The elusive manifesto

It is a pity that the BJP was unable to release its manifesto in advance when its prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi has been enunciating his various programmes during public meetings from time to time. Baba Ramdev was also assisting him in this matter. Election manifesto need not be a very comprehensive and it can include vital points only.

The most important aspect is providing adequate drinking water to the citizens through an effective water management plan encompassing water conservation, rain water harvesting, curtailing wastage and recycling grey water for gardening purposes etc; by ensuring effective participation through expert technologists on the subject. For every ministry, there has to be an expert consultative group and they must be listened to. No one is talking about curtailing human population and reducing the number of big private cars. Manufacturing sector has to be strengthened by harnessing efforts of our industrialists and businessmen.

How will you provide jobs unless the manufacturing sector is revived? Foreign collaboration should be sought, if needed in this matter. We have good indigenous talent as is being reported in the matter of production of railway coaches. The only way forward is to develop this sector so that it can absorb more youth instead of making them rely only on the government jobs. We must develop employable skills among youth and goad our industrialists to set up industries.

“Hum rajneeti par bahut samay barbad kar rahen hain, utpadakta par jor nahin de rahe”. Corporate houses should be asked to adopt a cluster of rural areas and develop them as model villages. Subrata Roy, Vijay Mallya, Shilpa Shetty, Neeta Ambani etc; should be asked to adopt villages and not merely bid for IPL players. Government must not allow any NGO unless they are engaged in rural development, child development with orientation and burning desire to work in the villages. It’s the duty of planning commission. They are not meant to churn out bogus data and waste public money.

If Narendra Modi becomes prime minister he must not include Lal Krishna Advani, Venkaiah Naidu, Murli Manohar Joshi Shatrughan Sinha and Uma Bharti in the ministry. Some ministries should be allotted to eminent personalities like Baba Ramdev (Health), Ratan Tata or even Mukesh Ambani (Industry). Why should only an MP compulsorily become a minister? This is the biggest aspect responsible for rising corruption. You are a public representative, not necessarily an expert in a field. Let the key ministries be headed by persons possessing good experience and credibility.

Three reasons to hang three accused

hang-three-accused Public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam says that convicts of Shakti Mills rape case deserved death penalty.

In a landmark judgement the sessions court awarded death penalty to three convicts for gang-raping a photojournalist at the Shakti Mills Compound. It’s the first instance when section 376 (e) has been applied on persons convicted for heinous crimes like gang-rape. The miscreants Vijay Jadhav, Kasim Bengali and Salim Ansari convicted under a new legal provision that punishes repeat offenders with life term or death sentence. The laws were amended after the brutal gang rape of young student in Delhi in December, 2012.

Public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam said, “Miscreants had initially raped a telephone operator and later they raped a photojournalist. The death penalty awarded to them is justified. After raping the girl rapists had also laughed at her. One of the miscreant said we are devil minded people and nobody dared to catch us. The criminals had called their accomplices to the spot.”
The court also awarded a life term for the fourth convict in the case. “The three repeat offenders have also been given life sentence for unnatural sex,” added Nikam. Welcoming the court’s decision, Nikam said that rape is another form of murder.
“Any leniency in this case would be a travesty of justice. Life term will not be justice, it will be inadequate,” said a Sessions court in Mumbai.

The section 376(e) (repeat offence of rape), which was introduced after the 2012 Delhi gang-rape case, attracts the maximum penalty of death. This is the first time in the country the section has been applied.
Section 376(e) doesn’t constitute any independent or separate offence but provides for enhancement of the sentence for those who are previously convicted, the court said.
The group’s crimes were exposed after the 23-year-old photojournalist’s rape in August last, which sparked a fresh wave of outrage across the country, months after the Delhi gang-rape.

The photographer was on assignment at the mill with a male colleague when five men tied him up and took turns to assault her, holding a broken bottle to her head. The attackers were found guilty of offences that included showing pornography to her and forcing her to perform similar acts, stripping her, and destroying evidence.

