Business of politics

Business-politicsMerchandise of Congress, BJP and AAP has become an instant hit among people.

Businessmen and online retailing firms are cashing in on the Lok Sabha election fever. They are selling various products like flags, pen, party caps, neck scarf, party badge with names of the party symbol printed on it. Merchandise of Congress, BJP and AAP are selling like hot cakes on e-commerce websites like Amazon.com. Most of these products are available for 10$. Since the Lok Sabha election is just round the corner, there has been huge demand for Modi’s face mask and tea cup.

The following slogans are printed on T-shirts: India needs Modi-fications. AAP jaisa koi meri Dilli me aaye, toh baat ban jaye. Be the change you want to see. Har hath shakthi, har hath tarakki. Businessmen are keen to cash in on the popularity of Narendra Modi and Arvind Kejriwal. They have started selling wall clocks, cushion covers, coffee mugs, posters, coasters, note books, laptop skins, mouse pads, T-shirts and such other merchandise with political pictures and messages. This time Modi has emerged as the most popular leader as his merchandise is selling more in comparison to his opponents.

There are BJP and Congress bindis which looks almost identical as either lotus or hand is printed on it. BJP and Congress mangalsutras, jholas, projector pens, laptop and mobile stickers are selling in the poll season. Most buyers, in the age group of 18-40, are professionals, upwardly mobile, and Internet-savvy

BJP tops the sales charts, followed by AAP, but AAP sales took a hit after Kejriwal resigned as Delhi chief minister. The sites also provide a platform for fan messages
Vishal Sharma owner of an online retail store says, “We have observed that both AAP and NaMo are a huge hit. AAP designs reflect on a corruption-free India and involvement of the common man in politics. For NaMo, it is an agenda of development and social prosperity.”

Both AAP and BJP are exploring new technologies to connect with the voters. On the other hand, Congress has lagged behind these parties and has been adopting the traditional mode of campaigning. AAP is communicating with its fan base on the Net and is even getting donations online.

“My store has been witnessing huge footfalls during the election season. People have been visiting my shop to purchase the merchandise of BJP in large numbers. The products are not expensive and can be purchased by middle and lower middle class people.”

On the other hand women voters have been expressing their support for BJP by purchasing bangles, hair clips, umbrellas, jholas and mangalsutras.

Ramesh Shah a business man from Borivali said, “I am Narendra Modi’s fan. I have visited Gujarat several times and found that he has been responsible for the state’s development. I am following his speeches and also support his agenda.”

Vishal Sodi a FY BSc student from Kandivali said, “Nowadays youth are more aware about the political incidents happening in the country. They want change and will definitely come forward to cast their votes. I will be purchasing Modi’s caps and endorse my support for him.”

Under Narendra Modi, there is no scope for debate, dissent: Chavan

cm-chavMaharashtra Chief Minister Prithivraj Chavan, in a searing attack on Narendra Modi, on Tuesday said the BJP PM nominee’s style of functioning has left Corporate India worried as it leaves no room for debate and dissent.

“Corporate India has realised that under Modi, there is no scope for debate and dissent. People of India have realised that Modi’s leadership is dictatorial style,” Chavan said.

According to him, people have realised that the upcoming General Elections were a battle of ideologies and which will decide the future of the country.

Criticising BJP for delaying its manifesto, Chavan said if Modi had his way, there would have been no manifesto.

“His concept is I am the party and I am the manifesto. There is no need for discussions and deliberations.”

Hitting out at main Opposition party for its “ideological confusion”, Chavan said a section of BJP wanted to focus on development issues and keep the issues of Uniform Civil Code, Ram temple and Article 370 on the back burner. While another section wanted to highlight them.

The Maharashtra CM alleged that BJP has used the TV medium and social media for its marketing and there was nothing worthwhile in its manifesto and policies.

“There is no mention of which UPA policies they would scrap or strengthen if they come to power. BJP was just waiting for Congress to declare their manifesto and have indulged only in ‘copy and paste’,” Chavan alleged.

Speaking about campaigning for the first phase of the Lok Sabha elections at 10 seats in Vidarbha region, which is going to polls on April 10, Chavan said the response to electioneering by Congress-NCP leaders has been good.

“Party cadre morale is high and we expect to do well,” he said.

