Post Lok Sabha, Assembly polls high on Cong-NCP agenda

Even as counting of votes for Lok Sabha polls will be taken up on May 16, the ruling alliance partners Congress and NCP have decided to launch preparations for Assembly elections slated later this year.

As part of preparations, Union Agriculture Minister and NCP chief Sharad Pawar earlier this week met senior leaders of his party to take stock of political situation in Maharashtra and also assessed party’s chances in 21 seats it had contested in the state in recently-concluded Lok Sabha elections.

Pawar also called upon the party workers and leaders to begin groundwork for upcoming elections.

Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan had already declared that Congress and NCP, who have been in alliance since 1999, will fight the polls together to claim power for the fourth term to keep NDA alliance of Shiv Sena and BJP at bay.

Pawar also held one-on-one meetings with district unit chiefs of NCP.

According to sources in NCP, Pawar, who is currently abroad, will return next week.

Pawar has convened a meeting of various stake-holders, including candidates who had contested Lok Sabha polls, party district unit chiefs, MLAs, ministers and office-bearers, on May 10 at “Devgiri”, the official residence of deputy Chief Minister and his nephew Ajit Pawar, they said.

“Pawar is expected to hand over responsibilities for the Assembly polls to senior leaders and office-bearers,” according to sources.

Meanwhile, state Congress unit is also holding a review meeting tomorrow of its district unit chiefs and office-bearers as the part of preparations for Assembly polls.

“Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, MPCC president Manikrao Thakare will be present at the meeting,” they added.

Though the coalition partners fought the Lok Sabha polls unitedly and with better coordination, there were a few instances wherein local Congress leaders worked against official NCP candidates.

“Unbiased” journalism can’t expire”

