Jaitley’s remarks are “perverse and cynical” dubs Congress

JetlyCongress dismissed as “perverse and cynical” Finance Minister Arun Jaitley’s remarks trashing the steady stream of writers returning Sahitya Academy awards as a “manufactured paper rebellion”.

The party alleged that it showed that the Narendra Modi dispensation was “insincere, insensitive and unconcerned” to what is happening in the country.

Congress leader Anand Sharma, however, steered clear of the observations on India in the U S State Department report on International Religious Freedom for the year 2014.

The India section of the report, which includes the UPA rule till May 26, says that in 2014, India witnessed religiously motivated killings, arrests, riots and coerced religious conversions and the police in some cases failed to respond effectively to communal violence.

“It is an issue concerning the nation so we will be able to judge it better than others (outsiders). We will not judge the government by what others are saying. We will judge the government on the basis of the situation on the ground,” he told reporters.

Sharma dubbed Jaitley’s remarks as “perverse and cynical” contending that there was a “plan to create division with the diabolical agenda of radical elements of the so called Hindutva forces to suppress dissent and intimidate those (who speak up)”.

He was also critical of the Prime Minister’s remarks on the issue. Sharma insisted that the Prime Minister needed to go beyond expressing regret over the communal incidents in the country.

“The credibility of the Prime Minister has taken a beating after his statement yesterday,” Sharma said.

Noting that communal conflicts are not a law and order issue, he said that “it is part of a larger agenda of suppression of voices”.

He said government’s response showed that it was “insincere, insensitive and unconcerned” to the happenings in the country in the wake of the Dadri lynching incident.

Govt should not wait till Jan 23 to declassify Netaji’s files: Congress

Government should declassify the secret files relating to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and not wait till January 23 next year, ahead of Assemly elections in West Bengal, to start the process, an unfazed Congress said.

The party said that Modi government was also raising an accusing finger against Atal Bihari Vajpayee if it is questioning the decision of previous governments not to declassify the files and alleged that the BJP was trying to appropriate the legacy of Congress leaders.

“Why is the government waiting till January 23, 2016 to make the documents public? Is it because of Bengal polls? They should do it today or tomorrow. Why to keep up the suspense?”, party’s senior spokesman Anand Sharma told reporters.

Throwing more than adequate hints that the exercise was being undertaken with an eye on Assembly polls, Sharma claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi “had cried” during the recent visit to the US “targeting voters in Bihar”.

“It is sad and unfortunate…But this is how his mind functions. The Prime Minister is a good event manager,” remarked Sharma when asked about the Prime Minister’s announcement that government will start unveiling the secret files related to Netaji from January 23 next year, raising hopes about solving the seven-decade-old mystery about his disappearance.

Declaring that “there is no need to strangle history”, Modi told Netaji’s family members during a meeting here yesterday that he would also urge foreign governments to declassify files on Bose available with them by writing to them and personally taking up with their leaders, beginning with Russia in December.

Sharma noted that there were years when Congress was not in power but still non-Congress governments including the one led by BJP patriarch Atal Bihari Vajpayee decided not to make the documents public.

He said any insinuation against previous governments on the issue also meant an attack on Vajpayee.

“If an accusing finger is raised against the Indian National Congress, then it is also pointed towards Vajpayee who has been one of the most respectable leaders of the BJP”.

Besides, he insisted, that the move is part of appropriating the legacy of the Congress stalwarts in the freedom struggle.

“The Prime Minister is trying to appropriate the legacy of our leaders. They have tried it with Sardar Patel…They had nothing to do with the freedom struggle”

Successive governments have refused to make public these documents, arguing that India’s relations with foreign countries would be jeopardised. Modi’s office too had stated till August this year that the files cannot be declassified as it will adversely affect relations with foreign countries.

The demands for declassification of secret files have been growing lately, especially after the Mamata Banerjee government in West Bengal recently declassified 64 files which were in its possession.

Aadhar card: SC allows use on voluntary basis

The Supreme Court extended voluntary use of Aadhaar card for schemes like MGNREGA, all types of pension schemes, PM’s Jan Dhan Yojana and EPF.

