Rahul’s mails nail Peter Mukerjea’s involvement in Sheena Bora murder case?

Rahul-and-seenaIn a new twist, in the sensational Sheena Bora murder case, it has been revealed that Rahul Mukerjea supposedly wrote a mail to his father Peter which may have nailed the former media tycoon.

Rahul also mailed to his step-mother Indrani.

This was apparently after he got suspicious that Sheena had stopped her activity on Facebook.

Rahul reportedly stated in his e-mails that he had a feeling that Sheena was missing and his mails might have helped the Central Bureau of Investigation to nail Peter Mukerjea in the high-profile murder case.

“No Facebook activity, she is usually very active leaving comments and post for her friends the 21st April. Then there are the dodgy (contradictory) texts I receive on the 25th April, but no confirmation,” the e-mail reads.

“It has been more than one month now and I am sure that your are aware that I have still not heard from Sheena herself. The text message that I receive from her cellphone on 25th April expressing her desire to discontinue our relationship,” it adds.

“I can deal with a break-up myself, but this seems more like a missing persons. There may be more trouble ahead. I cannot fully accept as in the past there was instance where I had received text message from you pretending to be Pete (papa) while I was speaking to him on the phone. I have sort a legal advice in this situation and have been advised that circumstances surrounding her disappearance are characteristic of something untoward,” the e-mail further adds.

“If report goes to public domain it will raise a lot of question for lot of people. I have sort legal advice, advised that circumstances surrounding her disappearance are characteristic of something untoward. Even Sheena work place believes signature on resignation letter forged,” Rahul wrote.

Replying to Rahul, the report quotes Peter as following, “I maintain my earlier position that Sheena is free and if anyone asks you about her ask them to call Indrani they are really concerned, maybe they will feel more relaxed after that. Obviously she is clearly not keen to have anyone be in touch with her or that she is in touch with those that she wants to be in touch with. I do not see Mikhail or her folks in Guwahati getting stressed about her whereabouts. She texted you and me and Indrani back in April on the 25th and then she obviously either gone off to change everything – her Facebook page, her Skype ID and her phone number too. And when she wishes to come out in the open I guess she will. I think you are wasting your time in worrying about her. In last month if she wanted to get in touch with you she would have but you have to assume that she does not. If her so called father and friends are so concerned that why do they not call Indrani and other people particularly.”

“If you are telling them if you have no other idea, what else can I say. She has played you and now gone to something else. If I were you and have told you this just leave it and get with your life. If she wants to get in touch with you she will one day. Sometime whenever why drive yourself self into futility. If anyone needs to find out about her and calls you ask them to speak or e-mail to Indrani. May be she will be able to satisfy them that she is fine and need not worry,” the further adds.

Earlier, CBI had questioned Rahul, who handed over several documents allegedly used by Sheena Bora to ‘blackmail’ her mother Indrani Mukerjea, who is accused of murdering her.

Indrani was divorcing Peter Mukerjea, says Vidhie

Vora-DaughterIn a new revelation, in the ongoing saga of Sheena Bora murder case, Indrani Mukerjea’s daughter Vidhie told the investigating agency that her mother was divorcing Peter.

Vidhie told CBI that Indrani never liked Rahul Mukerjea and blamed him for creating suspicion.

Vidhie further told the CBI that when she asked Indrani if Sheena was her daughter, Indrani scolded her.

Not only this, Vidhie also reportedly told the investigating agencies that Indrani was divorcing former media tycoon Peter Mukerjea.

The report further says that Vidhie got an e-mail on August 28,2012 which was supposedly from Sheena.

She received another e-mail, apparently fake, on January 27, 2013.

Meanwhile, CBI questioned Rahul Mukerjea yesterday, who handed over several documents allegedly used by Sheena Bora to ‘blackmail’ her mother Indrani Mukerjea, who is accused of murdering her.

Rahul is Peter’s son from an earlier marriage.

According to investigators, Sheena, who was engaged to Rahul, was blackmailing Indrani that if she did not give her a 3 BHK flat in the city, she would expose her by telling people that she was Indrani’s daughter and not sister, as the latter had claimed.

Peter, now also an accused in the case was arrested on November 19.

Apart from Peter and Indrani, other accused in the case are the latter’s former husband Sanjeev Khanna and former driver Shyamvar Rai who have been remanded to judicial custody till December 3.

Vidhie is Indrani and Sanjeev Khanna’s biological daughter.

MMRDA spends Rs. 1.45 cr to oppose Metro’s proposed fare hike

The MMRDA has incurred legal expenses of nearly Rs 1.46 crore to oppose the fare increase proposed by Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd (MMOPL), an RTI query has revealed.

Mumbai Metro One, the public-private partnership project undertaken by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), has run into legal hassles over the fare hike proposed by it.

