Amit Shah is an overrated leader

When I had listened to the speeches of BJP President Amit Shah before Lok Sabha elections, I thought he was an amicable leader but when he began inducting all sort of people in BJP, his down ward slide has started. Prior to the general election, the people were fed up with a mute Prime minister and a juvenile sounding Rahul Gandhi. Later Modi attracted voters by making various promises as they became impressed with his speech paving way for BJP’s victory in Uttar Pradesh. Amit Shah was instantly projected as a larger than life leader in the party. He also walked away with all credit for the saffron party’s good performance in Lok Sabha polls. Shah could not handle Shiv Sena properly hence we are witnessing lot of bickering between both coalition partners these days.

People must ask, is Prime Minister Narendra Modi only interested in delivering election speeches, why can’t he impose strictness among his party cadres? Why can’t he come to Mumbai and take action against warring party workers? For Delhi elections he is saying, “Woh mujhse darenge aur accha kaam karenge”, then Sir! Why the Shiv Sena is not afraid of you? They know that you are obsessed with power seeker like them. Your moral mask has fallen off. You had promised to take action against Sakshi Maharaj but he is teaching you how to row the boat.

BJP had an excellent opportunity to undertake corruption free development work but Modi started indulging in show off activities and Amit Shah started gloating over as if he was some Chanakya. Modi is spoiling the work culture. He is closing his eyes to religious fanaticism. Few days back, I had said that Modi is a narcissist and a prominent English too has mentioned the same about him. The time has come for public to vote against BJP in Delhi to make them learn a lesson and improve their performance, otherwise, Modi will ride a horse as a “ chakravarti raja”.

Maharashtra government should discourage the construction of floating hotels at Chowpatty and Ferry Wharf. What is the technical advancement in such a move? If you build a floating dock and repair ships in India, it can be termed as technical advancement and will promote skill development.

Floating hotels will promote tummy development and wastage of money by the youngsters. Will their health improve? Will they become more proficient in various achievable skills? No. They will only consume more soft drinks and get diabetic at an early age. I advocated for the construction of Marina like the one which exists in Singapore. It is clean, beautiful and beneficial for citizens health too. MbPT should be ashamed of trying to make money by non-technical means, there is no technical excellence in it. This is time for Arvind Kejriwal to sing, “Reshmi salwar kurta jali ka, roop saha nahin jaye nakhrewali ka…”.

Sena scared of AMIM?

Sena-scared-of-AMIMThe rise of All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen (AIMIM) is giving sleepless nights to parties like Shiv Sena, Congress and NCP. The AIMIM had surprised many mainstream political parties by winning 2 seats in Maharashtra. Shiv Sena had even demanded a ban to be imposed on AIMIM across the state for promoting anti-national activities. Sena’s mouthpiece Saamna had criticised Owaisi brothers for indulging in anti-Hindu propaganda to poison the minds of Muslims. Sena supremo Uddhav Thackeray had appealed to BJP to join hands to strengthen the Hindutva forces to check the rise of anti-national forces. Is Shiv Sena worried about AIMIM’s rise in the state?

MIM has been winning the Hyderabad Lok Sabha seat for the last 30 years but now the party has made its debut in the state. After party president Asaduddin Owaisi’s frequent visits to Aurangabad and surrounding areas, his younger brother and AIMIM floor leader in State Assembly Akbaruddin Owaisi had visited places like Parbhani, Mumbra and Mumbai.

Both the brothers, who have strengthened their image of aggressive champions of minorities cause, received encouraging response from the masses in all the places they visited. The Muslim community is already disappointed with mainstream parties like Congress, NCP and Samajwadi for only considering them as vote bank and failing to fulfil the promises made by them. Therefore they are considering AIMIM as an alternative which has already stated that it will work for the interests of the community.

AIMIM has significantly eaten into the traditional Muslim support base of parties like the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party. Both these parties used to garner Muslim votes till now.

The AIMIM, which is looking to expand beyond its Hyderabad citadel, has eyed on Maharashtra, which has a significant Muslim population, and north-eastern Karnataka, which was formerly part of Hyderabad state.

It is also planning to expand in Uttar Pradesh, which has close to 3 crore Muslim population. The party will soon open its office in Lucknow and is planning to enter into UP in a big way.

Anjum Inamdar, one of the organisers said, “While denying permission to hold the rally at Golibar Maidan, police told us that they would consider permitting the gathering if it took place at a closed-door venue. As per their suggestion, we chose a hall in Kausar Baug. Apart from this, there is no other change in the schedule.”

