Considering ongoing development driven by the “double engine” government in Uttar Pradesh, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday announced that the state would soon be ahead of all states in terms of new generation infrastructure.

Speaking at an event at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Convention Centre here, Singh mentioned how Uttar Pradesh is moving step by step on the path of development under a “double engine” government run by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Centre, and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in the state.

“We are fortunate that double engine government is working here (in Uttar Pradesh). One is the Central government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the other is the state government under the leadership of Yogiji (Yogi Adityanath) which is working here. The way infrastructure work is being done in Uttar Pradesh, it is definite that the state will be ahead of all the states in terms of new generation infrastructure in coming days,” Singh said.

The senior BJP leader also inaugurated 158 development projects estimated to be worth Rs 185.497 crore at the event and expressed his wish to make Lucknow an international flight operator Airport from where flights for Los Angeles and London will be operated.

Being the Member of Parliament from the city of nawabs, Singh said that six flyovers have been constructed in the city and six more are to be completed soon.

Taking potshots at the previous Congress-led UPA government, Singh said the 2G era was symbolic of policy paralysis and corruption. He further said that there won’t be any scams under the Modi government.

“As long as Modi is the Prime Minister of India, no one can muster the courage to commit scams,” said Singh.

The Defence Minister also lauded Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for his impressive management to make the state’s law and order one of the best in all states.

Noting that corruption could not be erased only by delivering speeches, the Minister said “corruption can be ended by making changes in the system”.

Citing former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s famous remark in 1985 that only 15 paise of every rupee meant for the welfare of downtrodden reaches them, Singh said PM Modi has made a miraculous change in the system to end corruption and “every paisa released from (Centre) in Delhi reaches the poor as it is because there is no place for corruption”.

Political leaders from J&K met Ghulam Nabi Azad; planning to launch a new national party

Several political leaders from Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday met veteran leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, who is planning to launch a new national party, a day after tendering resignations from all posts of Congress.

“MLAs from Jammu and Kashmir are here. A few more-some senior leaders and ex-ministers-will come in the evening. Azad Sa’ab said a national party will be formed, we’ll begin from J&K and the upcoming poll will be fought strongly. Don’t want to reply to comments, we’ll reply with a victory,” said ex-Congress leader Salman Nizami.

The meeting came within 24 hours of Azad’s resignation from all posts in Congress and it holds importance as the polls in the valley are likely to be held later this year.

“Under the leadership of Azad ji we will launch a national party and the work will begin from Jammu and Kashmir. Azad ji will go to J&K and will form an alliance with like-minded parties and leaders. All the criticism coming Azad Ji’s way will be answered by winning elections,” ex- Congress leader Salman Nizami had earlier announced.

The decision to launch a new national party came just hours after the veteran Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, in a letter to Congress President Sonia Gandhi resigned from all positions of the Congress party including the primary membership. Reactions from numerous political leaders poured in after the sudden resignation. Lawyer-turned-politician Jaiveer Shergill slammed the Congress party for its ‘coterie culture.’

Recently Shergill had resigned as Congress spokesperson. “Now a senior leader is speaking about it becoming a club of PAs and security guards and it shows that leaders across age groups are frustrated and disappointed by this entire coterie culture that is thriving in the Congress,” Shergill told to agencies.

He also slammed the upcoming Bharat Jodo Yatra by Congress and said, “Bharat Jodo is a PR gimmick. In reality, this cabal is working within Congress on ‘Congress Todo Abhiyan’, elbowing out all the well-meaning leaders. This letter speaks loudly of sentiments of thousands of well-meaning Congress workers who are troubled by this ‘Darbari’ culture.”

Rajasthan Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Ashok Gehlot on Friday took a dig at Ghulam Nabi Azad over his resignation from the party and his allegations against Rahul Gandhi and said “no one expected he would write such a letter”.

“I read the statement of Azad, he has been my friend for over 42 years, I am deeply hurt, and I have no words to express what I feel about his resignation letter. The party gave him opportunities, be it Indira Gandhi or Sanjay Gandhi. He served at many positions in the party be it being MP from Maharashtra twice, five-six times Rajya Sabha member. Congress left no dearth in giving him opportunities. Whatever identity we have in the country, it is because of Congress and the faith of high command has on us. Only a few get a chance and not everyone. It is a challenge before the high command to select. No one expected he would write such a letter,” Gehlot said.

This latest high-profile exit from the Congress party comes after the polls for the Congress President were deferred.

Azad’s resignation follows a series of exits of senior leaders from the party, including Jyotiraditya Scindia, Jaiveer Shergil, and Jitin Prasada, amongst others.

