit the murder of Sharma,” the court added.

As there was no sufficient material to frame charges, Rajan was entitled for discharge, the court said.

Rajan, lodged in Delhi’s Tihar jail since his deportation from Bali in Indonesia in 2015, is facing trials in several other cases. He has been convicted in the journalist J Dey murder case.

Shelar also questioned if the vacant posts in the hospital will be filled immediately and whether the procurement of wrong medicines and delay in medicine will be investigated. Shinde in his reply announced that an inquiry will be set up in the procurement of medicines and also assured that the vacant posts will also be filled immediately.

The Chief Minister accepted this demand as well and said that necessary instructions will be given to the BMC. MLA Parag Alavni and MLA Yogesh Sagar participated in this discussion.

Earlier in the day, the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) MLAs protested against the state government outside the state assembly in Nagpur.

The Lokayukta will be appointed in the state on the lines of the Lokpal at the Centre. A committee of five former judges will be part of Lokayukta. The Chief Minister and the cabinet will be under the ambit of Lokayukta.

India’s Rajasthan state, ruled by the main opposition Congress party, will halve the price of cooking gas for poor households from April as it seeks to cushion them from the pain of high inflation ahead of local elections next year.

The country’s annual retail inflation stood at 5.88% in November much higher than the central bank’s target of 4% though it has eased from 6.77% in October due to a softer rise in food prices.

The state is one of several to announce measures to help households in the midst of a cost-of-living crisis after food and fuel prices surged in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Rajasthan’s government said late on Monday it would provide 12 canisters of cooking gas for 500 rupees ($6) to poor families a year.

One cylinder can typically sustain a family of four for a month. “This will reduce the financial burden on the common person in this era of inflation,” Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said in a tweet.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, whose cross-country march is passing through Rajasthan, hailed the move on Twitter and urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to “serve the people suffering from inflation”.

The finance ministry told parliament on Monday it was trying to check inflation through measures like curbs on exports of wheat and rice and a reduction in import duties on lentils.

Rajasthan has also unveiled plans to supply households with 50 units of electricity every month for free.

Measures by other states include Uttar Pradesh’s decision to cut electricity tariffs and distribute 1,000 rupees in cash to the poor. Modi in 2016 launched a programme giving free cooking gas connections to poor families. Energy companies controlled by the federal government provide the first refill free of cost to such families. ($1 = 82.7900 Indian rupees)
