AAP to spread wings in 4 states in next 5 years: Yogendra Yadav

Buoyed by its spectacular victory in Delhi Assembly polls, the Aam Aadmi Party is now planning to make itself a significant political force in at least four major states in the next five years without entering into any “arrangements of convenience” with any regional party.

Senior party strategist and ideologue Yogendra Yadav said in the long term, AAP wants to emerge as a principled force in national politics and the party was working on mid-term and long-term goals in this regard.

“We are not a regional party. In the long term we want to be a national alternative. That is why we chose Delhi consciously. We want to emerge as a principled force in national politics. In next 3-5 years, we want to become viable in more states than Delhi and Punjab,” said Yadav.

Terming coalitions like the Third Front as “arrangements of convenience”, he said AAP will not join any such groupings. He also ruled out having any understanding with parties like Trinamool Congress and JD(U) which had extended support to AAP in the Delhi polls.

“They have not sought political support and even we did not extend political support to them. It was merely a gesture on their part based on their own strengths and weaknesses. What they do not realise that we are anti-political establishment,” he said.

A noted political scientist, Yadav said the AAP’s target was to capture more than 20 per cent vote-share in each of the states where the party wants to become a viable alternative as part of its medium-term expansion drive.

He refused to name the states where AAP wants to spread wings when asked but said their selection will depend on space for potential opportunity and organisational strength.

On whether AAP would contest the Bihar assembly elections later this year and polls in West Bengal next year, he did not give a direct answer.

Punjab, where AAP had won four seats in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, will be a major focus area with the party deciding to fight the 2017 assembly polls in the state with full vigour.

Commenting on AAP’s sweeping victory in the Delhi polls,Yadav said the scale of the win has put enormous pressure on the Arvind Kejriwal-led government and exuded confidence of it living up to people’s expectations.

“The pressure is huge. Nothing is heavier than burden of people’s expectations. The challenge is to perform. However, if you manage to raise the living standards of people even by a little, they will be happy. There are big challenges in governance because Delhi is not a normal state. People also expect different standards of probity from us as we represent clean politics,” he said.

Yadav, who is also a psephologist, said since the Opposition was down to three seats, the AAP government should be even more “cautious” in listening to voices of Opposition both inside and outside the Assembly.

Contrary to Kejriwal’s views that party should not have contested in over 400 seats in the Lok Sabha polls, Yadav felt it helped AAP in spreading its organisation at the district level in most of the states.

Kejriwal, on many occasions, had said that it was a mistake to contest in so many constituencies.

Yadav strongly denounced attempts to tag AAP as leaning towards Leftist ideology and said when a new force arrives, the first temptation is to put into a “box of left to right”.

He said AAP represents all sections of the society and believes in coming out with practical solutions to various problems.

“There is an unmistakable element of class politics in what we have done. That is why probably people try to box us with Left,” he said.

JD(U), allies blame Guv, BJP for political crisis in Bihar

In a display of solidarity ahead of the trust vote lined up for February 20 for the Jitan Ram Manjhi government, JD(U) and its allies today came out together to slam Bihar Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi and the BJP for the political instability in the state.

“Bihar has been pushed into turmoil and political instability due to the long rope given by the governor at the behest of BJP to Chief Minister Manjhi to seek trust vote,” JD(U) state president Bashistha Narayan Singh said.

“An unprecedented state of fiscal anarchy prevails in Bihar with the chief minister announcing one populist measure after another which have grave financial implications for the treasury,” Singh said while blaming the governor for the unseemly political situation in the state.

Manjhi has been acting in an irresponsible manner by coming up with a slew of populist measures even though he knows that he will not be in power long enough to implement those schemes, Singh said while asking Tripathi to immediately direct the chief minister to stop announcing policy decisions for the time being until the trust vote was over.

With the governor having defended the February 20 deadline given to Manjhi for the trust vote and taking a dig at senior JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar for being ‘desperate’ for power, Singh charged that Tripathi was making political statements despite holding a constitutional office.

“Tripathi is speaking the language of Bihar BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi if one looks at the similarity of their views on the prevailing political situation… The governor should have refrained from making political statements given the high constitutional post that he holds,” Singh said.