The current fare on the Mumbai Metro 11.4 kms Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar corridor is Rs. 10 to Rs. 40. The fare fixation committee, which was formed to recommend the new fares, has suggested a revision to Rs. 10 to Rs. 110.

The MMRDA has incurred legal expenses of Rs. 1,45,94,321 till now to oppose the unilateral fare hike proposed by the JV company, as per the information provided to RTI Activist Anil Galgali.

Galgali had sought information from the MMRDA regarding the various costs incurred by it till now on cases filed by it against the proposed fare hike of Mumbai Metro One.

The MMRDA administration, in its reply to Galgali, informed that it appointed M/s Khaitan and Co as its advocates to file cases on the fare hike proposed by Mumbai Metro One in courts and other forums, and has paid them Rs. 1,44,94,321 as fees and other expenses.

In support of the cases, MMRDA Additional Chief K Vijayalaksmi, Joint Project Director Yogita Paralkar and Superintending Engineer M C Devaroo had been present in the court, on which Rs. 1,00,000 expenses were incurred.

Thus, a total of Rs. 1,45,94,321 has been spent on advocates and officials with regard to these cases, Galgali said.

Inspite of spending such a huge amount on the cases filed by MMRDA, it has failed to get any respite in the matter, the RTI activist pointed out.

Unless and until a modification is enacted in the Metro Act, the MMRDA will have no control on the fares of Mumbai Metro One, he claimed.

Financial transaction motive behind Sheena Bora’s murder, CBI tells court; Peter Mukerjea’s custody extended

Financial transaction was the motive behind Sheena Bora’s murder, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) told a Mumbai court on Monday.

The CBI also told the court that Peter Mukerjea had disclosed during questioning investments made by him and wife Indrani in UK and India but not source of money.

On the other hand, Mumbai court extended till November 26 CBI custody of Peter in the murder case.

The CBI had sought an additional ten days remand for former Star TV CEO, who has been charged with murder and criminal conspiracy in connection with the Sheena murder case.

Previously, the CBI had said that while it had earlier booked Peter Mukerjea under several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), he had also been additionally charged under Sections 302 and 364, and would be prosecuted accordingly.

It had said that four serious charges had been levelled against him.

Earlier, on November 21, in a sensational chargesheet filed by the CBI, it was revealed that besides the financial dispute, the motive behind her murder could have been her ‘relationship’ with Peter Mukerjea’s son, Rahul.

In the chargesheet, the agency had said that the prime accused in the high profile murder case, Indrani Mukerjea, was not happy with the love affair of Rahul and Sheena.

It also stated that Rahul met Sheena at Peter’s house and their friendship grew into love.

In 2008, Sheena told Rahul that she was in fact Indrani’s daughter.

Indrani who did not approve the love affair quarrelled with Sheena and sent her to Guwahati and later, Delhi.

HC extends interim bail of 4 corporators in builder’s suicide case

The Bombay High Court extended till November 26 the interim bail granted to four corporators of the adjoining Thane city who had sought anticipatory bail in the suicide case of builder Suraj Parmar.

Justice A S Gadkari asked the four corporators of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) – Vikrant Chavan (Congress), Najib Mulla, Hanumant Jagdale (both NCP) and Sudhakar Chavan (independent) – to file a rejoinder on November 26 to a government affidavit which opposed their bail plea on the ground that they were not cooperating with police in the probe and that their custodial interrogation was required.

A vacation bench of the HC had earlier granted them interim bail on November 3 on a surety of Rs. one lakh each. They were asked to deposit their mobile phones and passports with Thane police. The corporators were also directed not to enter the TMC premises until further court orders.

Parmar, a leading Thane-based builder, had shot himself on October 7. His suicide note alleged that a nexus of corporators and officials was harassing him for bribes.

The Thane police had registered a case of ‘abetment to suicide’ and for offences of criminal misconduct under the Prevention of Corruption Act after a notebook left by Parmar in his car revealed their names as the ones who had allegedly harassed him.

Public prosecutor Raja Thakre said the petitioners were not cooperating with police and their mobiles were found switched-off. Besides, their names were found in the builder’s notebook.

However, the defence lawyer pleaded that the names of the corporators given in the builder’s notebook were erased (by the builder) and denied their involvement in the suicide. He said they were willing to cooperate with police in the probe. He also said that custodial interrogation of the applicants was not necessary.

The family of the deceased builder intervened to describe as baseless the allegations of Parmar committing suicide because of Rs 150 crore Income Tax liability.

Earlier, a Thane sessions court had refused to grant anticipatory bail to the corporators. Being aggrieved, they moved the High Court.

Prosecution opposes Salman’s plea for examining Kamaal Khan

The prosecution in the 2002 hit-and-run case today opposed in the Bombay High Court Salman Khan’s application that his singer-friend Kamaal Khan, who was in the actor’s car at the time of the accident, should be examined.

