Animal rights protesters crash Rihanna’s perfume launch

RihanaLos Angeles: Rihanna’s new perfume launch in Brooklyn, New York was briefly disrupted after anti-fur protesters crashed the event and verbally attacked the star for choosing to wear animal products.

Hundreds of fans crammed into MACy’s department store in Brooklyn to catch a glimpse of the “Diamonds” hitmaker as she unveiled her latest scent, RiRi by Rihanna, reported E!Online.

But a small group of people caused a scene by parading around the shop, holding up posters of cuddly animals featuring phrases like, “Who died for your coat?” and “Skinned alive”.

Video footage shows the demonstrators repeatedly chanting “Shame on Rihanna” as security guards swoop in to spare the singer an angry confrontation with the animal rights protesters.

Rihanna, 27, has previously come under fire for wearing lavish fur accessories, while she was attacked by officials at People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals in 2012 after she stepped out wearing thigh-high snake-skin boots.

Avoid wastage of water

Due to weak monsoon the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has announced 20 per cent water cut in the city. The stock of water available in the dams is insufficient to meet the metropolis needs for next year. Water levels in reservoirs are 28 per cent lower than the same period last year, and 25 per cent lower when compared to the average between 2005-2014. Rain Water harvesting is a new approach to solve the water shortage problem. The existence of water harvesting systems in India has a very long history. The use of artificial storage facilities within a rain water harvesting system requires exact calculation regarding their storage capacity depending on its intensive costs and other over heads.  It is indeed quite imperative to have a National Policy to make Rain Water Harvesting mandatory and proper planning is required to tap the resource from the grassroots level. In cities like Chennai, Rain Harvesting is made compulsory in all the Housing Societies and the builders are given permission to construct buildings only when there is provision for such an arrangement.

There are so many available sites in Mumbai and other parts of the satellite city unless we take proper steps to implement the project in right spirits.  The wastage of rain water is to be stored and preserved for future use. Not all the rain that falls can actually be collected. Efficiency is usually presumed to be more than 80 per cent depending on system design and capacity. Therefore, a 1200 square foot roof will collect 1100 gallons of water on a day with two inches of rainfall. Using this formula and region’s average rainfall numbers combined with an estimated water need, you should be able to calculate the approximate size of your tank or the so called Barrel System. This takes care of the requirement of a few. Harvesting rainwater in bulk quantities, which can cater to the needs of larger community, though out the year requires large space in location. Big Housing complexes can go for such a scheme to cater to the needs of huge population residing in prestigious complexes.

Instead of wasting space at focal points in the building complex, a large tank can be made from materials such as cement or metal is made available for storing water in large quantities. The height of this mammoth tank could be raised to a minimum of 20 feet, so as to allow for natural gravitational force and also allow the racing to happen undisturbed as continuous process. Stitch in time saves nine is really true.  If we store rain water during monsoon season, the same can be used during acute shortage for washing and in case surplus water is available, then that can be used for watering the gardens surroundings of big buildings. Rain water harvesting is the need of the hour. There is no doubt about it.

We are all very much concerned about water that is so essential for life. Water wastage is to be prevented at all levels. BMC should take proper care of the sources of supply and prevent water wastage. Water starved city is facing repeated bursting of pipelines and leakage of pipes in the recent months sending millions of litres of usable water down thereby causing inconvenience to people. The civic body needs to work on war footing to replace the old pipelines and plug the leakage at focal points to save water from going waste. People on their part should play a pivotal role and avoid wasting of water. Around 76 million litres of water is wasted due to leakages and thefts which is a huge loss and it is time to plug the holes and save water.

Sooraj Pancholi doesn’t want to let mentor Salman Khan down!

SoorajEmerging actor Sooraj Pancholi says there wasn’t any specific pressure on him and co-“Salman sir never put any pressure on us. He never instructed us to work in a specific manner, or to take inspiration from other guys. Obviously there is a pressure because we’ve got such a big film and he is backing us. We can’t let him down and that’s a pressure,” he said to a query about the enormous expectations from them at a media interaction on Tuesday as part of the film promotion.

