Voting in Kolhapur, Kalyan-Dombivali civic bodies on Nov 1

Elections to civic corporations of Kolhapur and Kalyan-Dombivali will be held on November 1, a poll battle in which the big four of Maharashtra politics – BJP, Shiv Sena, Congress and NCP – will be taking on each other.

Announcing the poll schedule at a press conference, State Election Commissioner J S Saharia said voting will take place from 7.30 am to 5 pm on November 1, while counting will be held the next day.

Nominations are to be filed from October 6 to 13 and their scrutiny will take place on October 14. The last date for withdrawal of candidature is October 16, he said.

In addition to the two urban civic bodies, Saharia also announced a three-phase schedule for elections to three newly carved out Nagar Parishads, 68 Nagar Panchayats and 2,352 Gram Panchayats in different parts of the state.

Polling will be held on October 28, November 1 and 6, and counting of votes will take place on November 7, he said.

Kalyan-Dombivali Municipal Corporation (KDMC), located in adjoining Thane district, has 122 seats, of which 61 are reserved for women.

Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC), in south-west Maharashtra, has 81 seats, of which 41 are reserved for women.

Sena-BJP combine currently rules KDMC, while Congress- NCP alliance is in power in Kolhapur. However, this time, NCP, Congress, Sena and BJP will contest separately in both the civic bodies.

Results of KMC and KDMC polls are likely to have an impact on the political permutations and combinations for the municipal corporation polls slated in early 2017 in Mumbai and other important cities like Thane, Pune, Nashik and Nagpur.

Political observers said the results would have a bearing on the seat-sharing talks for the 2017 civic polls.

BJP, which has remained a junior partner of Shiv Sena in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for years, is eyeing a large share of votes on the back of its good showing in Lok Sabha and Assembly polls in Maharashtra last year.

Girl thrashed by lady cops at Lalbaugcha Raja pandal; CM says guilty ‘won’t be spared’

A girl was beaten up by some women constables at the famous Lalbaugcha Raja Ganesh pandal here in an incident whose video went viral on social media prompting Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to say that the guilty will not be spared.

“This is a serious matter. The guilty won’t be spared,” Fadnavis told after a video of the assault went viral on social media.

“We have called for a report from the police within 48 hours. In these 48 hours, we will also ensure that action is taken if anybody is found to be guilty. This is a very serious incident and we will ensure that no person who is guilty of manhandling is spared,” Fadnavis said.

The reason for roughing up the girl, believed to be in her early 20s, is yet to be ascertained, but preliminary investigations reveal that the victim had come for the darshan of ‘Lalbaugcha Raja’ two days back and was trying to gatecrash from the VIP entry, when she was caught and assaulted.

A police officer said, “The footages which have gone viral show only one side of the story what happened inside the gate. But, in her attempt to get inside, the girl misbehaved with those cops. She had been threatening them that she is a black belt in karate and had been abusing the three women constables constantly. So, the three women cops got angry and took her to the police station.”

The victim was brought to the Kalachowkie police station at 2 am on Saturday morning and charged Rs. 1200 under section 110 (punishment of abatement if person abetted does act with different intention from that of abettor) of the Indian Penal code.

Police may call the victim and the constables to record their statements and check the CCTV footages of the spot, which were attached at the pandal.

The incident comes a day after it was reported that a lady scribe was assaulted by Lalbaugcha Raja workers.

Coal scam: No evidence against ex-PM Manmohan Singh, CBI tells court

Manmohan-SinghCBI on Monday opposed in a special court the plea of ex-Jharkhand Chief Minister Madhu Koda seeking summoning of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and two others as additional accused in a coal scam case, saying the application was “devoid of any merits”.

Special Public Prosecutor R S Cheema told the court that the records of the case not even prima facie suggest that the then PM, who was also Coal Minister at that time, was part of any conspiracy in allocating coal block to Jindal Group firms.

“The present application is a device worked out by accused person so as to not only delay the present trial but also deviate the court from the case,” Cheema told Special CBI Judge Bharat Parashar.

He said that a comprehensive and complete probe has been conducted by CBI in the case and they do not find any reason which would lead to summoning of the then PM as accused in the case.
“The records not even prima facie show anything to summon the then Prime Minister as accused in the case. The evidence does not show any complicity on the part of the then Prime Minister in allocation of coal block,” Cheema said.

Regarding the two other persons, whom Koda had sought to summon as additional accused in the case, the agency said that these two persons are important prosecution witnesses and there was no evidence to show that they conspired with anyone in the entire process.

