Bar girls too deserve a right to livelihood

We are needlessly suppressing and oppressing the beer bars and the women who are employed there. All bars and bar girls are not bad, infact, many of them are quite sensible and sensitive. You can really have some good conversation with them. In a country like ours which has warm climate we need to consume large amount of beer available at much cheaper rates. There is no harm in allowing women to service patrons. I had read report which mentioned that two policemen be posted in the bars. What work will they do?
Law enforcement has to be very swift and severe. Strict action must be taken against offenders responsible for indulging in prostitution activities.

Home Minister R.R. Patil has not taken any steps to improve policing and police welfare. There is lack of coordination between the police and people. The bar girls and bar managers should themselves enforce discipline. Police should ensure that illegal migrants don’t find a way into these bars. Few days back there were reports pertaining to Law College students being arrested for holding obscene party at a bungalow in Lonavala. That is bad. If you want to unwind and enjoy, go to a beach, drink, play beach volleyball, swim, drink beer and play some musical instruments instead of indulging in illegal activities. If you visit foreign countries like South Africa, America, Europe etc; you will notice people taking out their yachts and venturing into the open water. They have fun on weekends. Our country too should follow this practice for promoting health and hone people’s sailing skills.

We don’t want to have consensual sex, we want to rape. I appreciate the honesty and swiftness with which Farhan Azmi and Ayesha Takia have come out openly to disapprove the statements issued by Abu Azmi. You should exercise some restraint and not impose a ban on beer consumption. A person should not be served more than three bottles of beer instead of banning it completely. During my younger days, I used to occasionally visit a bar at Navjeevan and indulge in good conversation while drinking few pegs. I also used to frequent another bar below the Cotton Green railway bridge for listening to some good live music (old film songs). No law and order problem used to occur as the bar used to follow self-regulation. Many of these bar girls deserve our love and respect. I remember offering beer to a girl who used to politely decline by saying “Main doodh peeti hoon”. I used to offer either Rs 20,Rs 50 or a maximum of 100 rupees as a parting tip. Why make so much fuss over it as women too deserve a right to earn their livelihood. Offenders must be punished and not the good hearted.

Hum haath ke saath

Hum-haath-saathNarendra Modi’s meeting with Rajinikanth fails to strike a chord with Tamil voters in Mumbai.

Tamilians residing in Mumbai are not impressed with BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi’s meeting with superstar Rajinikanth as they are only seeing it as a ploy of the party to lure voters. The BJP whose performance in Tamil Nadu has been mediocre for the last 15 years is banking on Rajinikanth’s star power to connect with voters. Since the actor has a huge fan support in Tamil Nadu BJP wants to cash in on his image to attract the masses for winning few seats in the elusive southern state.

Vijay Aiyar a Kandivali resident said, “We are not going to get influenced by Modi’s meeting with Rajinikant. We will vote for a candidate who will work for the welfare of masses.”

Rajnish Vanamali a resident of Nallasopara said, “We respect Rajinikanth but that doesn’t mean we are going to vote for a candidate supported by him.”

CK Subramaniam a retired banker and cricket coach from Sanpada, Navi Mumbai said, “Narendra Modi is playing vote bank politics in a clever manner. Rajinikanth is the most respected actor in the film industry and popular across the world. His blockbuster film Kochadaiiaan is scheduled to be released after the elections and the wave length between South Indian superstar and the Prime Ministerial Candidate is assuming greater importance. Modi is having a political acumen and just a visit to Poes Garden can bring him sufficient votes all over India and give a shock to AIADMK leader J. Jayalalithaa as she is also staying in the same street.”

Suresh Raman an idli vendor from Dharavi said, “I won’t be disclosing about which party I will vote for. But this time around Modi wave is prevailing hence I am sure that there is some positivity about him and people are chanting his slogans. If Rajinikant appeals us to vote for Modi then I will support him.”

BJP will have to really win atleast 20 per cent of seats in south Indian states to improve its prospects to form a government at the centre. Even though the saffron party had formed alliance with several regional parties in Tamil Nadu but it has not been able to increase the tally of seats in the state. Modi met the super star at his Chennai residence on Sunday. The party nonetheless termed it as a personal meeting between the duo and said that it had nothing to do with politics.