Though Sooraj and Athiya are kids of Salman’s close friends, Aditya Pancholi and Sunil Shetty respectively, the fathers didn’t have a say in their launch. And it was Salman spotting potential in them, the reason why he decided to launch them.

Sooraj said: “I was working with Kabir Khan on ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ where I met Salman sir. And after shooting for 6-7 months in Turkey, the film was about to get completed. He came in my room at three on the night of my birthday and pulled me into his room and gave me a birthday gift which was ‘Hero’.”

Explaining how she got the role, Athiya said: “I used to go to the gym in Bandra where I came across Salman sir’s sister. And she told him about me and anyway they were looking for an actress opposite Sooraj. He spoke to papa (Sunil) and the next thing I know is I’m on the sets of ‘Hero’.”

‘Hero’, a remake of the 1983 film, is being produced by Salman Khan and Subhash Ghai and is directed by Nikhil Advani.

Mikhail was aware about Sheena’s murder?

Police are suspecting that he might have made them the anonymous call to inform about Sheena’s murder.

MikhailSheena Bora’s brother Mikhail knew that she was going to be murdered. According to sources Mikhail was blackmailing his mother Indrani Mukherjee for money but when she refused to pay him money he divulged all the facts three years after Sheena’a murder incident. Mikhail had forwarded Sheena’s resignation letter to Mumbai Metro One 13 days after her death. He also had sent a letter to Sheena’a landlord for cancelling the lease of her rental apartment. Mikhail kept in operation Sheena’s Linkedin profile till two weeks ago. Police are suspecting that he might have made them the anonymous call to inform about Sheena’s murder. They are probing this matter further.

The Mumbai Police will slap fresh charges of attempt to murder against Indrani Mukerjea, her second husband Sanjeev Khanna and the driver for allegedly trying to kill Mikhail. Officials in the investigating team, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that the Indrani and Khanna had called Mikhail to Mumbai in the last week of April in 2012 and kept him at a hotel at Worli.

They said that Mukerjea and Khanna had called him to Mumbai for settling some family issues and served him some soft drinks in a hotel which was laced with sleeping medicines. Leaving him at the hotel, Mukerjea, Khanna and driver Shyam Rai allegedly murdered Sheena on April 24, the officials said, adding that when the trio returned, Mikhail had fled. Mikhail said he had regained consciousness and fled the hotel and left Mumbai for Guwahati. Living up to his claims, he provided some evidences to the investigators, which Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria said were being verified.

Indrani Mukerjea ensured her daughter Sheena Bora and her son Mikhail did not communicate with each other on the day of the alleged murder.

After news of Sheena’s murder broke, Mikhail claimed Indrani had been paying him to keep quiet about his exact relationship with Indrani. Mikhail has shared the email exchanges he had with Sheena, in which she has told her about the issues she had with Indrani, said police sources.

The Mumbai Police has detained the contract killer, who was hired by Indrani Mukerjea to eliminate her son Mikhail Bora.

A high-ranking bureaucrat said that Indrani or her associate had paid Rs 2.5 lakh to a contract killer. “Our information is that the plan failed to take off. We have detained the contract killer. He has admitted that he was hired by Indrani to eliminate Mikhail,” he said.

Will PM Modi pay for ignoring farmer’s issue?

Rahul Gandhi will lead a ‘Save Farmer March’ in Bargarh district during his two-day visit to Odisha to highlight alleged failure of both the Centre and BJD regime in the state in mitigating the plight of peasants. If Modi Government has allowed to lapse the land acquisition act ordinance then media must give credit to Congress — particularly – Rahul Gandhi. He was the only political leader, who constantly mounted pressure and mobilised national anti-land acquisition sentiments. Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to embark upon a two-day visit to Odisha which he will lead a Chasi Banchao Padyatra in Bargarh district which is witnessing suicide by farmers. In view of drought like situation, mainly in western Odisha where farmers are committing suicide due to crop loss and debt burden, the ‘Save Farmer March’ is being held to emphasise the urgent need to save the distressed peasants. So far, no timely step has been taken to ensure that the farmers who are facing crop loss should be covered in the insurance. After the major defeat in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi has proved to be an aggressive opposition leader and he is very nicely handling the issues of farmers across the country.

