I was unaware Sheena was Indrani’s daughter: Peter Mukherjea

Peter-MukherjeaetFormer STAR CEO Peter Mukherjea, whose wife Indrani Mukherjea was on Tuesday night arrested for the murder of her daughter Sheena Bora in 2012, has expressed shock over the developments.

It only emerged on Wednesday that Sheena was Indrani’s daughter; so far it was believed that Sheena was Indrani’s sister.

Mikhail Bora – Sheena’s brother – revealed that they were in fact Indrani’s children.

Even as police arrived at his residence to question him in the case, Peter told that he was unaware Mikhail and Sheena were Indrani’s children.

“Sheena and Mikhail were introduced to me as Indrani’s siblings by Indrani herself,” Peter said, adding he never doubted what Indrani told her.

Peter said that though he was in shock, he would cooperate with investigators in the probe.

“I have never experienced anything like this before. The news I am getting, the kind of crime that has been committed, I would have never expected,” he said.

“I don’t understand at all with regard to my wife. Sheena Bora is her sister, I believed all these years, and now I am being told that she was her daughter. Whom I thought was her brother, is now her son from an earlier marriage, which I was not aware of. I was aware of one marriage and not so many others. So, now there are number of things that are appearing to me which are completely new to me,” he said.

“I was also told that Sheena was sent to the US for further studies (when she disappeared). I was completely in dark (about the entire matter),” Peter said.

“I was not aware of anything, their conversation used to be in Assamese which I couldn’t understand,” he said.

Peter revealed that Sheena was having an affair with his younger son from a previous marriage.

“Indrani did not approve of their relationship,” Peter said.

Indrani Mukherjea was arrested by the Khar Police last night following questioning over her alleged role in the murder of Sheena Bora in 2012.

Maharashtra’s Raigad Police had found remains of Bora in a forest following which a murder case was registered against unidentified persons.

Indrani was produced before the Bandra Metropolitan Magistrate court, which remanded her in police custody till August 31.

Sheena Bora was strangled, body burnt with petrol: Maria

MariamariRevealing details regarding the sensational murder of Indrani Mukherjea’s daughter, Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria said on Wednesday that Sheena Bora’s was strangulated and her body was burnt with petrol.

Maria said, “Indrani Mukherjea’s daughter was strangled to death on 24 April, 2012. Her body was burnt with petrol.”

Further throwing light on the case he added, “Indrani’s former husband Sanjeev Khanna is an accused in Sheena murder case. During investigation Sanjeev confessed to his involvement in murder. We took him to the spot in Raigad.”

The Mumbai top cop also said that former Star India CEO Peter Mukherjea’s wife had confessed that Sheena was her daughter and that inquiries with the local police at Raigad confirmed driver Shyamvar Rai’s (43)confession.

Total three arrest had been made in the case, he said.

Indrani along with Khanna (50) and Rai (43) allegedly killed Sheena by strangulating her in a car on April 24, 2012 in Mumbai and then drove to Raigad where they disposed the body.

Rai was taken to the spot where they dumped Sheena’s body.

Sheena’s skeletal body was reportedly found on May 23, 2012 by the local police but no case of missing had been registered anywhere.

“There was no missing complaint registered. The case was registered on August 21 after Rai’s arrest for possession of arms illegally,” Maria said.

‘Dental X-ray’ by NGO to determine age of kids flayed

Questions have been raised over the “dental X-ray” method used by a Hong Kong-based NGO for determination of the age of unregistered children here in collaboration with a local dental college.

The NGO, however, rejected the charge holding it had applied only a “tested and proven” method developed by clinicians in India and abroad.

Dubbing it as “unethical and illegal”, former Secretary of Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), K S Parthasarathy, today claimed this method of imaging of bones or teeth can never indicate precisely the chronological age of an individual.

He was referring to media reports that the NGO, Date of Birth Foundation (DoBF), has issued age certificates to as many as 102 children including orphans after a dental college in Navi Mumbai carried out jaw line X-rays and calcium tests.

“On the basis of my own experience and different citations of journals and institutes, I roundly condemn that the children’s age determination by using dental x-rays is unethical, imprecise and potentially illegal,” Parthsarathy said in a statement.

Citing various medical reviews from British Medical Bulletin, Medical Research Council’s Centre of Epidemiology for Child Health, UCI Institute of Child Health-UK, Centre for Migration Policy Research, Department of General Paediatrics of Great Ormond Street Hospital London, he said imaging of bones or teeth can never indicate precisely the chronological age of the individual.