The apex court constitution bench headed by Chief Justice HL Dattu modified its earlier order saying that Aadhaar card scheme is purely voluntary and not mandatory till matter is decided by this court.

The apex court modified the order on a batch of applications by the central government and its various agencies seeking modification of August 11 order by which the use of Aadhaar card was limited for getting foodgrain and kerosene under PDS and for LPG.

On August 11, the apex court had said that Aadhaar card will remain optional for availing welfare schemes of the government and the authorities will not use it for the purposes other than PDS and LPG distribution system.

The Centre, RBI, SEBI, IRDA, TRAI, Pension Fund Regulatory Authority and states like Gujarat and Jharkhand had recently moved the court and pitched strongly for voluntary use of Aadhaar cards for providing benefits of various schemes, other than PDS and LPG, at the doorstep of the aged people and the weaker sections.

Writers returning awards amount to dishonouring the recognition: Tharoor

Taking a contrary stand on return of Sahitiya Akademi awards by eminent writers, former Union Minister Shashi Tharoor commented that although writers have every right to stand up for their freedom of expression, returning the awards amount to “dishonouring” the recognition.

“Personally, I regret the fact that a section of writers have returned the Akademi awards. Award is a recognition of intellectual, literary, creative or academic merits. It is not a political act,” he said.

“Sahitya Akademi is actually an independent institution, and the concerns we have are political ones. For writers, I think there is no need to confuse these two. One should oppose the present climate…One should stand up for freedom…But one should not dishonour the award,” he said.

An established writer and columnist, Tharoor said awards are “society’s tributes to the achievements of writers and neither the achievements nor the tributes can be rolled back.”

However, the Congress leader said he was very much glad that so many writers had stood up for their cause at a time when many others had preferred silence.

“Writers are justified in their concern because the atmosphere of intellectual freedom is essential to promote and permit creativity in writing. Freedom of expression is something which any writer has a moral obligation to pick up for,” the 59-year-old MP from the state capital said.

Stating that freedom of expression is not just an abstract right in the constitution, Tharoor noted it was “as important as the blood that flows in our vein or the ink that flows in the pen”.

If the Sahitya Akademi is a disappointment to these writers, the Akademi itself must be pressured to review its stand on these issues, the former diplomat felt.

“Many prominent Malayalam writers including M T Vasudevan Nair, Paul Zacharia and Sugathakumari have not returned their Akademi honours. I do not think that they are any less committed to freedom,” he said.

Seniors need a place for relaxation

Senior Citizens who have played a vital role in the upbringing of their children look forward to relaxation in their final years. They go out looking for fun and that include watching scenic beauty and that includes seeing the blue sky, the mountains in the backdrop, rivulets, bird watching and looking for an airy place to do his or her regular routine for doing work outs and a place to take shelter after the rigorous of morning or evening chores. Both parks and roadside food outlets serve the purpose. Any activity that encourages physical movement will help you build your body. However, before you embark on any new exercise regimen or physical activity, get your physician’s approval. Reading books at your local library or bookstore will teach you the basics and get you started. Try writing your thoughts and memories down in a journal. Reading is great emotional therapy. You might even discover a hidden talent for writing.  Join a book or writer’s club in your community. It does not have to be just for senior citizens.

Intergenerational discussion can be stimulating for everyone in the group.  Develop the art of writing letters to the newspapers about the current issues and air your views. The efforts taken by you may fetch a few thousand rupees as the best letter or the letter of the week and thus you will develop the art of writing.  Again, collect the newspapers where your clippings were published and develop a scrap book, so as to enable you to show posterity to see your work in the media as a freelance writer or as a special correspondent if you have special knowledge about typical subjects.

Ranbir, Deepika lock lips in ‘Tamasha’?

RanvirFormer lovers Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone will be seen one more time together in Imtiaz Ali’s ‘Tamasha’. The duo has been on great terms despite breaking off long time back.

The fact that the audience loves to see them together on-screen makes ‘Tamasha’ even more special. The trailer and rushes have set the pace for the movie, which has an interesting storyline. There is an intense lip-lock scene between the two in the movie.

