NCP workers to court arrest on Sept 14 in Marathwada

Sharad-PawarAccusing the BJP-led Maharashtra government of “ignoring” the plight of farmers, opposition NCP on Sunday said it will launch a ‘jail-bharo’ agitation in the drought-hit Marathwada region on September 14 to highlight the troubles being faced by farmers.

After his tour of the affected region that concluded on August 16, NCP chief Sharad Pawar chaired a meeting of party leaders from the region to discuss solutions for the ongoing water crisis and the demands the party would be placing before the government.

“To bring to the government’s attention the plight of farmers, we will start a jail bharo (court-arrest) aandolan on September 14 in every district of Marathwada. We will also hold protests in the offices of district officers and tehsildars,” NCP state unit president Sunil Tatkare said.

He said the NCP wanted government to immediately waive off debts of farmers and make available drinking water for people and animals by increasing the number of tankers being sent to the region.

“The government should immediately start their own cattle sheds to take care of farmers,” Tatkare said.

He also demanded that government exempt children of farmers from paying fees and make arrangement for their meals.

“The government also needs to waive off electricity bills of farmers and implement the MGNREGA scheme on farmers’ fields so that they can get some productive work to do,” he said.

The senior NCP leader also asked government to ensure that farmers get at least Rs. 25 for every litre of milk being sold by farmers.

Devendra Fadnavis reviews Marathwada water situation

Devendra (2)Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday chaired Aurangabad division review meeting to discuss the water scarcity situation in Marathwada region.

“I chaired a drought mitigation meeting at Aurangabad where we discussed all measures that can be taken to provide respite to people. We are trying to ensure that water supply to residents and fodder supply for livestock reaches the region,” Fadnavis said.

According to latest official figures, only eight per cent of water is left in reservoirs of Marathwada, one of the worst drought-hit regions of Maharashtra. He said planning was done to supply cattle fodder through “hydroponic technique” and water to Latur city through railway wagons.

“We have also planned to discharge water from upper dams so that the dams in the lower region receive adequate amount of water,” he said. Fadnavis further said that he has instructed officials to hold gramsabhas in every village of Marathwada region to apprise people of the 27 measures taken by the government to deal with water crisis in parched conditions.

National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme will be taken up on a large scale now and water conservation work in farm ponds and wells will be relentlessly done, he said.

According to an official from the Chief Minister’s Office, Maharashtra, since June, has received around 500 mm or 59.3 per cent rains against the normal of 831.4 mm. Currently, there is a total of 18,018 TMC (thousand million cubic feet) water in the state’s 2,229 reservoirs, which is 48 per cent of the total usable capacity. In 2013, it was 76 per cent, while last year it was 61 per cent.

State ministers Eknath Khadse, Pankaja Munde, Diwaker Raote, Dr. Deepak Sawant, Baban Rao Lonikar, Dilip Kamle and other ministers were also present at the meeting.

Radhe Maa in fresh trouble, now for threatening; Punjab Police serves notice

In fresh trouble for the controversial ‘godwoman’ Radhe Maa, the state police has issued a summon for her, following a complaint lodged by a local resident Surinder Mittal, accusing her of trying to bribe him, threatening, torturing, seducing, hurting his religious sentiments and also for spreading obscenity and vulgarity.

Mittal who is also a former district president of VHP has even accused Radhe Maa of disturbing him late at night.

Following the complaint was filed, the self-styled godwoman had been asked to join investigation in connection with Mittal’s complaint submitted to Kapurthala SSP Rajinder Singh about 10-days ago, cops said. A special police messenger carried the notice to Mumbai and served it on Saturday.

The Punjab Police also said that if Radhe Maa does not respond within ten days, she will be sent summons again.

Furthermore, in the complaint, Mittal had also demanded registration of a case against Radhe Maa’s sister Rajjo Maasi, her daughter-in-law Megha, her close associate Ritu Sareen also called as Chhotti Maa and her follower, Mumbai-based Sanjeev Gupta, they said.

Mittal had submitted recordings of his telephonic conversations with Radhe Maa and her sister in April last and printouts of WhatsApp messages from their mobile phones and that of her daughter-in-law.

He further alleged that he was offered money and when he rejected them and he started getting threats.

He claimed she was “falsely claiming herself as incarnation of goddess” and was hurting religious sentiments and spreading obscenity.

The SSP had marked the complaint to Phagwara police, which, after perusing it, sent a ‘parwana'(notice) to her through a special messenger to Mumbai, they said.

When contacted, Phagwara DSP Manpreet Singh Dhillon confirmed it.

