West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday hit out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accusing it of seeking to tarnish her party’s image.
Speaking shortly after Trinamool Congress won the bypolls in Krishnaganj Assembly seat and Bongaon Lok Sabha seat, the Trinamool Congress chief said, “BJP tried to tarnish the image of TMC, isolate the people, but it is the people who decide. Conspiracy won’t yield results,” said Mamata.
“TMC is a strong party, no one can divide us,” she added.
Mamata’s verbal attack on BJP can be viewed in connection with BJP’s improved showing in the state in Lok Sabha polls last year, and the national party’s push to dent TMC’s voter base.
The bypolls are considered to be important ahead of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation election this year and Assembly Elections in 2016.
Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar on Monday said the government is in the process of making necessary changes in rules and regulations to control pollution.
“As many as 64 government officers gave us suggestions about proper implementation of various policies regarding pollution control. We are making necessary changes in rules and regulations to control pollution,” Javadekar said after launching the ‘Swachh Bharat’ campaign.
“We have detected 17 highly polluted locations and initially 3,000 industries have been selected for installation of pollution control devices for proper effluent discharge,” he said.
The same exercise will be followed for all industries in the country, he added.
Stressing that no damage to the environment will be allowed, he said proper action will be taken against those causing pollution.
Javadekar also said that satellite images of rivers will be used to locate points for sand extraction and assured that no damage to the rivers will be allowed.
On the action being taken against use of plastic bags, the Minister said plastic bags measuring 40 microns and below in width are totally banned and added that the pollution control department has been instructed to immediately seize the stock of such bags found anywhere.
Clean air, clean water, clean power, and green surroundings are the four major tasks determined by the environment ministry, he said while seeking people’s participation to achieve the target.
Later, the minister participated in a road cleaning drive along with students.
Earlier, nearly 5,500 students from 21 schools in Ratnagiri district sung the ‘Swachh Bharat ka irada kar liya hamne’ song, composed by noted lyricist Prasoon Joshi for the Centre’s Clean India campaign.
Days after forming government in the national capital, the maiden press conference of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was left in total chaos on Monday.
Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia left the press conference after journalists wanted party’s clarification over media’s entry inside the secretariat.
According to media reports, journalists were furious over the complete ban of media inside the Secretariat premises.
As media persons protested and demanded an answer to the ban of even accredited journalists inside the Delhi government office, Sisodia, without giving any answer, just walked-off from the press conference.
Meanwhile, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said, “Very unfortunate showdown between media and AAP government.”
In 2013, the AAP government had restricted media entry inside the secretariat. Mediapersons were not allowed to visit the rooms of ministers and other offices inside the Delhi Secretariat.
The Supreme Court on Monday granted bail to Congress leader Rasheed Masood who was disqualified from the Rajya Sabha and jailed for four years after being convicted in a medical admission scam.
The bail by the apex court comes three days after Masood had on Friday moved the SC, filing a plea against rejection of his bail petition by the Delhi High Court.
The former Rajya Sabha lawmaker, in his plea filed through lawyer Archit, sought bail on various grounds including that he is acutely diabetic and taking insulin several times a day besides other medicines for his ailments.
He had challenged the order of the High Court which refused to grant him bail on November 14, last year during the pendency of his appeal against the conviction in the graft case.
Acting on the Congress MP’s plea, the Supreme Court then issued a notice to the CBI, seeking its response.
The 68-year-old Congress leader became the first MP to lose his Rajya Sabha seat in 2013 after the Supreme Court’s ruling on disqualification of convicted lawmakers.
Masood has also challenged the trial court’s verdict convicting him and sentencing him to a four-year jail term.
He was held guilty by the trial court in September 2013 of fraudulently nominating undeserving candidates to MBBS seats allotted to Tripura in medical colleges across the country from the central pool as Health Minister in the National Front government of 1990.
The trial court had also imposed a fine of Rs 60,000 on him.