BJP won the general election by the huge majority last year. One of the key election promises that brought it to power was transparency and responsibility in governance. People trusted Modi during his election campaigns. Till date, most of the electoral promises made on that front remain on paper.

When the ruling party is having absolute majority, it has to continue in power till completion of five years. Then where is the question of celebration on completion of 100 days or one year like cinema movies. On the contrary, they can celebrate it at the end of their term conveying to people that these were their achievements during their regime. Besides, nowadays people are aware about the steps taken by the government and they can differentiate between right and wrong. Hence, my request is to the PM that he should continue his work without spending time on such flimsy celebrations and plan what should be done next. That will automatically bring honour to the PM’s Team.

Modi has individually shown glimpses of what he can do and think; here the best examples to cites are ‘Clean India Movement’ and ‘Girl Child Develop-ment’. I hope more such exclusive initiatives will be implemented in near future which can transform the nation’s image. In a democracy like India, one needs to be humble enough to accept the sheer scale of expectations. Chest thumping, sloganeering can only take you to some extent but nothing beyond that. Instead of resorting to headlines, he and his team should work for equitable, comprehensive and no melodramatic governance.

Land acquisition is another issue. Farmers are committing suicide but BJP points out at UPA government’s failure in protecting the interest of farmers. UPA has been voted out by the people of this country hoping that Modi would do something good for them, but after one and half years of ruling, BJP government is yet to come out of election campaign mode. They still accuse UPA and divert the crucial issues. Farmers and crusaders are on the street against the Land Acquisition Bill. The government has failed to explain how this bill will benefit them. They should explain to people that how their health would improve if the government destroys the environment. They can’t justify cut in budgets of education, research and development. How it will spur inventions and innovations? Tell them that the current account deficit has come down due to fall in oil prices not because of the steps taken by the government. Tell them, there are plenty of travel and some immature statements by the PM.

PM and his team have made a good beginning by initiating measures for good governance and development. However, the general perception among the middle class is that the delivery system does not keep pace with the promises made by PM last year. There are few examples which support my statement like Clean Ganges plan, Returning of Black Money, Construction of Ram Mandir at Ayodhya and many more. Nothing could be seen happening here; rather BJP’s national president giving a statement to media saying Black Money was Election ‘Jumla’, a gimmick used for election campaign purpose.

Besides some flaws, Modi has made it clear that his ideas regarding devolution of center’s powers to local governments. He said decentralization brings government closer to people. He wants administrative and technical empowerment of the local institutions to fight poverty by participating in planning and management of local development. He has initiated the financial inclusion program that aims to help provide a bank account for every household in the country, insurance and accident policy for all. His foreign outreach was aimed at industrialists and CEOs to contribute to the ‘Make in India’ program of his government; he has made efforts to engage with neighbours. He wants social justice and development of the poor as a part of national commitment. However, this entire year look like lip services by Modi. He failed to bring down inflation, dollars are going up whereas rupee is weakening, petrol and diesel prices are shooting up. Unemployment issue is on the rise. Plight of farmer and Jawans are still the same. There has been a rise in rape cases.

Modi and BJP had shown dreams to people but they are yet to fulfill the expectations of the citizens of this country. On the contrary, attacks on churches, reconversion, hate against minority, irresponsible statements by BJP leaders added fuel to the fire. Delhi elections and Patel’s agitation already indicated that people have started disowning Modi slowly and Bihar elections furthermore will give us the confirmation.

Does the man who spent intimate time with Sheena in Thailand hold the key to murder mystery?

SheenaJust days after Indrani Mukerjea was arrested for the murder of her daughter Sheena Bora (claimed to be younger ‘sister’ at the time of arrest), it was reported that Sheena could have been pregnant when she was killed.

And now, in a new twist to the case, it is being claimed that Sheena was pregnant with the baby of a person ‘very, very close’ to Indrani, wife of former Star TV CEO Peter Mukerjea.

And this, say sources, could have been the prime motive behind the murder of Sheena Bora.

