Arvind Kejriwal’s daughter scores 96pc in CBSE Class XII exams

Former Delhi chief minister and Aam Aadmi Party National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal’s daughter Harshita Kejriwal has scored 96 per cent in her CBSE Class XII examination. She was a student of the Science field and says that she now aims to make it to the Indian Institute of Technology just like her father.

Harshita said that she was satisfied with her score and is now looking forward to follow her father’s footsteps. “My parents are my role models. I want to go to IIT. There’s no second option for me,” Harshita said.

Harshita has scored the highest in Physics and says that the subject is her favourite.

She also said that she has been focused and was not affected by her father’s political ups and downs. “I was not affected by my father’s agitations, winning and losing elections,” Harshita said.

‘Judge me by my work’, says HRD Minister Smriti Irani on qualification row

Breaking her silence on her educational qualification row, HRD Minister Smriti Irani, Thursday, sent out an appeal that she be solely judged by her work.

“Extraneous circumstances have been created to ensure that my attention is deviated from the body of work I have been entrusted with. I have been judged by my organisation on the capacity to deliver on assignments,” she said while talking to reporters here.

“Humbly request all to do that. Judge me by my work, I would only say this,” Smriti added.

However, she chose not to respond to questions on the discrepancies in her poll affidavits.

The new HRD Minister is at the centre of a massive row triggered by Congress leader Ajay Maken after he questioned her ability to deliver as she is not even a graduate.

“What a Cabinet of Mr. Modi? HRD Minister (looking after education) Smriti Irani is not even a graduate! Look at her affidavit at ECI site pg 11,” he had tweeted on Tuesday.

Later, the Congress also came to the fore pointing out discrepancies in the poll affidavits filed by her in 2004 Lok Sabha polls and the one filed by her in 2011 Rajya Sabha elections and in her 2014 affidavit, when she contested against Rahul Gandhi from Amethi.

While the 2004 affidavit said she had completed a Bachelor of Arts from Delhi university’s school of correspondence in 1996, the 2011 submission mentioned her “highest qualification” as B Com Part I, again from DU’s school of correspondence, in 1994.

The claim of B Com Part I was also made in her 2014 declaration.

The BJP has strongly defended Smriti Irani and said Congress leaders should leave their “arrogance” behind after the party’s defeat in the Lok Sabha polls and introspect.

“We want to advise Congress leaders that after country’s people rejected them in Lok Sabha elections, they should now leave their arrogance behind and introspect,” BJP spokesperson Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said.

He said the party was defeated in elections due to the “arrogance” of Congress leaders but they are still not ready to leave that behind.

“Congress leaders should now stop using abusive words against BJP leaders. Congress should respect the mandate of the people,” he said.

Smriti’s cabinet colleagues Uma Bharti and Santosh Gangwar fired a counter shot at the Congress by demanding to know how educated was its president Sonia Gandhi.

A fire broke out at a 17-storey building in Surat. The fire broke out at around 9 am in Orchid Complex, a building used as a godown by textile traders. No casualties have been reported so far.

“The fire erupted at Orchid tower in Vipul House, a market of sarees, located in front of Sardar market in Puna Kumbhania area of the city,” a fire brigade official said.

The fire brigade has also declared a ‘brigade call’ and deployed 170 fire fighters, and almost 80 fire vehicles were on the spot, the fire official said.

When more than 16 fire engines are called on a spot, a Brigade Call is declared.

“There are 12 floors in the building which mostly have cloth material establishments,” the official said. The cause of the blaze is yet to be ascertained, he said.

Husband, In-Laws Get Seven Years Jail in Dowry Death Case

A man, along with his mother and two other family members, has been jailed for seven years by a Delhi court for the death of his wife following dowry demand with the judge saying the victim had been treated cruelly and had died in unnatural circumstances.

Additional Sessions Judge Virender Kumar Goyal awarded the jail term to Manjeet Singh, 31, his brother Mukesh Singh, 38, sister-in-law Sheela, 36, and mother Omwati, 55, after holding them guilty in the dowry death case in which the woman, Jyoti, had died within five years of her marriage.

