A Delhi court on Saturday discharged former JNU student leader Umar Khalid and ‘United Against Hate’ (UHA) member Khalid Saifi in connection with the Northeast Delhi riots case.

However, the court did frame charges against former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor Tahir Hussain, his brother Shah Alam and others in the case.

The FIR in the case in question was registered at Khajuri Khas police station. The case pertains to an incident of arson in a parking lot in the Chand Bagh area of N-E Delhi and assault on police personnel and others who had taken shelter from rioters there.

Additional Sessions Judge Pulastya Pramachala issued the order, discharging Khalid and Saifi in the case.

The former JNU student leader, whose name had earlier come up in connection with the chanting of alleged anti-national slogans on JNU campus, had already secured bail in the riots case along with Saifi.

However, they continue to be lodged in judicial custody in connection with a ‘larger conspiracy’ in the 2020 riots. Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) Madhukar Pandey told reporters that the court discharged the Khalid and Saifi after noting that they are already facing prosecution in the ‘larger conspiracy’ case.

He further informed that the other accused persons, including the AAP councillor, were charged with offences related to rioting and other sections.

This case was registered on the complaint of Delhi Police constable. While the case was filed at the Kjajuri Khas police station, the Crime Branch of the Delhi Police later took over the probe.

The case was registered under sections IPC sections 109, 114, 147, 148, 149, 153-A, 186, 212, 353, 395, 427, 435, 436, 452, 454, 505, 34 and 120-B, along with sections 3 and 4 of Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act and sections 25 and 27 of the Arms Act.

It was alleged that a large crowd was pelting stones near Chand Bagh Pulia on February 24, 2020, prompting the police personnel at the scene to take shelter inside a nearby parking lot.

The parking lot was near the residence of the former AAP councillor. It was alleged that a mob broke open the gate of the parking facility and assaulted people who were sheltered inside.

The mob also allegedly set some vehicles on fire. In the violence that erupted in northeast Delhi in February 2020, a total of 53 persons died and about 700 were injured.

The prime minister will inaugurate the completed stretch from Nagpur to Shirdi, while the remaining stretch of the expressway will be finished in the next six months, he said.

The ‘Hindu Hrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg’ is a six-lane access-controlled highway. It is the second expressway in the state after Mumbai-Pune Expressway.

“It is a matter of joy and pride for us that PM Narendra Modi will be inaugurating the Nagpur-Mumbai Samruddhi Expressway. “I feel that this expressway will bring ‘samruddhi’ (prosperity) to Vidarbha, Marathwada and the entire Maharashtra,” Fadnavis added.

A woman and her friend have been arrested for killing the former’s husband, police said on Friday. The woman, Kavita and her friend Hitesh Jain were arrested by Mumbai Crime Branch for murdering her husband Kamalkant Shah.

Police said she was mixing arsenic and thallium in her husband’s food. He was hospitalised on September 3 due to slow poisoning and died 17 days later.

Crime Branch registered a case against both the accused under sections 302, 328 and 120(B) of IPC and arrested both of them.

Police produced the accused in the court which sent them to police custody till December 8. On September 3, 2022, Kamalkant was admitted to Bombay Hospital for treatment and remained admitted till September 19 when he died.

During treatment, the same team of doctors conducted a heavy metal test of Kamalkant’s blood and the report of that test further deepened the doubt of the doctors.

The level of arsenic and thallium found in the body was unusual for any human being. Doctors informed the Azad Maidan Police Station and the Azad Maidan Police registered a case and handed it over the case to the Santacruz Police Station for further investigation.

The investigation of the case was handed over to the Crime Branch Unit 9 instead of the Santacruz Police Station.

The Crime Branch started the investigation and took all the medical reports including the statements of the family members including the wife, as well as collected information related to Kamalkant’s diet.

Planning with Hitesh, a conspiracy was hatched to remove her husband. For a long time, arsenic and thallium were being mixed in Kamalkant’s food and drink very cleverly.

These metals are already present in blood inside the body, but if it is more than normal, it acts as a poison and this is what happened with Kamalkant.

Due to the slow poison he was getting in his food and drink, his condition continued to deteriorate. He was admitted to Bombay Hospital on September 3 and was treated till September 19 but could not be saved. Further investigation is underway.

At least two people were killed and several others injured in a blast near the venue of senior TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee’s scheduled rally in West Bengal’s Purba Medinipur district, police said on Saturday.

India’s foreign exchange reserve rises for third straight week

India’s foreign exchange reserves during the week that ended on November 25 rose by USD 2.89 billion to USD 550.14 billion, the Reserve Bank of India data showed on Friday evening. This is the third consecutive week of rising reserves.

During the week that ended on November 18, the country’s forex reserves were at USD 547.25 billion, data showed.

According to RBI’s latest data, India’s foreign currency assets, which are the biggest component of the forex reserves, rose by USD 3.0 billion to USD 487.28 billion.

However, gold reserves during the week declined by USD 73 million to USD 39.93 billion.

Barring the past three weeks, the forex reserves have been falling for months now because of RBI’s intervention in the market to defend the depreciating rupee against a surging US dollar. Also, rising costs of imported items also necessitated the higher requirement of reserves for trade settlement.

Typically, the RBI intervenes in the market through liquidity management, including through the selling of dollars, with a view to preventing a steep depreciation in the rupee.

Overall, India’s forex reserves had declined sharply ever since Russia invaded Ukraine in late February when imports of energy and other commodities got costlier globally.

