Constable withdraws his statement in Salman Khan hit-and-run case

Sakman-KhanIn his deposition before the sessions court which is conducting the trial of the 2002 hit-and-run case allegedly involving Bollywood superstar Salman Khan, a police constable contradicted his own statement recorded before the magistrate.

“I had taken two bottles of blood sample of the accused (Khan) in an envelope to the forensic lab,” the constable said during a cross-examination by defence lawyer Srikant Shivade.

The witness had said earlier, when examined by the Special Public Prosecutor Pradeep Gharat, that he had taken the blood sample from Bandra police station to the lab.

However, during the cross-examination, he denied that he had carried the blood vials in an iron container; he said he carried them in an envelope. He also denied having told the Magistrate that the packet of blood sample had been sealed.

“I have not told this to the Magistrate (about iron container or sealed packet) and cannot say why he recorded it,” the witness added.

The constable said he took the samples to the lab on September 30, 2002, two days after the mishap in which the actor’s car had rammed into a bakery in suburban Bandra, killing one person and injuring four others sleeping outside.

At the next hearing, on February 16, a sub-inspector of police, who had accompanied Salman to J J Hospital for the blood test after the mishap, would be examined.

The trial is being conducted on day-to-day basis. More than 20 witnesses have already been examined and a few more are left. The judge has asked the prosecution to wrap up the examinations as speedily as possible.

Sena minister keeps up attack on Eknath Khadse

Stepping up his attack on senior BJP leader and Maharashtra Revenue Minister Eknath Khadse, Shiv Sena legislator and minister of state for the department Sanjay Rathod claimed he had been stripped of all his quasi-judicial powers.

“Khadse says the job of allocation of gift land to temples and tribals will not be given to me because anti-corruption bureau is probing some decisions of the previous minister. Then why has he kept the powers with himself? Instead he should have passed them on to the principal secretary,” said Rathod, a three-time legislator from Digras in Yavatmal district.

Rathod said he was a legislator and had a big following. “Will I do anything wrong which will harm my image among my electorate? Why should Khadse doubt my credentials? I am not asking for the cases which are being probed by the ACB,” he said.

As a junior minister he had no powers except technical and administrative approvals, the Sena leader said.

“Files related to these approvals number about 25 to 30 a year. I am not interested in moving around in red-beacon car without any powers. I have told Uddhavji (Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray) that I will not be able to function in this way,” Rathod said, but denied that he had handed his resignation to Thackeray.

“If ACB is probing the temple land allocation, why has Khadse taken up the issue? How many files regarding permissions for allocation of land to tribals he has cleared if the matter is subjudice?” he said.

As a minister of state, Rathod claimed, he had not signed a single file regarding any hearing, and Khadse had scrapped decisions of all the hearings he had conducted.

Chargesheet filed in case related to plot against Bhatts

The Mumbai police filed a charge sheet against 11 persons, allegedly members of Ravi Pujari gang, who were arrested in connection with a plot to attack the Bollywwod director-producer Mahesh Bhatt and his brother and producer Mukesh Bhatt.

“We have filed an 1,102-page charge sheet in the special Maharashtra Control Of Organised Crime Act court,” said a crime branch official.

Police had arrested the accused on November 15 and 21 last year and claimed they had foiled a plot to kill the Bhatt brothers. The accused were also involved in the firing outside the house of Karim Morani, producer of ‘Chennai Express’, the police said.

Governor joins I Love Cleanliness campaign

Maharashtra Governor C.V. Rao Friday joined the ‘I Love Cleanliness’ campaign initiated by around 500 volunteers of the Dawoodi Bohra community in the city, an official said.

The project was launched four years ago by the community by the late spiritual head, Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin, who passed away last year, under the auspices of Burhani Foundation-India (BFI) and Nazaafat, an NGO.

“It now supports the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan and will be taken up over 500 cities, towns and villages across the country by the Dawoodi Bohra community members on Feb14,” said trustee Taikhoom Mohyiuddin of BFI.

He explained that to accomplish a high percentage of long-term success, a holistic approach has been adopted in the cleanliness drive, including community health and hygiene, sold waste management, fogging and neighbourhood beautification.

Prior to launching the cleanliness campaign, Governor Rao paid floral tributes at Raudat Tahera, the twin mausoleum of the late 51st Syedna Taher Saifuddin and his son 52nd Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin at Bhendi Bazaar.

Later a team of professionals, women, students and volunteer organisations besides government officials joined Rao in the cleanliness drive in south Mumbai localities.

