Vote for stable government

The elections have come close and we must think of political stability so that the chosen government can function unhindered and prevent arm twisting by coalition partners. The regional parties become a part of the coalition become very selfish which paves way for corruption and inaction. The nation has suffered a lot on account of this malpractice since last ten years. We cannot afford this anymore. BJP Vice-President Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi has not done the right thing by tweeting against former Janata Dal (U) leader Sabir Ali. Such high ranking functionaries must refrain from indulging in this act. Express dissent in party forums. Having said that, the reported terrorist links of Ali must be enquired and people should know about the truth.

BJP president Rajnath Singh is inducting all sort of people on the sly in an opportunistic manner. It should also be found out if Mr Naqvi is expressing his opposition because he does not want another Muslim to join the party. Baba Ramdev is a learned man and he should refrain from using unparliamentary language against Sonia Gandhi. If you feel Sonia is no good, then you should be better than her and prove it. Who stops you?

Providing clean drinking water to the citizens and offering electricity to small towns and villages is the need of the hour. Educated and capable people among us must put pressure on the government to perform on these counts by effectively mobilizing the industrialists/ entrepreneurs and providing all assistance to them. The IAS officers must be pro-active to aid and assist and not sit passively enjoying perquisites of the office. We always talk of politicians but forget that in most of the cases, these officers ( Secretaries) spoil the Minister. They raise objections when the minister has obtained favours and later start demanding the same for themselves.

In many cases, they are the ones who prompt the “party” to fulfill the demands raised by ministers and then start making their own demands. This part has to be clearly understood hence I have been advocating that no one should be allowed to join Central Civil Services unless he or she has performed two year compulsory national service. The next government must enact such a law for the development of the society, “samaj sudhar”. Plenty of work needs to be done with regard to constructing good roads, making the railways safer and faster. Therefore vote for stability so that all these work will commence on a war footing basis otherwise our nation will lag behind.

Modi has given a ‘face’ to opposition: Uddhav

uddhavAfter many years, the opposition in India has got a face in Narendra Modi and this has created a storm in national politics, Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray said in Mumbai on Sunday.

“Until now, barring (former prime minister) Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the Indian opposition parties lacked an acceptable ‘face’ before fighting elections. This time, people have a choice, a strong party and a good face in the form of Modi. The National Democratic Alliance has no cause for worry,” Thackeray said in an interview to party mouthpiece Saamana.

Thackeray’s comments may be a signal that after the recent strain, all is now well between the Shiv Sena and the Bharatiya Janata Party.

On the other hand, the ruling Congress is in a shambles, he said.

“Earlier, right from Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, the Congress had a ‘face’. This time, they are not willing to bring forward Rahul Gandhi, or Priyanka Gandhi-Vadra. They don’t have a face, but the opposition parties are united under Modi and confidently marching ahead,” the Shiv Sena chief said.

“Will this not lead to a repeat of the ‘India Shining’ campaign (of 2004)?” asked the interviewer, Sanjay Raut, also Saamana’s executive editor and Rajya Sabha member.

“Forget it, India will shine in a real sense under Modi. Earlier, ‘India Shining’ and ‘Feel Good’ were propounded by the NDA. But this was ridiculed by the opponents. Look now, what is the state of the poor? If that was not ‘India Shining’ and there was no ‘Feel Good’ factor at that time, then what do you feel now?” Thackeray countered.

He said when he had travelled abroad a couple of times during that time, Indians used to get great respect and tourists and investors were willing to come to the country.

“But now, the image is that India is steeped in corruption. Being famous is good, but now we are ‘infamous’ among foreign investors who are backing off from India. In fact, many of our own industrialists are packing their bags and moving out of India due to the maladministration here,” Thackeray said.

The Shiv Sena leader also spoke about the recent defections in the party.

He dismissed them as of little significance and said they were of little consequence to the party founded, built and nurtured by the late Bal Thackeray who died in November 2012.