He, however, clarified that only a notice was served.

“No summons were sent to her and no case was yet registered against her. She has only been asked to join the investigations,” said Dhillon.

Recently, the self-proclaimed ‘godwoman’ who is also accused in a dowry harassment case, and known for her lavish lifestyle and high-profile ‘devotees’, stirred a controversy after several objectionable pictures of her surfaced in the media.

Bhiwandi powerlooms to go on strike from today

Around nine lakh powerlooms in Bhiwandi will go on strike from today, to press for their demands including ban on import of clothes from China.

The Bhiwandi Power loom Association will also send one lakh postcards to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to draw his attention towards the crises in the sector.

They are protesting against hike in power tariff, obstruction in their work by yarn producers and are asking for permission to export their cloth.

Bhiwandi Powerloom Association spokesperson Sharadram Sejpal said that around nine lakh powerlooms will go on strike from tomorrow.

He alleged that hike in power tariff has always been ignored by the government and that yarn producers are exploiting powerloom owners.

“Yarn traders have a strong association and they use their might to change the price of yarn everyday. It affects the production cost of our cloth,” Sejpal said.

“There is a slight margin of profit in cloth production since China has captured the Indian market, and in such a situation a difference of Rs. 10 affects us a lot,” he added.

Sejpal demanded that there should be a ban on import of Chinese clothes as they are cheaper than Indian clothes.

“Production cost of cloth depends upon labour charges, power charges and yarn prices. Ultimately, rate of cloth production in India is costlier than that of China,” Sejpal said.

“We will send one lakh postcards to the PM and will demand that the government impose heavy import duty on Chinese clothes to protect the domestic sector,” Sejpal said.

In 2012, same thing was done with Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi, against Local Body Tax, he added.

A few powerloom owners have decided to keep their looms open as they have already lost Rs. 150 crore per day since last Monday.

Robbers eye pricey onion, 700 kg stolen in Wadala

As onion prices hit the roof, robbers targeted a shop in suburban Mumbai and fled with 700 kg of kitchen staple worth about Rs. 50,000, leaving the shocked owner in tears.

Fourteen sacks of onion were stolen from a shop of 55-year-old vegetable vendor Anant Naik at Prateeksha Nagar in Wadala apparently between Friday night and Saturday morning, police said.

“The sacks containing about 700 kgs of onions got stolen,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Detection) Dhananjay Kulkarni said.

“Naik had covered his stock of onions at around 9.30pm on Friday and left for home. When he returned on Saturday morning, 700 kg of onions kept in 14 sacks were missing,” he told the police.

The stolen onion stock was estimated to be worth Rs 50,000, police said.

A case has been registered in this regard under IPC section 379 (theft) at Wadala TT police station, they added.

The wholesale onion prices yesterday touched Rs. 57 per kg at Lasalgaon in Maharashtra, Asia’s biggest onion market, raising the possibility of further spike in retail prices in most parts of the country adding to consumers’ woes.

In the price-sensitive Delhi market and some other parts of the country, retail onion prices have already gone up to Rs. 80 per kg depending on the quality of the crop.

In spite of several government measures, the prices of onion have increased unabated both in the wholesale and retail markets in the last few weeks due to tight supply following shortfall in domestic output.

Also, the likely fall in this year’s kharif (summer) crop due to deficit rainfall has further added fuel to the price rise.

Cancellation of talks by Pakistan is unfortunate: Rajnath Singh

RajnathCancellation of NSA talks by Pakistan is “unfortunate”, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said on Sunday and made it clear that the possibility of any future dialogue will depend on the neighbour.

He underlined that India stands for dialogue and cordial relationship with Pakistan, a day after the talks between NSA Ajit Doval and his counterpart Sartaj Aziz were called off.

“The cancellation of NSA-level talks between India and Pakistan is unfortunate. India is in favour of dialogue,” Singh said on the sidelines of a function at Sanskrit Vidyapeeth.

On Pakistan blaming India for cancellation of talks, the Home Minister said, “It is Pakistan which has cancelled the talks and not India.”

He said that India has always been of the view of maintaining good and cordial relationship with the nighbours and its efforts would continue.

“But Pakistan should not have deviated from the agenda decided during the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif (in Ufa in July),” he said.

On Pakistan’s criticism of India’s objections to Aziz’s meeting with Kashmiri separatist leaders, Singh said, “the thing was that there will be no third party in NSA-level talks. It was only NSA level talk. There was nothing like that others too will hold talks before, later or in between.”

