With changing time, people may appreciate the strength of RSS

It seems that Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s (RSS) Chief Mohan Bhagwat is worried about the declining attendance at shakhas of RSS. It means youths are being disinterested about visiting the Sangh’s shakas. However, despite these odds Bhagwat asserted that time is ripe to pursue Hindutva agenda across the country. Social media has been a powerful medium in exposing the sinister campaign against RSS. However, many ‘so called seculars’ still talk against Sangh. While reviewing some of the tweets by anti RSS polemicists, it is a need to expose some of the popular myths about RSS. RSS is not just a Hindu or Brahmin’s organisation, it is true nationalist organisation. Members of this organisation belong from other religions too.

Jawaharlal Nehru had invited RSS to participate in the 1963 Republic Day parade. 3500 Swayamsevaks marched on that day, in their typical uniforms. During his final years, Nehru realized the patriotic pulse of RSS, that too only when his Congress party’s foreign policy went seriously wrong resulting in a humiliating defeat at the hands of China. It was RSS that helped Indian soldiers and civilians greatly in 1962, for which even Nehru was forced to invite them to be a part of 1963 Republic Day parade. I am sure the icon of secularism, Nehru would not invite an anti-national organisation to march with Indian Army on the Republic Day. In fact, the secular folks like members of Indian communist parties, were busy raising donations for India’s enemy China during 1962 war. During the 1965 Indo-Pak war PM Shastri requested nationalist RSS to help control traffic in Delhi so policemen could be freed for defence duties. When Pakistanis were trying to take over Jammu and Kashmir, it was swayamsevaks who cleared the snow, so that Indian air force could land their aircrafts.

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh tried introducing new mantra, so that no youth were left behind. RSS is indeed showing good flexibility in embracing change. It is a male-oriented organisation hence there is no-point in talking about women with RSS, as long as they are not insulted or ignored – we must not complain about it. A sign of RSS gaining ground amongst youth / educated class is evident in the number of followers / defenders on social media which is ever increasing. Re-energised by the unbroken momentum of the Modi wave, the RSS is now targeting youths studying at engineering, medical and management institutions as potential cadres as part of a larger move to increase its strength across the country.

After the Modi waves for short time, youth from engineering, medical and management institutions will be urged to join as Swayamsevaks and farmers from villages have also been brought into the fold. Unfortunately, the latest reports suggest that the attendance in the shakhas is going down,” Bhagwat was quoted as saying at a meeting of the Sangh members in Uttarakhand’s Nainital. Over 180 members of several wings of the Sangh were present at the meeting.

In 2012, about 1,000 people attached themselves with us every month through ‘Join RSS’, the online forum. There was a gradual growth in the numbers. The figure increased to 2,500 by 2013 and now about 7,000 people join us every month. The RSS has about 40,000 shakhas across the country, and their aim is to open 4,500 new shakhas every year. The organisation has set up an elaborate network to reach out to people willing to join the RSS. Going by numbers, a 13 per cent increase in shakhas or daily conventions was registered across the country between July 2012 and July 2014. During this period, 4,635 shakhas were opened. In 2012, the RSS had 34,761 active shakhas; that figure rose to 37,125 last year, hitting 39,396 by July this year.

In West Bengal, the growth is three times the national average and the number of shakhas has gone up by nearly 38 per cent. The daily shakha is the most visible symbol of the RSS. Since the BJP-led NDA rule ended in 2004, there had been a fall in the number of shakhas. According to reports, in 2005-06, after the six-year rule of the BJP-led NDA, the number crossed 51,000 but witnessed a decline in the past few years. The RSS wants every shakha to be effective. Once there was an increase in youth participation in the Sangh activities in all spheres of work, especially in voluntary participation.

Back in Delhi, Ram Madhav — the Sangh’s public relations in-charge and now BJP leader — operates out of his plush office in Jangpura. Shuffling between his ipad, iphone and Macbook, RSS is reinventing itself to connect with the new generation. To target the youth, besides the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, the RSS now has its own university, college and hostel pramukhs — there is a special focus on student-dominated towns like Kota. There are 2,000 shakhas exclusively for university students.