AV also spoke to residents of Dana Bunder which is known as mini Tamil Nadu as the area has large number of Tamilians. Here is what they had to say.

Junaid said, “So far in India Tamilians have been denied justice and they were always deprived of their basic human rights. In Mumbai people have never considered us as Indians and politicians approach us for votes. Jo haath ke saath woh apne saath. I am diehard fan of Rajinikanthji and hence pay my hard earned money to watch his movie but we are not buying his endorsement for Modi.”

Mr Rajan who will cast his vote for the first time said, “Tamilians have their own share of problems and Modi might not have discussed about this matter with Thalaiva. Modi never spoke about welfare of Tamilians and fisherman arrested in Sri Lanka. Tamilians are Dravidians but nobody considered them as Indians. I won’t vote for Modi.”

Pakhi said, “Since we had migrated to Mumbai we are compared to Bangladeshi migrants and people address us lungi, pungi, anna and Madrasi. Congress has always stood by common people like us therefore we could reside peacefully in Maharashtra.”

When AV asked Pakhi whether she was harassed during BJP’s reign in Maharashtra she replied, “Lungi hatao aur pungi bajao.”

Punnuswamy said, “A political party which offers us right to vote, reside and provides other facilities wherever we go that party matters to me. We don’t like BJP because Shiv Sena is its alliance partner which has failed to curb corruption. If BJP comes to power then Sena too will be a part of it. The lesser evil will come to power this time.”

Priyanka: The saviour of Congress

Priyanka Gandhi who rarely gives statements in media, released her statement to journalists following reports that she was keen to be the Congress candidate from Varanasi as she was willing to place a higher principle above the real risk of defeat. She trashed reports that she wanted to challenge Narendra Modi for the Lok Sabha seat from Varanasi and was stopped by the party high command, stating it is a “personal” decision not to contest and that her family would wholeheartedly support her if she ever wanted to. Italian culture is somewhat similar to Indian culture, while Indian culture promotes son and Italian culture gives the legacy to daughter. Sonia Gandhi was always inclined towards Rahul Gandhi for power than Priyanka, in spite of knowing that Priyanka has much more potential that Rahul. She went on to reinforce her earlier remarks that she wanted to campaign only in Amethi, from where her brother is contesting, and in Rae Bareli, from where her mother and Congress president Sonia Gandhi is fighting. There has been speculation that Congress is keen on Priyanka playing a bigger role in the party. According to the reports, the decision by Congress on whom to field from Varanasi against Modi was delayed. Congress MLA from there was finally named as the Congress candidate from the holy city. She has always defined her own political role. Priyanka Gandhi decides her own role and has chosen to work in the constituencies of Amethi and Rae Bareli. BJP was screaming that Priyanka Gandhi should have contested from Varanasi. Her husband Robert Vadra should have contested from Vadodara and other members of the Congress’ family of maladministration, who have run away from elections, should also have contested. However, she can be the toughest contender if she comes to active politics against Narendra Modi. There is no problem if she or her husband contest the election as they are very much Indians and have full rights to carry forward the legacy.

At this moment, there are anti-Congress waves and many leaders like Manmohan Singh are on the radar of opposition. Recently, two books have been released which has brought him under controversy. At the end of Dr. Singh’s second tenure, his image is completely deteriorating. It is indeed hard to believe that an eminent economist surrendered before someone. The essence of sound democratic practice is real and on-going consultations among colleagues before important decisions are taken are important. It is quite right in pointing out that the Manmohan Singh government established an exemplary precedent in democratic leadership. Unthinking people applaud a so-called ‘strong leader’ without reflecting what damage such a person can inflict on democracy itself. Other than fascists, even leftists have made the same unforgivable mistake and paid heavily for it, as Russians did under Stalin. Churchill’s memoirs and Barbara Tuchman’s history of World War I both show how the cabinets of so-called great democracies bestowed decision-making into the hands of one man. Baru’s book is the work of a populist journalist and not that of a serious political theorist. The PM being subservient to Sonia is one of the worst legacies that destroyed the office of the prime minister of India. This was a relationship of indecisiveness, large scale of corruption, and of making Sonia/Rahul look good at the expense of everyone else. The author has used euphemisms. There is absolutely no misunderstanding about this master-servant relationship in the minds of anyone. In fact, most people have not found anything new in what Mr. Baru “revealed”. Unless the Congress manages to change or rewrite history to make a certain family look good as it has in the past, this legacy will be considered one of the darkest in Indian history. Why justify it?