RJD’s state unit president Ramchandra Purve flayed Manjhi for his defiance in not quitting his post after he was asked by the party to do so last week and charged that the governor was propping up his government in brazen disregard of the fact that the incumbent did not have the numbers.

Charging that Manjhi was pushing Bihar into “financial anarchy”, Purve told that the number of populist schemes his government had rolled out since it was reduced to a minority would put a burden of over Rs. 50,000 crore on the state’s treasury.

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal takes morning walk with wife, interacts with locals

A day after being sworn-in as the Delhi Chief Minister, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal was seen taking a walk along with his wife on early Sunday morning and meeting locals.

The Delhi CM was seen walking near his residence in Kaushambi in the morning.

Addressing some 100,000 cheering supporters at the Ramlila Maidan after being sworn in, Kejriwal, 46, also sought the status of a full state for Delhi, saying Prime Minister Narendra Modi had too many issues to take care of and Delhi must be left to Delhiites.

A few hours later, Kejriwal – sounding and looking unwell – drove to the Delhi Secretariat. He came to the venue after taking Crocin. In a first of its kind in the country, the AAP announced that Kejriwal will not hold any portfolio but only oversee the work of ministers and legislators.

The huge gathering went wild as Kejriwal took the oath of office from Lt Governor Najeeb Jung — followed by six ministers — and then spoke in Hindi. Besides Sisodia, the deputy chief minister, the other ministers are Satyendra Jain, Sandeep Kumar, Gopal Rai, Asim Ahmed Khan and Jitendra Singh Tomar.

Pak violates ceasefire again, opens fire at BSF post in J&K’s RS Pura sector

Pakistan resorted to fresh ceasefire violation on Sunday morning and opened fire at the RS Pura sector in Jammu district, targeting a Border Security Force (BSF) post on the International Border (IB), hours after they had fired two to three mortar shells in Nowapind border outpost area.

Once again violating the 2003 ceasefire between India and Pakistan on the Kashmir border, three rounds of small arms fire came from the Pakistani side at around 11:00 am today, triggering a gun battle, officials said.

Meanwhile, the BSF, whose 127 battalion was at the post, retaliated. However, no loss of life and property has been reported so far. The development comes amidst the high-voltage clash between India and Pakistan at Adelaide over World Cup cricket match 2015.

“The firing stopped immediately after the Rangers used small arms to target the BSF outpost,” an officer said.

Pakistan Rangers had last month targeted some BSF outposts in RS Pura sector hours after US President Barack Obama left India after attending the Republic Day celebrations.

Jammu and Kashmir Governor NN Vohra had however said that people in border villages should be provided adequate facilities because of the sustained ceasefire violations by Pakistan.

Vohra was speaking at the two-day conference of governors chaired by President Pranab Mukherjee in New Delhi.

He also stressed the need for giving high importance to the rapid development of border areas.

Stating that there can be no development without effective connectivity, the governor had said that Kashmir has very poor road network, which leads to unsatisfactory and costly transport.

Take steps to curb adulteration of milk

In our country, we should take care of cows, buffalos and goats for augmenting milk production and eliminating malnutrition. Children with weak liver cannot digest strong milk so goat milk should be given to them. Mahatma Gandhi in his later years consumed goat milk. With rampant urbanization, the upkeep of cows is becoming difficult day by day. After visiting Argentina, you will notice healthy cows grazing on lush greenery and compare this with the food consumed by our cows and buffalos. They have picked up the expertise of emptying out the plastic bags in the hope of finding some food in it.

When we were young, we could afford a “ kapila” cow and a “ murra bhains” who were fed green “ghas” and “ bhusa” and “ khali”. Scenario has changed today as urbanites dislike cows and shoo them away. In summer, these animals feel thirsty. However, some people have installed big earthen pots outside their buildings gate. They fill water in those pots which enable stray cows to quench their thirst. Some women and kids feed them with left over “rotis” and vegetable peelings but there is lack of green grass in the city. It is reported that 46 per cent of our youth in Mumbai are obese as they don’t drink milk, follow a sedentary lifestyle and relish junk food instead of having simple home cooked food.