G20 to focus on food and energy security under Indian presidency

India G20 Summit

As India formally assumes the Presidency of the Group of Twenty (G20), the issues of food and energy securities will be among the major objectives for Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Guided by the Prime Minister’s vision, India’s foreign policy has been evolving to undertake leadership roles on the global stage, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

In a significant step in this direction, India assumed G20 Presidency on Thursday, offering a unique opportunity for the country to contribute to the global agenda on pressing issues of international importance.

Last month, during his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ address, PM Modi said that assuming the G20 presidency was a huge opportunity for India and that the country must utilise it by focusing on global good.

“Friends, the Presidency of G20 has arrived as a big opportunity for us. We have to make full use of this opportunity and focus on global good and world welfare,” he said.

Prior to that at the G20 Summit in Bali, Prime Minster Modi made a strong pitch for protecting India’s energy security.

“India is taking charge of the G20 at a time when the world is simultaneously grappling with geopolitical tensions, economic slowdown, rising food and energy prices, and the long-term ill effects of the pandemic,” he said.

PM Modi’s message was again echoed in Chief Economic Advisor (CEA) V Anantha Nageswaran’s recent address. “As we have heard multiple times that the global economic environment is subject to multiple headwinds. We are not dealing with known unknowns, we are dealing with unknown unknowns,” Nageswaran said at ICRIER’s 14th Annual International G20 Conference on India’s G20 Presidency.

“Under these circumstances, the objective of the Indian Presidency will be to focus on key issues of macroeconomic vulnerabilities in the near term, which deal with food and energy insecurities that have arisen partly because of longstanding underinvestment in energy infrastructure but also because of near-term geopolitical developments,” he added.

Underlining the challenging circumstances under which India is assuming G20 Presidency, Nageswaran said one of the necessary requirements to ensure that we do a good job of the presidency is to be able to improvise and be flexible as circumstances emerge in the global economic and political landscape.

As India embarked on the role of presidency of the G20 from December 1, it will host 200-plus meetings and a similar number of ‘engagement groups’.

G20 is the premier forum for international economic cooperation representing around 85 percent of the global GDP, over 75 percent of the worldwide trade, and about two-thirds of the world population.

The G20 Summit to be held next year would be one of the highest-profile international gatherings to be hosted by India.

India’s G20 presidency will provide an international platform to highlight how the US-India economic partnership is shaping global economic growth, prosperity and resilience in the 21st century, a top American business body has said.

India formally assumed the G20 Presidency on Thursday. Welcoming India as the new president of G20, the US India Business Council (USIBC) said it will engage with the governments of India and the United States to expand the partnership for global good.

“India’s G20 Presidency will provide an international platform to highlight how the US-India economic partnership is shaping global economic growth, prosperity, and resilience in the 21st century,” it said on Friday.

Earlier in the day, US President Joe Biden said that India is a strong partner of the United States, and he looks forward to supporting “my friend Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi” during India’s G20 presidency.

“Together we will advance sustainable and inclusive growth while tackling shared challenges like the climate, energy, and food crises,” Biden tweeted.

“India has an opportunity to forge G20 action amidst unprecedented challenges,” tweeted Nisha Desai Biswal, the Senior Vice President for International Strategy and South Asia at the US Chambers of Commerce.

India’s G20 Presidency propels its role as an emerging leader in the global scenario, said Mukesh Aghi, president and CEO of the US India Strategic and Partnership Forum. ”The leadership also gives a stronger voice to the challenges faced by the developing world as New Delhi leads the way with its increasingly growing economy,” he said.

”New Delhi can strive towards building an inclusive ecosystem with holistic mechanisms to address key global issues for the private sector,” he said. The G20 or Group of 20 is an intergovernmental forum of the world’s major developed and developing economies.

It comprises Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the UK, the US and the European Union (EU). Together, they account for over 80 per cent of the global Gross Domestic Product, 75 per cent of international trade and two-thirds of the world population.

Pune police detained Swarajya members for showing black flags to Governor Koshyari

The Pune Police detained some members of the Swarajya organisation for showing black flags to Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari’s convoy on Friday.

The Swarajya members were protesting against Governor Koshyari’s remarks on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj made a few days ago.

The Maharashtra Governor on November 19 stoked a fresh controversy as he called Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj an ‘old idol’.

Addressing a function at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University in Aurangabad on Saturday, the Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari said, “If someone asks who your idol is, you don’t have to go out looking for one. You will find them right here in Maharashtra.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj has become an old idol now, you can find new ones from Babasaheb Ambedkar to (Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways) Nitin Gadkari.

“An emotive and iconic figure in Maharashtra, transcending political affiliations, the Governor’s remark on the Maratha warrior did not go down well with leaders. The statement sparked a massive furore and drew censure from Maratha organisations and opposition leaders alike. Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar slammed Koshyari over his remarks on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and said that Maharashtra Governor has crossed “all limits”.

He further sought intervention from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the matter. While addressing a press conference, Pawar had said “The Governor has crossed all limits. The President and the Prime Minister should intervene in this matter. It is wrong to give big posts to people who make irresponsible statements.”

Moreover, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s descendant and Raja Sabha MP Udayanraje Bhonsle wrote a letter to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his remarks on the Maratha warrior demanding the Governor to be sacked from his post.

“The statements made by the governor and the spokesperson of BJP are very contradictory to the beliefs of the nation it would only be appropriate if you could take measures to remove the Governor of Maharashtra. Your actions and deliberations in resolving this current standoff would go miles in restoring the confidence of the people of Maharashtra and the nation, that you stand in solidarity with the people’s belief and faith in Chh. Shivaji Maharaj. Thanking you,” read the letter.

Shiv Sena (Uddhav) leader Sanjay Raut demanded the removal of Maharashtra Governor Koshyari over the issue.