Uddhav said there were questions: “After Bal Thackeray, what? Even now, there are similar questions, so what?”

To a query that ahead of the elections there were a lot of ‘Gayarams’ (defectors) from the Shiv Sena, Thackeray shot back that there was ‘Ram’ in the word ‘Gayaram’.

“But do they have any of the qualities of Lord Ram? How many people have gone with them? And now that they have gone, it’s clear to the public why they went,” he said.

He said there were some who quit but are now desperately remembering the late Bal Thackeray.

“They may have got posts and designations in other parties but the love and loyalty of Bal Thackeray and Shiv Sainiks they could get only from the Shiv Sena,” he said.

Modi Lashes Out at Rahul, Pawar, Chavan

Modi_PTINarendra Modi today mocked at Rahul Gandhi for giving ticket to “tainted” former Maharashtra chief minister Ashok Chavan and accused NCP chief Sharad Pawar of failing to stop farmers’ suicides in Maharashtra.

Addressing an election rally in Nanded, Modi slammed the Congress for being “shameless” by stating that no law stops Chavan from contesting polls.

“Though Shahzada (Rahul) has said he won’t compromise with corruption and action will taken in the case, Chavan was given the ticket,” he said.

Mocking at the Congress for resurrecting Chavan, he said, “For Congress giving ticket is taking action. What Adarsh candidates they have,” he said in an obvious reference to the Adarsh Housing scam in Mumbai in which the former CM’s name had cropped up.

“Can anyone think of a scam over widows of heroes who died in Kargil? Its not about a building in Mumbai or giving flats to in-laws,” he said.

Promising action on Adrash scam, he said no one will be spared when the new government assumes power after May 16.

In Amravati, Modi said Pawar has done little to save the farmers in the belt, which has seen a spate of suicides by them, and asked the voters to free India and Maharashtra of NCP.

“The Agriculture Minister is from here, yet he is unable to save farmers. He has time to talk on cricket but not for dying farmers. Let us have a NCP free India and Maharashtra,” he said.

Flaying the local body tax, he said, “LBT is nothing but Looto Baato Tax. This tax is ruining the farmers of Maharashtra.”

In Akola, Modi blasted UPA’s policies for the spate of farmer suicides in Vidarbha in the last few years.

Gujarat, he said, too had cotton growers, but they were not taking the extreme step like their counterparts in Maharashtra’s cotton belt.

“Like in Vidarbha there were cotton growers in Gujarat and his state, too, had to face drought. But, farmers in Gujarat did not think of ending their lives. In Vidarbha cotton production is 280 kg per hectare, while in Gujarat it is 630 kg,” he said, addressing a rally here.
Taking on the Congress, the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate said, “In 1857, the call was to free India from British and in 2014 the call is to free India from Congress”.

“Be it unemployment or farmers, they are just not bothered. Sadly, these people in Congress do not know what poverty is,” he charged.

Once again referring to Rahul Gandhi as ‘shahzada’, Modi said, “Does the shahzada know the pain of sleeping without shelter on cold nights.”

On the “CWG and Adarsh scams”, he said, “They have looted the country at will. Where will they be after May 16?”

May 16 is the day of counting of Lok Sabha votes and BJP is hopeful of coming back to power after a gap of 10 years.

Referring to the late Shiv Sena chief, Modi said, “Balasaheb Thackeray stays on in our hearts. Lets fulfil his dream of Congress Mukt Maharashtra and India.”

Taking a dig at the UPA, he said, “Usually there are coalitions to defeat the incumbent government but this is first election where everyone is coming together to stop Modi.

They want to do everything to ensure that Modi does not come to power.”

Modi also referred to the past survey of Rajiv Gandhi Foundation (RGF) on Gujarat to attack Rahul Gandhi.

“RGF has said in its survey that Gujarat is the most developed and progressive state. So are you questioning it (Foundation) in which your mother is chairperson?” Modi asked.

“These elections are a fight for good governance. After 16th May there will be time for good governance.”

