A controversial draft National Encryption Policy was on Tuesday withdrawn by the Centre following a public outrage over its plans to snoop on every message sent through WhatsApp, SMS, e-mail or any such service.
Addressing a press conference in the national capital, Union I&B Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said, “An expert committee, after elaborate study, had recommended the need for an encryption policy on social media.”
However, I want to make it clear that the Draft Encryption Policy released yesterday is only a draft, and not the view of the Government, the Minister said.
In view of the concerns raised, I have written to the GoI, DEIT to withdraw the draft, and reword it appropriately, the I&B Minister told reporters further.
Prasad also admitted that there have been “some uncalled for misgivings”, which prompted him to ask the GoI to “withdraw the Draft Encryption Policy and examine it carefully.”
The I&B Minister, however, reaffirmed the Modi government’s commitment to promote social media and various other such platforms .
“Our government fully supports the freedom of social media. We are proud of the steps taken by our government led by PM Narendra Modi ji to promote it. Our government fully supports social media and we respect the right of expression and articulation,” he added.
The reaction from the I&B Minister came shortly after a controversy erupted over government’s plans to snoop on every message sent through WhatsApp, SMS, e-mail or any such service. The Department of Electronics and Information Technology also clarified that social media websites and applications will be exempted from the purview of the draft National Encryption Policy.
The mass-use encryption products, which are currently being used in web applications, social media sites, and social media applications such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter etc are being exempted from the purview of the draft National Encryption Policy, said a proposed addendum to the policy posted on the department’s website.
Aiming to fine-tune its war fighting strategies, India will hold a massive military exercise on its western front in Rajasthan in October-November.
Indian Army’s 21 Corps, one of the 3 strike corps, will be at the core of the exercise which will have armoured, artillery and infantry divisions taking part in it.
The exercise, reportedly, is primarily being held to practise swift, high-intensity attacks into enemy territory.
Importantly, Army chief General Dalbir Singh Suhag had recently stated that his force’s operational strategy had factored in the need to be ready for “swift, short nature of future wars” with “limited warning time”.
The report further added that over 30,000 troops, hundreds of T-90S and T-72 battle tanks, artillery guns, rocket systems – all supported by satellites and drones, and airborne radars – will take part in the exercise.
The newspaper quoted sources as saying that Pakistan has been informed about the impending military exercise, as is the protocol between the two countries.
People are visiting Ganesh pandals and seeking the blessing of Lord Ganesh. This year, thanks to the Bombay High Court intervention Ganesh Mandals have been following some discipline while erecting the pandal. The High Court had issued directive that pandals should not occupy more than 25 per cent of the road space. Citizens should refrain from bursting too many loud crackers during the festival. People should not go overboard with celebrations during the Ganesh festival. I was pleased to read reports about Police Commissioner Ahmed Javed who accepts only one rupee as salary
and donates rest to Police funds. He had already investigated Zaveri Bazar and Gateway of India blasts. He was commissioned in Delhi Police between 1983 and 1985. On the other hand, there are politicians and officers demanding more money indulging in corruption and failing to discharge their duties.
Delhi is plagued by Dengue and civic cleanliness and primary health care is woefully lacking. The local government and the central government is engaged in a game of one-upmanship. Time has come for Delhi administration should be handed over to the Army for a period of one year to inject discipline and order. The government only talks about cleanliness but could not sustain the Swachh Bharat campaign which was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year on the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday. If the programme has to succeed civic cleaning staff and volunteers should actively participate in it. The attendance of the municipal employees responsible for sanitation, should be ensured on the ground by a senior officer.
We are witnessing too many derailments in the Railways. This is because the government has failed to upgrade the rail infrastructure. Enthusiasm has to be kept sustained at the worker level and not merely at the senior level. The Railway ministers in the past have not ensured on the renewal and upkeep of tracks but they have only announced populist welfare schemes before the arrival of election.
