BJP accuses Chidambaram of taking economy to ‘complete mess’

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader and former finance minister Yashwant Sinha took a dig at outgoing FM P Chidambaram on Sunday saying that the Bombay Stock Exchange’s sensitive index’s rise coincided with the announcement that the latter wasn’t contesting Lok Sabha polls 2014.

Addressing scribes at the BJP headquarters here, Sinha said, “Chidambaram tried to bring down fiscal deficit very artificially. (As a result) The UPA is leaving a huge burden of subsidy on the next government.”

And added, “The Finance Minister will be remembered in history as a spoiler and an arrogant leader.”

Continuing his tirade against the outgoing United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, Sinha said that the Congress-led government showed no concern for the poor and downtrodden strata of the society.

“UPA has no concern for BPL families, the last survey was done by NDA in 2002, since then there’s been no new survey,” said Sinha.

BJP leader Subramanian Swamy said the next government led by Narendra Modi would have to undertake major reforms to undo the damage caused by the UPA government.

“We are in a very, very delicate situation and the new government will have to undertake major economic reforms to rectify what damage the UPA has done to Indian economy,” said Swamy in Bangalore.

Hitting out at UPA government for economic growth rate of 4.8 per cent when compared to NDA’s 8.4 per cent, he said fiscal deficit was at all time high and could lead to a major crisis.

“….Government has now reached the stage that for every Rupee that they borrow from public sector bank, 96 paisa they have to repay as interest on principal for the previous loan.”

He said, “we are in a complete mess and the most alarming part of today’s situation is that the budget has been put in such a difficult and bad state by Chidambaram …”

Stating that the next government would be led by Modi, Swamy said, “it is going to face a situation of bankruptcy of Indian economy, which it will have to rectify within six months.”

BJP’s manifesto will speak about some of the economic reforms planned by the party, he added. Contesting UPA’s claim that large part of economic crisis is due to external crisis, he said “….We were affected by the instrument created by Chidambaram that was called participatory note….Participatory note is a method of laundering money that goes out of India to bring it back and invest it in our stock market.”

Deeply saddened by decision to expel me from BJP: Jaswant Singh

Jaswant Singh has said that he is deeply saddened by the decision to expel him from the BJP. Mr. Singh, 76, was expelled on Saturday for six years for refusing to change his mind about running as an independent candidate for Parliament from Barmer in Rajasthan.

“I am saddened that the BJP of today is not the party that Atal Bihari Vajpayee, LK Advani and Bhairon Singh Shekhawat had envisioned and aspired it to be,” Mr. Singh said in a statement.
“A party that puts the whims of individuals before the greater good of people, has certainly lost its vision,” he added.

Mr. Singh won the last national election from Darjeeling in West Bengal. He said he wanted to relocate to Barmer, where he was born, because he felt he may not contest another election after this one.

The party refused, choosing Col Sonaram Choudhary who switched sides just weeks ago from the Congress to the BJP. The retired army officer is a Jat, the dominant caste in the region. Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje championed his candidature, according to party sources.

Mr. Singh said that he would have supported any candidate with a clean record instead of the Congress defector with a questionable public record. “BJP frittered away its virtue for temporary political gain,” he said adding, “Fight in Barmer is a fight for values.”

India sends black box of crashed C-130J to US for decoding data

The black box of the C-130J transport aircraft that crashed near Gwalior on Friday has suffered damage and the Indian Air Force (IAF) has sent it to the US to seek the assistance of its manufacturer, Lockheed Martin in decoding the data, officials said.

The connectors of the Flight Data Recorder or the black box are damaged along with the card inside the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR).

“To avoid any loss of data while trying to decode the equipment, we have decided to send the black box to the US,” an IAF spokesperson said.

The black box was sent by an early morning flight today to Lockheed Martin, he said.

The delay in decoding the black box data would also mean a delay in determining the cause of the crash, he said.

The IAF had stated on Friday that it would come out with a preliminary report on the reasons behind the mishap within 24 hours.

The IAF spokesperson also denied reports suggesting that the C-130J fleet had been grounded following the crash, saying the aircraft did not fly yesterday as the personnel of the squadron were busy in the last rites of the five victims of the crash.

The Super Hercules Special Operations transport aircraft crashed near Gwalior killing five crew members after taking off from Agra.

The aircraft had apparently hit a hillock before crashing on the rocky surface on the banks of Chambal River near Gwalior.

India had recently inducted six C-130J Super Hercules aircraft, which were bought from the US at a cost of around Rs. 5,780 crore (USD 962 million) four years ago.

The home base of the 77 squadron ‘Veiled Vipers’ operating the aircraft is at Hindon in Ghaziabad near New Delhi.

Sports ministry the most coveted portfolio for me: Ajay Maken

Former sports minister and senior Congress leader Ajay Maken admitted that the sports ministry remains the most coveted post for him. “I was told that I was being elevated by being inducted into Cabinet but I have a passion for the Sports and the portfolio is dear to me,” he said.