“The incident has taken place within five years of the marriage. Accused have treated Jyoti with cruelty prior to her death and had harassed her. The death has taken place in unnatural circumstances. It is also proved from the deposition of prosecution witnesses that soon before her death, Jyoti was treated with cruelty by the accused for demand of dowry.”

“Besides the injury on neck appeared due to hanging, deceased was also found sustaining other injuries, which have not been opined as old one nor have been explained by the accused persons,” the court.

It imposed a fine of Rs. 5,000 each on the four convicts, residents of Sultanpuri.

It also awarded a compensation of Rs. four lakh to the two-and-a-half-year daughter of Jyoti on account of loss of love and affection and the cost of upbringing and maintenance of the minor.

Out of the compensation amount, Rs. 2.5 lakh and Rs. 1.5 lakh would be paid by Manjeet and Mukesh respectively.

The court, however, acquitted the four of the charges of murdering the victim, saying no evidence has been brought on record that they murdered her and it has been proved that she committed suicide by hanging herself.

According to the prosecution, Jyoti, who had married Manjeet in January 2007, was found hanging in her matrimonial house in November 2011.

The case was registered on the complaint of Jyoti’s brother alleging that her husband and in-laws used to harass and torture her for dowry and also beat her.

When their demands were fulfilled, they kept Jyoti well and thereafter, again they used to harass her, her brother had told the police.

A day before Jyoti’s death, her in-laws had called her mother and a heated conversation took place between them and when they tried calling the victim, her phone was switched off. The next day, they came to know that she had died by hanging herself, he had said.

While convicting Jyoti’s husband and in-laws, the court said from the deposition of witnesses, prosecution has proved beyond reasonable doubt that demand of dowry and cash was raised and twice Rs. 50,000 were given to Manjeet and his family members and for fulfilment of this demand, Jyoti was harassed and treated with cruelty.

Manjeet sought leniency in sentence saying he had lost his wife in this incident and was having clean antecedents.

Mukesh and Sheela submitted that a lenient view be taken as they have to take care of their 10 and 12-year-old kids whose life would be miserable without parents. Omwati pleaded that she was an aged widow and was also suffering from various ailments and a lenient view be taken towards her.

The court awarded the jail term to the four family members after considering their age, character and antecedents.

The secularism debate

Some people are saying that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is not secular. By saying this, they perhaps mean that he will discriminate between Hindus and Muslims thereby creating problems for the latter. Muslims are also worried about a repeat of an incident like the 2002 Gujarat riots. During that time Modi was new in public administration and perhaps he could not exercise control in a better manner. In such cases, there always emerges a better way when you look from the hindsight.

Modi has already said in an interview that he will work for improving the centre-state relationship. All states are coordinating with each other and ruling parties should not say that they have sent money and the state government failed to use it. This difference between we and they should vanish. When Modi says, “Ek Bharat Srestha Bharath”, such fears emerge as if he is going to do something very radical.

We can make our country “shreshtha” by working on the basics. Unbridled growth in human population has to be checked, illegal immigration has to stop (this was hitherto being encouraged for creating vote bank) because otherwise the pressure on available resources will grow. Discipline and accountability has to be included in our administrative system. Allocation of funds does not reach at the grassroots level on account of bureaucratic hurdles.

Skill development programme must be undertaken for the expansion of Railways and road networks (with the help of existing industries). People talk about secularism without working. You understand about secularism not when you are young but after gaining experience of a life time. Muslims are by and large secular because they work, create wealth, jobs, art and music etc; only those who indulge in vote bank politics are not secular. Same is the case with Hindus. The average Hindu who works and leads a normal life, educates their children and injects good habits in them, is secular.

Only those who indulge in corrupt religious practices are not secular. In the last six months, have you heard about the Directive principals in our constitution on any television show? Our TV channels and those who are regulars on these are the ones indulging in needless gossip of secularism. On the other hand, those who are working efficiently in various fields of endeavor are doing better service to the nation and are much more secular. Thus in short, those who work are secular and idlers are not.

