After Modi’s overwhelming victory
Chhota Rajan becomes active

Chhota-Rajan-lThe underworld has become more alert and active after Narendra Modi emerged victorious in the Lok Sabha election. On one hand, underworld don Dawood Ibrahim has relocated to the Af-Pak border fearing a commando type operation while on the other hand Chhota Rajan is all set to become active in Mumbai. Chhota Rajan who claims be a pro-Hindu don considers Dawood Ibrahim as his arch rival. Thus the underworld too has been divided on the communal lines. There is a possibility that Mumbai might once again witness a clash between members of Chhota Rajan and Dawood Ibrahim gang.

A close aid of Chhota Rajan spoke to AV and said, “After the formation of the new government at the centre our gang will now become more active in the city. We will be targeting those gangsters who support Dawood Ibrahim in the city and assisting him for expanding his network. We want to eliminate Dawood Ibrahim as he has been responsible for killing several people belonging to our community.”

Chhota Rajan was a former key aide and lieutenant of Dawood Ibrahim. He parted ways with Dawood after the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts for targeting the Hindu community. A group within the D-company led by Chhota Shakeel and Sharad Shetty had started to resent the growing clout and influence of Rajan. They had started planting stories against him to Ibrahim. Rajan, increasingly became suspicious and insecure of the developments taking place within the gang and began fearing for his life. This led him to request the Indian officials to help him flee Dubai and settle down in another country under a different identity, in return for information about Ibrahim’s syndicate.
Chhota Rajan born and brought up at Mumbai’s Chembur area and joined the underworld with the assistance of his mentor Bada Rajan.

In the past an attempt was made to assassinate Chhota Rajan by the Chhota Shakeel aid of Dawood Ibrahim in Bangkok. However his efforts went in vain as Rajan managed to escape.

After the 1993 Bombay blasts Chhota Rajan became the arch rival of Dawood Ibrahim and the gang war between them had intensified.

According to a close aid of Chhota Rajan, few months ago Dawood as a part of his strategy spread rumours that Rajan has died due to heart attack for ascertaining his exact location. But later on Rajan himself called the media and confirmed that he is fine. Active members of Dawood’s gang is also evading from Mumbai after the Modi government came into power.

Adarsh-tainted top bureaucrats Jairaj, Pradeep reinstated

J-S-SahariaThe Maharashtra government has reinstated senior bureaucrats Jairaj Phatak and Pradeep Vyas, who were suspended two years ago for their alleged role in the Adarsh housing scam.

Chief Secretary J S Saharia said the two officials were reinstated on Monday. Postings will be given to both the bureaucrats later. However, inquiry into cases against them will continue, he said.

According to a Government Resolution (GR), a government employee cannot be suspended for more than two years. They said criminal proceedings and departmental enquiries are on against the two. They were suspended on March 22, 2012.

While the CBI found Phatak’s son Kanishk had a flat in the posh South Mumbai society, Vyas’s wife Seema, herself an IAS officer, had a flat in her name. The two were jailed for more than two months.

Phatak, who was member secretary of a statutory board before his suspension said a departmental enquiry has been initiated against him and Vyas.

“We have been given a showcause notice and asked to respond in ten days. The notice was served on May 19,” he said adding the case in High Court pertains to whether CBI has jurisdiction in the matter.

“We will defend ourself and prove the land belonged to the state government. We had to be suspended because CBI arrested Pradeep Vyas, and after being in custody for 48 hours we are deemed to be suspended. I was arrested after suspension,” he said adding both he and Vyas are likely to be given non-executive posts as is done for government officials facing inquiry.

“It is better to work and get 100 per cent salary rather than sitting at home and get 75 per cent of it,” Phatak reasoned.

Vyas was Finance Secretary at the time of his suspension.

Phatak is a 1978 batch IAS officer and will retire in 2015 while Vyas, a 1989 batch officer, will retire in 2023.

Phatak, a former Mumbai municipal commissioner, was responsible for clearing an additional floor for the Adarsh building without the requisite sanctions, while Vyas was the collector of Mumbai when the land was allotted to the controversial Adarsh society in 2003.

The two were also indicted by a Judicial Commission headed by Justice J A Patil.

Witness says Salman Khan wasn’t drunk as he didn’t smell of alcohol

drunk-salluIn a breather to actor Salman Khan, a witness informed a local court that it appeared to him that the actor was not drunk at the relevant time after he had rammed his car into a shop in suburban Bandra in 2002, killing one person and injuring four others who were sleeping outside.

Francis Fernandes (63), a neighbour of Salman, who stays near the site of the mishap, told sessions judge D W Deshpande that he had gone to the spot after hearing shouts of people and saw the actor surrounded by a mob armed with sticks and stones. Fernandes said he knew Salman since his (the latter’s) childhood and stayed in the same area where the actor resided and also where the accident had taken place.