After Manmohan Singh’s recent hullabaloo and Rahul Gandhi’s utter failure, in spite of being matured and sensible leader, has damaged the prospects for Congress. Sonia seems to be the most hated politician of this country at the moment. Congress hardly has any senior leader who has been largely accepted by the people. Though there are many capable leaders, but Congress is facing leadership crises. After a long time, BJP has got a leader like Narendra Modi, who can actually infuse life into his dead party. Even after so much hype, there is no guarantee that Modi will take the party to the power of corridor in the centre.

On the other hand, if you go to rural India, most of the senior citizens are loyal to hand and still votes on Indira Gandhi’s name. They don’t know the contender but they vote because of Indira Gandhi. Priyanka’s political rallies gather much crowd because people see her resemblance in Priyanka. Ever since Priyanka Gandhi hit her teenage in the mid-1980s, she looked like her late grandmother. When Priyanka sports those typical cotton sarees and curly hairstyle, she exactly looks like Indira, and perhaps this is nostalgia for those traditional Congress voters. Priyanka bore the most stunning resemblance ever, to her grandmother. If Congress gives a strongest push by bringing Priyanka Gandhi to the forefront of the party in such crises, Congress may see some ray of hope for her party.

Chavan credits Pawar for Congress-NCP’s ‘cohesive’ campaign

Chavan-PawarMaharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan credited NCP chief Sharad Pawar for the Congress-NCP’s “cohesive and united” poll campaign and expressed confidence that the ruling alliance will better its tally of 25 seats in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.

“I think the credit must be given to Pawar and his team. We, on our part, have realised that we must be cohesive to fight this election together, without bringing in our differences, which occur when we fight local elections,” Chavan said.

“This time, I think, in a very long, long time, the Congress party is fighting as one man. Out of the total 48 constituencies, there are some issues in three or four constituencies, although nothing very serious which cannot be addressed,” he said.

“We are still trying to make sure that people work together and cohesively. We (Congress and NCP) have been touring each others’ constituencies, holding joint meetings.

“Pawar joined the meeting addressed by Soniaji. I have been going to NCP candidates’ constituencies. He has been coming to our constituencies. I think we have projected a very united and cohesive image,” Chavan said.

Asked about his projection as far as the Congress-NCP tally in the state in this Lok Sabha election is concerned, he said, “I have never given any prediction of numbers in any of the elections which I have led. So I won’t venture into numbers, although we have our internal assessment.”

“From the results which I have got from the field, I think we will certainly be able to better our tally,” he said.

“There is a challenge (from opposition Shiv Sena-BJP-led alliance). I won’t use the word threat,” the senior Congress leader said

“Also, the fact that there have been instances of corruption exposed, the birth of the Aam Aadmi Party, the agitation by Anna Hazare–that is one challenge,” he said.

“The technique used by (BJP’s prime ministerial nominee) Narendra Modi, of saturating media with advertisements, is another challenge. No challenge in an election can be taken lightly. The Congress party would not like to take it lightly,” the chief minister said.

Asked if the “Modi wave” will benefit BJP, Chavan said, “I don’t see any Modi wave at all. Because there is no substance in it, but a lot of hype. People were carted to the meetings to create a large crowd.

“It is just like, when a film star comes, people go and attend the rally but that doesn’t get converted into votes. So I don’t think Modi’s rallies will get converted into votes,” Chavan said.

“Modi has offered nothing concrete. There is no alternate vision at all. He feebly tried to project the Gujarat model as the vision. Even an opportunity to project a strong, rock- solid vision in the manifesto was squandered away because of internal bickering,” he said.

“They (BJP) are not clear whether to put the Hindutva agenda in the forefront or not. The way the senior BJP leadership was sidetracked completely…,I think there is an ideological vacuum within that party.

“BJP and Modi have chosen to ignore their oldest ally Shiv Sena, by not inviting the Sena leaders to share the stage, (and also) allowing a secret understanding with MNS behind Sena’s back.

