ED gets Sathe Corp case papers, Ajit Pawar’s role under lens

Maharashtra government has handed over documents pertaining to the alleged multi-crore scam in state-run Annabhau Sathe Development Corporation to Enforcement Directorate and questioned the role of NCP leader Ajit Pawar in this connection.

Minister of State for Social Justice Dilip Kamble said documents were handed over to the ED, which is examining the case, last Tuesday and that the government was “doubtful” over Pawar’s decision to allocate Rs. 300 crore to the Sathe Corporation three months before Assembly polls last year.

However, former Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar said there have been no discrepancies and that the “truth will be out for all to see” once the investigation is completed.

NCP leader Ramesh Kadam, former chairman of the Corporation, along with three other accused including his then personnel assistant, his sister and one of his office staff are in judicial custody in connection with the alleged scam.

The state government has handed over the probe in the scam to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

Kamble claimed that the scam runs into about Rs 1,000 crore, out of which Rs 500 crore belongs to Sathe Mahamandal (Corporation) and the remaining has been received as grants from the Centre.

“We have handed over the documents to ED as we have to find out the cash flow, transactions with various accounts, purchase of 40 luxury cars and the distribution of cash in Assembly constituencies where NCP had contested the polls last year,” the minister said.

“Kadam had used the funds to live a lavish life, distributed luxury cars to presidents of various organisations working for Matang community so that nobody would raise their voice against him,” he alleged.

Kadam “withdrew Rs 22 crore cash from a nationalised bank on a single day and the CID has got the evidence of the transaction,” Kamble claimed, adding that the agency was probing it.

VK Singh lauds Bohra community’s role in ‘Operation Rahat’

Hailing Dawoodi Bohra community’s role in the evacuation of Indians from Yemen during ‘Operation Rahat’, Minister of State for External Affairs General V K Singh today said these “silent workers” did a tremendous job but have not been adequately recognised for their work.

“For evacuating Indians, not only did we get great amount of help from Yemeni authorities who were willing to come to the airport while it was otherwise barren, we also had the Indian Bohra community which provided us volunteers and assisted us in gathering people to come to us,” Singh said.

“These silent workers did a tremendous job and I think nobody seems to have recognised the type of role this little community played out there in ensuring that people could come to the airport, could be ferried to the airport. Word would be passed around to them that aircraft will start landing at so and so time so we want you to come early,” he said.

“They were also ensuring that immigration authorities worked there and assisted us,” the former Army Chief said.

He was speaking at an event in Bombay Stock Exchange where he was felicitated for the success of ‘Operation Rahat’ conducted by the government in April this year.

Describing the challenges that Indian authorities faced while evacuating Indians from the war-torn country, Singh said some people were reluctant to return to India and had to be coaxed to come back.

“Our people who were working there were very happy, except that when the situation went bad they thought it is better that we get evacuated. Otherwise there were a lot of people, for example a bunch of nurses I spoke to said that they are not happy going back. So it was a shock…You are trying to evacuate somebody back home and they are saying I am not happy to go back home,” he said.

“When I asked them why, they said we have a very good job here and we are only going back because our parents are crying at home and asking us to come. They wanted to stay back and I am quite sure by now, they must be already back in Yemen,” he said.

CM asked to provide security to ex-Pak minister in Mumbai

Organisers of an event featuring former Pakistani Foreign Minister Khurshid Mahmud Kasuri, have approached Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, seeking ‘adequate security’ to him after cancellation of Pakistani Ghazal maestro Ghulam Ali’s concert.

The Observer Research Foundation Mumbai, along with Nehru Centre and Penguin Books India, is organising a function to launch the book ‘Neither a Hawk nor a Dove: An Insider’s Account of Pakistan’s Foreign Policy’ by Kasuri, in Mumbai on October 12 at the Hall of Culture, Nehru Centre, Worli.

“Our purpose in organising this function is to make our own humble contribution to the much-needed normalisation of relations between India and Pakistan. Kasuri’s widely appreciated book shows his strong commitment to peaceful and cooperative ties between our two countries,” ORF Chairman Sudheendra Kulkarni said.

“The launch of the book will be accompanied by a panel discussion, in which the speakers are: A G Noorani, eminent jurist, historian and author; Naseeruddin Shah, renowned film and theatre personality; and Dileep Padgaonkar, eminent journalist and columnist,” Kulkarni, who will moderate the talk, said.

During his stay in Mumbai between October 11 and 14, Kasuri, besides attending the book launch function, will also visit Mani Bhavan and Jinnah House if possible, he said.

Kasuri will also meet veteran movie star Dilip Kumar at his residence.

In a letter to Fadnavis, Kulkarni asked the state government to provide adequate and fool-proof security to Kasuri during his stay here.

Security for Kasuri has become all the more necessary in view of the condemnable episode a few days ago when a concert in Mumbai by Ghulam Ali, the famous ghazal maestro from Pakistan, was called off because of the Shiv Sena’s threat to the organisers of the event, he said.

