A brilliant knock from KL Rahul and a three-wicket haul masterclass by Mohammed Shami helped India inflict a 6 runs defeat on Australia and bundled out hosts for 180 in ICC Men’s T20 World Cup warm-up match here at the Gabba in Brisbane on Monday.

For India, Mohammed Shami bagged a stunning three-wicket haul while veteran pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar scalped two wickets. For Australia, Aaron Finch played the captain’s knock of 76 runs off 54 while Mitchell Marsh scored 35 off 18.

Chasing a target of 187, Australia got off to a good start as their openers Aaron Finch and Mitchell Marsh gathered 52 runs in five overs without losing a wicket. The 64 runs partnership stand for the first wicket was broken as Bhuvneshwar Kumar delivered a big blow to Australia dismissing Marsh for 35 off 18. Marsh’s wicket invited Steven Smith to the crease.

In the 10th over of the innings, Finch and Smith hammered Harshal Patel for 15 runs. In the 11th over Yuzvendra Chahal broke the Australian momentum as he removed Smith for 11 off 12.

Australia’s star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell then came out to bat. Maxwell slammed Chahal for 15 runs while hammering back-to-back two fours in the 13th over of the match.

Finch in lethal form destroyed Arshdeep Singh as he slammed the Indian bowler for 17 runs in the 14th over of the innings. Finch also brought up his fifty while hammering Indian bowlers all around the ground.

At this point, no Indian bowlers were able to restrict Australian batters from smashing runs. Experience pacer Bhuvneshwar gave his team a big breakthrough as he dismissed Maxwell for 23 runs off 16 balls.

In the last three overs, Australia needed 29 runs to win. Harshal Patel was brought back into the attack and he proved his captain’s decision right as he removed well-set batter Finch for 79 off 54 in the 19th over of the innings. The Australian captain’s knock was decorated with seven fours and three sixes.

At the same over Tim David was run out by Virat Kohli. In the penultimate over Australia needed 11 runs to win and Virat Kohli displayed his fine fielding as he took a one-handed catch of Pat Cummins.

On the very next ball of the over Ashton Agar was run out without opening his tally. On the fifth delivery of the over Shami bowled out Josh Inglis for one run and bundled out the hosts for 180. Shami delivered a stunning last-over spell of 2, 2, W W W W, helping India to defeat Australia by 6 runs.

Earlier, KL Rahul smashed 57 off 33 while Suryakumar Yadav scored 50 off 33 to guide Men in Blue to a total of 186/7. For Australia Kane Richardson scalped stunning four wickets while Glenn Maxwell and Ashton Agar bagged one wicket each.

Put to bat first, India got off to a decent start as their opener KL Rahul hammered Australian bowlers all around the ground, smashing 56 runs in just 5 overs of the innings.

While smashing Australian bowlers Rahul brought up his half-century in 27 balls. Skipper Rohit Sharma also shifted gears and Glenn Maxwell for a six and a four in the sixth over of the innings. At the end of the powerplay, Team India’s score read 69/0.

In the 8th over of the innings, Maxwell provided his team with a big breakthrough as he dismissed blistering batter Rahul for 57 off 33 deliveries. Rahul’s wicket invited in-form batter Virat Kohli to the crease.

Ashton Agar then provided his team with a big wicket of India captain Rohit as the batter tried to pull a deep mid-wicket shot but handed an easy catch to Maxwell in the 9th over of the innings. The India captain departed after scoring 15 runs in 14 deliveries. After 10 overs of the play, India’s score read 89/2.

New batter Suryakumar Yadav and Kohli joined hands to slam Australian bowlers for boundaries while taking singles at regular intervals. Kohli’s stint on the crease was cut short as he was dismissed by Mitchell Starc after scoring for 19 from 13 balls.

Hardik Pandya then came out to bat on the crease, but the latter could not do much as he departed after just scoring two runs on the delivery of Kane Richardson. India kept losing wickets at regular intervals as the batters struggled to play against Australian bowlers after 10 overs.

Dinesh Karthik then came out to bat. Karthik tried to pull a shot but it went straight to the fielder stationed at deep mid-wicket on the delivery of Richardson. Karthik departed after playing a cameo of 20 runs in 14 delivery.

However, Suryakumar continued the carnage on the Australian bowlers as he hammered Pat Cummins for 14 runs in the 18th over of the innings. In the last over of the innings, Suryakumar brought up his half-century off 33.

In the last over of the innings, Richardson gave India back-to-back blows dismissing Suryakumar Yadav and Ravichandran Ashwin to restrict Men in Blue to a total of 186/7 in 20 overs of the innings.

Brief score: India 186/7 (KL Rahul 57, Suryakumar Yadav 50; Kane Richardson 4-30) vs Australia 180 (Aaron Finch 76, Mitchell Marsh 35; Mohammed Shami 3-4).