When AV tried to contact AIMIM’s MLAs’ Imitiaz Jalil, MLA from Aurangabad Central, and Waris Pathan, (Byculla), they remained unavailable for comment.

Shiv Sena workers staged a noisy protest outside the venue where AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi was to address a gathering on the issue of reservation for Muslims. Sena workers began thronging the Kauser Baug in Kondhwa, where police allowed the gathering with several riders, including one that the crowd should not exceed 2000 people, as specified in the application for the meeting.

The Sena said that they back the idea of reservation for Muslims on the basis of financial status, but not only on the basis of religion.

“We support the idea of Muslims getting reservation on the basis of their financial status, but not on the basis of their caste. The late Sena Chief (Bal Thackeray) had said that religion should not be mixed with the need to get essential commodities. This is why Owaisi, on the pretext of talking about reservations (for Muslims) does not need to fulfill his agenda,” the Sena said.

Court sends Iqbal Kaskar to police custody till February 6

Iqbal-KaskarA Mumbai Court on Wednesday sent Dawood Ibrahim’s brother Iqbal Kaskar to police custody till February 6, 2015.

Kaskar was on Tuesday arrested in assault and extortion case in Mumbai.

His two associates were also booked on charges of extortion and assault following a complaint by an estate agent, police said today.

An FIR was registered last night at Byculla police station after a complaint by Salim Shaikh, an estate agent that Kaskar and his men had demanded Rs. three lakh after thrashing him last Friday, police said.

The alleged incident occurred in a room at Damarwala building at Pakmodia Street in South Mumbai’s Bhendi Bazar area, police added.

The case was subsequently transferred to J J Marg police station as the place where the alleged extortion took place falls in its jurisdiction.

“Kaskar and two others were booked under IPC sections 385 (Putting person in fear of injury in order to commit extortion), 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) and 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention),” said Anil Madvi, senior inspector at J J Marg police station.

The 48-year-old victim, who is a resident of Byculla, first approached the local police station where the FIR was registered and then the matter was transferred to J J Marg police.

Kaskar had been deported to India from the United Arab Emirates in 2003. Dawood’s fifth sibling was wanted in a murder case and his alleged role in the controversial Sara Sahara case where a building came up illegally on government land but a court acquitted him in both the cases.

AIB pulls out the controversial video

AIBThe members of expletive-laced comedy show ‘AIB Roast’ have removed their latest three part video from Youtube after it sparked a controversy for obscene language and content.

AIB has tweeted saying, “Have taken down AIB Knockout for now. We will speak soon.”

The celebrity roast, which is first of its kind in India, featured a panelist of eight AIB members with filmmaker Karan Johar taking over the role of ‘roast master’ to grill ‘Gunday’ stars Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor on their professional and personal lives.

The show, which is being probed by the Maharashtra Government, ran into trouble when several organisations filed FIR against the alleged obscene nature of the content along with censor board member Ashoke Pandit coming out heavily against it. “They can’t use the language in public that is not decent in any form. The entire show was abnormal,” Mr. Pandit had said.

Mr. Pandit, however, was slammed by Twitter community for his derogatory comments against Karan Johar.

The online community seems divided over the issue as three hashtags have been trending on twitter.

The AIB roast event, staged in Mumbai in December, was attended by 4,000 people and the audience included Johar’s mother, Sonakshi Sinha, Alia Bhatt and Deepika Padukone among others.

Music director Ismail Darbar arrested in assault case, granted bail

Ismail-Darbar-arrestedNational Award winning music composer Ismail Darbar was arrested in an assault case filed by an assistant director, a day after his son and two others were held in the same matter.

Darbar, a well-known name in Bollywood, was taken into custody from his residence in suburban Oshiwara and later produced before a court which granted him bail, said S R Dhanedhar, Assistant Commissioner of Police (D N Nagar Division).

Yesterday, the 50-year-old music composer’s son Zaid (21), his friends Nishant Singh (21) and Mohsin Khan (29) were arrested and later granted bail.

The arrests were fallout of a complaint lodged yesterday by Assistant Director Prashant Choudhary, who is involved in a payment dispute with Darbar.

The alleged assault on Choudhary took place at about 11 pm on Monday in the parking lot of a building in suburban Andheri where the Assistant Director and the Darbars stay.

In his complaint, Choudhary (29) alleged Darbar had been repeatedly evading him after he sought his pending dues related to a project he did for the composer.