The phone operator came forward after reading about the photographer’s ordeal.

The police describe the attackers as unemployed school dropouts and neighbours say they were a gang known for petty theft and drinking in the area.

Meru-Cab-looksMumbai-based Meru Cab is aiming at a turnover of Rs 600 crore this fiscal and plans to start the radio taxi services in Goa and Kolkata within six months.
Meru Cab, part of the V-Link Fleet Solutions, is looking at rolling out services in 10 cities within a year including in Uttar Pradesh, where the government has come out with a favourable policy.

“For Meru, we are expecting a revenue of Rs 600 crore this financial year 2014-15. We have been growing at 35 per cent Compounded Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) for last five years and will continue with that,” Meru Cabs Group CEO Siddhartha Pahwa said.

In the 2013-14 fiscal ended March 31, Meru had clocked revenues of Rs. 450 crore.

On expanding the network, Pahwa said: “We clearly believe that Kolkata and Goa are two areas where we would start services in next six months.

“We believe that there are at least 10 more cities such as Kolkata, Chandigarh, Goa, where good quality radio taxi services are required and we would be launching there in next 12 months.”

Apart from this, the group today launched Genie Cabs in the NCR region, an economical city transportation service with hatchback cars — Ford Figo, Toyota Liva, Tata Indica Vista and Maruti Ritz.

According to Pahwa, the Uttar Pradesh government has recently come up with schemes for radio taxi services and Meru is evaluating starting the services in Lucknow and Kanpur.

On whether Meru will seek additional investments from PE funds for expansion, Pahwa said it is a cash positive company and generating enough reserve every year to fund growth.

“We have private equity fund India Value Fund, which has invested for us in the last seven years. They hold a significant majority stake in our share holders. And any further capital is required, IVF is ready to contribute funds in this business for future growth possibilities,” he added.

Genie Cabs would charge Rs 16 per km – with a base fare of Rs 100 for the first 5 km. It would be 30 per cent lesser than Meru.

“Gennie is very specific for daily commute use. The whole intent is to democratise the daily commute on daily basis,” Pahwa said.

The company will start the services with 100 cars from tomorrow and in the next six months would reach about 1,000 cars. Meru has already launched Genie Cabs in Hyderabad, Bangalore and Pune.

AAP attacks BJP leaders for double speak on Babri masjid demolition

Attacking the BJP for double speak over Babri mosque demolition, AAP said that its leaders facing charges in the case have said one thing in public and completely contradicted themselves in the court.
Attacking the BJP for double speak over Babri mosque demolition, AAP today said that its leaders facing charges in the case have said one thing in public and completely contradicted themselves in the court.
“After 1992, the successive Congress-led and BJP-led governments for obvious reasons have attempted to brush the whole conspiracy under the carpet”, AAP said in a statement.
“Babri Masjid demolition is a glaring example of the BJP doublespeak. Its leaders who had a direct hand in the demolition and are facing charges in a criminal trial, have said one thing in their public statements and completely contradicted themselves in the court,” it said.
A news portal, which carried out a sting, claimed that the The 1992 Babri Mosque demolition was an “act of planned sabotage” and not by frenzied mob of Hindu outfits. The “confessions” named BJP leaders L K Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, Uma Bharti and others for “secretly planning” out the demolition in an elaborate way.
The party said that sting operation confirmed the role of BJP and Sangh Parivar in Babri demolition.
“The sting operation has confirmed the widespread belief that the demolition was a pre-planned conspiracy by the various affiliates of the Sangh Parivar and top BJP leadership had a direct role in the entire incident,” the statement added.
AAP also attacked the Congress for allegedly helping the Sangh Parivar in the act.
“It also nails the Congress, whose central government led by the then Prime Minister the late PV Narasimha Rao, was not only aware about the conspiracy to demolish the Mosque, but also appears to have helped the Sangh parivar in its nefarious designs by abetting the unpardonable crime.
“The Congress, which has always avoided answering its role in the demolition, should come out clean on the role of its central government in 1992,” the statement added.