Claiming that BJP and MNS were in a secret understanding to defeat Shiv Sena, Chavan said, “The internal dynamics of Opposition parties is such that BJP wants to go with one component of Shiv Sena and the original is getting a raw deal. It is up to the original, how it deals with the insults heaped by the Modi-led BJP.”

The Maharashtra Chief Minister described as “petty minded” the decision of Gujarat government’s co-operation department to issue notice to Mehsana Milk Federation which acted in good faith to provide cattle feed to help Maharashtra suffering from drought.

“The action taken against the co-operative society was saddening,” he said.

Also, Chavan justified withdrawal of Congress candidate Rajendra Gavit from Palghar, saying that decision was taken to avoid division of secular votes in a triangular fight.

“Sitting Palghar MP Baliram Jadhav has supported Congress-led UPA and we wanted Jadhav’s Bahujan Vikas Agadhi to merge with us. First BVA leader Hitendra Thakur agreed and later backtracked. It’s true we put up Gavit as our candidate but alliance talks can continue even after filing of nomination,” he said.

Speaking about resentment of senior Congress leader AR Antulay over swapping of Raigad seat, Chavan said he had met Antulay and apprised him of the changed political equations in the district. “We had a good discussion,” he said.

Spot boy arrested for raping woman

rape1A 22-year-old spot boy has been arrested for allegedly raping a married woman at her residence in Aarey Colony in suburban Goregaon, police said on Tuesday.

Accused Saddam Khan, a slum dweller in Aarey Colony works in the Film City, raped the woman on Thursday when she was alone at home in the same area, they said adding he was arrested.

The victim claimed that the accused had barged into her house before assaulting her. He then gagged, raped her and walked away after threatening to kill her if she revealed the incident to anybody.

Traumatised, the victim resisted apprising her husband, who also works in the Film City about the suffering she faced due to the incident for three days.

However, she garnered courage on Sunday, broke down before her husband, narrating the incident following which the matter was brought before the Aarey Sub police station.

After recording the victim’s statement, accused Khan was traced and arrested yesterday, said Uttam More, Senior Inspector, Aarey Sub police station.

A molestation case was registered against Khan earlier in the police station, they said.

Modi wave will help BJP win 35-36 seats in Maha: Tawde

Maha-TawdeThe “Modi wave” across Maharashtra will increase BJP’s votes by 12 to 14 per cent and help the saffron party-led alliance to secure 35-36 seats in the Lok Sabha elections, a senior state BJP leader has said.

“The BJP-led alliance is doing extremely well in all parts of Maharashtra and it will raise its tally of 21 (12 BJP, 9 Sena) of 2009 to 35-36 seats (out of 48 seats) in May,” said Leader of Opposition in the state Legislative Council Vinod Tawde.

Tawde said he has been touring the state and has gathered an impression that the BJP-led alliance is on the “verge of ending on a winning note.” Barring Milind Deora (the sitting MP and Congress candidate from Mumbai South seat), all alliance constituencies are on a winning track, he claimed. Acknowledging that NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal is posing threat to the BJP-alliance candidate in Nashik, he said a clear picture of Pune seat will emerge in a day or two. Dismissing any threat from the Aam Aadmi Party, Tawde said it no longer looks like a common man’s party.

Mayank Gandhi (AAP leader) in Mumbai is a builder and Anjali Damania is from a share broker’s family having assets worth crores of rupees, he said. “Are they Aam Aadmi?” he mockingly asked, saying that the only face in AAP was its chief Arvind Kejriwal, but his Mumbai visit exposed his “indisciplined style”.

“The way his rally was taken out, his ride in train and auto rickshaw. People of Mumbai were disturbed by his visit”, the BJP leader said.

When asked about high profile leaders in Vidarbha like Nitin Gadkari of BJP in Nagpur and Praful Patel of NCP in Bhandara-Gondia constituency, Tawde said Gadkari’s candidature has been well taken by people.

“He (Gadkari) is going to win by one lakh votes,” he claimed.

Admitting that Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s meeting with Delhi’s Shahi Imam has helped tilting of votes in favour of Congress, he said, however, Gadkari is above caste and religion politics.