‘Now I will fight for BJP from Bangladesh also’

Rakhi-Sawant
Rakhi Sawant regrets her decision to part ways with BJP and wants to rejoin the party.

Bollywood item girl turned politician Rakhi Sawant is unhappy with her decision to disassociate herself from BJP during the recently concluded Lok Sabha election. Rakhi was offered a BJP ticket from Srirampur in West Bengal for contesting Lok Sabha election. However, she declined the party’s offer and instead floated her own party Rashtriya Aam Party (RAP) a move which proved costly for Rakhi as she managed to secure only 1995 votes from Mumbai-North West constituency.

Speaking about her decision to part ways from a party which has formed government at the centre Rakhi said, “I regret my decision to distance from BJP and forming my own party. It was one of the worst decisions which I have taken in my life. I should have continued to remain in the party irrespective of whether I have been allotted a ticket from West Bengal, Bangladesh instead of Mumbai.”

Rakhi has resigned from her party Rashtriya Aam Party (RAP) and is keen to join BJP. She was contesting against Gajanan Chandrakant Kirtikar of Shiv Sena, Gurudas Kamat of Congress and Mayank Ramesh Gandhi of Aam Aadmi Party.
Speaking about her future plans in politics Rakhi emphasised that, “I want to do everything on my own as there is nobody to guide me. I will learn a lot by joining BJP. The doors of the party are open for me and if it gets shut then I will try other options but I don’t think that party will say no to me.”

Known to be very outspoken, Rakhi says that she has gained maturity after making a foray into politics. She said, “I have become very mature after entering politics. In politics one has to choose his words very carefully before issuing any statement. The language used in film industry is quite different from the one used in politics. Both film and political experience is very vital for me and the latter teaches me what to say and what not to say. Through politics, I can interact with the people about the work performed by me and I will remain answerable to them. I have not studied much about politics but I have observed the functioning of the BJP party.”

Thus Rakhi has finally realised her mistake and wants to join BJP. She urged the saffron party to offer her an opportunity to serve the masses.

When asked about who is her role model in politics Rakhi replied, “I am influenced by former prime minister of India Indira Gandhi, Smriti Irani, Sushma Swaraj and Mayawati. I want to become like Sushma Swaraj. A daughter can’t stay far away from her father for too many days and a father can’t be angry towards his daughter for many days.”

Newly elected Shiv Sena MP Rahul Shewale stages protest against Navy to save the historic INS Vikrant

SG-protest-for-IMS-vIKRANTThe fate of INS Vikrant has once again swung between hope and despair ever since it was decommissioned in January 1997. In a bid to save decommissioned aircraft carrier INS Vikrant from being relocated, Shiv Sena’snewly elected MP from Mumbai South-Central – Shri Rahul Shewale staged massive demonstration in the front of the Naval gate along with hundreds of Shiv Sainiks.

INS Vikrant was India’s only Majestic-class aircraft carrier of the Indian Navy. She played a key role in enforcing the naval blockade on East Pakistan during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971. India purchased INS Vikrant from the United Kingdom in 1957. Following its decommissioning, the aircraft carrier was auctioned for Rs 60 crore as the Maharashtra government expressed its inability to maintain and preserve INS Vikrant.

The Supreme Court allowed the shifting of the 70-year-old aircraft carrier in scrap yard, as the Maharashtra government told the apex court that INS Vikrant was in a condition of extreme deterioration and could no longer be repaired or refurbished. After this failure of state government to protect the historic naval vessel, the Shiv Sena has stepped forward to convert the INS Vikrant into a maritime museum.

According to the latest order by the SC, the Indian Navy today morning shifted the decommissioned INS Vikrant from the Mumbai Naval dockyard to Darukhana ship breaking yard.

In a letter to the Indian Navy, Shri Rahul Shewale has said, “People are emotionally attached to INS Vikrant, the ship was once the pride of India and was an inspiration to the youth of the country. It was the dream of late Shri Balasaheb Thackeray to maintain this ship and turn it into a wartime memorial. Shiv Sena executive president ShriUddhavji Thackeray will discuss this issue with the Union Defence Minister ShriArunJaitley soon.”