Training his guns on Rahul, Modi asked why he was targeted shying away from UPA government’s performance.

The Centre has not equipped the farmers with even the basic techniques to improve their production quality, leaving them with no choice but to commit suicide, he said.

“There is an agriculture university in this region (in Akola). But is it of any use to the farmers?” he asked the gathering. Modi blamed Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar and the Congress for the plight of farmers.

The Gujarat CM slammed the Centre for banning cotton export, but providing subsidy on mutton export. “Because of ban on cotton export farmers in Gujarat suffered losses of Rs 7,000 crore. Imagine what farmers in Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh must have suffered,” he said.

HC upholds life sentence to woman for murdering husband

The Bombay High Court has upheld a life sentence awarded to a 27-year-old woman for murdering her husband after two months of marriage, while accepting the extra-judicial confession made by her to the victim’s brother that she had committed the offence.

A division bench of Justices V K Tahilramani and V L Achliya upheld the conviction and life sentence of Jyoti Malusare for murdering her husband Vijay on June 15, 2007.

Jyoti and Vijay had married on May 9, 2007. However, Jyoti was in a relationship with another person Jeevan Waragade before marriage.

According to the prosecution, Jyoti and Jeevan hatched conspiracy to murder Vijay and on the night of June 14, 2007. She poisoned her husband’s milk and then strangulated him to death when he was asleep.

The next day morning, Vijay’s brother Abhay, who lived in an adjacent room, failed to get response from him when he tried to wake him up. Abhay, with the help of neighbours, rushed the victim to a hospital where he was declared dead.

Abhay later made enquiries with Jyoti as to what had happened the previous night.

According to prosecution, Jyoti confessed poisoning her husband and then strangulating him to death with a towel.

Abhay lodged an FIR against Jyoti and she was arrested the same day. While trial was conducted against both Jyoti and Jeevan, the Sessions court acquitted Jeevan due to lack of evidence. Jyoti was convicted for murder and awarded life.

“If we consider the prosecution case and evidence adduced, then it is clear that there are no eyewitnesses to the incident. The entire case of the prosecution is based on the extra-judicial confession made by the accused Jyoti to the victim’s brother Abhay and circumstantial evidence,” the High Court noted while hearing Jyoti’s appeal against conviction.

The Court held that the prosecution managed to duly corroborate the extra-judicial confession with circumstantial evidence.

“We are of the view that Abhay’s testimony inspires full confidence and is found to be truthful. So also, the extra-judicial confession made by the accused to him is found to be voluntary and does not suffer from any material discrepancies,” the court said.

“We are, therefore, of the view that the extra-judicial confession made by accused to Abhay can be accepted as admissible piece of evidence to form the basis to uphold the conviction of the appellant,” the court said.

EC for pledge of ethical voting; appeals to dump the corrupt

Days after Union Agriculture Minister and NCP chief Sharad Pawar stoked a controversy by his remark on casting “double ballots”, the Election Commission has exhorted the electorate to commit themselves to “ethical voting” in the General Elections.

The latest move by the poll panel comes after it put up posters urging voters to select pro-development candidates and dump the criminals and the corrupts.

The Election Commission’s “pledge” asking people to vote ethically in the coming Lok Sabha elections is in the form of a letter written in Marathi for Maharashtra’s voters and in different regional languages for people from other parts.

The letter asks voters to elect a candidate who will “meet the aspirations of the people and the nation as a whole.”

It asks voters to cast their ballots “without fail, fear or greed, and without keeping caste, religion and creed considerations in mind” and to “inspire and encourage friends and family members” to vote in this fashion.

The letter also states that electing a candidate is not merely a citizen’s right but their responsibility towards the nation.

Of the eight lakh such letters being distributed by the poll panel, around three lakh would reach the electors with voters’ slips in the city and around five lakh in the suburbs.

An official said people would be asked to sign and submit these to ward officers or election officials or at the polling booths.

Help of ward officers and staff at the collector’s offices, residents’ welfare associations and various NGOs is being taken to distribute these letters, sources said.