Dismissing rumours of an alleged secret understanding between Nana Patole of BJP and Praful Patel, he said, “This time it is ‘Bhai’ (Patel) versus ‘Bhau’ (Patole).”

Patole is a fighter and everyone knows politics of Patel, he said alleging that the latter is attempting to cash in on Modi’s popularity and misleading the voters.

He was referring to a book showcasing the work done by Patel which carried his photograph with Modi at a function.

For Shinde, fourth term likely to be a cakewalk

Even though controversy dogged him since he took over as Union Home Minister for making some questionable statements, Sushil Kumar Shinde looks well set to romp home to a fourth Lok Sabha term from this traditional Congress bastion where the BJP challenge appears insipid despite the perceived “Modi wave”.

Shinde, 73, not particularly known for verbal discretion — who made a recent statement on “crushing” media, the one on Saffron terror camps, the banter that people will forget “coalgate” just as the “Bofors” got erased from their memory and his provocative jibe at Jaya Bachchan reminding her that she was in Parliament and should desist from Bollywood histrionics–does not seem to carry his Delhi baggage when he lands in his home constituency in Western Maharashtra.

An avowed Congress high command loyalist, who never fought shy of playing the Dalit card for climbing up the political ladder with an ever smiling face, Shinde’s meteoric rise from a courtroom peon to the highest corridors of power has been truly remarkable for his journey from Maharashtra Chief Minister to the Union Home Ministry.

This time, Shinde who has just returned to his home turf to up the ante of his campaign, is being promoted in his absence by his MLA daughter Praniti and wife Ujwala.

BJP has fielded Sharad Bansode (50), who fought and lost against Shinde in the last 2009 Lok Sabha poll.

Solapur constituency, comprising urban and rural segments, goes to polls on April 17.

Bansode, considered popular among youths with his creation of a patriotic platform in the city for propagation of thoughts of freedom fighter Veer Savarkar, is however, not expected to penetrate the grass root vote bank of Congress that has formed the support base of Shinde.

Confident about Shinde’s victory, Congress supporters of the Home minister say, “He has contributed a lot to Solapur’s development by upgrading MIDC facilities and establishing NPTC power grid to spur industrial growth in various sectors as well as improving connectivity by implementing various highway construction projects for a better access to the city.”

However, questioning Shinde’s work as MP, Bansode says, “Despite holding high office in Delhi, the Congress leader has failed to fulfil his promises of Solapur’s development and acute water supply problem.”

Four acquitted in murder case for lack of evidence

Four persons, including a woman’s husband, father-in-law and two other relatives, have been acquitted by a local court for her murder and harassment for want of substantial evidence.

Thane Additional Sessions Judge A S Waghwase in a recent order observed that the prosecution failed to prove the charges under sections 498(A) (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty), 306 (abetment of suicide), 304?B (offence of dowry death), 302 (murder) and 201 r/w 34 of IPC against the accused persons.

Additional Public Prosecutor Buleshwar Hinge told the court that the accused – Vikram Bharat Bhoir (28- victim’s husband), Jaywant Baburao Bhoir (42 – relative), Bharat Bhaskar Bhoir (52 – father-in-law) and Vidhyadhar Bharat Bhoir (25 -brother-in-law) – were residents of Balkum area of Thane.

Vikram had married Archana in February 2003. After some time, the four accused allegedly subjected her to cruelty while demanding around Rs 20,000 for business. The victim had informed her parents also about it.

The prosecution said that on February 23, 2007, Archana had called her mother to say that the four threatened her with dire consequences if their demand was not met.

The next day, her family was informed that Archana fell in the bathroom and suffered head injury.

When the victim’s parents reached her house, they found her dead. When the body was being readied for the final rites, Archana’s relatives saw a ligature mark around her neck.

Upon detailed inquiry, the victim’s husband said that Archana had committed suicide.

‘Kill those who have done injustice to you,’ Raj Thackeray tells farmers

Targeting the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party over farmer suicides in Maharashtra, Raj Thackeray on Monday said instead of taking their own lives, farmers should “kill those who have done injustice” to them.

“Don’t commit suicide. It is not a solution to your problems. If at all you want to die, first kill those who have done injustice to you,” Mr. Thackeray told farmers at a rally in Yavatmal in Maharashtra.