Countering the argument that age determination is an administrative requirement, he also said that use of X-rays for satisfying an administrative reason is not justified.

X-ray is a double-edged sword. Children are vulnerable and are many more times radiosensitive than adults, he said.

Dental x-rays expose radiosensitive tissues such as bone marrow, thyroid, brain and eye lens, and unnecessary application of x-rays which is a potential carcinogen and can in no way be justified unless the exposed subject has direct health benefit, Parthasarathy added.

The Atomic Energy (Radiation Protection) Rules, 2004 read with the mandatory Safety Code on Regulation of Nuclear and Radiation Facilities calls for strict adherence to AERB regulations with respect to radiation protection, he said.

HC hails BMC’s move to set up system for pothole complaints

Appreciating Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) move to set up a grievance redressal mechanism to enable citizens to lodge complaints about potholes, the Bombay High Court asked the civic body to give a wide publicity to this measure.

“No authority can dispute that there are large number of potholes in the city (Mumbai) and other districts of the state. There has been a failure on the part of the authorities to perform their duties. Now that a grievance redressal mechanism has been set up in compliance with our earlier orders, it is the responsibility of the authorities to give it a wide publicity,” a division bench of justices A S Oka and K R Shriram said.

BMC counsel A S Sakhre today informed the court that since June 1, when the redressal mechanism has been set up, 3,760 complaints were received, out of which, 3,265 complaints have been attended to and the concerned road has been repaired.

“The website, in which citizens have to lodge their complaints, is easily accessible from Android phones. But Apple phone users cannot download it due to security reasons.

We have written to Apple and requested them to permit the site,” Sakhre said.

“It is good that in such a short span of time so many complaints have been filed. All technical issues can be sorted out in due course of time,” Justice Oka said.

The court has directed all the authorities to file an affidavit by September 10 stating what steps it has taken towards addressing the pothole issue, how many complaints they have received and the action taken thereafter.

The high court had taken suo moto (on its own) cognisance of the issue of potholes following a letter written by high court judge Gautam Patel. On May 20, the high court had observed that citizens have a fundamental right to good roads and that it is the state government’s statutory obligation to provide roads, which are free of potholes.

Sanjay Dutt walks out of jail on parole for 30 days

Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, who is serving a five-year jail term in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case, walked out of the Yerawada prison on a 30-day parole after he cited his daughter’s illess.

In his application for parole, Dutt had sought the leave, saying he needed to be with his ailing daughter, according to prison officials.

The 56-year-old actor has been attracting flak from many quarters for frequent leave of furlough and parole granted to him since May 2013 when his sentence began here after being held guilty for illegal possession of arms under the Arms Act in the Mumbai bomb blast case.

The jail administration has, however, denied that he was being given a “special and lenient” treatment as alleged by many social and political organisations.

Dutt left for his Mumbai residence after his release on parole.

Will order probe if RK Singh’s claims on Dawood Ibrahim substantiated: Maharashtra CM

Describing as “serious” the purported claims by BJP leader and former home secretary RK Singh regarding Mumbai Police botching up a bid to go after fugitive don Dawood Ibrahim, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday said he will order a probe into the matter if the charges are substantiated.

“It’s a very serious allegation and, if substantiated, we will hold an inquiry,” the Maharashtra Chief Minister said.

“Such people don’t deserve to remain in service,” he said when asked about Singh’s allegation that some personnel in Mumbai Police had foiled a plan to bring Dawood to India.

In an interview to a news channel, Singh had talked about a botched operation to target Dawood. However, the former home secretary had made it clear that he cannot say it was confirmed and that he does not have any evidence.

“A group was being trained to target Dawood, but he had people in Mumbai Police on his ‘pay roll’ who were alerted. The Mumbai Police came saying there is a warrant against them. But I cannot say it is confirmed. I have just heard…I don’t have evidence,” Singh had said.

Singh had claimed that India had planned a covert operation to target Dawood which was launched when Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the prime minister, but it was compromised by some corrupt elements in Mumbai Police.

Six killed, Army called in as Patel stir turns violent in Gujarat

violent-in-GujaratThe Patel reservation agitation in Gujarat has taken a deadly turn. Six people have died in incidents of violence reported across Gujarat in the last 24 hours.

Campaign leader Hardik Patel has given a 36 hours ultimatum to the government to take action against the police officers who beat up the protesters on Tuesday night.