We talk about mundane development which is necessary but at the same time progress of citizenry is vital too. The situation has become so bad that we cannot find a honest CBI Director. They have huge bungalows in Delhi. They should sleep by ten in the night and get up early to feed the cattle at home and perform some exercise which will improve their health. On the contrary, they meet shady people at night.

Mango and milk is the staple diet of most of the villagers during summer season. They don’t eat anything else. In Malihabad area ( Dashehri mangoes) they used to have mango parties followed by milk and one could see the branches of mango trees literally touching the ground. “Tukmi” mangoes were preferred over “ kalmi”. These days the orchards are sold much in advance and all mangoes are exported. The government must provide food at subsidized rates to citizens first before thinking about exporting it. Adulteration of milk sold in plastic bags is rampant in Mumbai. The government must take stringent measures to curb adulteration of milk. Many times, I try to purchase milk from a nearby lane and also try to change the brand but the shop keeper prevents me by saying, “Uncle who doosra hai”.

No country for free speech

Indian Constitution has bestowed its citizens with many rights and duties. Article 19 stands out as it gives the residents of this country the freedom of speech and expression; the right to assemble peacefully and without arms; to form associations or unions; to move freely throughout the territory of India; to reside and settle in any part of Indian party; and to practise any profession, or to carry on any occupation, trade or business. But freedom of speech and expression is the best and often the (most controversial) one among the people.

All of us are so free with our thoughts that we tell it straightforward to others or who so ever concerned. We will share/post images, put up statuses and DPs on various social networking sites, etc. However, our main intention is that we always want to express what’s up on our mind. Through this we are forever sending and receiving the information about each other’s lives. Also one gets to know the opinions on issues afflicting our society through various media platforms like radio, television, newspapers, electronic media, etc. The important thing is that we want our message to reach across the masses loud and clear.

Along with the rights, we are also under restrictions. Restrictions of Article 19 (a) as you know are: security of the state, friendly relations with foreign state, public order, decency and morality, contempt of court, defamation, incitement to an offence, and sovereignty and integrity of India. But Indians citizens take great pleasure in violating rules and laws. Adults like to do (as in experiment out) things they are NOT supposed to do. Since childhood all are curious to do everything and anything.

Whenever someone speaks or says anything there is always ‘motive’ or ‘intentions’ for doing so; very often people fail to identify/realise the intention and get judgmental about what is being said or written. Like just the recent case of AIB – Knockout, it is unfortunate that a gang of stand-up comedians were so badly condemned for the act/event. It was purely entertainment based show ‘Roast’- western concept which they tried to introduce received severe criticism from certain sections of the society. Politicians find these jokes offensive, but certainly what’s happening with the women in rural and urban India is condemnable. What an irony! There are many greater issues which need attention and action, not some random show (done for a good cause).

Yes, we are living in an independent country, where if you speak your heart and mind without giving a damn of the consequences, the subject concerned (if they are influential) will make sure that you are harassed or receive death threats, because they don’t want to be exposed and face the ire of the public and media. If things don’t change for the better in the near future, then very soon the true meaning of ‘freedom’ will cease.

Inspite of anti-superstition law Bengali babas’ are mushrooming in the city

Bangali-Baba-LeadOften commuters might have noticed posters of godman promising to resolve the problems faced by people in their personal lives, financial issues accompanied by a contact number. Even though the railways had imposed fine on offenders pasting posters but they continue to indulge in these acts. Posters make the compartments look untidy. Sometimes people make calls on the numbers mentioned in the advertisements and become victims of fraud. The intention of the fake godmen is only to make money through these advertisements. Many times, the advertisements are pasted over those ones which are paid by the clients. As a result of this, clients often refuse payment to railways thereby causing revenue losses to them.

The new anti-black magic law does have ‘a provision of imprisonment of up to seven years if anyone is found pasting such advertisements in trains and, thereby, propagating superstitious practices and witchcraft’ but often offenders go scot free. Even though more than one and half years have passed after Narendra Dabholkar’s murder but the state government has failed to implement the anti-black magic law effectively.

