Indians now want to travel abroad to celebrate Diwali: Survey

In a departure from convention wherein Diwali is typically celebrated with family and friends, many Indians now want to travel to international destinations to enjoy the ‘festival of lights’, according to a survey.

“It is good to see the shift that Indians are expanding their horizons and now looking to celebrate this once perceived family-oriented festival overseas,” according to leading online accommodation booking website Hotels.Com.

As per their data, Europe remains the most searched outbound destination for Indians during Diwali while Goa continues to rule the domestic front.

The festival, which signifies the victory of good over evil, also marks the start of the holiday season for the Indian community.

During the festival, most foreigners visit India to experience its traditional fervour, which enriches their visit besides providing an impetus to the tourism industry.

“India receives a large number of international visitors who wish to savour the Indian festivities and culture during this festive season,” the study stated.

This is also the travelling intention of Indians during one of the most important festivals of the year.

One pilot’s body, wreckage of Pawan Hans chopper located

The wreckage of the Pawan Hans helicopter that crashed into the Arabian Sea off Mumbai coast last week, was located and the body of one of the pilots recovered on Monday evening, the Coast Guard said.

“Wreckage of the ditched Pawan Hans helicopter located in a joint operation by Coast Guard and MRCC Mumbai, body of one pilot recovered,” reported ANI quoting a statement from the helicopter company.

The statement also said that recovery of other parts of ditched chopper was in progress.

A Pawan Hans helicopter, with two pilots on board, had crashed into the Arabian Sea off Mumbai Coast last Wednesday evening. The pilot and the co-pilot were identified as Captain E Samuel and T K Guha.

The 14-seater VTPWF Dauphin aircraft of 2001-make took off from the ONGC installation at 7:12 pm and contact with it was lost eight minutes later.

The crash occurred during night landing practice.

A search operation was launched by the Navy and Coast Guard to locate the helicopter and its occupants.

But the search team had little success as poor visibility hampered the search and rescue operations though some debris was recovered the next day.

“We are yet to locate two pilots on board the ill-fated copter, but we have recovered its door and some debris,” a defence spokesperson had said on Thursday.

Why celebrities for Chhath Puja? HC asks Bihari Front

The Bombay High Court asked city-based Bihari Front as to why it wants to invite celebrities for taking part in rituals during Chhath Puja.

Justice V L Achliya was hearing a petition filed by ‘Bihari Front’, of which former MP Sanjay Nirupam is also a member, challenging an order passed by the Collector of Mumbai suburban on November 5 prohibiting it from inviting celebrities during the Chhath festival, scheduled to be held on November 17 and 18 at Juhu beach.

The Collector allowed the organisation to hold the puja and erect a platform on the beach for performance of rituals but did not allow it to put up a temporary fence to create a dry zone and invite celebrities.

“Why do you (Bihari Front) want to call celebrities for such festivals?” Justice Achliya asked.

Advocate Anirudh Garge, appearing for the organisation, told the court that they are only inviting former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, who wants to celebrate the festival, and that she is not a celebrity.

“We have been celebrating the festival for the last 18 years at Juhu beach and till date there has not been any complaint of violation of the rules and conditions imposed on us,” he said.

The petition further claimed that it is the discretion of the organisation whether or not to invite celebrities and the authority concerned cannot dictate terms after granting permission.

The court today posted the petition for hearing on November 16 before a regular bench of the high court.

Last month, the HC had refused to grant permission to cultural organisation ‘Mann Ranglo’ to hold Chhath Puja after observing that an end needs to be put to celebration of festivals with songs and dances, instead of rituals.

Mann Ranglo approached the HC after the Collector refused it permission on the ground that it had violated noise pollution rules and other conditions laid down when permission was granted previously.

Uma Bharti blames Shatrughan; conspiracies against Modi government for BJP’s lose in Bihar

Uma-BhartiStung by the Bihar poll verdict debacle, Union Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti on Monday alleged that a conspiracy was hatched against the Modi government surrounding growing intolerance and the beef row which damaged the party’s chances in the state.

Bharti said, “India is progressing rapidly under Modiji, that is why conspiracy was hatched.”

She further said that the conspirators chose the Bihar Assembly Elections time to raise some controversial issues like intolerance, beef eating and reservation to defame the Narendra Modi – led NDA government.

“The awards were returned as per a pre-planned conspiracy, the issue of beef was hyped during the Bihar Assembly polls. After that, the issue of intolerance was spread around and a few BJP leaders made some comments,” said Bharti.

On ‘intolerance’ charge in Bihar, Bharti said: “Saazish bohat badii thi hamaari sarkaar kay khilaf. Ye sab packaged saazish thii.”

Bharti was also critical of actor-politician Shatrughan Sinha, who has been firing fresh volleys at the BJP leadership for the party’s lacklustre performance in Bihar.

“Shatrughan Sinha became a part of the anti-BJP packaging. The party will take necessary action. Veteran leaders are present in the party to take necessary action,” said Bharti.

“I don’t need to say anything about this. If anyone has become a part of that packaging then necessary action would obviously be taken,” she added.

Meanwhile, a meeting of the BJP parliamentary board is presently underway at the party headquarters here where senior leaders are pondering over their loss in Bihar.

Earlier in the day, disgruntled BJP MP Shatrughan Sinha met Janata Dal (United) chief Nitish Kumar to congratulate him on his impressive win in Bihar and said those responsible for the party’s humiliating defeat “should be taught a lesson”.