Under-fire Chavan to expand Maha ministry on Thursday

Chavan12122Smarting from the worst-ever debacle in the Lok Sabha elections, Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan will expand his ministry on Thursday, in probably the last such exercise before the state Assembly elections due later this year.

Facing demands for his ouster following the drubbing, Chavan had met Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Sunday, a move seen as an attempt to keep under check voices of dissent.

According to sources in the Congress-NCP government, Chavan is likely to fill in three unoccupied ministerial slots of the Congress quota, including that of a Cabinet minister and two Ministers of State.

There have been murmurs of dissent in Congress for a long time over these posts being kept vacant by Chavan.

Congress legislators Amit Deshmukh, son of former Chief Minister late Vilasrao Deshmukh, Kalyan Kale and Rohidas Patil are among the probables from Congress.

The post of a cabinet minister, which falls under NCP’s share, is also vacant following the sacking of Medical Education Minister Vijaykumar Gavit after his daughter Heena contested from Nandurbar seat in the Lok Saba polls on a BJP ticket against 9-term Congress MP Manikrao Gavit and won.

Besides, the term of NCP’s Minister of State for Education, Health and Culture Fouzia Khan as MLC has ended. There had been complaints against her for not cooperating with official NCP candidate in Parbhani during the Lok Sabha polls.

Sources said senior NCP leader Suryakanta Patil is a frontrunner for the Cabinet berth, while state NCP working president Jitendra Awhad and Sharad Gavit may get the position likely to be vacated by Fouza Khan.

A surprise name doing the rounds in political circles as Khan’s replacement is Sharad Gavit, Samajwadi Party MLA and brother of Vijaykumar Gavit, despite the Congress-NCP combine not having any alliance with Mulayam Singh Yadav’s party in Maharashtra.

According to sources, Vijaykumar Gavit is an NCP heavyweight and the party does not want to break off all ties with him. They said if SP objects to Sharad Gavit’s inclusion in the ministry, he may resign and continue as a minister till the Assembly polls, due in less than six months.

Under the law, an individual can continue as a minister for six months without getting elected to the legislature.

Chavan, who was sent from Delhi to take over the reins in 2010 after Ashok Chavan had to step down over his alleged involvement in the Adarsh scam, deftly handled dissidence in his own party and differences with fractious coalition ally NCP but faced a big blow in the Lok Sabha elections.

The Congress’s tally slumped to an all-time low of two and NCP’s four in Maharashtra which sends 48 MPs to the Lok Sabha.

Facing criticism for the party’s abysmal performance, Chavan accepted responsibility for the defeat, triggering demand for his removal which was dismissed by the Congress leadership.

INS Vikrant moved out of Mumbai Naval dockyard

ins-vikrantOver a month after decommissioned Indian Naval Ship (INS) Vikrant was sold, it was on Wednesday moved out of the Naval dock and taken to a ship breaking yard in south Mumbai.

“The ship started from the naval dock at 9.40 AM and reached the yard at around 2.30 PM,” said a source in the Western Naval Command.

The ship will not be broken for now as a petition seeking that it should be converted into a museum is pending in the Supreme Court, the source said.

“We wanted the ship shifted before the monsoon,” he said, adding the vessel could face threat of sinking if moved after the onset of monsoon.

Last month, IB Commercial Pvt Ltd had won the bid for Rs 60 crore to scrap the decommissioned aircraft carrier, which played an important role in the 1971 Indo-Pak war.

Sources in the defence also said that artefacts of the ship have been removed.

“More than 60 per cent of the artefacts have been moved to the Maritime History Society in Mumbai while rest have been shifted to Naval Aviation Museum in Goa,” said the source, adding that smaller relics will be shifted to various museums and motivational centres.

Earlier, the Maharashtra government had expressed its inability to maintain Vikrant,
Indian Navy’s first aircraft carrier which was commissioned in 1961. It was decommissioned in January 1997.

In January 2014, during the hearing of a PIL which opposed the plan to scrap the ship, the Union Ministry of Defence told the Bombay High Court that it had completed its operational life.

The Maharashtra government had stated that to preserve it as a museum would not be financially viable.
