India’s Lovlina Borgohain on Friday bagged gold medal in the women’s 75kg category at the Asian Boxing Championship 2022.
Lovlina defeated Ruzmetova Sokhiba of Uzbekistan 5:0 by unanimous decision in the final. This is Lovlina’s first gold medal on the Asian stage.
India’s star boxer’s victory is noteworthy because it is her first medal in the 75 kg division. Because her previous weight category was dropped from the Paris Olympics schedule, she has moved up from 69 kg.
Before this, Lovlina had bronze medals from the Olympics, World Championships, and Asian Championships to her name. It would appear that the Assam boxer has launched her campaign for the Olympics in spectacular fashion now that she has a gold medal in her trophy cabinet.
In addition to Lovlina, two other competitors, Parveen Hooda (63 kg) and Saweety (81 kg), also took home gold in their respective weight divisions on Friday.
Minakshi settled for silver in the 52 kg category. India now have three gold medals overall from this edition.
At the Asian Championships in 2017, only one Indian woman, Pinki Rani, took home the gold medal.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Friday welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision to release six convicts including Nalini Sriharan of the assassination case of the former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi.
“I welcome the Supreme Court Verdict on the release of six persons,” Stalin said in a tweet on Friday.
Stalin lauded the apex court’s verdict and said, “It is a historic blow to the theory of democracy.”
“This judgment of the Supreme Court is proof that the decisions and decisions of the government elected by the people should not be shelved by the governors in the appointed positions,” he said.
Being in Opposition and in Government, DMK has always given voice for the release of these people while in government, he added.
Nalini Sriharan and five others were serving life sentence terms in the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. They were set free by the SC on the grounds of having good conduct in jail.
Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated on May 21, 1991, at Sriperumbudur Tamil Nadu by a woman suicide bomber of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) group during a public rally.
The seven convicts were sentenced to death for their role in the killing. Their names included Nalini Sriharan, RP Ravichandran, Jayakumar, Santhan, Murugan, Robert Payas, and AG Perarivalan.
In the year 2000, Nalini Sriharan’s sentence was reduced to a life term. Later in the year 2014, the sentence of the other six convicts was also reduced, and during the same year, the then chief minister of Tamil Nadu J Jayalalitha recommended the release of all the seven convicts in the case.
In May this year, one of the seven convicts, AG Perarivalan was released after spending 31 years in jail.

The Supreme Court on Friday asked the collector of Satara to file a report mentioning due process followed for the demolition of alleged encroachments around Afzal Khan’s tomb in Maharashtra.
A bench of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justice Hima Kohli said that the report will be filed within two weeks.
The state of Maharashtra stated that demolition had been carried out of illegal construction and the collector could file a report.
The court asked the Collector, Satara to file a report on what structures were there, was due process followed and what kind of demolition was carried out. The state of Maharashtra informed the court that some irregularities were going on in the forest land surrounding the tomb of Afzal Khan and there was no illegality committed by the state but only following a court order.
Advocate Nizam Pasha, appeared for the petitioner in the matter.
The court was hearing the plea filed by Hazrat Mohd Afzal Khans Memorial Society seeking to direct the State of Maharashtra to ensure that no damage is caused to the tomb/dargah of Afzal Khan situated in Pratapgarh, Satara, Maharashtra.
According to the petition, since Thursday morning, ie November 10, there has been widespread belief that the Tomb of Afzal Khan will be demolished.
“A local online news channel has been running live coverage of the demolition of unauthorized structures around Afzal Khan’s Tomb in Satara, Maharashtra. Screenshots from the said live coverage show that men have climbed the roof of the tomb/dargah with the help of a ladder and are attempting to demolish it,” the plea said.
The petitioner submitted that they are apprehensive that damage will be done or the tomb of Afzal Khan may be demolished today and beseeches the top Court to issue appropriate directions to protect the tomb of Afzal Khan that has existed on site since before November, 1659.
According to petition, Afzal Khan was a general who served the Adil Shahi dynasty of Bijapur Sultanate in India and played an important role in the southern expansion of the Bijapur Sultanate by subjugating the Nayaka chiefs who had taken control of the former Vijayanagara territory.