Eid-festival is just round the corner and all of us must celebrate it with goodwill ensuring peace and harmony. I remember the essay “Idgah” written by Munshi Premchand, which we read in Hindi text books during our school days. It is narrated with great simplicity and sensitivity. Even Dussehra and Diwali festival too is approaching. Cost of food items is increasing due to rising inflation. Our nation has been witnessing deficient monsoon this year. Instead of constructing smart cities with Wi-fi connection the government must pay attention to sustainable and self sufficient rural economy to augment milk, vegetable, fruit and production of pulses (arhar, urad, chana daal etc;). Population is increasing day by day and steps must be taken to address this issue. The nation is witnessing severe drought due to deficient monsoon. The government must provide financial assistance to farmers who have been affected due to drought. It must also waive farm loans to revive the agricultural economy.

Sanatan Sanstha has not issued any death threat to Nikhil Wagle claims Abhay Vartak.
Abhay Vartak spokesperson of Sanatan Sanstha said that senior journalist Nikhil Wagle is trying to gain publicity by saying that he has received death threat from Sanatan. Vartak said that the allegations made by Wagle are baseless as all the information are provided through his sources. Vartak also clarified that Sanatan Sanstha has never targeted anyone and will not harm anybody.
“If Wagle is really serious about the threat then he should have accepted the security cover offered to him by the Maharashtra government. If Wagle is refusing to accept security then he is only trying to gain some mileage through this issue. We publish articles in Sanatan Prabhat if somebody misinterprets it then it is their problem. Sanatan has not issued any death threat to Wagle or anyone as such,” said Abhay Vartak.
Earlier there were reports about Nikhil Wagle receiving death threat from Sanatan Sanstha. Wagle had invited the ire of right wing outfits for expressing his views against them. Mumbai police officials recently met Nikhil and offered him security cover. Wagle has refused security as it will hamper his journalistic activities. Maharashtra police has found that Nikhil’s name was mentioned regularly in the telephonic conversation between arrested Samir Gaikwad and some other members of Sanatan Sanstha including absconder Rudra Patil.
“Last week, police officials came to me saying that government has decided to offer security cover in view of general threat perception. However, they did not specify whether it was because of the threat from Sanatan”, Nikhil Wagle said.
“I have been getting threats from Sanatan. Four years ago, Abhay Vartak of Sanatan (Sanstha) walked out of a programme I hosted. Even as recently as last week, Sanatan Prabhat (a publication of the outfit) carried an article warning me,” he said.
Leader of opposition in legislative assembly, Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil said, “The police must immediately take action against Sanatan Sanstha. Sanatan Sanstha had issued death threat to journalist Shyamsundar Sonnar through their publication Sanatan Prabhat. The outfit had also noted down the names of those police men who had taken action against the members of Sanatan Sanstha. This is serious issue and the government must ban Sanatan Sanstha.”
Mumbai Press Club took serious note of the threats issued by Sanatan Sanstha to Shaymsundar Sonnar, a senior journalist with a Marathi newspaper ‘Prahaar’. Sonnar has filed a formal police complaint and has urged the police to provide security to him and his family members.
Sanatan Prabhat published an article targeting Sonnar for his interpretation of Sant Tukaram’s pro-science preaching. Sonnar is a vaarkari preacher who is invited by people across Maharashtra for kirtans and public speeches. His rationalist views are very much appreciated and well accepted. The newspaper’s article which appeared on Sept 1, 2015, spat venom against the senior journalist and called him anti-Hindu.
Maharashtra has indulged too much in meat ban politics and courts too are engaged in the same controversy. A stay on beef ban is a decision that should be taken by the state government; the Bombay High Court has also refused to stay the ban temporarily. The court was hearing a petition by various groups to relax the ban on beef for three days during the Muslim festival of Bakri Eid, which involves the sacrifice of calves and bulls and is to be held over the weekend. In March, the Maharashtra government had banned the slaughter of bulls and calves in the state, where cow slaughter was already illegal. It made possession, transportation and consumption of beef a punishable offence. The ban became a political issue after farmers — who were finding it hard to sell their old bullocks — and beef traders started protesting against it. The issue was taken up by Republican Party of India (A) — an ally of the ruling BJP — which contended that the government was doing an injustice to the minority community and the farmers.
