Katti Batti’s Payal tougher to play than Datto: Kangana Ranaut

KangnaKangana Ranaut said that her role in the forthcoming film Katti Batti has been the toughest she has ever portrayed so far in her career.

She said: “The character of Payal which I have portrayed in the film is the toughest character so far in my career, which I’m very sure the audience will get to know once the film releases.”

“There are some features in my character which have not yet been revealed in the trailer and in the film’s promos, as we want those hidden features only to be revealed once the film releases,” Kangana said.

“I had said earlier during the release of Tanu Weds Manu Returns that my character of Datto in that film was quite tough. But now, after portraying the character of Payal in Katti Batti, I feel this character has been the toughest in my films.”

Babasaheb Purandare the Maharashtra Bhushan

State government refuses to bow down to opposition pressure, confers Maharashtra Bhushan award to Purandare.

Babasaheb-PurandareThe Maharashtra government has honoured octogenarian historian Babasaheb Purandare with the Maharashtra Bhushan award despite facing stiff resistance from opposition parties like Congress and NCP. NCP chief Sharad Pawar questioned the government’s decision by saying that Purandare is not a ‘historian’. Pawar also added that he had read Purandare’s books but he doesn’t support his derogatory writing. Former NCP Minister Jitendra Awhad had urged the government to withdraw the award. NCP leaders also alleged that Purandare had distorted history and tarnished Chhatrapati Shivaji’s image by casting aspersions on his biological parentage in the context of the role played by his guru Dadaji Konddev. Several Maratha groups have been opposing the award to Purandare.

Maharashtra Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis said, “People are indulging in politics in the name of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. First recognise the true Shivaji and the work done by him and later pass comments. He was known for his administrative skills and is an inspiration for all of us. We have taken a right step to honour Babasaheb Purandare.”

Education Minister, Vinod Tawde said, “I had read Mr Purandare’s books. He has made a vital contribution to the literature in the state and his books are very popular.”

Industries Minister, Subash Desai said, “I am pleased to hear that the state government has conferred the Maharashtra Bhushan award to Babasaheb Purandare. He is an inspiration for all of us.”

Slamming critics opposing the government’s decision to confer Maharashtra’s highest award on Babasaheb Purandare, Shiv Sena heaped praises on the historian crediting him for instilling ideals of Shivaji Maharaj among people.

“Shivaji Maharaj has been used time and again in politics but one person who truly understood the ideals of Shivaji and instilled them in people all his life is Purandare,” Sena said in an editorial in party mouthpiece ‘Saamana’.

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena Chief, Raj Thackeray supported the government’s decision to honour Purandare. He said, “It is Sharad Pawar and certain leaders of BJP behind this controversy. Their main grouse is how can a Brahman Chief Minister bestow an award to Purandare (who is also a Brahmin).”

“Fadnavis is one of the youngest leaders in the party who has been made the CM. Certain BJP leaders are unhappy with this and had deliberately chosen a Brahmin name for this award to create a controversy,” Thackeray added.

MNS activists had burnt the effigy of NCP chief Sharad Pawar, a day after their party president Raj Thackeray accused the Maratha strongman of indulging in “dirty politics” over the state government’s decision to confer the Maharashtra Bhushan award to Babasaheb Purandare.

The Bombay High Court rejected a petition seeking a direction to the state government to withdraw its decision to confer the prestigious “Maharashtra Bhushan” award on veteran historian and writer Babasaheb Purandare.

A bench of justices Naresh Patil and S B Shukare turned down the petition, saying that it was devoid of merits. The judges also imposed costs of Rs 10,000 on the petitioners.

Calling it a “publicity stunt,” state Advocate General Anil Singh said the petition should be dismissed as it was not maintainable.

Sharad Pawar had appealed to everyone to put an end to the controversy. He said, “I can understand that to get noticed you have to drag my name into any issue. But I would like to appeal to all to put an end to this award controversy.”

Babasaheb Purandare is a well-known writer and theatre personality from Maharashtra, known for his ballads and writing on Maratha warrior Shivaji. He is well known for his popular play on Shivaji, Jaanta Raja. He is also known for his significant contribution to the Shiv Sena, along with Bal Thackeray, in the early 70s.

Maharashtra Bhushan is the highest and prestigious award presented annually by the Maharashtra state government since 1996 for significant contribution in various fields.

Shiv Shahir Babasaheb Purandare the ‘Maharashtra Bhushan’

No politics or pressure could stop Babasaheb Purandare to be the ‘Maharashtra Bhushan’. The Hon. High Court not only dismissed the PIL against presentation of ‘Maharashtra Bhushan’ to Shiv Shahir Babasaheb Purandare but slammed a fine of Rs. 10,000 against the petitioners. ‘It’s a mere publicity stunt’, said the Court. What more to say? I hope the message is loud and clear.

Ceremony to bestow the Maharashtra Bhushan, the top honour of the Maharashtra state, on Babasaheb Purandare, a 93-year-old historian, the government managed to deliver. Purandare, a writer and playwright who is popularly known as Shiv Shahir or Shivaji’s bard, is the author of a series of works written over 60 years on Maratha warrior king Chhatrapati Shivaji.