“They seem to be telling MNS that you (MNS) may go ahead and contest and defeat Shiv Sena candidates but don’t defeat our (BJP) candidates,” Chavan said.

“I think there is a huge question mark on the relevance and credibility of MNS. Also, how much more insults will Shiv Sena tolerate?” the chief minister said.

So, I think they are where they are. There is a space perhaps to protect the interests of the “sons of the soil”, the Marathi people and that’s why they will get some support. But as a political party, as an alternate formation which can take over the governance of Maharashtra, they have failed,” he said.

Nashik civic chief transferred for alleged poll code violation

sanjayNashik Municipal Corporation Commissioner Sanjay Khandare has been transferred on the recommendation of the Election Commission of India following complaints against him for allegedly taking some decisions in favour of a political party.

Khandare was transferred last evening on the recommendation of ECI, which received complaints against him from corporators for allegedly favouring the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, which presently rules the NMC, official sources said.

District Collector V B Patil confirmed the transfer of NMC commissioner last evening.

Tribal development commissioner Sanjeev Kumar has been asked to take additional charge as NMC commissioner.

There were complaints of alleged violation of the model code of conduct against Khandare in view of the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, NMC sources said.

Khandare could not be contacted for comments in the matter.

HC acquits man convicted of wife’s murder on weak evidence

Finding discrepancies in the dying declarations given by a housewife to her father, police and doctor, the Bombay High Court has quashed and set aside the life sentence imposed on her husband for setting her ablaze as a result of which she eventually died in hospital.

In separate dying declarations given by Vijaya Shelar to her father and police, she had stated that her husband Machindra suspected her character and thus on March 24, 2004, he and his aunt had poured kerosene on her and set her afire.

However, in another dying declaration to a doctor who had treated her burn injuries sustained in the incident, Vijaya had stated that she was set afire by her husband. In this statement, Vijaya had not mentioned about her husband’s aunt also being involved in setting her on fire.

“We thus find that there is a total variance in respect of number of accused who are alleged to set Vijaya ablaze,” noted a bench headed by Justice P V Hardas.

“We find that acceptance of dying declaration given by Vijaya to police and oral dying declaration made to Vitthal (her father) would necessarily falsify the dying declaration recorded by Dr. Sinha. Similarly, acceptance of dying declaration made by Vijaya to Dr Sinha would falsify and label the dying declaration given to police and the oral dying declaration made to Vitthal as false,” the judges observed.

“It would be wholly impermissible for the court in such a situation to pick and choose any one dying declaration for basing the conviction. In our opinion, therefore, no reliance can be placed on any of the dying declaration. The appellant, in our considered opinion, therefore would be entitled to be given the benefit of doubt, the bench said in an order on April 10.

The court noted that Vijaya had given Dr Sinha the history of the appellant (her husband) pouring kerosene on her and setting her ablaze. Unfortunately, the disclosure or the oral dying declaration made by Vijaya to Dr Sinha though recorded in the medical case papers were not exhibited and proved by the prosecution.

“Though Dr Sinha had stated that he had produced original case papers, yet the original case papers were not exhibited during the recording of the evidence of Dr Sinha,” the judges observed.

Accordingly, the criminal appeal filed by Machindra was allowed by the judges and the conviction and sentence of the appellant was quashed and set aside. He was acquitted of the offence with which he was charged and convicted.

The court also ordered that the fine paid by the appellant for his conviction be returned to him and Machindra be released from jail if he was not wanted in any other case.

A Pune sessions court had convicted Machindra on June 30, 2004 on the basis of three dying declarations given by the victim. However, his aunt was acquitted as no evidence was found against her.

Train derails; cancellations, diversions on Konkan Railway route

A goods train derailed on Konkan Railway route near Ukashi station in Maharashtra this Monday, disrupting rail traffic.

Four-five bogies of the goods train derailed in the tunnel near Ukashi railway station, between Sangameshwar and Nivsar at around 8.15 AM, Konkan Railway Corporation Limited’s (KRCL) Public Relation Manager Baban Ghatge said, adding no one was injured.

Three trains were cancelled and around ten diverted after the mishap.

Ukashi is about 19 kms away from Ratnagiri district in Maharashtra.