The commission has already put up posters and banners urging people to vote for candidates who are pro-development and well-educated and also asked voters to beware of those who offer bribes and inducements as such elements would indulge in corruption in the future.

The posters say people should also know about the assets and liabilities of candidates before voting for them.

Addressing a rally of Mathadi workers (head loaders) from western Maharashtra region in Navi Mumbai last week, Pawar had appealed to them to “vote twice by taking advantage of multi-phase polling in Maharashtra by erasing indelible ink applied to their forefingers”.

However, after his remarks caused an uproar, Pawar sought to tone them down, saying they were made “in jest”.

Teacher held for molesting 11 year old girl in Thane

Thane police arrested a pervert man who used to teach in coaching classes in Dombivali area. He was booked for molesting a 11 year girl student.

The man, identified by police only as “Nair Sir” who taught at Siddhivinayak Classes, was apprehended last night after the girl’s family lodged a complaint.

According to the complaint, the tutor yesterday called the minor and showed pictures of her he had taken on his camera mobile phone. He then touched her inappropriately several times.

Following the complaint, police arrested the accused and booked him under relevant sections of the IPC and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.

Four nabbed in police trap for selling snake venom worth Rs. 55 lakhs

Kolhapur police arrested four people in Thane when they were allegedly trying to sell snake venom worth Rs. 55 lakhs.

Actually, this was a trap laid by police for the thugs. They sent a decoy customer to buy venom from them, said senior police inspector J S Kadam.

Police seized over a half litre of the venom from their possession.

According to police, the venom commands the market rate of Rs 1 crore.
The accused are identified as Prakash Nirmale (23), Santosh Patil (22), Ravindra Sutar (25) and Nilesh Patil (25), police said.

They are booked under sections of Wild Life Protection Act, 1972, Kadam said.

Former Solapur BJP MP Subhas Deshmukh quits party

BJP received a jolt after its former Member of Parliament Subhash Deshmukh resigned from the party.

Subhash Deshmukh is a heavyweight leader of Western Maharashtra who became popular after defeating Ujwala Shinde, wife of Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde from the Solapur Lok Sabha constituency.

Deshmukh had sought a ticket for his son Rohan Deshmukh from the Osmanabad Lok Sabha constituency which is merely 40 km away from the Solapur district border.

While talking to PTI today, Deshmukh expressed displeasure over BJP’s behaviour and said that the party has no respect for loyalists.

Ironically, his son Rohan Deshmukh has not withdrawn his nomination from the Osmanabad Lok Sabha constituency and is all set to contest elections against Shiv Sena candidate Ravi Gaikwad.

Incidentally, former minister Padamsinh Patil is the Nationalist Congress Party’s (NCP) candidate from the same constituency.

Mayawati, the next PM?

There will be no wonder if Mayawati emerges as a prime minister of this country. UP and Bihar politics has played crucial role in making and breaking the power. Har Har NaMo and NaMo NaMo has hurt the religious sentiments of many Hindus and a saint like Swami Swarupanandji has already decided make his mind not to support Modi. Amit Shah’s unwanted comments of sidelining Brahmins from the party have given another setback to BJP. Already many have described Modi as a divisive leader, BSP supremo Mayawati expressed fear that the country may witness riots if he wins power at the centre. Anyways, Modi supporters are really not bothered about the growth, development or any other issues; they just know if the “Train is burnt, Modi burnt the entire community;” the craze for Hindi Rashtra has taken over all merits and de-merits of Modi as a Prime Minister. This election is purely, communal.

However, BJP is looping Muslim celebrities and candidates in party to show it’s secular stand but that really makes no difference to win over Muslims’ heart and confidence for Modi. In a nutshell, Modi waves are fading in UP. Congress has failed to utilise this opportunity by assuming that the Party has no future this time. The top brass of Congress, such as Sonia, Rahul, Priyanka and others have already accepted their defeat, maybe that’s the reason the parliamentary contestants are not receiving funds and support for the party. Congress’s disinterest in UP and anti-Modi campaign will definitely benefit Mayawati in the state, and she might emerge as one of the strongest party Supremo for the PM post.