“We need a strong sports minister and he should be given full five years to function,” he said over the need of a sports minister in the government.

Speaking about the shortcomings in the sports scenario in India, Maken said that the country needs better sports culture. People are still focusing only on studies and not on physical fitness. This thought needs to be changed,” he said adding that there is no no dearth of funds or resources in sports.

“We need a strong sports minister and he should be given full five years to function,” the former sports minister said.

“Government and sports federations have a very important role to play in encouraging a better sports culture,” he said.

He also suggested that Physical Fitness Programme should be brought in to develop sports culture. “Such programmes should be started and extra grades and weightage should be given to develop a better sports scenario,” he said.
Answering a question on the Olympics, Maken said, “Doubling medals with every Olympic game is what we are looking at.”

Speaking about the upcoming elections where he is fighting from Delhi, he said that he is concentrating on his work in the constituency. “I do not think about my opponents. I’m going to my electorate with positive work that I have done in the past,” he said.

Arvind Kejriwal campaigns for Gul Panag in Chandigarh

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convenor Arvind Kejriwal commenced his road show in Chandigarh in support of party candidate Gul Panag for next month’s election.

Mr. Kejriwal arrived in Chandigarh from Haryana where he was on a road show since Friday.

After his road show in the Union Territory, Mr. Kejriwal will travel to Panchkula in Haryana on his way to Panipat and Sonipat where he will culminate his three-day electioneering for the upcoming general elections.

A large number of police personnel have been deployed along Mr. Kejriwal’s road show route to avoid any untoward incident.

But the AAP supporters have thrown traffic rules to the wind in Chandigarh – a city known for strict enforcement of traffic laws.

The AAP workers openly flouted the driving rules and safety norms while the traffic police remained a mute spectator.

The road show which commenced from Hallo Majra is scheduled to travel through various areas of Chandigarh, including Ramdarbar, Burail, Sectors 45, 44, 22, 29, Attawa and Mani Majra from where it will enter Panchkula in Haryana.

Besides Gul Panang, the other main contestants from Chandigarh include Congress’ sitting MP Pawan Bansal and another actor-turned-politician Kirron Kher from the BJP.

National interest must come first

We have recently witnessed mishaps involving Naval Craft and the military aircrafts. Accidents do occur and probe must be conducted and steps must be taken to prevent mishaps. On the other hand, it has been observed that most of the meritorious boys and girls refrain from joining the Army, Navy and Air Forces. They are keen to get tickets from AAP for contesting Lok Sabha elections. Young leaders belonging to AAP should have joined the armed forces and the same aspect applies to other political parties too. Why do leaders like Sushma Swaraj get elated when someone proposes her name for the next deputy Prime Minister? Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had said that Arun Jaitley could be offered the deputy PM’s post if NDA forms the next government.

Whatever has happened is past but the new government must draft a law that requires a person to perform two year national service before joining the Central Civil Services. This norm must also apply to persons who seek ticket for the Lok Sabha elections. If that happens, you will not find persons like Arvind Kejriwal, Kumar Biswas, Shazia Ilmi etc; behaving in an irresponsible manner. They are least bothered about the development of the nation and yet expect political power by conducting themselves obnoxiously.

The training offered by Air Force and Navy needs to be upgraded and made more effective. I am not criticizing them unnecessarily but only pointing out that there is room for betterment. They should visit the colleges to select the cadets (talent scouting). Sailors retire too early from the Navy. Experienced officials must serve the Navy for a long period of time. Selection of GP ratings is largely undertaken by brokers in Merchant Shipping which is creating regional imbalance and responsible for deterioration in quality of services. More interaction should happen between senior Merchant Shipping officers and Naval officers as the former possesses more experience. Navy can select some Masters and Chief Engineers on vacation (or even otherwise) who can assist them in operation of the crafts through healthy transfer of knowledge.

We are becoming a nation that wastes too much time in electioneering. This practices has to be curtailed. Uma Bharti is likely to contest against Sonia Gandhi and Smriti Irani against Rahul Gandhi. What sort of contest are we conceptualizing? Uma Bharti will contest election from Jhansi. Earlier she was keen to contest from Bhopal and Rae Bareli. Has she taken this decision for personal reasons or does it have anything to do with the nation’s development agenda? Gul Panag is contesting because perhaps her popularity graph is dipping in films. She intends to regain it by contesting election. Both Gul and Kiran Kher must lose election (they should have served Defence Forces instead of seeking publicity right away). Our voters should vote for the right candidate and avoid a fractured mandate to keep trouble makers and publicity seekers at bay. National interest must come first.

Modi in rush to take over PM’s post, says Pawar

Sharad-PawarFiring a salvo against BJP’s Prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, NCP Chief Sharad Pawar has alleged that the senior BJP leader is in a rush to take over the country’s top post.

“He (Modi) appears to be in a hurry to grab the PM’s post and the power and hence BJP is posing him as a PM candidate. No party has announced a PM candidate in advance in our representative democracy,” Pawar said addressing a joint workers’ rally of Congress and NCP.