BJP withdrew nomination of Murji Patel

Responding to Sharad Pawar’s appeal for the Andheri (E) bypoll to be held unopposed, Shiv Sena party president Uddhav Thackeray said the NCP chief had shown the “real culture of politics in Maharashtra” and his party would always be grateful to him.

MNS chief Raj Thackeray’s request to the BJP to withdraw its candidate is a significant development considering the fact that the bypoll is a testing ground before the BMC election for both the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), which is backed by Congress and NCP, and BJP supported by the Eknath Shinde-led Balasahebanchi Shi v Sena.

According to political analysts, MNS’s absence in the bypoll may help Uddhav’s candidate as Raj’s party mainly targets the same segment of voters as Shiv Sena by raising the son s-of-the-soil issue.

The bypoll has been necessitated due to sitting Sena MLA Ramesh Latke’s death in May. While Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) has fielded the late MLA’s widow Rutuja, BJP has nomi nated Patel.

Maharashtra BJP chief said party won’t contest Andheri East Assembly bypoll; to withdraw nomination of Murji Patel.

Ahead of his questioning by the CBI in the excise policy matter, Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Monday claimed that the case against him was “fake” and linked the development with campaigning in poll-bound Gujarat While extending support to his deputy, Delhi Chief Minister and AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal said Sisodia was going to be arrested in a bid to stop him from campaigning in Gujarat.

At his Mathura Road residence, Sisodia sought blessings of his mother as he prepared to leave for the CBI office. Several AAP leaders, including party MP Sanjay Singh and MLAs Atishi and Saurabh Bhardwaj, were present at his home.

In a series of tweets, Sisodia said, “A completely fake case has been prepared against me. Nothing was found in the raid at my residence, search of my bank lockers and enquiries made at my village. It is a totally fake case.” Sisodia is set to appear before the CBI for questioning at 11 AM in connection with alleged irregularities in implementation of the now-scrapped Excise Policy 2021-22.

The Delhi deputy chief minister, who also holds the excise portfolio in the Kejriwal government, is one of the main accused in the FIR registered in the matter by the CBI. Kejriwal also termed the case against his deputy as “fake”. “Nothing was found in the raid at the residence of Manish and his bank locker. The case against him is totally fake. He had to go to Gujarat for campaigning that’s why he is being arrested but the campaigning will not stop. Every person in Gujarat is campaigning for the AAP in Gujarat,” Kejriwal tweeted.

Sisodia also linked his questioning with elections in Gujarat, saying campaigning in the state will not stop even after he goes to jail. Every Gujarati has awakened now and everyone there is campaigning for good schools, hospitals, jobs and electricity, Sisodia said and added the upcoming polls in Gujarat will be a “movement”.

Opposition BJP and Congress in Odisha have raised questions over the timing of the BJD government’s decision to regularise services of contractual employees ahead of the November 3 bypoll to Dhamnagar assembly constituency.

The saffron camp termed the move by the Naveen Patnaik-led dispensation as “pre-bypoll drama”, while the Congress alleged that the state government abolished contractual hiring to secure votes for the ruling BJD.

“The BJD government takes such decisions when there is an election. This is part of a pre-bypoll drama. The ruling party is facing difficulties in the poll-bound Dhamnagar assembly segment,” said Leader of Opposition J N Mishra of the BJP.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had on Saturday announced that services over 57,000 contractual employees would be regularised. The decision, which will entail an additional Rs 1,300 crore per year, was taken at a cabinet meeting. Mishra alleged that the BJD government had been trying to rectify the mistake it made since 2013 by appointing employees on a contractual basis.

Senior Congress leader and Jatani MLA Suresh Routray also questioned the timing of Patnaik’s announcement. “Why did the government not make such a decision earlier? It is now clear that the BJD dispensation has regularised services of contractual employees to get votes,” he said.

Former Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee president Jayadev Jena said it is “a trick played by the BJD to woo young voters and win the Dhamnagar by-election”. BJD MLA S B Behera denied the allegations, and said it is unfortunate that opposition parties have been trying to politicise the matter when 57,000 families across the state have welcomed the decision.

While Fadnavis has admitted that the letter was sent to him in good faith, he said that he would have to discuss it with the party leadership before taking a decision.

Vinayak Raut, MP from the Uddhav-led Shiv Sena said, “We welcome this decision of MNS chief and his letter urging BJP of withdrawing their candidate. But why didn’t he discuss this when he met CM Shinde on Saturday, this is our question.”

Raut further said, “With or without his support, we are confident of winning this election.”

Vilas Potnis, MLC from the Uddhav-led Sena said, “In Maharashtra, this tradition has always been followed, that a deceased family member is given ticket on his seat and elected unopposed.”

BJP spokesperson Keshav Upadhye said,”There is no rule according to which only the deceased family should receive a ticket. But our senior leaders will decide on the letter.”