Nowadays, media is being abused and has been given various adjectives. Readers and viewers are questioning in doubt its integrity, whenever they see some ‘biased’ news. Credibility has declined. For this, I don’t want to blame anyone, neither media nor readers or viewers. Journalists abide by accountability before the society in general, before the law and the professional connotation. The social responsibility of the journalist is that he acts in accordance with his personal ethical standards. Journalists’ main goal is to guarantee the rights of citizen and provide right and important information to his readers, which allows them to form adequate impression about social processes, their essence and importance, about the situation in their day today’s world.
Everyone wants journalists to be honest and unbiased. However, here the question is that, do we really respect neutral reporters, newspapers and broadcasters? If you don’t know, ask me, what is the pain of being an ‘unbiased’ journalist. They are attacked by all the sides. If they not take one particular stand then no one stands with them. That happened with me; I criticise as well as praise political parties according to its stand on the subject. Whenever I write something against the Congress Party, I’m labeled as BJP supporter and if I write against Narendra Modi then I’m branded as the Congress Party ‘paid’ journalist or biased towards AAP. Really, we don’t like unbiased journalists, because they are not writing what we want. They speak their mind being unbiased. Freedom of the ‘Press’ is one of the major elements of the fundamental rights of freedom of speech, an obligatory element for ensuring other civil rights and freedoms. Freedom of the press involves the possibility to freely discuss and criticise the activities of both the authorities, civil and private structures. Journalists contribute to the realisation of the right to express unpopular opinions or agree with the point of view expressed by the majority. The journalist must defend freedom of speech; retain independence of his/her political views and convictions. He/she must resist any efforts to misrepresent information or introduce restriction. Like any other citizen, the journalist has a right to political and other convictions. However, in his/her professional activity he/she should remain neutral and objective.
The journalist should do his/her best to acquire information from all possible sources, to make sure it is complete, truthful and unbiased. Information which may upset or embarrass a person should be checked prudently. Respecting the right of society to objective information, the journalist must convey truthful information and a whole spectrum of opinions on certain issues. Today, journalism is in the custody of corporate houses, mafia and politicians. If media is exploited by these people then you cannot expect hundred percent truth with them. Banner power is bigger that the reporter/anchor or editor. To fight this evil of the fourth estate, we stood alone as a self-funded organisation but people are yet to accept us because we are small media. People don’t want to give priority to small media groups as their reach is limited and such media houses may not help them spread message widely as they expect.
I am fortunate that we have good readers, who have trusted us and believed in our integrity. Unbiased journalism does not mean that the journalists should refrain from expressing their personal opinions. However, readers should be able to tell the difference between the articles stating facts and materials expressing someone’s opinion or interpretation of events. However, this principle should not limit the journalist in choosing the style of writing. The journalist should not be a presenter for anyone’s interest.
We avoid making mistakes, if at all, then we immediately correct it. Corrections of significant mistakes should be published without delay in a visible place. We are not robots. Expression of emotions is expected. To conceal disappointment, anger, or compassion at human suffering would be dishonest. Yet emotions in journalism can be over-used and manipulated. We need freedom to breath, to do justice to this profession. Unwanted and unexpected moral policing and taunting may discourage us from doing well.
For me, this journey was not easy, when I was terminated from a media house for not writing what exactly my publisher wanted me to write (that was one-sided story on a politician, whom publisher was supporting), I decided to have my own publication, but every venture needs money. No one took me seriously when I expressed my desire about having my own newspaper.
To fulfill my dream of starting my own newspaper, I mortgaged my father’s house which was transferred to me after his death. Everything is fresh in my memory though five years for the constant struggle is passing by. From the time I started this endeavor to cope up with the trends, the challenges against the ethics, I received threatening phone calls from the impotent, spamming on social networks and the ever famous blogs against me to defame me. There were millions of incidents and I don’t want to recall them at all, who have tried to delude us in our way. We have skipped the hurdles and reached so far, the next level is still to arrive.
I should tell my readers that e are struggling from year one, the first problems which we faced were finances. The lack of finances where one lady had to toss the gambling coin in the air, with a possibility of either getting it or losing it all and guess what, we had the ‘heads’ and ‘tails’ soon followed. It was totally a game of guts that we did. So far, the media was always owned by the ‘rich’ or ‘capitalists’ who had their own backing and they rely on them. Thus, the basic idea of parallel media died and pseudo journalism flourished right from the early times. It was surely difficult for all of us to survive in the market.
The ‘pehchaan’ required from distributing the newspapers to holding up the cameras, it was a true challenge against the odds but the challenge was accepted and it had to be won, after all, my only house was on mortgage for the gamble. Soon after the first year passed, we tried to dive in the various fields and tried to explore the potential talents from various phases of life. One of which was hackers industry, which is just like underworld life. People are always hiding behind the scenes and we took up the challenge of exploring it, thus, our monthly niche Hacker5 was born.
The awesomeness of movies which came out in the past year has taught us all many lessons too; about the politics, about the way people run the show and about the way people make sure that nothing stops them. It would be a wonder for you to know how we have grown. If you asked what happened two years ago and how politics controlled the country, you would have a different story, so did we. The evolution of thoughts is no more the cul de sac of people owning the media; it is even across the people. The stories which are shown to the people have come transparent and we believe, we have shown you what has been even the more transparent, a clear picture. We have grown up and we promise to keep growing. I will steal it from Wikileaks but with your support and love, we will never stop. Keep us strong!

Snoopgate: UPA to appoint judge soon, BJP calls it ‘desperate attempt’

SnoopgateHitting out at Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde’s hasty announcement to appoint a judge for conducting inquiry into Gujarat snoopgate before counting of votes in Lok Sabha polls, BJP’s senior leader Arun Jaitley on Friday said that the UPA government is being wrongly advised as next government can overturn these appointments.

Jaitley, during a press conference, said that UPA government is desperate to form snoopgate panel, but only few days are left for them.

He further added that the bureaucrats and well-wishers of UPA government have the responsibility to give right advice to the party.

“Only last two phases of the LS polls are left. By now it is clear that the wind is in favour of Narendra Modi. Congress is not a major player in last two phases. Hence, it’s well within the rights of the next government to cancel the new appointments,” he said.

He also appealed the country to make the BJP a clear winner in 2014 General Elections.