He was campaigning for Raju Patil Raje, his Maharashtra Navnirman Sena’s only candidate running for Parliament, from the Vidarbha region.

Mr. Thackeray read out a purported suicide note by a farmer urging people not to vote for the ruling Congress-NCP combine, saying they had pushed him over the edge.

“For the past 67 years, elections continue to be fought on four issues – roads, energy, water and employment. But all these issues have still remained unresolved. In such a case, we don’t want any election at all. In villages, country liquor is available in plenty, whereas drinking water is not. It is the tragedy of our system,” said the MNS chief.

He criticised Congress and NCP leaders for visiting only those places affected by the recent hailstorm, where their parties had a strong base.

Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and Sharad Pawar visit only their respective party areas, affected by hailstorms and politicise the issue,” he said.

Google tool provides information about Lok Sabha candidates

Popular search engine Google today announced the launch of a new tool that allows voters an easy access to relevant information about Lok Sabha candidates in each constituency.

The tool, ‘Know Your Candidates’, will give people easy access to relevant information about political candidates contesting from their constituency and their incumbent Member of Parliament, Google said in a release here.

It integrates publicly available information sourced from organizations such as Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), PRS Legislative Research and Liberty Institute India.

“In the last five months, we have made a concerted effort to provide our users a one stop destination for all their information needs for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.”

“With the launch of this tool, we have added all the important information of the contesting candidates with the help of groups such as ADR and PRS Legislative Research,” said Google India VP and Managing Director Rajan Anandan.

The application will provide information for each sitting Lok Sabha MP and contesting candidates such as their disclosed educational background, financial details and social media presence (wherever available).

Mapped onto Google Maps interface, citizens will be able to find the information by using pin codes of their area or by zooming on their locality on the map.

The tool will be updated regularly to provide information about all candidates as they get finalized and will be made available at least a week before the voting day in each constituency, the release added.

Police opposes former billiards champion Ferreira’s bail plea

The Mumbai police’s Economic Offences Wing (EOW) objected to an anticipatory pre-arrest bail plea filed by former world billiards champion Michael Ferreira in connection with the Rs. 425-crore QNet case.

On January 22 the court had directed Ferreira to appear before the investigation agency, which he had complied with and was grilled for four days by EOW sleuths.

“We filed our reply in the case and objected to his pre-arrest bail application,” said special public prosecutor Pradeep Gharat.

The court was told that Ferreira was associated with Qnet even after knowing that it was a scam, he said.

“We also told the court that Ferreira made crores of rupees from the scam,” Gharat said.

So far, the EOW has arrested nine QNet team leaders for allegedly duping investors by offering to sell products like magnetic disks, herbal products and holiday schemes through fraudulent practices.

QNet has also been accused of using the banned binary pyramid business model for multi-level marketing (MLM) schemes to entice investors. The accused have been charged with cheating and forgery under relevant sections of the Prize, Chits and Money Circulation Schemes (Banning) Act 1978.

HC to hear Syedna successor case on April 29

The Bombay High Court will on April 29 hear a suit filed by Khuzaima Qutbuddin, who claims to be the 53rd Dai al-Mutlaq and head of the Dawoodi Bohra community, seeking to be declared as the Syedna.

The suit was mentioned before Justice Gautam Patel today who posted it for hearing on ad-interim relief on April 29.

Qutbuddin, who had filed the suit last week, had sought interim relief that Mufaddal Saifuddin, the second son of the late Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin, be restrained from holding himself or doing any acts, deeds or things as the 53rd Dai al-Mutlaq of the community.

Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin passed away on January 17 this year at the age of 102.

Qutbuddin, who is the half-brother of the late Syedna, alleged that his nephew’s succession as Syedna was false.

The matter was placed before Justice Patel after another single judge of the high court Justice S J Kathawalla recused himself from hearing the case as he had appeared for the late Syedna in the past in another matter.

Qutbuddin’s family had earlier claimed that they had repeatedly tried to resolve the issue internally.

“We even invited him (Mufaddal) for a debate and establish the rightful claim of nass (succession). But all the attempts have been ignored and rebuffed by Shehzada Mufaddal Saifuddin,” the family had said earlier in a press note.

Qutbuddin claimed that the late Syedna had chosen him his Mazoon (deputy) and secretly appointed him as his successor 50 years ago.