“Salman did not appear to be drunk as there was no smell of alcohol when I went near him. He looked normal and walked straight,” the witness said much to the relief of Salman, who was standing in the dock listening to the deposition.

Fernandes said this while replying to questions put by Salman’s lawyer Srikant Shivade during cross-examination. The case of the prosecution is that the actor was drunk when he met with an accident.

According to police, Salman had allegedly consumed a couple of drinks with friends at a bar in J W Marriot hotel at Juhu before he met with an accident on September 28, 2002, outside American Bakery. “I got up on hearing the shouts of “Bachao Bachao” and went down to the place where people had gathered with sticks and stones. I went near Salman. On seeing me, he said ‘Commander mujhe bachalijiye'(Commander save me from the people),” Fernandes told public prosecutor Jagannath Kenjralkar.

The witness said that he took Salman to the direction of his (actor’s) house. Fernandes said his wife asked the actor to sit in their car and go home. Salman then left for home in their car, the court was told. Fernandes said he was successful in pulling out the actor from the scene of mishap and advised him to go home. To another question, the witness said that the mob had become violent after the accident.

After seeing the crowd armed with sticks and stones, I felt that Salman’s life was in danger. Police, however, had not arrived by that time and came after 10 to 15 minutes. A clean shaven Salman, attired in a navy blue shirt and jeans, had come to the court along with his bodyguard and two sisters, Alvira and Arpita.

Seven witnesses have so far deposed in Salman’s hit-and-run case. Of them, three persons, who were injured in the mishap, have identified the actor saying he had got down from the car which met with an accident on the ill-fated day. One witness told the court that the actor had come to ‘Rain Bar’ at a five-star hotel along with his friends (prior to the mishap) and he had served them drinks but he could not remember whether Salman had consumed alcohol.
The court deferred the trial to June 23 after hearing the prosecution and the defence lawyers. Police filed an application today seeking a direction to investigate into allegations of threat given on telephone to a witness by a lawyer. However, the court said it would not interfere and pass any order at this stage as police have already been asked to probe the matter.

The witness, Muslim Shaikh, had complained that he was allegedly threatened by lawyer MukeshPande on May 4 on his cellphone to go back on his version in lieu of a Rs. five lakh offer. However, the lawyer, in a statement to police, denied the allegations and produced cell phone records to show that he had not made any such call to the witness on that day. Advocate Pande is the same lawyer who had helped Shaikh get compensation from Salman on the orders of the Bombay High Court.

On December 5 last year, the court had ordered a fresh trial on the ground that the witnesses had not been examined in the context of aggravated charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, which was invoked against the actor midway through the case. The charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder attracts a 10-year sentence. The actor had earlier been tried by a magistrate for a lesser offence of causing death by negligence, which entailed an imprisonment of two years.

The case, dragging on for over a decade, had taken a twist earlier this year when the magistrate, after examining 17 witnesses, held that the charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder was made out against Salman and referred the matter to a sessions court, as cases under this offence are tried by a higher court.

Shah Rukh Khan slams reports of making anti-Modi comments on Twitter

Shahrukh_interactsSuperstar Shah Rukh Khan has slammed claims that he had made anti-Narendra Modi comments on Twitter.

There was a buzz in the social media that the 48-year-old actor had apparently tweeted that he will leave India if Modi becomes Prime Minister, a claim that Shah Rukh denied.

The actor took to the microblogging site to clear the confusion.

“Good time to tell all fools who are talking of a tweet that I didn’t tweet, you suck as much as the grammar of that fake tweet & I’m being kind,” he posted yesterday.

In fact, on May 16 SRK tweeted, “What a solid mandate given by the people. It proves again that the only constant is change. Now to move forward with strong and active faith, India.”

The confusion arose when TV actor Kamaal R Khan, who uses shortened version of his name KRK on Twitter, boasted on Twitter that he was leaving India following Modi’s electoral win.

“So I am leaving India forever as I promised. I don’t know if SRK and others will keep their promise but I will keep,” Kamaal, a former ‘Bigg Boss’ contestant, had posted.

Hasten decision-making, Sharad Pawar tells Maharashtra government

Ineffective execution of welfare schemes and a string of scams led to dismal performance of UPA in Lok Sabha polls, NCP chief Sharad Pawar said on Tuesday.

He also asked the Congress-NCP government in Maharashtra to hasten decision-making ahead of Assembly polls due in a few months.

“We brought schemes but failed to ensure effective execution like implementation of the Food Security Act. A lot of time was wasted on the issue of making Aadhaar card mandatory for gas cylinders. In the end, we had to face the people’s wrath,” he told reporters.

Pawar said public anger against the UPA dispensation also stemmed from a series of corruption cases.

“In cases of corruption like the 2G, CWG and coal scams, it was the judiciary which initiated action and so people were angry with the government,” he said.

Pawar, whose party received severe drubbing in the elections in Maharashtra where it could win only four of the 21 seats it had contested, stressed the need for the Congress-NCP government to pull up its socks and expedite the decision-making process to turn the tide in their favour ahead of the crucial Assembly Elections later this year when the combine would seek a fourth term in office.