Kin of road accident victim get Rs. 30.25 lakh compensation

The Motor Accident Claims Tribunal here has awarded Rs. 30.25 lakh compensation to the widow and children of a construction firm’s managing director who died in a road accident in 2009.

Vashi-based ESSDEE Foundations and Constructions Pvt Ltd, where the deceased Shekar Shetty (60) worked as MD, and the National Insurance Company were jointly and severally liable to pay Rs. 30.25 lakh to the claimants, MACT Chairman and Principal District Judge R R Gandhi observed in a recent order.

On October 26, 2009, Shetty, who lived in Navi Mumbai’s Vashi area, was going to Kolhapur in a company vehicle when its driver lost control over the wheels near Satara. As a result, the car overturned.

Shetty sustained serious injuries in the accident and died the next day at a hospital in Karad, claimants’ advocate SS Shetty told the tribunal.

The deceased’s wife Yashodha (53), daughter Supreet (19) and son Sumeet (17) later filed a claim against the construction firm and the insurance company.

The claimants told the tribunal that the accident took place as the vehicle was driven in a rash and negligent manner by the driver and therefore, the company and the insurer were liable to pay the compensation.

Shetty was the MD of the company and earned Rs. 8 lakh per annum. Due to his sudden death, they were deprived of the source of income, maintenance, support and services, the claimants informed the tribunal.

Relying on earlier rulings in similar cases, the MACT ordered the company and the insurance firm to pay the compensation to the family of the deceased.

Devendra Fadnavis hints at lower power tariffs for industries

To attract investments, Maharashtra government is developing a blueprint to rationalise power tariff for industrial consumers as rates for them are “significantly high”, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said.

Currently, out of the over 2.20 crore consumers of the state utility Mahavitaran, 1.99 per cent or about 4.38 lakh are industrial customers with consumption of 31,352.44 million units. Mahavitaran charges them Rs. 8 – 8.50 per unit.

“Currently, the tariffs for industrial consumers are significantly high. If we have to attract industries to the state, we will have to develop a mechanism to rationalise these tariffs,” Fadnavis said after a meeting.

“Despite being a smaller ratio among the total customers on our network, they are the largest consumers in terms of consumption. We will have to rationalise the tariffs keeping in mind that it has a customer base of 1.5 crore who consume less than 100 units and the burden cannot be passed on to industries alone,” he said.

The state provides subsidy to Mahavitaran which in-turn subsidises its low-end consumers, including farmers, who form a large part of its customer base.

Currently, Mahavitaran has 1.62 crore residential and 36.67 lakh agricultural consumers, among others.

Asked about the quantum of tariff reduction that the government is proposing for industrial consumers, the Chief Minister said, “We cannot take a decision on how much it should be. We are preparing a road-map to rationalise the power tariffs. We will soon go to the electricity regulator MERC with this proposal. But our intention is to reduce the tariffs to an extent where we will not have to subsidise Mahavitaran nor force it to pass on the burden to the low-end consumers.”

Fadnavis also said he is in talks with the Coal Ministry to ensure adequate supply of coal for power projects in the state.

“Currently, we get 20 lakh tonnes of coal from various sources. But our demand is going to increase in the days to come. We have requested the Coal Ministry to ensure that we get more fuel as we are setting up new projects. Besides, we have also requested them to evaluate the feasibility of setting up power projects at pit-heads which will result in reduction in transportation cost and in-turn the overall generation cost,” he said, adding, “we want to increase our efficiency in generation and distribution.”

Judgement on Salem in builder murder case reserved till February 16

A special TADA court reserved its judgement till Monday in the 1995 murder case of city-based builder Pradeep Jain in which deported gangster Abu Salem is the main accused.

“The court is likely to pronounce its verdict on February 16,” said Ujjwal Nikam, Special Public Prosecutor.

Also, this will be the first judgement in a case involving Salem in India after he was deported in 2005, he said.

According to police, on March 7, 1995, Jain was shot dead by assailants outside his Juhu bungalow after he allegedly refused to part with his huge property to Salem.

Salem, another builder Virendra Jhamb and Mehndi Hassan are facing the trial in the case. While accused Naeem Khan turned approver, another accused Riyaz Siddiqui, who had also become approve, later turned hostile in the court.

Trial of Siddiqui was later separated. Since the trial began in 2008, the prosecution has so far examined around 25 witnesses in the case while defense examined one witness.

The court, in January last year, had dropped some sections against Salem in the case after the prosecution sought for the same saying that some charges need to be withdrawn in order to maintain cordial relations between two sovereign countries – India and Portugal.

Salem, an accused in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts, was extradited from Portugal on November 11, 2005, after a prolonged legal battle.