Government pleader S S Shinde filed a written reply opposing Salman’s application. Justice A R Joshi would hear both the sides on the issue tomorrow.

The prosecution’s story is that Salman, Kamaal Khan and police constable Ravindra Patil (Salman’s bodyguard) were in the car on the night of September 28, 2002.

Salman’s lawyer Amit Desai, however, claimed that Salman’s family drivers also accompanied them. Altaf was in the vehicle from Galaxy Apartments (Salman’s residence) to the JW Marriott Hotel. At the hotel, another driver, Ashok Singh, took over and Singh was driving when the car had rammed into a bakery, killing one person and injuring four.

“It is not that we have not tried to get in touch with Kamaal Khan and examine him as a prosecution witness, but we could not find him….Besides, the defence could also have examined him as a defence witness if they wanted to,” Shinde told reporters.

The court’s ruling on whether Kamaal Khan should be examined at this stage would be important in deciding the course of the appeal, Shinde said.

Desai had argued that Kamaal Khan was with Salman for the entire evening and he can throw light on the incident better than anyone else but the prosecution never examined him.

But Shinde had said during the arguements that after obtaining Mumbai court’s permission to leave the country, Kamaal, a UK national, “vanished”. When the trial started before the sessions court, the prosecution could not find his whereabouts.

HC seeks regular reports on illegal shrines from civic bodies

The Bombay High Court, hearing a public interest litigation on mushrooming of illegal temples and shrines in Maharashtra, directed all municipal corporations to file status reports every month on the issue.

The state government informed the court that there is a government resolution (GR) which prescribes action against such shrines through “regularisation, relocation or removal”.

The division bench, headed by Justice Abhay Oka, had earlier demanded a time-bound programme of demolition.

Today, it directed all the municipal corporations to file status reports on 15th of every month, giving details of steps taken against illegal shrines.

The government had issued the GR following an order passed by the Supreme Court in 2009 directing all state governments to take action against illegal shrines.

Earlier, the court had been told that as of February 1, 2015, there were 6,336 unauthorised structures in the areas under seven municipal corporations including the Mumbai civic body. Of this, 207 were regularised, 179 demolished and three relocated.

The HC had, last month, asked the government to remove, within nine months, all the illegal religious structures constructed after September 29, 2009 (after the SC order).

HC asks MCGM to determine space needed to build night shelters

The Bombay High Court asked the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) to ascertain how much space it requires to build night shelters which can be used by homeless people in the city.

A division bench of justices A S Oka and G S Patel asked the civic body to also identify areas in the city where the number of homeless people are more.

The corporation will have to inform the court about this next week, after which the state government will be asked to allot land to the corporation.

The High Court was earlier informed that the state government had rejected seven proposals forwarded by the civic body seeking allotment of land. The court was told that the corporation’s proposal was rejected as the land proposed to be allotted was very small in area.

The directions were passed during the hearing of a Public Interest Litigation filed by NGO ‘Homeless Collective’, highlighting the plight of pavement dwellers.

The petition has sought directions to the civic and state authorities to identify homeless persons and ensure adequate night shelters for them.

The petitioner said that for every one lakh population in a city, there should be one night shelter, as per the National Urban Livelihood Mission (NULM).

According to that norm, Mumbai should have 207 shelters. However, only nine night shelters are operating at the moment as against the 25 that were promised in 2012, the PIL said.

Social media enabling radicalisation: US Ambassador

Social media platforms are enabling radicalisation, US Ambassador to India Richard Verma said.

“Social media platforms are enabling radicalisation, recruitment, and networking among like-minded individuals from afar,” Verma said during his address at the Megacity Security Conference here.

“The return of foreign fighters from places like Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria also casts ominous shadows. More so than ever before, small groups and individuals have access to lethal and even military-grade technologies that give them the ability to attack a city’s functioning.

“India has been a model of inclusiveness,” Verma told reporters when asked why have so few Indian Muslims joined the IS.

To a query on his assessment of threat perception of the dreaded terror group to India, Verma said it is for Indian officials to address that question.

“But as President (Barack) Obama said, this is a serious threat and we intend to intensify our strategies and it will require diligent efforts from all levels,” Verma said.

For countering terrorism in mega-cities, governments must create an ecosystem of cohesion and inclusivity, the US Ambassador said.

“We have to get to the root causes of unrest. As cities grow bigger here is a potential that certain sections of population become disaffected and frustrated. So there is an importance of good governance,” he said.

The US Ambassador also spoke of India-US cooperation on terrorism front including “shutting of the terror outfits finances and networks”.

Communications and transportation networks essential to the daily livelihood in cities also can serve as enablers that allow groups to recruit and maintain networks with relative anonymity. Even smart cities, which offer the promise of a greener and more sustainable future, can be vulnerable to cyber attacks”, he said.