Often, the railway police find it hard to nab and prosecute the people who order sticking of illegal bills because of procedural and legal complexities. Most of the posters have phone numbers printed on them, but no address for correspondence.

“In the absence of the address, we cannot issue summons to these people, and build a case against them,” an RPF officer said.

Ashwin Shah a Borivali resident said, “I often notice the posters of godmen pasted inside the local train compartments. It often makes the interiors of the coach look filthy. Often the fake godmen cheat innocent people by accepting money from them promising to resolve the problem faced by them in their lives.”

Rita Khanvilkar a Malad resident said, “The railways must take stringent action against the accused responsible for pasting these advertisements which often mislead people.”

“Many godmen also rape, murder and loot their customers. Commuters must come together and file compliant with the railways if they notice misleading posters of godmen inside the compartments of suburban trains” she added.

The railways are forced to spend lakhs on cleap-up of defaced trains, to seek damages from arrested offenders. They, in fact, have asked their staff at car sheds to keep a record of the number of bills removed from trains and the cost of the exercise. The figures will be used in court against offenders.

Recently the Navghar Police have arrested a 26 year old godman for giving false promise to childless couple that his wishes would bless them with a baby. Police said the accused was previously arrested by Dombivali police station for the same modus operandi.

The accused identified as Majhar Shiddhik Sheikh, a resident of Dombivali was performing spiritual activities. The victim identified as Taslima Lakdawala is a resident of Sonal Park at Bhayander West. The accused Baba Sheikh had taken almost 3 lakhs rupees from the Lakdawala for performing a miracle.

Setalvad’s misuse of funds brings bad name to civil society

The Supreme Court stayed the arrest of civil rights’ activist Teesta Setalvad, her husband Javed Anand and three others in an alleged misappropriation case till February 19. Earlier, the Gujarat High Court had refused to grant anticipatory bail to them. The case pertains to a First Information Report (FIR) registered by the Ahmedabad Crime Branch last January, which alleged that Setalvad, Anand, former MP Ehsan Jafri’s son Tanvir and two office bearers of the society — Salimbhai Sandhi and Firoz Gulzar — had embezzled funds to the tune of Rs. 1.5 crore meant for the construction of a memorial for riot victims. The money which should have been used for the poor and the needy, probing in the matter suggests that the fund was misused for their personal comfort.

The facts of this case reflect the sorry state of affairs of the NGOs. Freedom to the civil society to function with flexibility is positive, however too much freedom can lead to misuse of the NGO’s fund by the individual or group. This type of scam gives bad name to civil society. It is therefore, very important to have strict laws regulating accountability and monitoring of the NGOs to maintain a trust level and ensure honest functioning of it. Nowadays, NGOs are referred to only those organisations that pursue wider social aims with political aspects, but they are not political organisations such as political parties.

India has 3.3 million NGOs; it means, one NGO per 400 citizens. It is time to create a Ministry for better monitoring of NGOs. Several people misuse NGO’s name to serve their personal and vested interests.

Twelve Gulbarg Society victims served notice to Setalvad and lodged a complaint against her at Ahmedabad Commissionrate, where commissioner asked the Crime Branch to inquire into the matter. The residents alleged that she had sought and collected huge donations from national and international bodies under the pretext of providing financial assistance for reconstruction of houses or converting the Gulbarg Society into a museum. The complainants said she collected a donation of Rs. 63 lakh for the Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP), of which she is secretary, and Rs. 88 lakh for Sabrang Trust; but nothing was passed on to the members.

Sixty-nine Muslims, including Zakia Jafri’s husband and former Congress MP Ahsan Jafri, were killed at the Gulbarg Society in Ahmedabad. Ms. Setalvad had helped Ms. Zakia to file a complaint against the then Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and 61 others for their alleged involvement in the post-Godhra riots. However, recently Ahmedabad court accepted the Special Investigation Team’s closure report and gave a clean chit to Modi and others. The Gulbarg Society victims have accused Setalvad and her husband Javed Anand of collecting foreign funds for riot victims but not using them.