On the other hand, BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said, “It is not snoopgate, it is stoop-gate. The Home Minister of India is stooping to this level. I can see the desperation…. No judge is willing to inquire into it, but they are insisting. We don’t fear from you.”
Union Law Minister Kapil Sibal on Friday announced that the Congress-led UPA government will appoint a judge for the ‘snoopgate’ commission before May 16, the day when the electoral outcome will be known.

Sibal’s statement was later confirmed by Shinde.

Asked whether the appointment of a judge in the midst of Lok Sabha elections would not amount to violation of the Model Code of Conduct, Shinde said, “It will not” as the decision had been taken more than four months ago by the Union Cabinet.

“I am worried. The way the Chief Minister of Gujarat had snooped into the life of a woman, I am really worried what will happen to the women of the country if he becomes the Prime Minister,” he said.

Sibal, meanwhile, rubbished BJP leader Arun Jaitley’s claim that no judge will “lend” himself to the “political and malafide” exercise targeting Narendra Modi.

Sibal also said that Modi against whom accusations have been made in the controversy will be investigated.

“You will get a snoopgate judge before May 16. I don’t know why these people are so worried? Why leaders of BJP are worried and why they are making public statement that no judge should join this commission?,” he said here.

The Congress leader said BJP is worried as its leaders know the fact that “once the commission is set up there is no saving for Narendra Modi.”

“Because there is documentary evidence of what he (Modi) has done and how he has snooped the activities of a young girl,” he said.

Narendra Modi leaves ‘good friend’ Ahmed Patel fuming

Narendra Modi’s interview with Doordarshan has left Sonia Gandhi’s political secretary Ahmed Patel fuming with anger over his fellow Gujarati’s claim that they were ‘good friends’ in the past.

Patel’s discomfort in being seen as having any link with Modi, even in the past, is understandable given his status as one of the closest confidants of 10 Janpath.

Narendra Modi is the ‘Maut Ka Saudagar’, any association with him, leave alone friendship is something which Patel would like to keep at pole length, even from his shadow.

However, Patel did agree that he had lunch with Modi once in 1980 (in the know of Rajiv Gandhi) but has not had even a cup of tea with Modi since he became chief minister in 2001.

“After he became CM then maybe we talked on the phone during festivals back then. But not after that,” he said.

“I was laughing when I heard Modi ji’s statement where he said I am his friend. Modi ji has no friends in his own party, then how can I be his friend?,” he added.

Later Patel said that he will leave public life if Modi can prove that he had gone to his office or home after the latter took over as Chief Minister.

“Ahmedbhai is among the best friends I have in Congress but not now … I had a good friendship with him and would have preferred that it had remained so … but he now runs away from me and doesn’t take my calls,” Modi had said in the interview with Doordarshan.

Modi’s comments on his relationship with Patel were edited out when the interview was telecast on Sunday, however, Modi’s office later released the unedited version of the interview, much to the discomfort of Patel.

Playing on the Advani-Modi friction to target Modi, Patel said, “If he can’t even invite Advaniji for a meal, how can he invite me?” adding, “I have never asked him for any professional or personal favour.”

However, the moot question remains: Is there a need for Patel to get jittery about his past equation with Narendra Modi.

Priyanka Gandhi slams Narendra Modi, says he is hankering after power

In a veiled attack on Narendra Modi, Priyanka Gandhi on Friday said there is a leader in the country who wants power for himself and makes repeated demands to strengthen him.

Campaigning for her mother Sonia Gandhi, she also alleged that books with baseless material written about her family were being dumped a night before at places where her public meetings were scheduled.

Holding that the level of election campaign in the country has stooped down to a very low level, she said, “Politics is seen with a sense of service, but few leaders in the country do not think about that.”

However, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi’s politics was not that to demand, but that of a sense of service, she said.

“He wants to give you strength. He also wants to give you power. There is a leader in the country, who wants power for himself. He keeps on demanding to strengthen him…,” she said, targeting Modi.

“My father had a visionary political thinking and Rahul has learned from him. The parameter and strategy of Amethi’s development was prepared by Rajiv Gandhi 35 years ago, this is the reason barren land is not visible here,” she said.

Priyanka said that books containing false accusations against her family have been found at places where her public meetings have been scheduled.