“If we expedite important decisions in the next two months, then only the ruling combine will benefit,” Pawar, whose party has often been critical of Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan over alleged slow pace of decision-making, said. Pawar said the two parties will contest the Assembly polls together.

“Congress and NCP, which are seeking the fourth term in office, will fight the assembly polls in alliance,” he said, expressing confidence that the political situation will change and the ruling alliance would retain power in the state.

Pawar said he had expected BJP to win a little over 200 seats and Congress’ tally in the range of 80-100 seats. “However, the actual results were unexpected,” he added.

He said BJP made good use of the electronic media to campaign aggressively.

Pawar has convened a meeting of NCP ministers, senior leaders and office-bearers on May 22 and 23 to take stock of Lok Sabha results in which his party’s tally was whittled down to just four and that of Congress to two.

Shiv Sena firm on bigger pie in seat-sharing for Assembly polls

Leaders of a buoyant BJP in Maharashtra may be hoping for more seats to contest in upcoming state Assembly polls but ally Shiv Sena does not seem to be in a mood to insist on continuing to play the role of “big brother” in state politics.

Though there has been no formal demand from BJP leaders, there is speculation in the state political circles that an aggressive BJP, after its impressive outing in Lok Sabha polls – it bagged 23 seats, compared to 18 by Sena –may insist on a bigger share.

In 2009 Assembly polls, the alliance partners had stuck to the 171:117 formula, wherein Sena contested 171 and BJP 117 of the 288 seats in the Lower House in Maharashtra.

BJP leaders are aware that if the formula, in force since the days of late Pramod Mahajan, considered the architect of the saffron alliance in the state, continues, then the chances of having a BJP chief minister may get slim.

Senior BJP leader Gopinath Munde, in the forefront of cobbling up the Mahayuti grand opposition alliance ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, may be BJP’s choice to lead the party’s Assembly poll battle.

Besides BJP and Sena, the Mahayuti comprises Raju Shetty’s Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana, Mahadeo Jankar’s Rashtriya Samaj Paksha and Ramdas Athawale-led Republic Party of India (RPI).

State BJP president Devendra Fadnavis has tactfully voiced his party’s desire to contesting more Assembly seats. “In 24 Lok Sabha seats contested in Maharashtra, BJP leads in 133 Assembly constituencies out of the 144 (Assembly segments in these 24 LS seats,” he said.

Marks & Spencer plans to open 100 stores in India by 2016

Britain’s largest clothing retailer Marks & Spencer on Tuesday said it will open a hundred stores in India by 2016 instead of 86 as planned last year. The clothing retailer, which runs 40 stores in the country, said its Indian same-store-sales grew 13 percent in the fiscal year ended March 2014.
Same-stores-sales is a key performance metric for retailers and measures sales growth at stores open for more than a year. Comparative figures from a year earlier were not available.
Three years ago, M&S identified India as a priority market and Chief Executive Marc Bolland last year said the company planned to offer more stylish and fashionable clothes to Indians after years of struggling with brand positioning in the country. M&S faces tough competition in India from the world’s biggest fashion retailer Inditex SA and its Zara brand.
Marks & Spencer operates in India in a joint venture with Reliance Retail, a unit of billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries. “Together with our partner Reliance Retail, we are continuing to invest into accelerating our growth in India as we build a leadership position in the market,” said Venu Nair, Managing Director of Marks & Spencer Reliance India.

CBI Files Closure Report in Nitesh Rane Shooting Case

The CBI today filed a closure report in a shooting case in which Nitesh Rane, son of senior Maharashtra Congress minister Narayan Rane, is accused of firing at a member of his NGO ‘Swabhiman Sanghatna’ in 2010.

“We filed the closure report in the local metropolitan magistrate’s court today. During the investigation the allegation of firing was not found to be correct”, a CBI spokesperson said, adding the hearing on the report is likely to take place next week.

Swabhiman Sanghatna member Chintu Shaikh had filed a complaint with Powai police on September 23, 2010, alleging that Nitesh, who was upset that day for some reason, had shot at him twice at the NGO’s Khar office. Shaikh had alleged that one of the bullets grazed his cheek, causing an injury.

The investigations were initially conducted by local police.

However, the probe was transferred to CBI by the Bombay High Court in March 2011 after observing that there were inexplicable circumstances which created doubts about the manner of probe.

The CBI then registered an FIR under section 307 (attempt to murder) and various other sections of the Indian Penal Code against Nitesh.

However, in March 2012, the CBI filed a closure report before a magistrate’s court stating that there was no evidence or eyewitnesses to prove the case against Nitesh. Shaikh challenged this report and in August 2013 the magistrate court rejected CBI’s closure report and asked the agency to re-investigate the case.

The CBI last month had informed the Bombay High court that it was going to file a closure report in the case.