Afzal Khan was defeated and killed by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on November 20, 1659, the petitioner said. According to the petition, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was a ruler and a member of the Bhonsle Maratha clan. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj carved out his own independent kingdom from the declining Adilshahi sultanate of Bijapur which formed the genesis of the Maratha Empire and is a duly venerated and important leader in Indian history
The Supreme Court on Friday extended its earlier order to protect the area where the ‘Shivling’ was stated to be discovered during the court survey at Gyanvapi mosque complex, Varanasi.
A bench of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices Surya Kant and PS Narasimha said its interim order of May 17 will continue to remain in operation till further orders.
The bench in its order stated, “We direct that pending further orders, the interim order dated May 17 shall continue to remain in operation till further order.”
On May 17, the Supreme Court by an interim order directed to protect the area where the ‘Shivling’ was found and granted access to Muslims for namaz shall continue in operation till maintainability of the suit is decided by the Varanasi court and thereafter for eight weeks to enable parties to pursue legal remedies.
As the interim order expires on November 12, the Hindu side has filed an application for an extension of the order.
Varanasi district court on September 12 had held that the suit was not barred under the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, 1991 and rejected the application filed by the Muslim side under Order 7 Rule 11 (rejection of plaints).
It had dismissed the plea of the Anjuman Intezamia Masjid Committee that manages Gyanvapi mosque questioning the maintainability of the suit filed by Hindu women.
The top court is seized of an appeal filed by the Committee challenging an order of Allahabad High Court permitting a court-appointed commissioner to inspect and conduct a survey and videography of the Gyanvapi mosque to which Hindus and Muslims have laid claim for the right to worship.
On May 20, the Supreme Court ordered the transfer of the case related to worship at Gyanvapi mosque from the civil judge to the District Judge, Varanasi.
On the same day, it had also extended its May 17 order of protection of ‘Shivling’. It had said that District Judge should decide the maintainability of the civil suit in the Gyanvapi-Kashi Vishwanath on priority as sought by the Committee of Management Anjuman Intezamia Masjid Varanasi.

Eknath Shinde-led Maharashtra government on Friday announced an award in the name of Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray.
Ten lakh rupees will be awarded annually in four different categories for doctors, NGOs and medical field workers from 2022-23.
Award will be given to people who work in medical field to reduce maternal and child mortality rates in the state, provide reproductive and child health innovative services, successfully implement family planning activities and implement innovative health programmes through public participation.
The announcement of the award in late Balasaheb Thackeray’s name is considered significant as both chief minister Ekanath Shinde and former CM Uddhav Thackeray claim their factions as real Shiv Sena, which was founded by cartoonist turned politician Balasaheb Thackeray in 1966.
The coalition government of late Balasaheb Thackeray’s son Uddhav Thackeray collapsed in June after Shinde’s rebellion. Shinde led a revolt against Udhav Thackeray government leading to the collapse of the 31-month-old Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government.
Subsequently, the new Maharashtra government came to power and Eknath Shinde became CM after his ten-day rebellion toppled MVA government.
Further, Eknath Shinde faction made its claim with the election commission of India (ECI) in October on Shiv Sena’s ‘bow and arrow’ symbol in view of the assembly by-poll in Maharashtra.
However, the ECI did not allot Shiv Sena’s symbol to either of the two factions. Both factions were provided new symbols during the by-poll.
ECI alloted the ‘Dau Talwarein aur Ek Dhal (Two Swords & Shield)’ symbol to the Eknath Shinde faction of Shiv Sena after allotting it ‘Balasahebanchi Shiv Sena’ (Balasaheb’s Shiv Sena) as its name.
On the other hand, ‘flaming torch’ (mashaal) election symbol was allotted to the Uddhav Thackeray faction of Shiv Sena.
The Election Commission also allotted ‘ShivSena – Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray’ as the party name for the Thackeray faction.
Civic and railway authorities, at disagreement over the crucial Gokhale bridge, which is shut to pedestrians and motorists since November 7, will meet on Friday afternoon to decide who will take on the responsibility of razing the structure above the railway lines. Over the past few days, both the agencies have refused to demolish the bridge. Meanwhile, the BMC is still to float tenders for reconstruction of the bridge in Andheri and officials said this is likely to be done within the next 10 days. The BMC has also contacted IIT Bombay to clear the design of the bridge over the railway portion at the earliest. Officials said once the contractor is in place, fabrication of the girder on the bridge’s railway portion is likely to take a minimum of three months and may go up to February 2023. Thereafter, the launching of the girder would take another two months and the top slab construction and finishing two more months.