The work for restoration of the track is underway on war footing. According to initial estimates, it may take more than 10 hours to restore it as the derailed section is inside the tunnel, official sources said.

Following the derailment, the KRCL cancelled three trains including Mandovi Express and Konkan Kanya, which were supposed to head towards Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) from Margao.

The up and down trains of Matsyagandha Express, running between Mangalore to Mumbai’s Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT), have also been cancelled, the spokesman said.

Due to the disruption on the route, around ten trains have been diverted through Panvel, Pune, Miraj, Londa and Margao, bypassing the affected section of the track.

Besides, the Thiruvananthapuram Netravati Express leaving from Mumbai CST, Nizamuddin-Thiruvananthpuram Rajdhani Express leaving from Delhi, LTT-Kochuveli (near Thiruvananthapuram) Garib Rath Express leaving from Mumbai and CST-Mangalore Mangalore Express leaving from Mumbai were diverted.

Similarly, up trains including Ernakulam-LTT AC Duranto Express, Ernakulum-Ajmer Marusagar Express, Mangalore-CST Express, Kuchuveli-LTT Express, Tirunelveli-Hapa Express, Kochuveli-Chandigarh Kerala Sampark Kranti Express were also diverted through Margao, Londa, Pune and Panvel.

The KRCL has also arranged for ferrying passengers between Sangameshwar and Ratnagiri station for Thiruvananthpuram-LTT Netravati Express, Ernakulum-Nizamuddin Mangala Express and Amritsar-Kochuveli Express trains. The passengers of these trains would be accommodated in other trains going to the destinations.

The authorities also announced that the Sawantwadi-Diva passenger and Dadar-Margao-Dadar Janashatabdi Express have been partially cancelled.

Congress should get Rahul Gandhi married instead of attacking Narendra Modi: Shiv Sena

The Shiv Sena has launched a scathing attack on the Congress saying that the grand old party should first get its vice president Rahul Gandhi married rather than commenting on Bharatiya Janata Party prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi’s marital status.

Criticising the ruling government for repeatedly throwing barbs at Modi over his marital status, the Shiv Sena in its mouthpiece ‘Saamana’ said that those who think that they can get Modi involved in a legal battle on his marriage life are foolish.

In its editorial, the Shiv Sena questioned Congress and asked whether attacking Modi on the particular issue will bring down inflation and bring back the black money siphoned off in the coal blocks allocation scam.

Throwing its weight behind the Gujarat Chief Minister, the Shiv Sena said that Modi and Jashodaben were married at tender age and they mutually agreed to live separately and the BJP’s PM candidate became a RSS pracharak.

While filing his nomination papers for the Vadodara Lok Sabha seat in Gujarat, Modi had for the first time mentioned his spouse’s name as Jashodaben under that column.

So far, Modi used to leave the column of spouse which is to be filled in an affidavit as blank. He had kept the column as blank in 2012 Assembly elections as well.

However, for the 2014 Lok Sabha election affidavit, in the column where he has to declare assets in the name of his wife, Modi has written that he has no information on it.

Modi is also contesting election from Varanasi where he is challenging Aam Aadmi Party candidate Arvind Kejriwal and Congress’ local MLA Ajay Rai.

Bombay HC Rejects Bail Pleas of Three in Naxal Funding Case

The Bombay High Court has rejected the bail pleas of three members of radical music group Kabir Kala Manch (KKM), arrested for their alleged role in supporting and funding Naxal activities in the state.

Justice A R Joshi on April 11 rejected the bail applications of Sachin Mali, Sagar Gorkhe and Ramesh Gaichor.

The trio was arrested along with another member Sheetal Sathe in April last year after they courted arrest outside the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly.

They were booked under the stringent provisions of Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and various sections of the Indian Penal Code including criminal conspiracy.

A case was registered in 2011 against 15 persons including KKM members for alleged involvement with the banned organisation Communist Party of India (Maoist). While seven persons were arrested in 2010, Mali, Gorkhe, Gaichor and others were declared absconding accused.

According to the trio, they are cultural activists who take up social causes like poverty, corruption, superstition, gender discrimination and so on.

The High Court, however, refused to accept their contention and refused to release them on bail.