Besides reworking shakha-format, new media has been embraced, and the ‘packaging’ of the message has changed. Power Point presentations and documentaries are used in special shakhas. The ‘Join RSS’ link on its website has generated responses; its sympathisers are active on Twitter and Facebook; and they have mailing lists. The RSS is also having an internal debate on whether it is time to change its uniform, the khaki shorts, which isn’t perceived to be popular with the young. I hope as the time change, people may appreciate the strength of Swayamsevaks and their services to this nation.

BJP releases video allegedly showing Uttarakhand CM’s personal secretary seeking bribe from liquor mafia

Harish-RawatIt is an all-out war between the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress as the former has now released a sting video that exposes Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat’s alleged nexus with the state’s liquor mafia. In the video, Rawat’s personal secretary Mohammad Shahid is seen allegedly asking for bribes from liquor barons.

The BJP has demanded Harish Rawat’s resignation as Uttarakhand Chief Minister. Sources said that BJP is expected to expose another Congress Chief Minister in a press conference on Wednesday.

Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said, “Only transportation would happen through Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam, not distribution. And private agencies chosen by Chief Minister Rawat and Shahid were brought on board and in turn passed liquor to retail agencies. There was an understanding of several hundred crores. The Chief Minister’s personal secretary negotiates with these people saying how much are you giving now and the payment would be made in Delhi or Dehradun – 25% now, 75% later. Mohammad Shahid himself is seen in this sting talking to middlemen about how much would be given to him.”

Rawat has denied all the charges and called it a political stunt of the BJP. Denying investigation in the alleged scam, Rawat said, “First verify the authenticity of the CD. There is no question of any investigation unless there is any clue as no private person is involved in liquor licensing system. There is a well established lottery system for liquor license distributions. There is no private person involved in it”

Terming it a desperate attempt of the BJP, Rawat said, “I do not know from where this allegation has come. BJP is desperate and they can go to any extent. I have not seen the original video.”

Rawat is also likely to file an FIR in this regard.

Backing his party colleague, Congress leader Vijai Bahuguna said, “the authenticity of video should be investigated. The officer in video should be removed. Calling somebody guilty on behalf of one video would not be fair. I’m sure Harish Rawat will take appropriate action.”

It pays to be a beggar in Andhra Pradesh: Rs. 5,000 bonanza for those who stay away from ‘Pushkaram’

In a unique initiative to keep them away from the crowded ghats where Godavari Pushkaralu is now being held, beggars have been asked by the Andhra Pradesh government to take Rs. 5,000.

The administration has also promised free food on condition that the beggars keep off the Mahakumbh of the south till July 25.

However, the report suggested that a lot of people, who are not beggars, are also queuing up for the money.

Over 1,000 beggars have been seen thronging the Pushkaram ghats since the commencement of the holy river festival on July 14, the daily said.

As per rules of the government initiative, only those beggars, who have neither ration cards nor access to welfare schemes, are eligible for the offer.

The daily has quoted East Godavari collector and Godavari Pushkaram Organising Committee (GPOC) member H Arun Kumar as saying that Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu decided to reimburse beggars to curb any disruption during the festival.

“So far, we’ve identified 200 beggars within the town, but surprisingly others are approaching us as well. We’ll provide reimbursement to genuine beggars after verification at the end of the Pushkaram,” said Kumar.

The committee is also checking the fingerprints of beggars to ensure reimbursement claimants are not fake.

“The beggar reimbursement scheme is not new for Naidu. The government had used the same trick to shift beggars from Hyderabad to a rehabilitation centre during President Clinton’s visit in 2000,” a police officer said.

Jharkhand Education Minister pays homage to former president Abdul Kalam, garlands his photo

In a bizarre incident, Jharkhand Education Minister Neera Yadav paid homage to former president of India APJ Abdul Kalam at an event in Kodarma by garlanding his photo which is considered inauspicious as it used to pay respect to a person after his death according to the Hindu tradition.

The incident has raised questions over the lack of knowledge of a state Education Minister as she paid homage to a living person.

Not just Yadav, Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Manish Jaiswal, the principal of the school where the event was held were among several other people present. It is shocking that none of the numerous people present knew that they were paying homage to a person who is still alive.