Masood’s conviction and sentencing was the first case after the apex court judgement that struck down a provision in the Representation of the People Act, under which incumbent MPs and MLAs could avoid disqualification till pendency of the appeal against conviction in a higher court.
Masood, Minister of Health in the VP Singh government between 1990 and 1991, was held guilty of fraudulently nominating his nephew, another juvenile and Sachidanand Dwivedi to MBBS seats allotted to Tripura in medical colleges across the country from the central pool.
The Rashtriya Swayam Sevak (RSS) on Monday targeted the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the party’s disastrous performance in the recent Delhi Assembly polls, in the latest edition of its mouthpiece ‘Organiser’.
Delving into the poll loss, the RSS stated that the BJP’s decision to project ‘parachute CM’ Kiran Bedi at the last moment conveyed a wrong message to the people.
The article further said that the decision to project Bedi as the party’s chief ministerial candidate against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal was a “very late move” and gave out the message that despite having senior leaders in the national capital, the party has already accepted defeat.
The article also pointed out that during Lok Sabha polls, Modi had declared that he had three ‘Vijays’ in Delhi – Vijay Goel, Vijendra Gupta and Vijay Kumar Malhotra.
It further said that three out of four senior BJP leaders, who also have a following in the national capital, were upset at being upstaged.
It seems now that the BJP paid the price as its rank and file didn’t work to win this Assembly Election, the article quoted.
According to reports, a meeting is likely to take place to work on the strategy for upcoming polls in other states.
The BJP faced a rout in the Delhi polls after it managed to win only three seats while AAP swept 67 out of 70 seats. Congress failed to win even a single seat.
In a jolt to Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi, the Patna High Court on Monday restrained his government from taking any policy decisions.
While restraining the Jitan Ram Manjhi government, the HC said that the CM can only work on routine matters till majority is proved on the floor of the House.
It may be recalled that Manjhi has been asked by the state Governor to prove majority on the floor of the Assembly on February 20.
The same was necessitated after JD(U) expelled Manjhi from the party following his failure to step down as CM to make way for Nitish Kumar.
Manjhi has defied party orders calling it illegitimate to remove him as CM. He has also said that he will neither dissolve Assembly nor recommend President’s Rule in the state.
Further, there’s speculation that BJP may back Manjhi during trust vote on February 20.
Restaurants and pubs operating in the commercial areas of the city will function for the entire night. Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria had cleared the proposal but has also imposed a condition that these outlets won’t be allowed to operate from residential areas. If food outlets and pubs in some pockets open till 3.30am then it will boost tourism and business. The Police department will also ask restaurants and outlets to enhance security. Thus Mumbai’s night life will become more hip and happening. The government has been taking various steps to make Mumbai a financial and entertainment hub. People always go to the extremes; they either consume alcohol for the entire night or stay away from it completely. It will be better if the pubs are allowed to operate until 2 am on Fridays and Saturdays.
The MbPT had invited expression of interest to set up the floating hotel and restaurants off Girgaum Chowpatty, Gateway of India and Ferry Wharf. This organization has never bothered about technical advancement in the matter pertaining to port craft, and port cranes. They should have gone in for floating docks like the ones existing in China. The Mumbai police have expressed concern with regard to security and parking issues. Such projects are totally unnecessary.
MbPT has always been headed by an IAS officer and was never known for efficiency and thirst for technical up gradation. We also have read about the “dadagiri” of tourist guides at Elephanta caves. The boats carrying passengers are old without any overhauling. There is no organization to oversee these services.
The government had suspended the services of women in these bars. However, many of these ladies were quite sensitive and socially upto date in discussing various matters. They were largely mis-understood. Dance bar girls were indulging in some obscene acts and there is a need to curb or even ban such things. Unnecessary competition arose between drunk patrons thereby resulting into clashes and increasing crimes.
Beer is a drink that is not harmful if consumed in moderation For e.g a person should not consume more than two bottles. Wines are good. Even if you eat good food in excess, it will upset your tummy so moderation can be enforced by bartenders and managers in a persuasive manner. The police can keep a vigil outside the bars ( a norm followed in foreign countries) and may even take a round inside to check on any excesses. Finally bars should not remain open for the entire night.