“I have come to know that at places where my public meetings are scheduled some books are thrown a night before in which dirty and false things are written about my family. Those indulging in such activities are cowards,” she said at Shahgarh Shaheed Chowk in Gauriganj Assembly area.

“If they have to say something, they should come in front of me and talk. Indulging in such activities at midnight is not justified,” she said. Blaming Opposition for the absence of proper power supply here, Priyanka said her “hands are tied” because of a court case in the matter.

Addressing an election meeting attended mostly by women, she said the party has made many efforts to provide 24 hours power supply but despite that it could not do so.

Will Mulayam Singh Yadav take Muslims to jannat? asks Shahnawaz Hussain

Sparking verbal duel with Samajwadi Party, BJP national spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain on Friday asked if SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav is a Pope for Muslims.

Replying to Samajwadi Party leader Abu Asim Azmi’s shocker that Muslims who do not vote for his party are not “true Mulsims”, Hussain asked: “Will Mulayam take them (Muslims) to jannat (heaven)?”

On Thursday, while addressing an election rally in support of SP candidate Bhalchandra Yadav at Khalilabad, Azmi had said: “A Muslim, who does not vote for SP and talks against it is not a Muslim. His DNA test should be conducted. See whether he is from RSS.”

“I want to say that he cannot be a true person. What SP supremo Mulayam Singh has not done for them (Muslim community),” Azmi, who is the Maharashtra unit chief of SP, had asked.

This is not the first time Azmi got himself embroiled in a controversy. Last month, the SP leader was in news when he said victims in rape cases should also be punished.

Speaking to a leading Mumbai tabloid, Azmi had said, “Rape is punishable by hanging in Islam. But here, nothing happens to women, only to men. Even the woman is guilty.”

BJP fielded Smriti Irani to help Rahul Gandhi win from Amethi: Arvind Kejriwal

Launching a blistering attack on Rahul Gandhi, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal on Friday said that the entire country would thank the people of Amethi if they vote the Gandhi scion family out of power.

While campaigning for his party colleague Kumar Vishwas, the AAP chief said that the country needs to be freed from dynasty rule.

Taking on both the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party, Kejriwal said that both the national parties have only one agenda — to target the AAP.

The activist-turned politician alleged that both BJP and the Congress are hand-in-gloves, proof being that only the AAP was being attacked in Varanasi by both the parties.

“Have you ever seen the BJP attacking Rahul Gandhi or the Congress attacking Narendra Modi and Smriti Irani?” Kejriwal asked the gathering.

Further raising his rhetoric against both the ruling and opposition parties, Kejriwal said, “The BJP should not have fielded Smriti Irani from Amethi. It has only done so to cut votes and make Rahul win.”

Chennai Bomb Blasts: She Was About to Marry, Her Body Arrived Home

On Wednesday night, just before boarding the Bangalore-Guwahati Express, Swathi Parachuri called her family and asked them to prepare her favourite food; she would see them the next afternoon after four months.

Hours later, Swathi, 24, was dead. One of the two bombs that went off in the train on Thursday morning was planted under her seat. She was killed instantly.

Last year, she had joined as assistant systems engineer at the prestigious Tata Consultancy Services and in about two months, she was to marry a close friend. On this trip home, she wanted to buy gifts for her family with her first earnings.

Swathi’s friends say she bought a “Tatkal” or last-minute ticket to board the train, which would take her to Vijayawada. There, she would have taken a bus to her hometown Guntur.

Her body was taken to Guntur late last night.

Swathi’s father Rama Rao and mother Kamakshi came to Chennai to take her body. Her younger brother is studying at the IIT-Mumbai.

Reports quoted Swathi’s friends as saying she was not meant to be on this train.

She was believed to have tried to buy a ticket for a direct train from Bangalore to Guntur, but changed her plan.

Swathi had studied electronics and computer science. Her friends said she was “very excited” about her job and her first salary on May 8.

She was described by co-workers as a soft-spoken, friendly person who was passionate about photography.

“Hold on, Pain Ends,” said her last Facebook post, describing ‘hope’ as she was about to get married.