Yadav was invited as the chief guest for the event where she inaugurated the smart classes. Before the inauguration, she garlanded the photo of the former president.

Facing flak over the act, Yadav said that in such schools, photos of great leaders are also garlanded to honour them and is a way to pay respect. She also added that Kalam is a great scientist and there is nothing objectionable in garlanding the picture of a leader.

75 cases of sexual harassment in higher educational institutes

Seventy five cases of sexual harassment cases in higher educational institutes have been reported from across the country between April 2014 and March this year, 27 of which are from Delhi alone, Lok Sabha was informed on Wednesday.

HRD Minister Smriti Irani said the annual return received by UGC about the cases of sexual harassment against women lecturers, professors and research scholars between April 1, 2014 and March 31, 2015 and on the basis of responses from 84 universities showed that there has been 75 such cases.

The figure in Delhi is 27, Uttar Pradesh 23, Haryana 7, Odisha 6, two each in Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and Tripura and one each in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Kerala, Karnataka and Assam, she said in a written reply.

Apart from them, two cases have been received from NIT, one from IGNOU and NEUPA.

“UGC has also reported that complaints have been received against the heads or members of faculties of Punjab University, Jadavpur University, TERI and St Stephens College, Delhi,” she said.

Cases have also been reported against faculty members of Dr. B R Ambedkar National Institute of Technology, Jalandhar and Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology, Surat, she said.

While UGC has sent advisory to all the institutes to have a committee and a separate cell to deal with issues of gender based violence, most of the higher educational institutes have reported concurrence, she said.

Rahul Gandhi was caught in US with drugs, Vajpayee got him released: Swamy

Extending support to Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, who is embroiled in the Lalit Modi controversy, Bharatiya Janata Party leader Subramanian Swamyhas asked the Congress to first look within before blaming others.

In a controversial claim, Swamy had last week alleged that Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi was caught by Federal Bureau of Investigation officials for holding USD 1.60 lakh and white powder in the US in 2001.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi had then called up then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. It was Vajpayee who rang up then US President George Bush and got Rahul Gandhi released, a Hindi daily quoted Swamy as saying.

Swamy then called Raje ‘Jhansi ki Rani‘, who is “capable of sailing through any controversy on her own”.

“Raje is Jhansi ki Rani, who has the capability to protect herself from any odd and if the need arises, I would help her,” he said, while comparing the minister to the popular freedom fighter.

Responding to questions on why no party leader has so far issued any statement in the Chief Minister’s support like in the case of Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj, who is also facing allegations pertaining to Lalit Modi, the leader said, “I know her (Raje). She is capable of protecting herself very well. She does not need the support of any party cadre.”

“What Raje did was just a small favour to an old friend on humanitarian ground, which was not a crime,” he said.

When questioned about allegations on Jhalawar MP and Raje’s son Dushyant Singh for illegal transactions, wherein an amount of over Rs 11 crores was allegedly transferred to the account of Niyant Heritage Hotels Pvt Ltd owned by him, Swamy challenged Congress to take a legal route and face the court.

“If Dushynat has done anything wrong, why did the Congress not go to the court against him and prove that he was guilty?” he asked.

Nicki Minaj, Taylor Swift in Twitter spat

Nicki-Minaj-Taylor-SwiftRapper Nicki Minaj and singer Taylor Swift were caught in a feud on micro-blogging website Twitter.

Minaj was upset because her ‘Anaconda’ visual is not featured in the Video of the Year category of the MTV Video Music Awards.

After the full nominees were announced on Tuesday, Minaj took to Twitter to express her disappointment, and somehow ended up having a Twitter spat with one of the coveted award’s nominees, Swift, reports aceshowbiz.com.

“If your video celebrates women with very slim bodies, you will be nominated for vid of the year,” Minaj tweeted.

Swift, one of only two female artists nominated for the award, felt attacked by Minaj’s remark.

“I’ve done nothing but love & support you. It’s unlike you to pit women against each other. Maybe one of the men took your slot,” the ‘Blank space’ singer responded.

Seemingly confused by Swift’s comment, the ‘Anaconda’ hitmaker wrote back: “Huh? U must not be reading my tweets. Didn’t say a word about u. But u should speak on this… I’m still confused as to why u just tweeted me when I made it abundantly clear…”

Both Minaj and Swift later attempted to end the online argument.