‘The Best Proverbs & Quotes’ is a book authored by me for Saint Paul’s Publications, Bandra, Mumbai in the ‘Better Yourself Book’ series. It is a delightful book with lots of phenomenal thoughts from great personalities. The thoughts in this book are based on failure, success, philosophy, education, economics and finance, forgiveness, fame and fortune, leadership, etc. The thoughts are truly inspirational and are so powerful that they can have the ability to change a reader’s way of thinking. The thoughts are effective mostly when one is entangled in a problem, as they provide confidence and aspiration to the soul.
Some of the great personalities whose quotations are featured in this book are of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Alexandre Dumas, George Bernard Shaw, Alexander Pope, Subhas Chandra Bose, Rabindranath Tagore, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Abraham Lincoln, Mark Twain, Albert Einstein, Swami Chinmayananda, Oscar Wilde, Mother Teresa, Thomas Alva Edison and William Shakespeare, to name a few.
One of my favourite quotes featured in this book is the one that is related to books. It says: “Books to the ceiling, books to the sky, my pile of books is a mile high. How I love them, How I read them, I will have a long beard by the time I read them all.” This splendid thought by Arnold Lobel shows his love and devotion towards his books. Another famous quote on books in this book is “Books are the food of youth, delight of old age, ornaments of prosperity, refuge and comfort of adversity, a delight at home, and a companion in travelling.” The quotation is by Marcus Tullius Cicero.
Then there are also many proverbs featured in this book from all over the world like “After dark, all cats are leopards”, “To live long, eat like a cat and drink like a dog”, “To play with a cat, you must not mind her scratch”, “Those who dislike cats, will be carried to the cemetery in the rain”, “An old cat will never learn to dance”, “When elephants fight, the grass dies”, “Saint abroad, devil at home” and “Where God has His Church, the devil will have his chapel.”
This book is a ‘must’ for every individual whether in school or in college, employed or unemployed.
Anybody with a story to tell can write a book — either for their own enjoyment or to publish for all to see (and hopefully buy). If you find yourself weaving creative narratives in your head as you read your favourite novels, or when you are relaxing in the park, consider writing your stories down. Although it may seem daunting, you can do it. Also, take some time, sit around, and just think about what people like to read. Ask your friends and maybe you can come up with an amazing story.
Here are two more quotations on books by Neil Gaiman and Marcus Tullius Cicero.
1. A book is a dream that you hold in your hand.
2. A room without books is like a body without a soul.
India continued its winning streak against Pakistan by defeating them by 76 runs in the World cup match at Adelaide. The men in blue has achieved this feat for the six time in world cup as it remains unbeaten against arch-rivals Pakistan in world cup editions. Vice-captain Virat Kohli knock of 107 guided India to 300/7 which Pakistan failed to chase down, being bowled out for 224 in 47 overs. Fans were glued to their television sets since morning and were watching ball-by-ball update.
Kohli put up a 129 run second-wicket partnership with opener Shikhar Dhawan, who scored his individual 73, then went on to put up a third-wicket partnership of 110 runs Suresh Raina, who hit 74 runs off 56 deliveries that included five fours and three sixes.
Kohli’s century was the first by an Indian in those six World Cup encounters and took his impressive tally to 22 in one-day internationals, joint fourth on the all-time list with his former skipper Sourav Ganguly.
AV spoke to Mumbaikars to know about their reactions about the Indo-Pak match which is one of the important contests in the entire world cup tournament. Here is what they had to say
Hansel Gonsalves, software engineer from Goregaon (W) said, “Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan kept their cool at the crease and played shots responsibly even under immense pressure situation.”
Collice Rodrigues, content writer and photographer from Mira Road (E) said, “The whole credit goes to the Indian team. This specific match builds a lot of pressure; it’s more of a war for these men. Virat did a lovely job and Misbah also played well but unfortunately the time has passed and we Indians are the winners.”