BJP is behaving like a one man party. Many senior leaders have been sidelined and randomly ignored. There are many spoilers within the party, such as Sushma Swaraj, Murli Manohar Joshi and Rajnath Singh. Singh is Thakur and somewhere Thakur politics makes him greedy. The most senior party leader Advani has become the biggest challenge for the party. LK Advani’s anger against the party leadership is quite obvious because BJP is behaving like a ‘one man show’ run by Modi. Advani is a senior leader of the Saffron Party. When the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance was in power from 1998–2004 under Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Advani served as Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister (the latter in 2002–04). He was the Leader of the Opposition in the 10th Lok Sabha and 14th Lok Sabha (lower house of Parliament).

Advani began his political career as a volunteer of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, his life as a social servant started in 1947 when he was elected as the Secretary, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Karachi. Advani was later sent to Matsya-Alwar in Rajasthan, which had witnessed communal violence following Partition, to oversee the affairs of the RSS there. He is not only a senior leader but has also mentored many leaders. Advani became a member of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, also known as the Jana Sangh, which was founded in 1951 by Shyama Prasad Mookerjee. He became member of the Rajya Sabha from Delhi for the entire six year tenure from 1970.After serving in various positions in the Jana Sangh, he became its President in 1973 at the Kanpur session of the party working committee. His first act as president of the BJS was to expel founder member and veteran leader Balraj Madhok from primary membership of the party for supposedly repeatedly violating the party directives and acting against the interests of the party. He was a Rajya Sabha member from Gujarat from 1976 to 1982.

When Jai Prakash Narayan, who led the public movement against the Emergency refused to campaign for the opposition parties unless all of them joined together, the Jana Sangh and many other opposition parties merged into the Janata Party. With the dissolution of the Jana Sangh, Advani and his colleague Atal Bihari Vajpayee joined the Janata Party to fight the Lok Sabha Elections of 1977. The Janata Party was formed by political leaders and activists of various political parties who had been united in opposing the state of Emergency imposed in 1975 by then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. After elections were called in 1977, the Janata Party was formed from the union of the Congress (O), the Swatantra Party, the Socialist Party of India, the Jana Sangh and the Lok Dal. Jagjivan Ram split from the Indian National Congress, bringing a small faction known as the Congress for Democracy with him, and joined the Janata alliance. The widespread unpopularity of Emergency rule gave the Janata Party and its allies a landslide victory in the election. Morarji Desai became the Prime Minister of India, Advani became the Minister of Information and Broadcasting and Vajpayee became the Foreign Minister. The erstwhile members of the Jana Sangh quit the Janata Party and they formed the new Bharatiya Janata Party. Advani became a prominent leader of the newly founded BJP and represented the party in the Rajya Sabha.

Recently, he was upset with the party. A series of top BJP leaders failed to persuade LK Advani to run for Parliament from Gandhinagar in Gujarat, the party president Rajnath Singh and Narendra Modi went and met the 87-year-old to attempt a breakthrough. The BJP said it would “prefer” Mr. Advani to contest the general election from Gandhinagar for the sixth term; he wants to relocate to Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh, governed by Shivraj Singh Chouhan, with whom he has been developing a deepening alliance. When the hard sell didn’t work, Advani was pinged by the BJP’s ideological mentor, the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh or RSS whose chief Mohan Bhagwat said the BJP’s top leaders must present themselves as united.

