2014 polls is not a fight between two families, two cousins: Maneka Gandhi

Days after Priyanka Gandhi made personal attacks on her son and BJP leader Varun Gandhi, Maneka Gandhi on Wednesday retorted by saying that it looks like a nervous reaction from the Congress party, which is all set to lose badly in this election.

Asking Priyanka Gandhi to focus on the ongoing elections, Maneka Gandhi said, “Priyanka’s attack looks like a nervous reaction as Varun is contesting.”

Reacting to Priyanka’s comment that Varun Gandhi has strayed from his path, Maneka said, “The country will decide who’s done what.”

“It’s not a fight between two families, nor between two cousins,” the BJP leader added further.

Maneka also slammed Priyanka Gandhi and Congress for targeting Modi and making accusations that he had sidelined all his seniors colleagues in the party.

“I don’t know what ideology is being mentioned by the Congress. The results of the 2014 polls will make everything clear,” she said.

Maneka’s reactions came two days after Priyanka said that Varun Gandhi has strayed from his path and urged the voters to show him the right path.

“He (Varun Gandhi) is definitely from my family, he is my brother. But he has gone astray. When a young one in the family chooses the wrong path, then the elders show them the right path, the right way. I urge all of you to show my brother the right path,” Priyanka had said.

The attack on Varun was made by Priyanka as she addressed party workers during her visit to Sultanpur on Saturday when she accompanied Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi as he filed his nomination papers from Amethi.

Significantly, Varun is contesting Lok Sabha polls from the Sultanpur constituency on a BJP ticket.

The comment by Priyanka was made after the 34-year-old BJP candidate had praised the development work done by Rahul in Amethi.

Soon after the remark was made, his mother Maneka Gandhi said that whatever he had said was wrong and there was no development work in the constituency.

Varun Gandhi then backtracked and said that his statement should not be considered as an endorsement of any political party or candidate.

He reported the matter to SI Vinod Kumar Gautam, at Gopal Bagh police outpost but when the police reached the spot SI Gautam was manhandled and his service revolver was snatched and he was also held captive, the complaint filed by Sukhavinder said.

Babul Supriyo asks police 48-hour time to appear before them

Bollywood playback singer and BJP candidate for the Asansol Lok Sabha seat, Babul Supriyo on Wednesday said the Raniganj police station in Burdwan district had asked him to appear before it but he has asked for 48-hours time.

Supriyo said the Raniganj police station sent a letter to him by post yesterday asking him to appear before them as Trinamool Congress leader Senapati Mondal had lodged a complaint against him on March 12.

“I told the police that I had a prior engagement in Kolkata today, so I would not be able to appear before them. I asked them 48-hours time to appear before them,” Supriyo said.

On March 12, Supriyo had alleged that he was heckled by Trinamool Congress backed miscreants when he was participating in a roadshow at Raniganj.

The singer had alleged that the miscreants abused and heckled him and his supporters and pelted stones at them.

After Supriyo had alleged that he was heckled by Trinamool Congress backed miscreants, local TMC leader Senapati Mondal denied Supriyo’s allegation and instead lodged a police complaint against him in the Raniganj police station.

On the basis of the complaint lodged by Mondal the Raniganj police station had asked the singer to appear before them.

BSF kills Pakistani smuggler, recovers eight kg heroin

BSF troopers killed a Pakistani smuggler and recovered eight kg of heroin following a shootout in Punjab’s Amritsar sector, a BSF officer said Wednesday.

The seizure is valued Rs.40 crore in the international market. The Border Security Force (BSF) troopers recovered a pistol magazine, 12 rounds of ammunition, a Pakistani mobile and a SIM card from the spot.

“BSF troopers deployed in Rajatal border outpost of Amritsar sector April 16 observed suspicious movement of four-five smugglers, of whom three were from Pakistan. BSF men challenged the smugglers and when fired upon, the troopers retaliated,” a BSF spokesman said.

The BSF has seized 228 kg of heroin valued Rs.1,140 crore in the first three-and-a-half months of this year. Of this, the BSF recovered 139 kg of heroin in the Amritsar sector alone.

In 2013, 322 kg of heroin was seized in the Punjab sector.

Narendra Modi wants to eliminate Muslims, claims Farooq Abdullah

Union minister Farooq Abdullah today claimed that the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi wants to “eliminate” Muslims. He also said he was confident that the Congress will not allow Mr Modi to succeed in his designs.