Modi attacks Congress over women’s safety

BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi Friday attacked Congress president Sonia Gandhi over the issue of women’s safety in the country.

Raking up the Dec 16 gang-rape in Delhi, Modi said the Congress has done nothing to ensure women’s safety and Sonia Gandhi, despite being a women, is misleading other women.

“You have announced Rs 1,000 crore as the Nirbhaya fund and said that this money will be used for the daughters of this country. Despite announcing the fund, you did not spend even a single rupee from it,” Modi said at a rally in Maharashtra’s Chandrapur district.

Modi said promises made by the Congress about women’s safety do not look good.

“There is not even a single BJP-ruled state among the top 10 states where the maximum atrocities against women happened,” said Modi.

He also brought up the issue of a Congress women party worker in Maharashtra’s Latur city, who recently went missing. She was later found dead and a party member was arrested in this case, said Modi.

“If members of your own party are not safe, how will you ensure the safety of this country,” Modi asked.

High Court rejects bail plea of ailing Sadhvi Pragya in Malegaon blast case

The Bombay High Court refused to grant bail on medical grounds, to 2008 Malegaon bomb blast accused Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur who has been in custody for five and a half years in connection with her role as a conspirator in the crime.

A division bench dismissed an appeal filed by her against a Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) court order, refusing bail to her on medical grounds.

“Taking into consideration, the material available on record, it cannot be said that the appellant is not guilty of the offence for which she is charged. The material clearly indicates that the appellant is a conspirator and had actively helped the co-accused by providing a motorcycle for explosion of a bomb at Malegaon,” a bench headed by Justice P V Hardas said.

“We are of the considered opinion that a strong prima facie case against the appellant exists, on the basis of material available on record and the same is sufficient to deny bail to her,” the bench said.
The judges said that they did not find the impugned order passed by the Special MCOCA Court judge on September 25, 2012, to suffer from any legal infirmity.
Senior Counsel U A Lalit argued that the appellant suffers from serious ailments and produced before the court a medical report dated February 4, 2014, issued by the Jawaharlal Nehru Cancer Hospital & Research Centre, Bhopal.

National Investigating Agency Counsel Rohini Salian submitted that government hospitals were well equipped to provide all sorts of medical help to the appellant and that even at this juncture, the Sadhvi is being provided with the best medical facilities available in government hospitals.

“Therefore we see no reason to accede to the request of the learned senior counsel, that on the ground of ill health or for want of medical treatment, the appellant needs to be released on bail,” the judges said.

Four held for buying stolen jewellery; cash, ornaments seized

Four persons, including a father-son duo, were arrested for allegedly buying stolen gold jewellery and Rs. 3.50 lakh cash and ornaments worth Rs. 6,17,500 were seized from them, police said.

Acting on a tip-off, the crime branch of Thane police nabbed two persons from a utensils shop in Ambernath when they were purchasing stolen jewellery from a woman on April 1, Ulhasnagar crime unit senior inspector Uttam Tangade said.

However, the woman fled from the spot leaving Rs 3.5 lakh cash which was seized by police, he said.

When the police questioned the nabbed father-son duo, Ramesh Oswal and Subham Oswal, they revealed that the woman had brought some stolen jewellery to them and had come to collect money for the same.

Police later raided their premises and seized jewellery worth 90 gm, including a gold necklace, chain and ‘mangalsutra’.

During interrogation, the duo also informed that they had sold some stolen jewellery to two other persons – Deepak and Kaka- who were also arrested and ornaments weighing 186 gms were recovered from them.

Police said Ramesh was earlier also arrested in connection with a similar crime at Mira Road in Thane.

The accused woman, identified as Sangeeta Sudharshan Kucchi, used to frequent jewellery shops and lift ornaments from there. She would then sell it to shopkeepers, they said.

A number of offences have been registered against her in Navi Mumbai and Thane, police said, adding that a search was on to nab her.