Apprehending more trouble, curfew was clamped in parts of Ahmedabad and other major cities across the state on Wednesday. Apart from Ahmedabad, curfew had been clamped in Surat, Mehsana, Rajkot, Jamnagnar and Patan cities.

Fresh violence broke out during the day-long bandh called by the Patel outfit demanding OBC quota for the community in Gujarat, a day after the mega rally.

In a televised address in Gujrati, Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed for calm and emphasised that all issues can be resolved through talks.

“In the land of Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel, the way violence has been resorted to as a tool. I appeal to all brothers and sisters of Gujarat that they should not resort to violence. The only ‘Mantra’ must be ‘Shanti’ (peace),” said Modi, who has been Chief Minister of the state for 12 years.

About 5,000 paramilitary personnel were on Wednesday rushed to Gujarat in the wake of violence.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh spoke to Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel on Tuesday morning and assured her of full central help to tackle the situation.

Hardik blamed police for the violence and said the agitation will intensify in the coming days. Rejecting suggestions that the protesters started the violence last night, he accused the police of trying to “disrupt” the “movement” at the behest of the political establishment.

“Police have recovered bodies of three persons who were suspected to have been killed in violence spread across the city,” police spokesman ND Trivedi said.

According to a senior police official, two persons died in police firing in Vastral area, while body of a man was found in Ghatlodia in the city.

“Girish Patel (47) and his son Siddharth Patel (20) were killed in police firing late last night,” he said.

“The incident took place when a mob tried to snatch the weapons of police. These two had tried to snatch a rifle of a policemen and during the scuffle it went off causing the casualties,” he claimed.

In Ghatlodia, police recovered the body of a man who died due to severe head injury. The deceased is believed to have been beaten up in the clash last night, police said.

Normal life was paralysed as schools, colleges, business establishments including banks and public transport remained closed in most places in view of the bandh call given by 21-year-old Hardik after his brief detention on Monday when he was protesting for quota at the GMDC ground.

Incidents of arson and stone-pelting were reported in many parts of Surat city, when Patel community members came out in large numbers to “enforce” the bandh.

Forged PMO letter: CBI arrests absconding accused

CBI has arrested an absconding accused who had submitted a forged letter of the then Joint Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office allegedly in a bid to secure admission into an engineering course at a Lucknow college.

Farhan Akhtar, a resident of Mau district of Uttar Pradesh, had allegedly submitted the forged letter of the then Joint Secretary in the PMO, Sanjay Mitra, dated July 31, 2010, to the vice chancellor of Lucknow’s Integral University recommending that he be given admission in an engineering course.

Vice Chancellor SW Akhtar suspected the genuineness of the letter and referred the matter to the PMO, which informed him that the letter was forged.

Officer on Special Duty in the PMO, KL Dhingra, had filed a complaint with CBI in this regard in April, 2011, following which the agency registered a case of cheating on October 7, 2011.

“After investigation, a charge sheet was filed on June 28, 2013, against said accused (under charges of cheating and forgery among others)… In the Court of Special Judicial Magistrate, CBI Cases, Lucknow. A supplementary chargesheet… was filed on March 7, 2014, against said accused and another accused in the court,” stated a CBI spokesperson.

Rahul Gandhi should take charge as Congress president soon: Sachin Pilot

Rahul Gandhi should take over as Congress president soon, says Rajasthan Congress chief Sachin Pilot who also wants Sonia Gandhi to remain the parliamentary party head to guide the organisation.

Pilot feels that the Congress vice president has been able to energise the party after the rout in the Lok Sabha elections and has been leading it from the front by taking on the ruling BJP inside and outside Parliament.

“Rahul Gandhi should take charge soon (as party president),” he told a news agency while insisting that it was his personal view and the Congress Working Committee will take a call on Rahul’s elevation. “It will be collective decision of the party,” he said.

Pilot, who was handpicked by Rahul to lead the Rajasthan unit after it was decimated in both Assembly as well as Lok Sabha polls, emphasised that Sonia Gandhi will continue to be the “guiding force” for the party.

He said Rahul’s strategy is to build the party in the states so that it regains its strength by next election in 2019 for a comeback at the Centre.

He also rejected the charge that the Congress was being “obstructionist” by stalling Parliament, saying it was the main opposition party’s duty to highlight BJP leaders’ alleged involvement in Lalit Modi issue and Vyapam scam.

“Just because you have got a majority does it mean that you have got a blank cheque to do as you wish?” he said, attacking the Narendra Modi government over its “stubbornness” on the land bill and “failure” to reach out to the opposition.