Slamming Modi’s developmental assertions, he said the “claims of Gujarat as model of progress and development are all false as statistics indicate otherwise.”

Stating that the UPA government has stood by its people, Pawar said that through the years the government has supported the farmers during every calamity.

On the occasion, Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said marketing techniques and media were being used to create an illusion that the BJP is an alternative to the Congress-led UPA.

“They are trying to misguide people of the nation. I challenge the Chief Minister of Gujarat to compare the progress of Maharashtra and Gujarat over the years,” he said.

People should not elect a candidate whose personality appears to be dictatorial, he said. “He (Modi) seems to have hijacked his own party and is on a spree of insulting its senior leaders,” Chavan alleged.

Meanwhile, Pawar said he chose senior NCP leader and state PWD minister Chhagan Bhujbal to contest the Lok Sabha election from Nashik as he wants the latter to fill up his place in the Parliament’s Lower House.

“I have moved to Rajya Sabha. Bhujbal is senior and the party needs a senior representative to take my place. I have hence asked Bhujbal to contest for Lok Sabha,” the Union Agriculture minister said.

Those present at the rally included Chhagan Bhujbal, LS candidate from Dindori (ST) seat Dr Bharati Pawar, state revenue minister Balasaheb Thorat.

Jiah case: HC asks cops why SMS text, calls not in chargesheet

Zia-KjanThe Bombay High Court asked Juhu police to explain why it had not included in the chargesheet the text of SMS messages and number of telephone calls received by actor Jiah Khan minutes before her death.

The Court was hearing a petition filed by Rabia Khan, mother of Jiah, demanding a probe by Special Investigating Team or CBI into the actor’s death as she suspected that it was a case of murder and not suicide.

“You (police) must place all the material before the Court and let the Judge decide what to do”, a bench of Justices Naresh Patil and Abhay Thipsay told Additional Public Prosecutor Madhavi Mhatre who represented the State of Maharashtra and Juhu police which is probing the case.

Mhatre sought time to seek instructions from the State and police on their stand for transferring the case to CBI or SIT and why they had not included text of SMS messages and numbers of telephone calls received by Jiah just before she was found dead in her house last year.

The bench posted the matter for hearing on April 7.

In October 2013, Rabia had filed a petition seeking CBI probe but did not press for it as the High Court had asked police to record her statement and probe as if it was a case of murder.

The police had probed on these lines and filed a chargesheet saying it was a suicide case and charged actor Suraj Pancholi, Jiah’s boyfriend, for abatement of suicide.

Senior Counsel Mahesh Jethmalani, on behalf of Rabia, argued that he was asking for a fair and transparent probe.

The police have made out a case as if Jiah was a maniac and in depression and hence she committed suicide. But, circumstances point out that this could be a case of murder, Jethmalani said.

He argued that two days before her death, Jiah had returned from Hyderabad after bagging a role in a film. It is very unlikely that she would commit suicide.

53-year-old Rabia has cited circumstances which point out that Jiah was allegedly killed. Air-condition of Jiah’s bedroom was on but windows were open when she was found dead. Also, there is no explanation as to how Jiah reached the ceiling fan to hang herself when there was no stool in house.

Blaming Suraj for her daughter’s death, Rabia said she had carried out a sting operation of few witnesses who said in an audio recording that they had not told police what had been recorded in their statements, thereby doubting the police version that Jiah had committed suicide.

NCP leader Vinayak Mete joins opposition alliance

Vinayak-MeteThe Mahayuti (mega-alliance) of Shiv Sena, BJP and three other opposition parties in Maharashtra got a boost with the Maratha organisation Shivsangram, headed by NCP leader Vinayak Mete, joining it.

Mete announced his decision to join the Mahayuti in the presence of Sena president Uddhav Thackeray, BJP leader Gopinath Munde and RPI leader Ramdas Athawale here this evening.

“I decided to support Mahayuti as I was fed up with the inaction of the Congress-NCP government in granting reservations to the Maratha community,” Mete told reporters.

Mete was recently served a show-cause notice by NCP after he alleged that senior NCP minister Chhagan Bhujbal was against the reservations for the Maratha community.

There are indications that Mete would now ask his supporters to back Munde, who is contesting from Beed Lok Sabha constituency, and would himself contest from Risod in Vidarbha in the Assembly elections later this year.

Munde had last week expressed confidence that his party would break the “backbone” of the Sharad Pawar-led NCP, as many of its leaders were on the way to BJP.

“In the coming days, ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, many more NCP leaders will join BJP,” Munde had said while welcoming Fulchand Karad, a prominent NCP leader from Beed, into the saffron party.

NCP recently also sacked Vijaykumar Gavit, a senior minister in the state government, after his daughter joined BJP and got the Lok Sabha ticket from Nandurbar.

Earlier this month, NCP leader Kapil Patil from Bhiwandi in Thane district quit the party to join BJP. Before that, last month, NCP MLC Sanjay Kaka Patil joined BJP. He is now contesting against the sitting MP from Sangli and Union minister of State for Coal, Pratik Patil.