Opposing the choice of Purandare, Maratha organisations have not only protested but gone violent too, a public interest litigation was filed on calling for the ceremony to be stalled, the Congress and NCP have both opposed the move, and intellectuals, littérateurs and activists are joining the issue. The principal allegation against Purandare is of having distorted history, chiefly through claims regarding Shivaji’s parentage and his mother’s caste. The current charge against Purandare is being led by the same Maratha organisations that had marshalled the successful demand for a ban on James Laine’s book on Shivaji. Many others too have opposed the government’s choice for the award, including Jnanpith awardee Balchandra Nemade, and member of Parliament Udayan Raje Bhosale, a descendant of the Maratha king.

The opposition to Purandare’s work is not new and it was emerged in last decade through a late analysis of his writing. The opponents, mostly Maratha organisations including some anti-Brahmin activists, have objected to certain references to Shivaji’s parents, particularly to his mother Jijamata. The other problem with Purandare’s work is his representation of Shivaji as an anti-Islamic ruler. The antipathy to presenting Shivaji as anti-Muslim is complex. The king, whom school textbooks in the state depict as the heroic slayer of the much larger Afzal Khan and who outwitted Mughal emissary Shaista Khan, is also described as a secular leader and administrator, but the Maratha organisations’ view is contextualised in a sometimes extreme anti-Brahmin stand in which is dovetailed support for Muslim and Dalit issues. Anyway, court has slammed the petitioner and Purandare received his award. Everything came to halt on a good note.

Balwant Moreshwar Purandare works are mostly based on the events related to the life of Shivaji, the 16th-century founder of the Maratha Empire. As a result, he is sometimes termed as Shiv-Shahir (“Shivaji’s bard”). He is mostly known for his popular play on Shivaji, Jaanta Raja which was popular not only in Maharashtra but also in Andhra Pradesh and Goa. Purandare has also studied the history of the Peshwas of Pune. He is also known for his significant contribution along with Madhav Deshpande and Madhav Mehere as senior party leaders in the early 70’s of Shiv Sena along with Bal Thackeray.

Yesterday, he was awarded with Maharashtra Bhushan Award, Maharashtra’s highest civilian award. Purandare had started writing stories related to the period of Shivaji’s reign at a very young age, which were later compiled and published in a book titled “Thingya”. His other works include books titled Raja Shiva-Chatrapati and Kesari, and a book on life of Narayanrao Peshwa. However, the most well-known of his works is the drama, Jaanata Raja, a widely popular play on Shivaji Maharaj published and first staged in 1985. Since then the drama has been staged over 864 times in 16 districts of Maharashtra, Agra, Delhi, Bhopal, and the United States. Originally written in Marathi, this work was later translated into Hindi. This drama is performed by over 200 artists, as well as elephants, camels and horses. Generally the performance of this drama begins around Diwali each year.

The behaviour of the opposition politicians was strange, especially Maharashtrians were opposing another Marathi. When Sachin Tendulkar was awarded BHARAT RATNA at such a young age, while building his own image and by becoming billionaire every Maharashtrian had justified it? NCP leaders say Purandare is not a historian then why didn’t they question Sachin Tendulkar’s credibility and why he was awarded BHARAT RATNA. What a mockery of democratic process. Anyway, there are many such incidences where Marathi manoos and Marathi political leaders have shown double standards, but finally Shiv Shahir Babasaheb Purandare has been awarded with the ‘Maharashtra Bhushan’.

We, the Afternoon Voice Team congratulate such a great legend for the award and also feel proud to be a part of the ‘Land of Maharashtra’.

During the questioning, the ‘godwoman’ admitted that she knew Nikki Gupta. However, when police asked her as to why was she angry with Gupta and why didn’t she interfere and try to sort out the matter, Radhe Maa maintained two minutes of silence and gave a vague reply saying ‘just like that’.

Radhe Maa claims to be a self-confessed fan of actor and former adult movie star Sunny Leone. Her pictures in short dresses, gyrating to Bollywood tunes with her devotees during satsangs (religious discourses) have gone viral on the social media networks.

Cases pending in Bombay High Court on a rise, reveals RTI

The pendency of cases in Bombay High Court continues to rise, even as the number of ongoing cases in district and subordinate courts registered an upsurge this year, an official data said. The number of pending cases under different laws, Acts and tribunals in Bombay High Court and its Nagpur, Aurangabad and Goa benches have gone up from 3,51,297 in 2010 to 3,76,604 in 2015, revealed an RTI query, filed by Pune-based activist Vihar Durve.

Total 8,19,184 (fresh) cases were instituted from January 2010 to June 2015 while 7,80,763 cases were disposed of by all benches of Bombay HC, it revealed. As regards the district judiciary (districts and subordinate courts), the overall number of pending cases went down over the years, but 2015 witnessed a considerable rise.