AAP Maharashtra leader Preeti Sharma Menon said, “In every party giving an opportunity to the deceased family members is their internal decision. But we have seen how politics in Maharashtra is heading, and how MLAs are brought by the BJP.”

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said “Indian Govt will be taking action against spamming and intrusion into privacy data”

The Indian government is taking action against activities like spamming and intrusion into privacy data, especially in the banking sector, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has said.

Addressing a group of Indian reporters at a news conference here on Saturday, Sitharaman said the government has withdrawn the old data protection bill and the new one is likely to come sooner.

In the meanwhile, action is being taken on spamming and unsolicited calls and messages.

The government is working intensely to contain these kinds of activities which are not right, she said. “But of course, they keep coming. It’s not as if it is all extinguished till yesterday and today nothing has happened. They keep coming up like mushrooms, but the government is very seized of this matter and efforts are on,” the finance minister said in response to a question.

Even in the newer data or digital based kind of services, which are being extended to people like the account aggregator, there is a conscious attempt to make sure that consent of the data owner is used and used for that specific purpose for which the consent is given, she said.

“There is a high level of monitoring in this, particularly in the banking sector, which I closely monitor. Even in the account aggregator where we came across some kind of misuse by some outsourced elements, we have clamped down severely,” Sitharaman said.

“You would have heard of the arrests of some people who misused these kinds of data apps for lending money. Particularly in Andhra and Telangana, we arrested a lot of nationals from one country who were misusing the data,” she said, apparently referring to many Chinese citizens. “So action is happening equally, preventive steps happening equally. But of course, that has to be kept up,”

Nihar Thackeray supports Eknath Shinde faction for upcoming Andheri East Assembly byelection

Nihar Thackeray, the grandson of Shiv Sena founder late Bal Thackeray, has said that he supports the Eknath Shinde faction of the party and is ready to campaign for the upcoming Andheri East Assembly byelection as well as the Mumbai civic body polls. He also did not rule out joining electoral politics.

The BJP, supported by the Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction, has fielded Murji Patel against the Shiv Sena Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray party’s Rutuja Latke in the November 3 byelection.

It will be the first major electoral contest in the state after Shinde’s rebellion brought down the previous Maharashtra government led by Uddhav Thackeray in June this year.

Nihar, the son of Bindumadhav Thackeray, Bal Thackeray’s eldest son, is a lawyer by profession. He is also part of Chief Minister Shinde’s legal team in the battle in the Supreme Court over which is the ‘real’ Shiv Sena.

Shinde was taking forward the legacy of his late grandfather and hence he supported the chief minister, Nihar told Agencies in an interview.

On Dussehra, when his uncle Uddhav Thackeray and cousin Aaditya addressed a rally at the Shivaji Park in Mumbai, Nihar Thackeray was on stage with Shinde, who addressed a separate rally at MMRDA ground in the state capital. Uddhav’s elder brother Jaidev and Jaidev’s former wife Smita too shared the stage with Shinde, in an apparent attempt to send out a message that barring Uddhav and his son, the rest of the family supported Shinde.

Nihar declined to comment on the fissures in the family, but said Bal Thackeray was the glue that kept it together. “If required, I will keep myself available for the bypoll and BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) polls. I will continue to extend support to Shinde ji,” he added. Bindumadhav Thackeray, producer of the 1996 hit Hindi film “Agni Sakshi” among others, died in a road accident in the same year. Nihar is married to Ankita Patil, the daughter of former Maharashtra minister Harshvardhan Patil who is now with the BJP. Asked whether he would participate in electoral politics, Nihar said, “I have not really given it a serious thought…I am a lawyer by profession. But not taking that decision does not mean I will never do it. “I am not saying it’s a complete no. I have just not given it a complete thought yet,” he said. His cousin Aaditya became only the second member of the Thackeray family to contest an election when he won from Worli Assembly constituency in 2019. Before that, Shalini Thackeray, another member of the extended family, had contested the 2009 Lok Sabha election unsuccessfully on the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) ticket. “Ever since Balasaheb passed away, I have not been an active part of the Shiv Sena or politics for whatever reasons. It did not happen,” Nihar Thackeray said. “Had there been an option, I would have definitely liked to be a part of it. It (the party) is something which my grandfather started. For whatever reasons, I was not part of it,” he added without elaborating on why he did not find any role in the Sena after Uddhav Thackeray took over. Asked about his association with Shinde, he said he met the chief minister for the first time in July this year. “Balasaheb had clearly said that he will never join hands with the Congress under any circumstances. For whatever reasons, things happened and Maha Vikas Aghadi government (of the Sena, Congress and NCP) came to power, and then…Shinde saheb decided to walk away,” Nihar Thackeray said.

The government which had been given the mandate to rule (in 2019) is now in power, he added. The Shiv Sena and the BJP had contested the 2019 Assembly elections together but fell out after the results.