Anyhow, Advani was solaced, but now Jaswant Singh is contesting from Barmer as an independent candidate. He has never represented it in the Lok Sabha, but has reportedly told the party that he wants to contest what is likely to be his last election, from the constituency where he was born. His family hails from Jasol, a village in Barmer. Singh has won Lok Sabha elections before from Chittorgarh in Rajasthan in 1991 and 1996 and from Darjeeling in West Bengal in 2009. However, Vasundhara Raje is allegedly keen to award Barmer to Col (Retd.) Sona Ram Choudhary, who entered in BJP from the Congress Party earlier this week. The former army officer has represented Barmer in Parliament earlier, but was defeated in the 2004 election by Mr. Singh’s son Manavendra, who is now a member of the state legislature. Jaswant Singh was expelled from the party for six years for his behaviour.
Forget the personal differences and pending ambitions for the sake of the party and for the country’s progress. However, on the other hand, RSS and Modi are behaving like a dictator. Advani is the classic case of ‘build something and if you cannot enjoy destroy it’ syndrome. He needs to understand that people are not voting for BJP, people are voting for Modi. People are not talking of BJP, they are talking about Modi. He should be large hearted to see someone from the organisation growing up and building that kind of dreams in people by his work as one has seen in Gujarat. At this ripe old age, Advani should not lose the respect which he has built in so many years of struggle. Let’s see on May 16 who will make to the power corridor.

Naqvi should prove allegations or apologise: Sabir Ali

Sabir-Ali-NaqviAfter his unceremonious removal from the Bharatiya Janata Party, former JD(U) leader Sabir Ali on Sunday demanded an apology from BJP’s Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi for his allegations that he was close to Indian Mujahideen co-founder Yasin Bhatkal.

Ali alongwith his wife held a press conference in the capital and dared Naqvi to prove the allegations that he had harboured Bhatkal. He said, “Charges against me are completely baseless. Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi’s statement has disturbed me, I have no links with any terrorist.”

Challenging Naqvi openly, Ali said he was ready to face the gallows if allegations against him were proven.

Ali then recalled his acquaintance with Naqvi to reiterate that the latter had never made any utterance against him while he was at JD(U) but things changed upon his induction into the BJP.

“I was in the Rajya Sabha for six years, I was in JD(U), during that time nobody said anything about me. We were in the same house of Parliament, we were on friendly terms, at that time he didn’t say anything about me. A few days ago we travelled together on a flight, even then he said nothing,” said Ali.

“But when I joined BJP, maybe ‘they’ felt people who are connected to ground reality would be a threat to them,” he added.

Sabir Ali’s wife, who claimed she was disturbed with the allegations, said, “It has been 48 hours since Naqvi saab made the allegations. I want media to ask how do they know that Ali saab knows Bhatkal?”

Ali even threatened legal action against Naqvi, and said, “I am sending a legal notice to Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi. He must apologise within 24 hours.”

“I want a written apology from Naqvi saab within 24 hours or want him to provide proof of our relations with Bhatkal,” said Ali.

He even dared Naqvi to a ‘show of strength’ of sorts, and said, “Put BJP tag aside and let’s see how many people you can gather, I will show what ground strength I have.”

Earlier on Saturday, the BJP had cancelled the membership of Sabir Ali amid growing dissidence over his induction into its ranks.

Addressing a press conference, BJP’s deputy leader in Rajya Sabha Ravi Shankar Prasad had said that party president Rajnath Singh had decided to annul Ali’s one-day-old membership.

He also announced passing a resolution that directs BJP members to discuss matters related to induction in internal forums only.

Senior BJP leaders were unhappy with senior BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi for expressing his dissent regarding Ali’s induction on social media.

Sabir Ali had earlier urged the Bihar BJP unit to put his membership on hold. The Rajya Sabha MP had also offered to quit politics forever if it was proved that he has any connection with terrorist Yasin Bhatkal as alleged by Naqvi.

On Friday, BJP leader Naqvi, while referring to Sabir Ali, had tweeted: “Terrorist Bhatakal friend join BJP…soon accepting Dawood…” Naqvi has deleted the controversial tweet.

There have been allegations on social media that Indian Mujahideen co-founder Yaseen Bhatkal was arrested from Sabir Ali’s house. Police or the Home Ministry have, however, not given any such information officially.