The Supreme Court of Portugal, in 2012, had dismissed an appeal of the CBI which had challenged termination of his extradition. He has also moved Supreme Court of Portugal seeking directions to the Indian government to execute its order of cancelling his extradition.

In June 2012, Salem was shot at in Taloja Central jail in Navi Mumbai allegedly by gangster Devendra Jagtap alias JD, an accused in the murder case of advocate Shahid Azmi who had represented a 26/11 Mumbai attack accused.

‘Today’s theatre artists lack originality’

Sandip-SoparrkarSandip Soparrkar is a trained and qualified Ballroom Dance Teacher and Choreographer. He is the first from India to be certified by the ‘Ballroom Dance Teachers Training School’ in Bonn, Germany. Mr Soparrkar was honoured with the National Achievement Award in the field of choreography and dance in New Delhi last year. Sandip was appointed as official judge for several television reality shows. The choreographer is also qualified to teach all Latin American and Standard Ballroom Dances up to championship level. In an interview with our Group Editor Vaidehi Sachin, Sandip Soparrkar speaks about the love ballet presented by him in Indo-Korean style depicting the love story of an Indian princess and a Korean prince through their dance performance.

Can you elaborate about your recent dance musical?
Well, this musical was especially made for the launch of Posco a Korean steel plant which was inaugurated by the Prime Minister of Korea recently. Many people were aware about this musical performance which I was working on. People requested me to organise it for public and I am pleased to present it.

What was the objective behind presenting this Indo-Korean love story?
The motive was to show that the love between the two beautiful countries is not new and is existing for more than 3000 years. Some relations are built long before we even realise.

Are you a part of Korean cultural centre?
No. I am not but would love to display it to the Korean cultural centre.

How did the concept of an Indo-Korean love story come to your mind?
I remember visiting the tomb of King Kim Suro and Indian Princess Sriratna in Korea few years back when I visited the country while choreographing a Bollywood film. The visit made a great impact in my mind. When an offer came to show the attraction between the two countries, I could think of nothing else but this sensational love story.

Jesse Randhawa and you presented the royal era of 78 AD India in your Indo-Korean dance musical show. Who assisted you for conducting research, selecting costumes and to choreograph for that era?
I am pleased to say that it took me five months to conduct this research work. I had read several books on this topic and interacted with few historians which enabled me to develop the story. The script was written by me. After the conclusion of research work, Dilip and Pooja Surana helped me get the music in order. I had to source the Korean music from Korea. It’s been a wonderful experience putting all aspects together. For choreography and costumes too we had to conduct research as the costumes have evolved with changing times so has the dance. However, in this case, technology had eased our woes.

Varsha Usgaonkar was very innovative and outstanding in her character in enchanted love. How did she join the group and whose idea was it to make her part of this musical?
All of us are aware that Varsha is a great dancer. She has been learning dance with me for more than two years now. When I was thinking of who should be the narrator of this unique love story, I thought about several people and auditioned many of them. Then I zeroed in on Varsha and after auditioning her I did not have to rethink. She possesses looks, grace, acting and dancing talent.

Do you agree that Varsha was the show stopper in the entire musical? Her appearance had added charm to the show.
I totally agree she was the attraction of the show. As a narrator, one has a very significant role to play. You take the audience with you into each scene.

Why is the audience for theatre and musicals diminishing in India these days?
I thinking the theatre audience is dwindling as theatre artists lack originality. We copy Broadway musicals and never think about innovative ideas. Sponsors too shy away from investing and don’t come forward to experiment. This was my 6th musical and it was an original concept.

What is your message for dance lovers?
Please read and dig into history and mythology. It has plenty to offer and we can learn many things. It will keep us grounded too. Don’t copy what you see. Think from year heart. A dancer is one who loves being in love with dance.

I would like to mention that this musical brought forward four questions in my mind which I left for the audience to think.

A-  If we are what we are today because of our history then why we don’t promote inter-caste community wedding even today? Sriratna married a man belonging to different culture and religion.

B- How many children like Sriratna can talk to their parents freely about their feelings?

C-  How many parents listen to their children and allow them to follow their heart and marry someone of their choice?

D-How many Kim Suros are there who marry for love without looking at their partner’s background and financial status?

I believe our history and traditions have taught several things in a very subtle way. We have to view it in the correct light.