The court, after hearing the submissions, reserved its order on Koda’s plea for October 16.
The case pertains to alleged irregularities in allocation of Amarkonda Murgadangal coal block to Jindal group firms — Jindal Steel and Power Ltd (JSPL) and Gagan Sponge Iron Pvt Ltd (GSIPL).

Koda, who is one of the 15 accused in the case, had moved an application seeking to summon Manmohan Singh and two others — Anand Swaroop, then Secretary (Energy), and Jai Shankar Tiwari, then Secretary (Mines and Geology)– as additional accused in the case.

Earlier, former Minister of State for Coal Dasari Narayan Rao had supported Koda’s plea for summoning of Manmohan Singh while claiming that the office of the then Prime Minister had allocated a coal block to Jindal group after examining and re-examining the matter.

CBI had on September 4 told the court that all the 15 accused in a coal scam case, in which Koda sought summoning of Manmohan Singh as accused, should clarify whether they supported or opposed his plea.
Koda’s plea seeking to summon Singh as an additional accused had contended that Singh being the final authority to allocate coal blocks, cannot escape from the consequences of his decision.

In his plea, Koda had claimed, “The materials placed by CBI show that the said conspiracy, if any, cannot be complete without the involvement of the Coal Minister (Singh) who had the final say in the entire allotment.”

He had said the court was required to consider that the case of all other accused “stand on a better footing as compared to Dr Manmohan Singh” who had taken the “ultimate and final decision” to allot coal block to the two Jindal firms.

The tweet from his official Twitter handle @OfficeOfRG read: “Very interesting discussions on the global economy & the disruptive power of tech at the conference in Aspen.”

The Congress has been insisting that Rahul Gandhi has gone to the US to attend a conference ‘Weekend with Charlie Rose’ at Aspen Institute in Colorado where thought leaders from different walks of life like politics, finance, technology, media, medicine, sports etc gather to deliberate on multiple issues.

Patra’s colleague GVL Narasimha Rao said, “Weekend with Charlie Rose was held between June 25 and July 4. “Is Rahul Gandhi travelling back in time?”

Sonia’s ‘devotion’ has made Rahul the ‘spoilt child of Indian politics’: BJP

In a scathing counter attack on the Congress after it questioned Prime Minister’s tears for his mother, the BJP on Monday dubbed Sonia Gandhi as a doting mother who spoilt her son, Rahul Gandhi.

“Judging by the Congress’ reaction to the Prime Minister’s superb visit, which is still underway, it seems the Congress has become the voice of untruth, malice and utter frustration,” BJP spokesperson MJ Akbar said.

“It seems to have become a party trapped in an inept leadership which is unable to bear the site of India’s Prime Minister raising the prestige and prosperity of the nation,” he said.

“Their frustration is also evident in the huge positive response that Prime Minister has generated from the giants of intellect and innovation; from the leaders of the future who can see another leader of future in their midst,” Akbar said.

“It is perhaps both significant and revealing that the Congress chose to get personal in an extremely appalling manner.”

Attacking the first family of the Congress, Akbar said, “The Prime Minister is devoted to his mother, he touched her feet after the election victory. This is in quote contrast to the Congress where a mother has ruined the party and is trying to ruin the nation by her utter devotion to her completely inept son.”

“It is this doting behaviour which has made Rahul Gandhi into the spoilt child of Indian politics. Instated of hiding underground somehow in the US and posting highly nebulous pictures of some alleged conference it might have been a better idea if Shri Rahul Gandhi had come out and explained what he is doing, unless, off course, he is enjoying an undeserved holiday,” he said.

PM Narendra Modi attacks ‘damaad’ Robert Vadra over corruption

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Monday, took a dig at Congress president’s son-in-law Robert Vadra while stressing that the NDA has provided graft-free governance.

Addressing the Indian community at the packed SAP Centre in San Jose, California, Modi said, “In our country it doesn’t take much for allegations to come up against politicians… Someone made 50 crores, someone’s son made 250 crores, (someone’s) daughter made 500 crores, (someone’s) damaad (son-in-law) made 1000 crores…”

Switching on to a question answer mode, he asked the audience “Is the country not disappointed?” The people replied “yes”.

“Is there not anger against corruption,” he asked. “Yes,” people shouted.

Modi then asked, “I am standing before you. Tell me if there is any allegation against me.” “No,” people shouted.

He then told the crowd that he is giving every minute of his life in the service of the nation and he would live and die for the country.

While Modi’s reference to sons and daughters of politicians being corrupt is seen as a reference to culture of corruption in the country, the reference to son-in-law is seen as a barb at alleged land deals entered into by Vadra with the some state governments.