According to a report in The Quint, Mukerjeas’ close friends have hinted that Sheena could have got pregnant months before she was murdered.

And the ‘father’ of the baby, alleged to be ‘very, very close’ to Indrani, is reported to have spent considerable intimate time with Sheena in Thailand.

As per reports, the man had told Indrani before going to Thailand that he would be travelling to the Southeast Asian country to meet some prospective business partners.

However, when Indrani later found out that Sheena too had travelled to Thailand during the same time, she inferred that her daughter and the man were together. This was corroborated when Indrani had actually found the stub of the flight’s boarding passes in one of Sheena’s books.

Upon being confronted by Indrani, the man confessed about the relationship but added that he thought it was okay because of the wild parties they used to attend regularly. As per the report in The Quint, the man also said that he was under the impression that Sheena was Indrani’s sister and not daughter.

Sheena too is reported to have told Indrani that she was pregnant with the baby of the man “close” to her.

HC gives bail to Hasan Ali in tax evasion cases

Hasan-AliThe controversial Pune-based businessman Hasan Ali has been granted bail by the Bombay High Court in seven cases filed by the Income Tax Department for allegedly evading tax to the tune of Rs one lakh crore during 2001 to 2007.

Hearing Ali’s plea yesterday, Justice Abhay Thipsay granted him bail in the sum of Rs one lakh in each case.

Earlier, Ali, who has been in the custody for three years and eight months, was granted bail by the High Court in cases filed against him under Prevention of Money Laundering Act and Passport Act.

“As Hasan Ali has got bail in all the cases filed against him, he will soon be released from prison…It is a matter of a couple of days before he comes out from jail. We have to organise sureties and the money to complete the formalities. We are also awaiting copy of bail order,” said his lawyer Ranjeet Sangle.

Ali is at present lodged at Arthur Road jail here.

The Income Tax Department had filed seven separate cases in 2009 against Ali, alleging that he had not filed IT returns for assessment years 2001 to 2007.

Ali’s lawyers Abaad Ponda and Ranjeet Sangle argued he had filed IT returns for this period belatedly in 2007. They also pointed out that Ali was 64 years old and was in jail for over three years, so he should be released.

Not filing IT returns was a bailable offence, they said.

The department, however, opposed his bail plea saying that investigations were still on.

Ali was arrested under PMLA in 2011 on the charges of money laundering and stashing huge amounts of black money in foreign banks. He is also accused of obtaining five passports in different names.

Government mulling to allow people to keep 12 liquor bottles at home

EknathTaking serious note of deaths due to spurious liquor consumption, the Maharashtra government is planning to allow a permit holder to keep 12 bottles of alcohol at home against the existing two.

State Excise Minister Eknath Khadse said the government is likely to issue a notification next month to modify the existing law in this regard.

“More than a 100 people unnecessarily lost their lives in the Malwani hooch incident. After that incident, the state Excise department is trying various measures to curb the sale of spurious and illegal alcohol,” said Khadse.

“One of the steps the Excise department has suggested is to allow a permit holder to keep 12 bottles of liquor at home in place of the existing two,” he said.

The government will be not be required to amend the existing Bombay Prohibition Act, he said adding that the state Cabinet is empowered to bring necessary changes in the law.

The government is also likely to do away with the existing system where a person consuming alcohol has to take a day’s permit before consuming liquor, the minister said.

“When a person goes to a permit room that is legal, he has to spend on getting a day’s permit. One should not be asked to pay extra while sitting in a place that already has a permit to serve alcohol,” he said.

Khadse said the Excise department has also suggested to increase the minimum quantity of alcohol to be stored in each bottle from the existing 750 ml to 1,000 ml.

“The Excise department has suggested increasing the minimum quantity that can be stored in each bottle from 750 to 1,000 ml. But we are not keen on doing that at the moment,” he said.

Several companies have approached the government to draft new holograms to ensure authenticity of alcohol, he said adding that a committee will be set up to decide on the issue.

“A committee will be set up that will comprise of Excise Commissioner, Excise Secretary and Finance Secretary. They will make the necessary framework for companies to respond to our tenders. After that, a company will be finalised for making holograms,” Khadse said.