Children have to bear the brunt of divorce-Part II

A child ends up listening to his mother’s side of tale while she has a conversation with her friend. The mother speaks about her bad marriage, how her ex-husband ill-treated her, why she decided to leave him. She also talks about his financial problems and the hardships she had to undergo to as a single mother to raise her child. When someone inquires with the woman about how her child is coping up with the situation, we here these words which many of us might have heard before “Mere bacche ne uski ankho se dekha uska baap ne kaise apni maa ko rakha tha. Uski maa ne kitna sahan kiya hai sirf uske bacche ke liye, woh mera baccha hai”

Though mothers may be right as they have suffered immensely but what I want to say is a mother is talking about the turmoil undergone by her. The child has been witness to it so he is aware that his father was a cruel person. On the other hand, the child has never received an opportunity to bond with his father to know that they don’t misbehave with their children. Even a father too cares for his children like their mother does. The relationship is strained between parents but children have to suffer the most.

Children’s emotions are forgotten and it’s not their parent’s mistake as they had to worry about many aspects. According to me, it is also necessary to know about the child’s opinion about his estranged parent. Once a child grows up, his curiosity to meet their other parent also increases because they are aware about life. He also wants to know the reason behind his parent’s separation. However, it does not mean that he is disrespecting that parent who took care of him. In such cases most of the time relatives end up making stupid statements to the child’s parent like

“tujhe pehele hi bola tha bacche ko baap ke pass chodde, aise din nahi dekhne padte”

“Maine tere liye itna kiya, tujhe itna pyaar kiya, tujhe sab kuch diya, tho bhi tu apne baap kyu milne gaya tha?”

During such circumstances, parents once again fail to understand their child. She will not allow her child to visit her husband who had created troubles for her as she is not wrong. On the other hand, relatives also play vital roles. If relatives or friends don’t act smartly in such situation then it will only create further troubles for the mother and child. Many times relatives try to aggravate the problem.

Finally, I want to say that let that child be allowed to meet his estranged parent. Let the child understand the true character of his parents. He should be allowed to live his own life sans regrets in a simple manner.

PM Modi summons Delhi police chief, orders strict action in convent school vandalism

summons-Delhi-police-chiefPrime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday summoned Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi after a “theft” at a convent school in south Delhi.

Expressing “deep concern and anguish” over the rising crime rate in the capital, the PM directed Bassi to come down hard on those involved in such attacks.

The Prime Minister further asked the Police Commissioner to speedily investigate the recent incidents of vandalism and ensure that the guilty are brought to book.

Modi also spoke over telephone to Union Home Secretary LC Goyal and asked him to “pay special attention to the rising incidents of crime, and vandalism, and to work towards ensuring the safety and security of women in the capital,” an official release said.

The PM summoned Bassi hours after Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani, an alumnus of the institution, visited the Holy Child Auxilium School in south Delhi’s Vasant Vihar and urged Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh to look into the matter.

Delhi Chief Minister-designate Arvind Kejriwal has also condemned the attack.

Talking to reporters, Bassi said: “The Prime Minister told me to take strict action against the perpetrators of such attacks.”

Unidentified persons had allegedly vandalised the school in South Delhi’s Vasant Vihar in the wee hours even as police and school authorities claimed it to be a case of robbery.

Police said the office of the school principal was vandalised and wires of CCTV were cut. After the incident, the school was shut down this morning.
“We are investigating and have registered a case in this regard,” said a senior official.

This is the sixth incident in three months on Christian establishments in the national capital.

Police, however, claimed that it was a case of robbery as a donation box was missing. “The school’s donation box which is at a distance from the church has been robbed. It is an incident of robbery and we suspect that it is an insider’s job who knew where the cameras were installed.”

“It is not a case of desecration, as per our preliminary investigation,” said Bassi.

School authorities also claimed it to be a case of robbery.

“When the maid came to open the school, administrative office and principal’s office were open. We found that six CCTVs were damaged and the principal’s office was found ransacked, all cupboards were ransacked and all papers were thrown away. Around Rs 12,000 cash is also missing,” Sister Lucy, school’s principal, said.

She also said that the cameras inside the corridor were destroyed but the cameras outside are intact and the police are investigating.

However, Father Dominic Emanuel, spokesperson of the Delhi Catholic Archdiocese, said that this is sixth such attack on a christian institution.

“In the morning, the CCTVs were found destroyed and principal’s office ransacked. Some money is also missing but am not sure about the amount. We are very surprised that this is sixth such attack on a christian institution. Why are our religious places and institutions being attacked,” he said.

However, Bassi said of the six incidents reported, four have been solved and it was found that attacks were not connected with each other.

Bassi also said that the police is serious in investigating the cases which have occurred so far and efforts are on to ensure such incidents are not repeated.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi had called me at his office and expressed his great worry on the incident pertaining to Holy Child school. He enquired about the details of various incidents which have occurred in recent months,” he said.