The Muslim Rashtriya Manch — a wing of the BJP’s ideological mentor Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh or RSS – also launched a signature campaign demanding rehabilitation of those affected by the beef ban, especially the Qureshi community. But the state government has made it clear that there would be no going back on the law, though it would take steps to rehabilitate people whose livelihood has been hit. Last week, the Supreme Court refused to uphold a temporary ban on meat sale in Mumbai imposed by the state government on the occasion of a Jain festival. The court had said that “a ban cannot be forced down someone’s throat” and a “spirit of tolerance” was of paramount importance.
There were debates on National television and there were outrage on social media, more farcical that the PM is silent on this and so many other issues which each time make his government seem intolerant and dictatorial. Any disagreement is culled and people will be charged with sedition, if they talk against the government or leaders. I see this as a danger for our democracy and unless large, collective voices are raised, we will soon be in a police state.
As a Mumbaikar if you ask me, the meat is easily available in malls, restaurants, food joints too. It’s a matter of three days, people can even buy the meet and store it in their fridge, if one has to adjust then there are ways.
VHP international president Ashok Singhal has demanded a nation-wide ban on cow slaughter. He emphasised upon protection of cows is necessary for the nation’s progress and said that by banning cow slaughter, India will become a “Hindu nation by 2020”. BJP government in Gujarat demolished temples in the name of development and the Rajasthan government too emulated them. Modi the so called Hindu icon had changed his tone and skin and going random appeasing Muslims, but some Hindu radical groups stuck to beef ban and nation’s progress.
Eating any meat is a subject of personal preference which comes under the fundamental right given by the Constitution of India. As per the Constitution, the beef slaughtering was written as a state subject; that is, every state can exercise its right to ban or allow cow slaughter. It should be reminded that this ban or no ban of cow slaughter is about cow slaughter for trade. What many people do not know that even in a banned state, one can kill a cow and eat its meat and share it with others without trading it for monetory gain. This is part of every citizen-of-India’s Fundamental Right guaranteed by the constitution, which cannot by banned by any legislative body like the parliament or assembly. To knock over the clause of ‘Cow slaughter for trade’ from state subject to national needs a 2/3rd majority in the parliament. Hindu scriptures belong or refer to the Vedic period which lasted till about 500 BC according to the chronological division by modern historians. In the historical Vedic religion of Hinduism, meat eating was not banned in principle, but was restricted by specific rules.
It’s interesting to note that Ayurveda provides an impressive list of fish and animals and speak of the therapeutic uses of beef. Somesvara shows clear preference for pork over other meats. Similarly, the authors of Dharmasastra commentaries and religious digests from the ninth century permit beef in specific circumstances. So, the first inference we can draw is that Muslims rulers or religion have nothing to do with beef consumption in India. Beef had been associated with Indian dietary practices much before the advent of Islam. Many scholars believe that a challenge to Brahminical order appeared with the emergence of Buddhism. It posed a threat to the Brahminical value system. The low castes were slipping away from the grip of Brahminism. The rebellion and the emergence of a new derivative religion pushed hard the concept of the protection of cattle wealth, which was needed for the agricultural economy.
Democracy is supposed to guarantee basic human rights to every individual. It is also supposed to show good Governance with focus on public interest. The livelihoods of millions are affected by this beef ban. The government has failed on both counts i.e. basic human rights to work has been taken away from beef traders and the ban can hardly be called good Governance because the interests of beef traders have not been taken into account. What are they supposed to do? Fold their tents and move to another state hoping that the beef won’t be banned there?