Although, the professionals that these two are, if the script demands it they have never shied away from locking lips (they did it in ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ too). Now, it has been reported that the scene will be much intense than the one they have performed earlier.

Alia can play Geet from ‘Jab We Met’: Shahid Kapoor

ShahidActor Shahid Kapoor feels if there’s one actress in Bollywood who can play ex-girlfriend Kareena Kapoor’s famous character Geet from their romantic comedy “Jab We Met”, it is his “Shaandaar” co-star Alia Bhatt.

Kareena gave one of her career’s best performance in the extrovert, full of life Punjabi girl in the Imtiaz Ali-directed film.

In the trailer of upcoming Vikas Bahl movie, Alia’s character is shown as an outspoken, fun loving girl, sparking comparisons between her role and Geet.

“My character, Alia, is not at all like Geet. Alia is crazy, simple and sweet. She lives in her own imaginary world. There are no similarities.

“I don’t think anyone can try and play her. She is an iconic character, at least for me. And there are no similarities between ‘Jab We Met’ and ‘Shaandaar’ except Shahid,” Alia said while promoting “the movie here.

The actor, however, thinks otherwise. “But if anybody could play Geet in future or a character like her than it is you Alia because you are like her. Your energy matches to Geet.”

The 22-year-old actress said, “Thank you, that’s a huge compliment for me.” This is not the first time Alia’s on screen character has been compared to Kareena’s. Her debut role of a young style queen of her school had striking similarities to Kareena’s “Kabhie Khushi Kabhie Gham” character Pooja.

When asked if Alia prepared differently for her role in “Shaandaar” considering she plays an insomniac, the actress said, “I had to stay awake all night but at the same time look good and be focused and present there… My sister is an insomniac so I know how that person functions.

“But without taking away the difficulty from this, I will say Vikas treated it in a happy way. That’s how he works. The nights for Shahid and my character became our days. I am shown reading, eating at night and he drives away so that was nice.” “Shaandaar” hits theatre on October 22.

Shiv Sena attacks PM Modi after Dadri remark, says ‘we respect him for Godhra’

SanjayPrime Minister Narendra Modi’s description of Dadri lynching and opposition to Ghulam Ali’s concert in Mumbai as “unfortunate” today led ally Shiv Sena to rake up his past when he was Chief Minister during the 2002 Gujarat riots and Congress to allege he suffered from “selective amnesia.”

As the unease between Maharashtra’s ruling allies BJP and Shiv Sena grew, Sena MP Sanjay Raut made a controversial reference to the post-Godhra riots, saying Modi “is known and respected due to Godhra and Ahmedabad.”

“If the Prime Minister has made such a statement (on Ghulam Ali), it is unfortunate,” Raut said.

“The world knows Narendra Modi due to Godhra and Ahmedabad and we respect him for the same reason. If the same Narendra Modi has called the controversy surrounding Ghulam Ali and (former Pakistan minister) Khurshid Kasuri unfortunate, then it is indeed unfortunate for all of us,” he told reporters in Mumbai.

Raut, however, seconded Modi’s views on Dadri lynching and said the incident was “highly unfortunate and it should not have happened.”

Breaking his silence, Modi today described the Dadri incident and opposition to the concert by Pakistan singer Ghulam Ali from Shiv Sena as “undesirable and unfortunate” and that his government had nothing to do with them but accused the opposition of indulging in “pseudo secularism” and politics of polarisation.

Writers returning award to discredit PM, move politically motivated: Anupam Kher

AnupamBollywood actor Anupam Kher has hit out at writers who have returned their award alleging attack on freedom of speech and to protest alleged against communal attacks in the country.

“This is politically motivated, it’s not like violent incidents are happening in nation for the first time,” Kher said.

The noted actor, who is known to have string views on social issues, also felt that the motive behind writers returning award is to show Prime Minister Narendra Modi in poor light.

“I think this is mostly to discredit the PM. If they want to return why not return everything?” he said.

“Many say my wife is in BJP so I am critical about academics returning awards, I’m independent in my views,” he stressed.

On the opposition to Ghulam Ali, Kher said, “I have not been allowed to perform my play in Pakistan, I applied too many times and visa wasn’t granted…Which is fine, I can deal with it.”