Setalvad, who has been espousing the causes of the victims of the 2002 Gujarat riots, has contended that the case was filed against them with political motives and they had not misused any funds. On March 25, 2014, the session’s court had rejected their pre-arrest bail applications.

Setalvad is a civil rights activist and journalist. Her organisation, CJP, is a co petitioner seeking criminal trial of Narendra Modi, the then Chief Minister of Gujarat and the current Prime Minister of India and 62 other politicians and government officials for complicity in the Gujarat violence of 2002 and whose names did not figure in any of the FIRs /chargesheets that formed the subject matter of the various Session Trials regarding the riots at that point of time. Four of the accused since then were chargesheeted of whom Maya Kodnani and Babu Bajrangi have already been convicted.

In November 2010, Setalvad was accused of pressuring Zaheera Sheikh, the key witness in the Best Bakery case, to make certain statements, leading to the unprecedented transfer of the case outside Gujarat. In August 2005, a Supreme Court of India committee absolved her of the charges of inducement levelled against her by Zaheera and awarded a one year jail sentence to Zaheera for perjury. In 2013, Tehelka in an undercover investigation discovered that Zaheera had been paid to alter her testimony. Tehelka recorded BJP member Madhu Srivastava, described by Tehelka as a “close associate of Narendra Modi” and Batthoo Srivastava describing how they had paid Rs. 1.8 million to Zaheera.

Gulbarg Society members also sought to ban her organisation “Citizens for Justice and Peace” and prevent her and husband entering the society. The Ahmedabad Crime Branch is conducting an inquiry into the matter.

ISIS to be banned in India

ISIS (5)The dreaded terror group ISIS and all its affiliate organisations will be banned by India under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act soon.

A notification declaring ISIS and its affiliates ISIL and IS as proscribed organisations will be issued very soon, official sources said.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh had said in Parliament on December 16, 2014 that the Middle-East group had been declared ban in India under a United Nations Schedule.

Singh had said the group has been proscribed under the provisions related to organisations listed in the Schedule to the U N Prevention and Suppression of Terrorism (Implementation of Security Council Resolutions) Order, 2007 made under section two of the United Nations (Security Council) Act, 1947. Four Mumbai youth had gone to Iraq-Syria in May 2014 to join ISIS.

One of them returned late last year while the whereabouts of the remaining three are yet to be known.

A Bangalore-based executive of a multi-national company was arrested in December last year for allegedly running a pro-ISIS twitter handle.

Last month, another person from Hyderabad was barred from travelling to Syria, ostensibly to join ISIS.

Recently, retired Intelligence Bureau chief Asif Ibrahim had said there was an imminent danger of Indian youths moving to the conflict zone (Iraq-Syria), emerging as a role model, and such developments may directly or indirectly pose a threat to the country.

“The threat potential is accentuated with some lower rung elements returning from conflict zone,” he had said.

Every hero of politics should tread with caution: Shiv Sena

UdhdhavIn a veiled attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi after BJP’s rout in Delhi Assembly polls, Shiv Sena on Friday said a “hero of politics” should not be under the misconception of having unstinted support of the people.

“It is impossible to say whose wave will sweep away whom in the future. Every hero of politics should tread with caution. The people of this country are supreme. One should not think that one has an unstinted support of people,” an editorial in Sena mouthpiece ‘Saamana’ said.

“Having an excessive pride of simplicity and honesty is also not right. (Arvind) Kejriwal’s brand is his muffler. But he should not have any problem in keeping the muffler away when it has no use,” it further said.

“According to reports, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had worn a branded Rs 30-35 lakh suit when (US President Barack) Obama had come to India. Kejriwal should make sure his muffler too does not become branded like the suit,” the Sena said.

A day after the BJP was decimated in the Delhi Assembly elections; the Sena had torn into its ally saying that the “broom wielding” AAP had reduced the BJP to “dirt” in the election and virtually demanded that Modi accept the blame for it.

“The entire election campaign was run in the name of Modi. Anna Hazare said this is Modi’s defeat. We too feel the same. The way the party attributed its success in other states to Modi, they should do the same for Delhi,” it had said.