The water level continued to be above the danger mark in the Ganga and Yamuna in Prayagraj, so water entered densely populated colonies in the Uttari Rajapur area on Friday night. It left the residents searching for shelter, despite the rescue mission getting underway.

The probability of inundation was feared after water was released from the Chambal Betwa Ken into the Yamuna river and from Uttarakhand into the Ganga river. Due to this, the water levels in both rivers have gone above the danger mark.

National Disaster Response Force has started the rescue mission in the affected areas. It is providing relief materials and also relocating the affected people. The affected people were not ready when suddenly water started entering their houses on Friday night.

“We didn’t even know when suddenly water entered our houses, we don’t know where to go, but the rescue team is helping us,” said the affected people.

Brajesh Kumar Tiwari, the NDRF officer also said that the water level is expected to rise in the coming days.

As per the briefing by the Investigating Officer, Goa Police’s investigation is going in the correct direction.”

Goa police have added one more FIR against the drug peddler and owner of Curlies under the section of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.

On Friday Phogat’s PA Sudhir Sangwan and his associate, Sukhwinder Singh was arrested in connection with the alleged murder.

Sonali Phogat, 42, was declared dead at the St Anthony Hospital at Anjuna in North Goa on August 23. A post-mortem report revealed blunt force injury on her body, following which the Goa Police registered a murder case.

Phogat’s PA and his associate were arrested after police accessed the CCTV footage in which the trio were seen partying at a club.

“On the basis of CCTV footage, it was seen that the accused Sudhir Sangwan and his associate Sukhwinder Singh were partying with the deceased at a club. A video establishes that one of them forcefully made the victim consume a substance,” Inspector General of Police Omvir Singh Bishnoi said.

Phogat was cremated at her hometown in Hisar yesterday. Rinku Dhaka had earlier filed a complaint alleging that Phogat was murdered by Sudhir Sangwan, her personal trainer along with Sukhwinder Singh who intended “to take over her properties and financial assets to finish her political career.”

“When confronted, Sukhwinder and Sudhir confessed that they intentionally mixed an obnoxious chemical into a liquid and made the victim drink it,” IGP Omvir Singh Bishnoi said.

The two accused confessed that after they intentionally mixed an obnoxious chemical into a liquid and made the victim drink it, which made her feel uneasy, after which they took her to the hotel and then to St. Anthony’s Hospital, where she was declared brought dead,” the Goa police said.

The actor, who rose to fame with her TikTok videos, contested the 2019 Haryana election as a BJP candidate but lost to then Congress leader Kuldeep Bishnoi (he has since joined the BJP). She also appeared in the reality show Bigg Boss in 2020.

Eperts, students agree US higher education needs reform despite student loan relief 7

Kirill Krasilnikov-US President Joe Biden’s initiative to forgive at least USD 10,000 in student debt for each eligible borrower will not be enough to improve the situation with higher education in the United States, experts and citizens surveyed by Sputnik believe.

Earlier in the week, Biden announced that the US government will forgive up to USD 20,000 for individuals who took out Federal Pell Grants, while individuals who took out regular federal loans could get up to USD 10,000 in debt cancelled.

. According to the Department of Education, the Biden administration’s student debt relief plan will require borrowers to pay no more than 5 per cent of their discretionary income each month for undergraduate loans, down from the previous 10 per cent . The plan will also cover the borrower’s unpaid monthly interest as long as they make their monthly payments.

The student loan forgiveness program will only apply to individuals who earn an income of less than USD 125,000 a year and will guarantee that no borrower making the annual salary based on USD 15 minimum wage will have to make a monthly repayment.

In addition, the plan will forgive loan balances of USD 12,000 or less for each borrower after ten years of payments.

The federal government’s involvement in student loans goes back to the late 1950s when the launch of the Soviet artificial satellite Sputnik 1 prompted the US to step up its science and technical education through low-cost loans to students in mathematics, science and foreign languages under the National Defense Education Act of 1958.

This was later expanded in the 1960s as part of Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society initiatives, resulting in the arrangement where the government serves as a guarantor of loans made by banks and other private lenders to students, covering losses if a borrower defaults.

Since then, the price of college tuition skyrocketed due to rising demand for higher education and also, as many people claim, due to government-subsidized student loans, which allegedly caused universities to start raising tuition prices and fight to enrol as many students as possible. Now, the overall federal student loan debt has reached $1.6 trillion, with many US citizens being saddled with an exorbitant amount of debt and degrees that do not translate to incomes that would allow them to repay it.

As a result, there have been calls to change the current arrangement, with some insisting on universal forgiveness of student debt and others objecting, saying it would be unfair to those who had already repaid their debts.