Choudhary worked with Darbar’s production house for three months from July last year before quitting due to health issues. He then went to his native place in Assam and returned to Mumbai last month.

Choudhary met Darbar, Zaid and his two friends in the parking lot on Monday night and broached the payment issue.

Soon an argument broke out and took an ugly turn when Zaid and his two friends (Singh and Khan) thrashed the assistant director with hockey sticks and also punched and kicked him. The victim claimed Darbar, too, assaulted him, police said.

He approached police following which an FIR was filed against the four under IPC Sections related to voluntarily causing hurt and criminal intimidation, among others.

Darbar shot into fame for his music in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s blockbuster “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam”. The 1999 film fetched him National Film Award for Best Music Direction.

Since then he has given music in several films.

Maharashtra government mulls revival of ‘blood-on-call’ scheme

Maharashtra Government is planning to revamp the ‘Jeevan Amrut Yojana’ (blood-on-call) scheme which is aimed at facilitating blood supply to patients scheduled to undergo surgeries and medical procedures in remote areas.

The Yojana was launched last year, under which the patients have to pay Rs. 450 towards the cost of blood and Rs. 50 to Rs. 100 as transportation cost depending on the distance, and request (for blood) is placed by the hospital concerned.

Upon receiving the call, the required blood and blood components will be transported on motorcycle to hospitals and nursing homes, in the specially fitted cold storage boxes.

The ambitious plan was said to be first-of-its-kind in the country.

State Health Minister Deepak Sawant said the response for the scheme has not been on lines of government’s expectations and now they intend to strengthen the network of blood storage units in rural areas.

“Instead of transporting blood through motorcycles, we intend to strengthen network of blood storage units in rural areas. Accordingly, there should be one unit in the periphery of four primary health care centres. This would be more feasible,” he added.

The minister said the 108 ambulance service scheme, launched by the previous government is also being reviewed.

The ambulance service was to facilitate transport of a patient to the nearest hospital within the first ‘golden’ hour of an emergency or a road accident, by dialing 108.

Sawant said there are 937 ambulances under the Scheme, which has worked well.

“However, we plan to ensure its utilisation in areas where it is needed,” he said.

Sawant said his department has taken up the initiative of tracking pregnant women in tribal areas to ensure institutional deliveries in order to arrest maternal mortality deaths.

“Women will be counselled for safe deliveries. Last year in Amravati region, 300 pregnant women died,” he said.

Maharashtra government to scrap decision on commercial use of MSRTC land

The BJP-led Maharashtra government has decided to scrap the previous government’s decision on commercial usage of land owned by Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC).

Transport Minister Diwakar Raote said the buses operated by MSRTC are the lifeline of rural Maharashtra. The MSRTC has bus stands and depots in each taluka and district, he said.

The previous Congress-NCP government had decided to implement a commercial complex project with an objective of commercialising usage of land which is under MSRTC’s custody, modernisation of ST bus depots, better food and beverage facilities for commuters and raising earnings from buses.

The project was being developed on Build Operate Transfer (BOT) basis to facilitate commuters to shop and eat near the bus stops.

The developer, which was to be given land on rental basis for 30 years, was to ensure complete makeover of the present bus stands. Raote, however, said that not an inch of the MSRTC land would be sold.

The MSRTC canteens would be given to women’s self help groups to operate them, he said.

The minister also said he has sought an expert opinion on fixing “shock absorbers” to the last seats of the ST buses.

“I have received many complaints about the hardships faced due to the seats. So I have sought views from technical experts in this regard,” he informed.

“The tyres (for the buses) are purchased in wholesale which needs to be stopped. Purchases should be done as per need. Microchips would be fitted in the tyres so that the number of kilometres travelled can be known. Similarly, the posts of mechanics will be filled urgently,” he said on the issue of accidents and breakdown of buses.

The village gram panchayats seeking bus services which require a night halt should provide a shade for the bus and also arrange for food for the MSRTC staff, he said.

“The gram panchayat would be reimbursed accordingly,” Raote added.

‘Common Man’ R.K. Laxman wished he could join the army

Late cartoonist R.K. Laxman, nicknamed ‘common man’ for his illustrations of issues faced by common men, wanted to be part of the Indian Army, reveals a visitor’s diary of an army school.

The legendry cartoonist had visited the artillery school in Maharashtra’s Deolali, evident by its visitor’s diary, where he drew a cartoon. The cartoon depicting his signature Common Man with checked jacket, dhoti, Gandhi glasses and a number of hairs on almost bald head expressed his desire to join the army.