The former then made it clear that she didn’t mean to offend anyone when she ranted about the snub. “Nothing I said had to do with Taylor. So what jabs? White media and their tactics. So sad. That’s what they want,” she said.

As for Swift, she wanted Minaj to perform with her should she win the Video of the Year Award. “If I win, please come up with me!! You’re invited to any stage I’m ever on,” she wrote.

Despite the Video of the Year snub, Minaj’s ‘Anaconda’ is still up for multiple awards at the VMAs, which this year is held on August 30.

Selena Gomez rates her hotness level

Selena-GomezSinger Selena Gomez has rated her looks as merely a six out of 10.

The 23-year-old admitted that while she feels good on days when she is dressed up for an event, she doesn’t rate her looks as highly when she isn’t getting glammed up.

“I would say, like, (on) a premiere day, I would be a good nine. And then, on my every day, I feel like a six. Gosh, that sounds so bad. I feel like a six or a seven,” Gomez told Boston’s 103.3 AMP ‘TJ Show’.

Not responsible for Shelton and Lambert’s divorce: Chris Young

Chris-YoungSinger Chris Young has broken his silence after his name was mentioned as “a contributing factor” in country stars Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert’s divorce.

The “Who I Am With You” singer set the record straight on Twitter about rumours claiming that he hooked up with Lambert, saying it is completely false, reported Ace Showbiz.

“I don’t normally address gossip but in this case I will. My name has been mentioned as a contributing factor in Blake and Miranda’s divorce. That is totally FALSE,” Young, 30, wrote.

He argued that the affair wasn’t true given that he respected the good relationship with the two.

“They are both my friends and I would not betray that friendship,” he added. “Just wanted to clear that up. Love you guys – CY.”

Following the divorce, Shelton, 39, changed his Twitter cover photo, which had been a picture of Lambert’s Marie Claire cover, to a picture of himself performing on the stage. Similarly, Lambert, 31, also replaced an adorable picture of herself and Shelton with a promo picture for her upcoming concert in Nashville.

Centre vs Delhi government

Our parliament is a huge building. The ministry of shipping is located close to the parliament street. Earlier it was much easier to enter these places but now even a maid has to sign a register to take the lift upwards. I do not know how many registers are being filled all over across the country. Carrying identity card and its photocopy has become mandatory almost everywhere. I must congratulate the Passport office for becoming efficient, thanks to the system adopted by TATA consultancy services’s to streamline the passport issuance system. The staff members too are people friendly.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is demanding statehood for Delh. AAP alleges that the BJP is trying to govern Delhi through the Lieutenant Governor — who acts as the Centre’s representative in the capital. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar backed the AAP government’s demand for full statehood for Delhi. Kumar said the AAP government in the capital should have full powers to decide the transfer and posting of bureaucrats

Right from day one, I have mentioned that this guy is a trouble maker. I came to know about his true character while he was campaigning for election in Varanasi. In the rally, Kejriwal spoke about Modi and said “Woh to buri tarah haar raha hai.” I knew here is a man who will tell a blatant lie with a straight face which comes naturally to him.

Petrol and diesel will be dearer in the national capital with the AAP government’s decision to increase VAT rates on them. It is the first hike in Value Added Tax effected by Aam Aadmi Party government since capturing power in Delhi. The decrease in diesel prices would also be less in Delhi due to a hike in Value Added Tax (VAT).

The Delhi Assembly had on June 30 cleared VAT Amednment Bill, tabled by Arvind Kejriwal’s government, which allowed it to increase VAT up to 30% on 11 goods including petroleum products, tobacco and aerated drinks. Moreover, watching movies and television has become dearer in the national capital. Apart from this, watching television through cable and DTH services has become expensive as the decision to increase an entertainment tax on these services from Rs 20 to Rs 40 was also notified by the AAP government.

Regarding Pakistan, a track two diplomacy involving popular figures who will gain easy acceptance there, can work and not any hand shake between Narendra Modi and Nawaz Sharif. Even though official talks must be carried on to sustain engagement between both the nations.