Zoya Salim, photographer, Mira road (E) said, “We all are proud at this moment. Awesome game, well played. Virat Kohli is the first Indian batsman to score a century against Pakistan in the world cup and the previous record was held by Sachin Tendulkar.”
Samkit Parikh, proprietor of Creative Line Computers, Dahisar (E) said, “Suresh Raina, Virat Kohli, Shikar Dhawan and Shami played well. They were well supported by the Indian fans who were eagerly looking forward for this match.”
Reema Ankush, customer service executive from Andheri (East) said, “Today’s hero was Virat Kohli, but I missed Sachin a lot. Pakistan can go back and fight for Kashmir again. #Back to reality #we won’t give it back.”
Maya Mishra from Vasai Road (West) said, “After 1992, Pakistan has never received the opportunity to burst firecrackers. We, Indians have maintained the record of winning against them.”
Titus D’sliva, Vice-principal of a school, Andheri (E) said, “It’s the Indians who were there watching the match and telling the team – GO India GO as if they were playing the World Cup Finals.”
Sagar Vora from Mira road (E) said, “The credit goes to the entire team. Cricket is not an individual game. It’s about team work where 11 players play for emerging victorious.”
Royston Pereira, Associate (Derivatives Operations Dept.) from Mira Road said, “Amazing innings by Virat Kohli and he was well supported by Shikhar Dhawan and Suresh Raina. Also most importantly full marks to Mahendra Singh Dhoni who like always didn’t have the best bowling attack but smartly displayed the art of using his available resources efficiently and effectively.”
Brenden Dcosta from Mira Road (E) said, “Kudos to M.S Dhoni and the entire team. It’s the hard work and routine practice that has led to such a great match winning performance. It’s a great feeling that they won the match that too against a country which is considered an enemy in all aspects. I am PROUD TO BE AN INDIAN.”
Statistics showed that Pakistan have never chased more than 262 successfully and India have always defended a total of 300 or more in the quadrennial event. Both teams allowed the records to continue.
Pakistan started their reply steadily before a three-wicket blitz in two overs at the halfway mark of the innings saw opener Ahmed Shehzad depart for 47 and reduced them to 103 for five.
Skipper Misbah-ul-Haq (76) and Shahid Afridi flirted with a match-changing partnership but once the latter departed for 22 and Wahab Riaz followed in the same over, Pakistan’s hopes of a first win over India in six World Cup attempts was gone.
Indian paceman Mohammad Shami grabbed four wickets as he and Umesh Yadav reduced the Pakistani batting line-up. Mohit Sharma, Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja also picked one wicket each.
Oh! It’s 6 out of six. India got a big reason to celebrate on Sunday. Entire game was very well played by Indian cricketers. Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan also made his cricket commentary debut alongside cricket legends like Kapil Dev and Rahul Dravid. He previously did commentary in Hindi during the World Cup match between India and Pakistan, also shared space with the likes of Arun Lal and Shoaib Akhtar. I thought during the game in excitement, Amitabh Bachchan may repeat his dialogue saying to Pakistan “Rishte me to hum tumhare Baap lagte hai”. The match was thrilling and also exciting. India continues their World Cup domination of arch-rival Pakistan, extending their winning band to six with a lopsided 76-run victory in front of a crowd at the Adelaide Oval that quite easily could have been transplanted from the subcontinent.
The much-anticipated Pool B grudge match, the latest chapter in one of the great rivalries in sport, attracted a passionate crowd of 41,587 to the revamped ground with up to a billion more tuning in on the sub-continent and around the world. It was the two thirds of the crowd dressed in blue representing India who had the most to cheer about, though, as Kohli brushed aside concerns over his recent one-day form with a knock of 107 to drive his side to an imposing tally of 300 for seven.