RJD files case with EC against PM Modi for calling Lalu ‘shaitan’

LaluRJD on Friday moved the Election Commission against Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his ‘shaitan’ remarks, accusing him of using “disparaging and insulting” language against party chief Lalu Prasad and Yadav caste and urged the poll panel not to allow him address further rallies.

The RJD complaint was submitted to Chief Electoral Officer of the state Ajay Nayak by party national spokesman Manoj Jha and his state counterpart Chitranjan Gagan who drew the poll panel’s attention to Modi’s remark that “Hamara mukabala Shaitan se (now our political contest is with devil)”.

The complaint dated October 9 is addressed to The Chief Election Commissioner of India through Chief Electoral Officer, Bihar.

It alleged that PM used “disparaging and insulting” remarks against RJD chief in his several political rallies in Bihar yesterday by “deliberately fabricating rumour and baseless” allegation against him.

Besides, he also went on not only to brazenly appeal to a particular caste but used provocative language for Yadavanshis/Yadavs violating the Model Code of Conduct, it said.

“These inflammatory and insulting speeches made by the PM also blatantly violates Article 153 of the IPC which amounts to promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language etc and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony,” the complaint alleged.

It drew attention of the EC towards newspapers coverage of PM speech.

The RJD complaint said this disturbed the political atmosphere and the idea of free elections that these kind of insinuating remarks were coming from no less than the PM.

“We urge you to have an informed look on the seriousness of the matter raised by us and take strong action by not allowing him (PM) to address further rallies so that the true spirit of fair elections is upheld and peace is not threatened,” it said.

After addressing four rallies yesterday, the prime minister will address elections meetings at Sasaram and Aurangabad.

Launching his campaign for Bihar poll from Munger on Thursday, the PM had said Lalu Prasad cannot absolve himself of his beef remarks by claiming that it was the “devil” (shaitan) on his tongue which made him say it, and added “I want to know how the shaitan got the address (of Lalu)…He recognises that it was the shaitan in a similar manner as people recognise their relatives.”

He made similar reference in subsequent rallies at Begusarai, Samastipur and Nawada.

Rape by 2 men is not a gangrape, says Karnataka HM K J George, NCW issues notice, apologizes later;

Karnataka Home Minister K J George has stoked a controversy with remarks suggesting that two men raping a woman cannot be termed as gangrape, drawing severe flak from parties and activists while the National Commission for Women issued a notice to him seeking an explanation.

However, the minister later apologised for his callous remarks. “I was quoted out of context. Rape or gang rape, it is condemnable. The question was German chancellor was here in India, does this incident affect the image of India. I told, no, public think like that, only a group of people is gangrape. Our police has done a good job, we have made the arrests and booked them under gang rape laws even before this controversy. We will ensure a speedy trial and make sure the guilty are punished”, the minister said.

He made the controversial statement when the media asked him about the rape of a BPO employee earlier this week. The 22 year old girl was gang raped by the driver & helper of the tempo traveller. The incident took place last Saturday in South East Bengaluru when the girl was returning from work around 10 pm. George is not the first law maker to make an insensitive comment about crimes against women. In August, Mulayam Singh Yadav had claimed its not possible for 4 men to rape a woman.

Former Karnataka CM Jagdish Shettar hit out at the minister. He said, “The Home Minister’s statement is utterly irresponsible. He is incapable to be the HM. The government has failed to protect the women and other people of the state. There is no fear among the people because of this administration.”

Love for Muslim boy made ex-Army officer’s daughter ‘like’ Islamic State!

The daughter of a retired Army Lt Colonel, about whom her father had alerted the National Investigation Agency over suspicion that she was planning to join the Islamic State terror group, had pretended to be radicalised in order to spite her parents, a report has claimed.

The 25-year-old Hindu woman was in a relationship with a Muslim man and decided to spite her parents after they rejected her demand to marry her Muslim boyfriend.

She started visiting websites containing material on the Islamic State despite not having any interest in its ideology.

The lady told Intelligence Bureau (IB) officials that she was angry at her parents and started looking for information on IS activities and reading up on Islam on the Internet.

According to the daily, the woman further told IB sleuths that it was her boyfriend who had instigated her to read material on IS on the Internet. In fact, he had even shared stuff on the terror group with her.

IB officers “suspect that the boy might be in touch with people either associated with Islamic State or other outfits”, the daily reported.

The father had come to know about his daughter’s interest in joining IS nearly three months ago while scanning through her laptop.

“Nothing suspicious was found against the girl though and she has been de-radicalized. She was not in touch with any ISIS member online. It was out of anger she did what she did,” an IB officer told the daily.

Indian intelligence agencies are now in touch with Australian authorities to seek more information about the woman’s Mumbai-based boyfriend – the duo had fallen in love while in Australia for higher studies.