The Union Minister said Pakistan should have held talks as per pre-decided agenda.

On Pakistan’s claim that Kashmir was the main agenda, the Home Minister said, “then why was it not decided earlier that when it would be part of NSA level talks? It was never an issue on agenda.”

India has maintained that terror was the only agenda on the talks between the two NSAs.

Asked about possibility of any dialogue in future, Singh said, “go and ask Pakistan, how can I reply to it.”

On being asked about the next step of India, the Home

Minister said it was upto Pakistan to decide.

“As far as India’s intention is concerned, I want to make it clear that it is in favour of having good and cordial relationship with its neighbour,” he said.

Singh had yesterday said that India “sticks to its stand” that dialogue must be held only on terrorism at the Indo-Pak NSA-level talks.

Noting that the agenda for the talks was set in Ufa, the minister had said Pakistan must not deviate from it.

“The agenda decided at the talks which took place between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistan Premier Nawaz Sharif in Ufa was acceptable to both the sides,” he said.

“India sticks to that agenda and that cannot not be changed,” he had said.

We seek to empower madrasa students with edu, skill: Heptulla

Emphasising the Centre’s “growth for all” vision, Union Minority Affairs Minister Najma Heptulla on Sunday said that her ministry aims to engage the students in madrasas with education and skill development, so that they are not distracted by anything else.

“Last year in November, we launched the Maulana Azad National Academy for Skills (MANAS), and our Prime Minister has often laid emphasis on seeing a Quran in one hand of a madrasa student, and a computer in the other.

“And, in line with his vision and advice, I want to see a ‘kalam’ (pen) in one of their hands, and an ‘auzar’ (tool) in the other. So, that they become ideal Indians. And, so, that they don’t have to think of anything else,” Heptulla said.

The Union minister was speaking at the opening of an ‘Inter-religious Seminar on Communal Harmony and Peace’ organised by the All-India Catholic Union (AICU) at the India Islamic Centre.

At the programme, which was attended by a host of faith leaders from across the spectrum, Heptulla also condemned violence and terrorism being perpetrated in the name of religion.

“We see religion today being used to divide and kill people…But, no religion or messenger of god ever talked of killing people…And, India’s unity in diversity is our treasure, and it has been so for ages.

“So, we need to have peace, amity, prosperity among us, and, if you ask two persons from different communities who their enemies are, they both will say poverty, backwardness …” she said.

The minister said in the spirit of communal harmony, people from six notified communities are part of her ministry.

“There was meeting at Atal ji’s place. Advani ji, Yashwant Sinha ji, George Fernandes, Sharad Yadav and Nitish Kuamr were also present at the meeting. Everyone voiced their opinion. Then Atal ji said that make Ram Vilas ji the Chief Minister, the government will run smoothly as he has a nature of taking everyone along. Then I went to him and said don’t push me into this,” Paswan said.

“Then we had a separate discussion and I said that I don`t want to. He was upset with this and said that make whoever you wish to but the government will not last long..So, I refused on my own.I have been in national politics for a long time and when one has a national image then there is a hesitation to get into state politics,” he added.

VK Singh’s daughter joins OROP protest, calls for speedy implementation

Union Minister and former Army chief Gen (retd) VK Singh’s daughter Mrinalini joined One Rank One Pension (OROP) protest at Jantar Mantar on Sunday and called for its speedy implementation.

“I am there to support the cause of ex-servicemen because I am an ex-servicemen’s daughter,” said Mrinalini.

Mrinalini, the wife of an Army officer, said, “This is a just cause and the matter has been pending for many years. I have come here as the daughter of an ex-serviceman to give support to the veterans who have served the country but are now protesting for their rights for over two months”.

Asked if her father, Minister of State for External Affairs Singh, approves her joining the protest since he is serving in the Narendra Modi government, she said, “I have not sought his permission and neither do I need his permission. I have come straight from Hisar because I feel for the cause. A few years down the line, I will also become the wife of an ex-serviceman.”

She added that she has full faith in Prime Minister Narendra Modi who has promised the OROP.

Representatives of ex-servicemen have been protesting for the implementation of ‘One Rank, One Pension’ scheme for the last over two months and are likely to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi next week to press for early implementation of their demand.

The protest over the delay in the implementation of the One Rank One Pension scheme continued for the 70th day with three veterans observing an indefinite fast for nearly a week.

Support also poured in the form of monetary assistance and other things with NGOs, individuals and organisations coming forward to back the veterans.

The ex-servicemen are hoping to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and have sought help from Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar for this.