The first World Cup meeting between the severe rivals was in 1992 – the last time the tournament was co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand and India started their winning sequence in head-to-heads from there. Sachin Tendulkar, who played in the previous five wins but retired in 2013, compared the intensity of the Indo-Pak World Cup clashes with the level of a final. But this game was rarely in Pakistan’s grasp after skipper Dhoni won the toss and batted in ideal conditions. Virat Kohli scored an imperious century as India opened their World Cup defence in convincing fashion with a 76-run victory over Pakistan in a frenzied atmosphere at the Adelaide Oval. Pakistan started their reply steadily before a three-wicket blitz in two overs at the halfway mark of the innings which saw opener Ahmed Shehzad depart for 47 and reduced them to 103 for five.
Indian seamer Mohammed Shami took four for 35 but it was Mohit Sharma who drove the final nail into the coffin when Sohail Khan holed out for seven to end the Pakistan innings at 224 all out. Kohli’s century was the first by an Indian in those six World Cup encounters and took his impressive tally to 22 in one-day internationals, joint fourth on the all-time list with his former skipper Sourav Ganguly. Pakistani Skipper Misbah-ul-Haq (76) and Shahid Afridi flirted with a match-changing partnership but once the latter departed for 22 and Wahab Riaz followed in the same over, Pakistan’s hopes of a first win over India in six World Cup attempts was gone. Dropped from a difficult chance by Yasir Shah off Afridi on seven and again by wicketkeeper Umar Akmal on 76, Kohli otherwise played well and gave few chances in his 126 balls at the crease. Sohail Khan took 5-55 in his first one-dayer since 2011, removing both, Kohli and Raina as well as India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni as three Indian batsmen were sent back in the last couple of overs.
In 1992, at Sydney, the first of a five-match unbeaten streak for India is best remembered for Javed Miandad trolling Indian wicket-keeper Kiran More. The Pakistani batsman jumped up and down – a less-than-subtle imitation of an overly-chirpy More – at the end of a particularly tense over between the two. Despite the win, India failed to reach the last-four stages, while Imran Khan’s “cornered tigers” went on to clinch the title.
In 1996 at Bangalore, an entire nation joined pacer Venkatesh Prasad’s famous send-off to Aamer Sohail – a dramatic reply to the Pakistan opener, who warned Prasad of an imminent spanking at the end of the previous delivery. That dismissal ruined the visitor’s chase, after Ajay Jadeja’s late assault on Waqar Younis – in an era when blatant disregard for the bowler was not commonplace – took India to a good total. Also in 1999, at Manchester, a raucous sell-out at Old Trafford gathered to watch these two rivals, who were, at the time, engaged in the Kargil War. Venkatesh Prasad (5/27) emerged the hero in this battle, and fortunately, fears of fan violence did not materialise. Apart from a few scuffles, the Super Six match – supervised by a massive police contingent – finished without incident. Then in 2003, at Centurion, Sachin Tendulkar’s lashed six off the ‘Rawalpindi Express’ Shoaib Akhtar set the tone for a sublime 98 from the Mumbaikar, which powered India to a successful chase. That brutal maximum, which was followed by an elegant flick to the square-leg boundary, prompted Captain Wasim Akram to later state that for the first and only time in his career, a bowler – a petrified Akhtar – refused to take further part in the match. In 2011 at Mohali, handing Sachin Tendulkar four lives were just asking for trouble. The stalwart’s 85 brought him into the spotlight once again in a World Cup India-Pakistan clash, and took his team to a par-score of 260. A batting collapse from the visitor in this quarterfinal match then extended India’s victorious run.
Now, it was the 6th match and India gave Pakistan an embarrassing 76-run defeat. Pakistan, who has never beaten us in five previous World Cup meetings, had made an early breakthrough when Rohit Sharma misjudged the bounce of a Sohail Khan delivery and spooned the ball to Misbah for 15. There are celebrations everywhere, from social network sites to media and even common people, everyone is bust over cricket and India’s win. Long live Indian players, we are proud of you and also keep the same momentum to reach finals and then clinch the cup.