“I do not fear Modi but his intentions, which he has for India. He wants to eliminate Muslims if you want to hear the truth,” Mr. Abdullah, who is the president of ruling National Conference in J&K, told reporters in Baramulla, about 55 km from Srinagar.

“He (Modi) wants to play communal politics and is taking the country towards communalism”, Mr. Abdullah said.

He, however, said that the Congress is steadfast to fight him. Mr. Abdullah, who is seeking re-election from the Srinagar Lok Sabha seat, said the state government was committed to revoking the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) and asked Pakistan to stop pushing militants into the state.

“The government is committed that AFSPA has to be removed from the areas where it is not needed. There is no difficulty about that,” he said, adding “I hope our friends in Pakistan would stop sending militants then probably AFSPA would go completely.”

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Congress President Saif-ud-din Soz criticised the Election Commission (EC) for its failure to take action against Mr. Modi for his spendings on election campaign through media houses in the country.

“The EC has to think and see how much money does Modi have. There is a charge on him as a few days back there was a media report that he has spent Rs. 5,000 crore on media. He (Modi) is given a huge space on television channels, why isn’t Advani or Rahul Gandhi or even Sonia Gandhi not given such a coverage? That is why EC has to think about it. The EC is not above law. That is my point,” Mr. Soz said.

Corruption rampant in Delhi

Former coal secretary P.C. Parakh says that JMM chief Shibu Soren demanded 50 lakhs for appointing an official as the CMD of Coal India Ltd. This incident doesn’t surprise me as it always happens in Delhi. I really wonder why Mr Parakh has to enlighten us on this after comfortably enjoying the fruits of the office. I have been shouting from roof tops please do not come out with a fractured mandate to necessitate any coalition because these are the leaders who indulge in maximum corruption in a ruthless manner. Everyone says that they want to eradicate corruption but no government has bothered to check who visits five star hotels in Delhi and with whom. All corrupt practices are negotiated here in the late evenings.

Manmohan Singh has lost all respect. Singh allowed corruption to prosper under his leadership and there is no need to allot him such a huge bungalow in Delhi, what will he do with it? Arvind Kejriwal fools the people by saying that he will eliminate corruption through Lokpal. Why? He should know why corruption is rising in Delhi. I am aware about it even though I have not visited Delhi for many years now. Don’t get fooled by such phony and street smart persons. They are doing more harm to the nation.

Once Modi wins and takes over leaders will put immense pressure on him and say, “Humko minister banao nahin to hum uske paas jayenge”. Shatrughan Sinha has already given an interview to Prabhu Chawla for remaining visible. Sinha is indulging in “Chamchagiri to get a berth in the cabinet. How can you make a person of “vilasi prakriti” a minister.

Times are changing; we should have at least some technocrats of good character and track record in the ministry. Next important task will be to pay attention to bureaucracy who indulge in red tapism and block the files needlessly. The files are considered as jersey cows and the officers want to extract maximum bribe from an applicant before approving it. Do you think Meenakshi Lekhi, Arun Jaitley, Ravi Shankar Prasad and Sushma Swaraj are unaware about it? They know everything but they continue to play the game. In a recent conclave organized by a news magazine, did you notice Arvind Kejriwal’s facial expression when he met Amitabh Bachchan? That says it all. Dear friends, be wise and remain alert.

A progressive judgement

The Supreme Court delivered a verdict on Tuesday incorporating eunuchs in a third category of gender. In doing so, it has restored their dignity, self-confidence and worth. It is also a step towards upholding human rights.

Recognising it as a minority community, the SC has included them in OBC’s and thus they are entitled to quotas in jobs. The apex court has also promised to provide them better amenities such as good education, medical facilities, passport, driving licence and voter card. It promises to grant them the right of social equality. This means any social discrimination against them should be done away with. This is a huge step towards restoration of their self-respect.

Eunuchs all over the nation are overjoyed and indulging in celebrations. After all, after being discriminated for so long, they have finally been delivered justice. Lakshmi Narayan Tripathi, transgender rights activists, was overjoyed with the verdict. She said that while entering the court premises, people’s gaze was on her. But after the delivering of the landmark verdict, she did not care about people at all as justice has been delivered to transgenders.

This verdict is not only an attempt to uphold their rights and restore their dignity, but this is also a step towards their empowerment. It is also an attempt to lessen their sexual exploitation. India is the first country which has placed transgenders into a third category of gender. This reflects a progressive mindset of our judiciary. Transgenders who have earlier been shunned by their families might now be treated better by them. The so-called socially outcast community might now just be a part of this society. Although, one wonders whether this is not a tactic adopted by politicians to lure the voters during election season to cast the votes in their favour. One has to see whether SC retains its verdict on this issue even after the formation of new government.