The BJP, which was riding high on Prime Minister Modi’s growing popularity to establish its foot in a state ruled by its betenoire Nitish Kumar, had to witness an embarrassing movement as the people of Bihar refused to accept the NDA in their DNA.

RJD supporter celebrating Bihar poll victory beaten to death

Following the Mahagthbandhan’s victory in the Bihar Assembly Elections on Sunday, a Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supporter, who was celebrating the win, was beaten to death in Navada village near Arrah, Bihar by unknown men.

The young man, who belonged to a Yadav family, was celebrating the victory of the RJD with his friends by bursting fire-crackers, when some youth from the village protested against the celebrations by brutally assaulting them and almost beating them to death.

All the three injured men were rushed to the nearest hospital, however, one of them succumbed to his injuries which sparked an outrage in the village and the houses of the accused were attacked by the deceased youth’s supporters.

The police are investigating into the matter and the situation in Navada village remains tense.

None can stop BSP from coming to power in UP in 2017: Mayawati

Claiming that people in Bihar voted en masse in favour of the grand alliance against the “wrong policies and communal mindset” of BJP, BSP supremo Mayawati said results had proved that no power can stop her party from coming to power in Uttar Pradesh in 2017.

“The people of Bihar voted en masse in favour of Nitish Kumar and Lalu Prasad Yadav against the wrong policies, working style and communal mindset of BJP because of which BSP failed to ensure victory of its candidates,” Mayawati said in a statement.

“It became a direct fight in Bihar between the grand alliance and BJP…And BSP had to face massive losses there,” she said.

Mayawati, however, said that BSP had the satisfaction in the fact that anti-Dalit, anti-minorities and those against communal amity having casteist mentality have not been able to come to power in Bihar like at the Centre.

“People of Bihar need to be congratulated for this or else its effect would surely have been on the coming assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh,” she said, adding BJP was under the impression that once it comes to power in Bihar the same would be repeated in UP also.

“Bihar results have had an adverse impact on BJP and Samajwadi Party in UP, and BSP now has confidence that no power can stop it from coming to power in UP,” she stressed.

“In the recent panchayat elections in UP, BJP was wiped out and Samajwadi Party also trailed BSP…In Bihar, SP in a tacit understanding with BJP, fielded candidates which could have directly benefited the saffron party,” she alleged.

BJP’s poll debacle in Bihar a tribute to my father: Akhlaq’s son

The son of the man, who was lynched in Dadri in Uttar Pradesh over rumours of eating and storing beef, says the defeat of the BJP in the bitterly fought Bihar Assembly Elections is a tribute to his father.

The September 28 killing of Mohammad Akhlaq somehow played a crucial role in the outcome of the Bihar polls.

Commenting on the verdict, Sartaj, a corporal in Indian Air Force and the hapless son of Mohammed Akhlaq, said that people had united against the forces of communalism. “There’s no space for hate politics in our country. Result is a tribute to my father, and against hate and communalism. People should realise there is no gain in fighting in the name of religion. I appeal to all politicians not to divide the country for the sake of power,” he was quoted as saying by The Times of India.

The Grand Alliance of the Janata Dal-United (JD-U), the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Congress won a whopping 178 of the 243 seats, leaving the BJP — which wanted to oust Nitish Kumar — and its allies with just 58 seats in Bihar Assembly Election.

The RJD and JD-U ended up winning 80 and 71 seats each and the Congress 27. The BJP was the winner in 53 constituencies, and three allies — the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), the Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) and the Rashtriya Lok Samata Party (RLSP) — could together bag only five seats (2, 1, 2 respectively).

When asked how the Grand Alliance overcame the BJP, JD-U leader Nawal Sharma said: “Nitish’s glittering face and Lalu’s strong base got us the numbers. All the polarising (bids) of BJP – Dadri, Pakistan, cow, beef – have hit them hard.”

Bihar mandate: PM working as Sangh ‘pracharak’: Lalu Prasad Yadav

In a stinging attack on the Centre, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadavon Monday said that the people’s massive mandate to Mahagathbandhan or the Grand Alliance in Bihar is a big slap on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s face.

Addressing a press conference here, the RJD chief said, “Bihar mandate is a big slap on the Narendra Modi government. PM Modi wanted to fool people of Bihar but they understood his nefarious designs.”

Continuing his attack on the Prime Minister, the RJD supremo ridiculed him for calling him ”chara chor” and spoiling his reputation by raising the bogey of ”Jungle Raj” during the assembly election campaign.

PM Modi is trying to disintegrate the nation, we have to save the nation, Yadav said while appealing to the people of Bihar.

People in Bihar, especially minorities and the poor, have clearly voted against BJP, he added.

Coming down heavily on PM Modi, the veteran Bihar leader said that his Grand Alliance will continue to fight against the fascist regime at the Centre.

Narendra Modi is not working as the PM but as a Sangh pracharak, Yadav said in a direct attack on the BJP’s ideological mentor RSS.

The maverick leader also warned that he will travel to Varanasi and other states to mobilise support to fight against a ‘communal’ BJP.

He also assured that Bihar under the leadership of Nitish Kumar will herald in a new era of development.

The RJD chief’s fresh attack on the Centre came a day after the Mahagathbandhan trounced the BJP to win the bitterly fought Bihar assembly polls, delivering a major blow to Prime Minister Narendra Modi who led his party’s challenge.

In contrast to what most exit polls had said, the Grand Alliance of the Janata Dal-United (JD-U), the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Congress won a whopping 178 of the 243 seats, leaving the BJP — which wanted to oust Nitish Kumar — and its allies with just 58 seats.