While in 2010, a total 39.05 lakh cases were pending in districts and subordinate courts, the number decreased over the years and it came down to 28.69 lakhs in 2014. However, the figure went up this year and total 29.51 lakhs cases were pending by June this year in districts and subordinate courts, as per the RTI. From 2010 to June 2015, total 98.16 lakh fresh civil and criminal cases were instituted while 1.30 crore cases were disposed by all districts and subordinate courts.

The RTI query has also revealed that actual strength of judges in Bombay High Court has gone significantly down as there were 61 judges working out of sanctioned 75 judges in 2010. In 2015, there were only 65 judges working with the Bombay High Court as against the sanctioning strength of 94. The number of judicial officers in Maharashtra has also seen a significant decline.

According to the RTI reply, the actual working strength of judicial officers was 1,786 in 2010 against the sanctioned strength of 2,057. This actual working strength came down to 1,784 in 2015 while the sanctioned strength went up to 2,072.

Replying to a query on what the High Court has done to meet the demands of additional courts, the HC’s Public Information Officer said, “High Court vide its letter dated 3rd November 2012 has furnished the detailed information in respect of additional 867 courts of various cadre of Judges in the state of Maharashtra considering the Judge-Case Ratio 1:1000/1200.”

Commenting over the rising cases of pendency and declining number of judiciary staff, Durve said, “Of course, it’s the prime responsibility of state to provide infrastructure and judiciary staff to the fullest, but courts should also consider that the judicial process is causing delay which needs to be improvised. Bombay High Court’s former judge Justice Suresh Hosbet said, ‘Law Commission recommended that there should be at least 200 judges for every 10 lakh population, but today this figure staggers at around 16.8 judges per million of population.’ Hence, recruiting the judges is the first and foremost step to start with, to deliver quick justice and the age of retirement for judges also needs to be increased,” he said.

Another RTI activist Krishnaraj Rao, who has launched a campaign to highlight the delayed justice system in India, said, “This can only happen in India where judges enjoy month long vacations every year despite knowing the staggering figures of pendency of cases.”

Students tortured me; had no choice but to file an FIR: FTII Director Prashant Pathrabe

Amid growing criticism over the arrest of five FTII students by the police, the institute’s director Prashant Pathrabe has come out in defence of his decision to file an FIR against students.

Pathrabe said, “I was kept in illegal confinement by students for about 8-10 hours on Monday night. Six people had been asked to come and 40-50 people came in forcefully and I had no choice but to start a discussion with them.”

“After the discussion on the agenda of assessment, when I told them my decision, they said we will not allow you to go. Initially for couple of hours I refused to call police, but even after 4-5 hours, they did not give in,I had no choice but to call police,” Pathrabe said.

“They formed chains to forcefully block me. I was tortured using interrogation techniques, verbal assault. When the Police came in, there was a scuffle that ensued and in it, they broke telepohone, furniture, the office has been sealed,” he added.

Expressing his anguish over the behaviour of the students, Pathrabe said, “I really wonder by what yardstick you can call such people ‘students’. They wanted to enact a drama, it was all pre planned.”

I had to take the unfortunate step of filing an FIR with the Police yesterday night: FTII Director Prashant Pathrabe

Claiming that he was still in a state of mental shock Pathrabe said, “I had no choice but to take this decision as tolerating this kind of lawless behavior would have emboldened them to do anything further and there should be a deterrent.”

HC upholds life term given to man for killing pregnant wife

The Bombay High Court has upheld the life sentence awarded to a man by a lower court for killing his pregnant wife by setting her afire for not meeting his dowry demands
.
The HC observed that the evidence adduced by the prosecution points at the guilt of the accused.

However, a bench headed by Justice Vijaya Tahilramani, reduced the two-year sentence awarded to the victim’s mother-in-law (on the charge of aiding and abetting the dowry demand) to the period already undergone by her in jail (nine months).

Accordingly, the appeal of Dattatraya More was rejected by the bench while that of his mother Chandrabhaga More was allowed and her sentence reduced from two years to nine months.

More, who hails from Phaltan in Satara district, was married to Jyoti and had two children.

According to prosecution, he used to often beat his wife for not bringing dowry from her house. When she refused to get Rs 5,000 from her mother, More poured kerosene on her on June 2, 2006 and set her ablaze.

Jyoti, who was four-month pregnant, suffered 52 per cent burns and succumbed to her injuries in hospital a few days later.

Police had recorded three dying declarations of Jyoti. While one of them was recorded by a special executive magistrate, two others by a police inspector. Besides, there were oral dying declarations given by Jyoti to her mother, sister and paternal uncle.

“In the cross-examination of these witnesses, it is true that the defence counsel has succeeded in eliciting some inconsistencies or discrepancies, but, in our considered opinion, they do not affect the core of their testimony as to the demands and harassment mated out by both the accused to Jyoti,” the court observed in their order delivered recently.

“Instead of making their evidence suspect in any way, these discrepancies act as inbuilt guarantee of their truthfulness. Considering that marital life of Jyoti was about four to five years and there were several instances of the cruelty meted out to her and also of the unlawful demands, it is but natural that the evidence of witnesses cannot be a parrot like version,” the judges remarked in their judgement.