The verdict is a victory for transgenders, the legal recognition of them as genders. However, tough challenge lies ahead of them. They might be subjected to ridiculing and verbally abused by people when they try to be a part of the mainstream society. People too need to evolve as human beings to understand their worth and be sensitive towards them. May eunuchs see better days in future and may the society accept them to be a part of them. After all, they have been naturally born like that. It is not their fault.

Thank you SC

TransgendersTransgenders welcome Supreme Court’s decision to provide them legal recognition.

In a landmark judgement, the Supreme Court has recognised transgenders as third sex and has granted them equal rights to social acceptability. The apex court said that the community was socially and economically backward. Transgenders have been sidelined by the mainstream society as they were subject to harassment and discrimination.

The SC bench comprising of Justice KS Radhakrishnan and Justice AK Sikri directed the governments both at Centre and state level to provide medical and education facilities and introduce welfare schemes for the transgenders. It said that the transgenders are citizens of the country and have equal rights to education, employment and social acceptability. The court said that the status of the transgenders has degenerated and the time had come for their status to be brought at par with the status of the male and the female.

“Recognition of transgenders as a third gender is not a social or medical issue but a human rights issue,” the court said yesterday.

Welcoming the Supreme Court decision, Lakshmi Narayan Tripathi, transgender rights activist said, “The progress of the country is dependent upon human rights of the people and we are very happy with the judgment as the Supreme Court has given us those rights.”
Reacting to the development, Shaila Jaan, a transgender said, “The judgment is good in terms of recognising us as the third gender, but the discrimination will continue in (the society).”

“We are happy with the verdict delivered by the Supreme Court. Finally, justice has been done to us and we will gain acceptance from the society” said Salma Khan.

“People remain hostile towards transgenders and always harass them. I would like to thank the media and NGOs for highlighting this issue. However, a lot of work needs to be done to end the discrimantion against our community” said Revathi.
The Supreme Court has asked the government to make sure that transgenders get job quotas and facilities including a voter card, passport and driving licence.

The SC said absence of law recognizing hijras as third gender could not be continued as a ground to discriminate them in availing equal opportunities in education and employment.

This is for the first time that the third gender has got a formal recognition. The third gender people will be considered as OBCs, the SC said.

Earlier, the SC on 29th October, 2013 had reserved its judgment on the question of recognition of identity of transgender persons in India.

The SC said the states must construct special public toilets and departments to look into their special medical issues. The bench said they are part and parcel of the society and the government must take steps to bring them in the main stream of society. The SC also added that if a person surgically changes his/her sex, then he or she is entitled to her changed sex and can not be discriminated.
The Division Bench was hearing a public interest litigation, National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) v. Union of India & Ors. [Writ Petition (Civil) No. 400 of 2012] filed in October, 2012.

Forced by police to give confessional statement: Bhatkal

Bhatkal-police-giveIndian Mujahideen (IM) co-founder Yasin Bhatkal and his aide Asadullah Akhtar on Tuesday claimed in a special NIA court that they were “forced” by Maharashtra Police to give confessional statements in connection with the cases lodged against them there.

Bhatkal and Akhtar were produced before District Judge IS Mehta during an in-chamber hearing in pursuance to production warrants issued against them.

They claimed the officials of Maharashtra Police had threatened that that they would be compelled to commit suicide in the custody, sources said.

The accused moved an application through their counsel M S Khan for “retraction of their statements recorded during the custody of Maharashtra Police” and the court has taken it on record.

Sources said both the accused claimed in the court that due to the threats handed out to them by the officials of Maharashtra Police, they were apprehending that some untoward incident might take place with them and they were also forced to put their signatures on some blank papers.

The court, however, remanded both the accused to judicial custody till April 29.

During the proceedings, the court also issued production warrants for April 29 against co-accused Obaid-Ur-Rehman and Abu Faisal who were not produced before it.

According to sources, Obaid-Ur-Rehman is now lodged in a Bangalore jail while Faisal is in Bhopal in connection with the cases lodged against them there.

The court also allowed the plea of National Investigation Agency seeking issuance of proclamation proceedings against 10 top suspected IM operatives who are still absconding.

These suspected members of banned terror outfit IM are accused in connection with a case of alleged conspiracy to carry out terror acts in India.