The words on the cartoon read, “I wish I had joined the Army. It is so nice here.” The visitor’s diary marks the date of his visit as June 10, 1998.

He defied politicians, leaving them read faced with his cartoons, exposing the hypocrisy and corruption rooted in politics.

Rasipuram Krishnaswamy Laxman was a son of the school teacher and younger brother of eminent novelist R.K. Narayan.

The artist who presented the problems of the common men in a most peculiar way drew his last breath on January 26 this year. He was aged 93 at the time of his death.

Give respect to leaders with mass base: Narayan Rane writes to Rahul Gandhi

Senior Congress leader from Maharashtra Narayan Rane has called for introspection in the party along with organisational reforms, and urged the party vice president Rahul Gandhi to give “due preference and respect” to leaders and workers who have mass base.

In a letter to Gandhi, Rane also stressed the need to use the social media aggressively to expose the NDA government.

“An action plan should be prepared to revive the party and bring drastic changes in the organisation. Credibility, loyalty and mass base should be the criteria to make organisational as well as government appointments,” Rane said, adding that he was writing in view of the present political situation in the state where Congress was routed in both Lok Sabha and Assembly polls.

“Leaders and party workers with mass base should be given due preference in appointments and treated with due respect,” Rane said.

“If an appointed person is not delivering the public good that person must be replaced immediately. Leaders and workers trying to achieve personal goals must not be appointed to important posts,” said the former Maharashtra minister, who had made no secret of his Chief Ministerial ambition when Congress and NCP were in power.

“We must regain confidence of the people in urban and rural areas. We must concentrate on farmers, working classes and youth and work hard for them. We must highlight the failures of Modi government in implementing pre-poll assurances and awaken people,” Rane added.

The failure of the present government will be the basis for Congress victory in the next polls, the letter said. “We should strive hard to highlight the failures of the Modi government through media, social media, public meetings and appoint appropriate party workers and leaders for this purpose,” Rane said.

He suggested that party spokespersons must have in-depth knowledge of policies of the party, working of the government and must be well versed with important issues. “They must have respect in the society,” he added.

He also demanded that “the system of quota for central observers in elections on state level” must be abolished. “There should not be any discrimination against party workers in appointments. Party workers become displeased and image of the party gets maligned due to such discrimination. The party will get a boost if the party president, vice president and general secretaries tour all the states on a regular basis,” Rane suggested.

“There is a class of persons in the party who can be described as complaint-mongers. These persons always resort to complaints and by virtue of their nuisance value get themselves important posts….hardworking and honest party workers are sidetracked due to these complaint mongers and they become disillusioned. The complaint mongers must be kept at distance by the party leadership,” Rane said.

Two men acquitted in kidnapping and rape case

Two youths, accused of abducting and gangraping a girl in 2009, have been acquitted by a local court as the charges against them could not be proved.

However, the case of another minor boy, also allegedly involved in the offence, has been referred to juvenile court.

The accused and the girl’s family are residents of Naupada area in Thane city.

According to prosecution, Ramzan alias Baba Rukhmuddin Shaikh (22 years old in 2009) wanted to marry the 18-year-old daughter of a tempo driver, but her family was against it.

He then allegedly started harassing the girl and her family members.

On August 15, 2009, when her family members were on way to railway station to go to their native place in Uttar Pradesh to get the girl married there, Ramzan, Firoz Siddique Ansari and the minor boy waylaid them near Nitin Company area in Thane city.

They allegedly attacked the girl’s family members with a chopper and other weapons, injuring them.

The three accused then took the girl with them to a lonely place and allegedly raped her repeatedly.

Among the girl’s family members injured in the attack were her father and her 80-year-old grandfather, the prosecution told the court.

Ramzan and Firoz were tried under sections 376 (rape), 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 363 (kidnapping), 366 (kidnapping, abducting or inducing woman to compel her for marriage), 323, 324 read with 34 of the IPC, sections 7 and 25 of the Arms Act and sections 37(1) and 135 of the Bombay Police Act.

Appearing for the accused, advocate C D Deshpande argued in the court that they had no connection with the incident and had been falsely accused of the crime. Hence, the court needs to set them free, the counsel said.

After hearing both the sides, Thane Additional Sessions Judge V V Virkar concluded that the prosecution had miserably failed to prove the charges against the accused.

Hence, the court gave the two men benefit of doubt and acquitted them last week.
