A complaint was filed in a magistrate’s court against Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan and a few others for allegedly promoting “false beliefs” in a TV advertisement.
Activist Hemant Patil, the complainant, has demanded registration of a police case against them under Maharashtra Prevention and Eradication of Human Sacrifice and Other Inhuman, Evil and Aghori Practices and Black Magic Act, 2013.
Amitabh Bachchan had played a ghost in Hindi film ‘Bhoothnath’, and its sequel, ‘Bhoothnath Returns’, is coming.
Patil’s complaint is about a TV commercial for health drink brand Complan where Amitabh Bachchan reprises his ghost character from the film.
He says the advertisement promotes belief in the existence of ghosts and spirits and consequently the need for the magic to ward them off.
“The food-product company has come out with a 45-second advertisement on the issue without publishing any disclaimer before or after the broadcast,” said Patil’s lawyer, advocate Wajid Pathan.
Suburban Bandra police refused to register a complaint, so Patil had to move the court, the petition says. Magistrate Sita Kulkarni would hear it on April 18.
The Bombay High Court has set aside a caste validity certificate issued to Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde in 2009 on the ground that the scrutiny committee in Maharashtra had not passed a reasoned order as required under the law.
The court, however, referred Shinde’s case back to the Caste Scrutiny Committee which would decide on it afresh.
The bench also directed Shinde to appear before the committee in March-end and asked the latter to decide his claim for issuance of a caste certificate as expeditiously as possible, preferably within two months from the date he appears before it.
“We direct the caste scrutiny committee to hold an inquiry in accordance with law, if necessary, by calling for report of the Vigilance Cell,” said the bench in a recent order.
The vigilance committee is expected to hold an inquiry by speaking to the family members, neighbours, community members and school authorities of the applicant/claimant.
The court, however, made it clear that it was not making any adjudication on merits of the caste claim of Shinde. “All contentions on merits are kept open,” it observed.
The order was passed by a bench headed by Justice Abhay Oka on a petition filed by Pramod Gaikwad who had challenged the caste certificate issued to Shinde, saying it was invalid in law.
Gaikwad’s lawyer Helen Mandlik questioned the lack of mandatory reasoning in the caste certificate issued to Shinde by the scrutiny committee. She argued it was bad in law as guidelines had not been followed.
Disposing of the petition, the court agreed with Gaikwad and sent Shinde’s caste claim files back to the scrutiny committee for considering it afresh.
Satish Maneshinde, Shinde’s counsel, argued a fresh inquiry may be ordered in a time-bound schedule.
This plea was allowed by the court which asked the scrutiny committee to decide the claim within 60 days.
Narendra Modi will be extensively campaigning across Maharashtra to ensure better political alignment between BJP and Shiv Sena.
The BJP is trying to mend fences with Shiv Sena after relations between both the party had strained in the aftermath of Nitin Gadkari‘s meeting with MNS supremo Raj Thackeray urging him to refrain from contesting Lok Sabha election in order to prevent the split of Marathi votes. The party has got into the damage control mode and asked its prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi to campaign in those constituencies where Shiv Sena is contesting election. Modi will be extensively campaigning across Maharashtra and will hold rallies in many constituencies in order to ensure better political alignment and bonding between both parties. Earlier the Sena had expressed its displeasure over Gadkari’s meeting with Raj and asked BJP to clarify its stand over MNS.
Sena had attacked BJP for sidelining Lal Krishna Advani and giving more prominence to Modi. It also said that the party now has no place for the veteran leader who had played a vital role in BJP’s development.
On the row between Advani and BJP regarding the Bhopal ticket, Saamna wrote, “Advani built the organisation and ensured that the party saw its glory days but the decision on his ticket/constituency was kept hanging till the end. In the end the party had to say it was upto him to contest from either seat.”
The development stirred the politics in Maharashtra with Shiv Sena flexing its muscles over continuation of alliance. This prompted top BJP leadership, including Rajnath Singh and Modi, to do firefighting by pacifying Uddhav.
According to Sena and BJP leaders all differences between both the parties can be resolved if Modi campaigns in the state. Most of the rallies have been planned to benefit the alliance across Maharashtra. Rally venues planned till now include Kalyan (Sena), Aurangabad (Sena) Hathkanangle and Mhada (Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana) and Satara (RPI).
Rallies have also been proposed for Bhandara-Gondia (BJP), Jalna (BJP) and Pune (BJP). But the party says the area will be selected in a way that two adjoining constituencies too reap the benefit.
Modi, who plans to hold 185 rallies across the country, has given his consent for 10-12 public rallies in Maharashtra. The state BJP has, however, sent request to the headquarters for 16 rallies. Maharashtra is going to polls in three phases — April 10, April 17 and April 24.
According to highly placed sources in the BJP, the party is now identifying critical seats across regions to ensure all alliance partners “reap the benefit of Modi factor”. The special emphasis is on Sena seats across Vidarbha, North Maharashtra, Marathwada, Western Maharashtra and Konkan (Mumbai/Thane). On March 30, Modi will hold public rallies in Akola (Vidarbha) and Nanded (Marathwada).
“We are contesting the elections under the banner of ‘Mahyauti’ (grand alliance). We will ensure Modi’s rallies are so well planned that they benefit all parties in the alliance and constituencies,” says state BJP president Devendra Fadnavis.
Modi’s poll manager, who is coordinating the campaign with Maharashtra, says: “The demand for rallies by Modi is rising not only in Maharashtra but all other states. Modi has promised that he would like to accommodate maximum demands.”
Recently, Baba Ramdev spiced up the electoral battle in Rae Bareli by suggesting firebrand Hindutva leader Uma Bharati as probable candidate against Sonia Gandhi. BJP leaders indicated that actress turned politician Smriti Irani could be fielded against Rahul Gandhi in Amethi. While Uma is apparently expecting the party to “compensate” her for taking on Sonia, Irani is understood to be willing to throw her hat into the electoral ring. The BJP had been toying with some big names as probable candidate, but hasn’t been able to finalise on it. It proposed former Army Chief General (retd) VK Singh to take on Sonia Gandhi from Rae Bareli but he declined. The last time BJP polled over one lakh vote was in the 2006 by-election, necessitated following Sonia’s resignation after the office of profit row. Then, BJP’s Vinay Katiyar, another face of the Temple movement, polled 1,61,290 votes. Still, he lost by a margin of over 2.5 lakh votes. The BJP candidate stood fourth in 2004 and third (in the absence of a Samajwadi Party candidate) in 2009. Similarly, the BJP tried to woo ‘sulking’ Sultanpur MP Sanjay Singh – who belongs to the royal family from Amethi – with the idea of fielding him against Rahul Gandhi in Amethi. The Congress though managed to retain him by accommodating him in the Rajya Sabha from Assam and fielding his wife Amita Singh against Varun Gandhi in Sultanpur. BJP set at rest speculation that Uma Bharti could be fielded against Sonia Gandhi from Rae Bareli after the firebrand leader asserted that she “cannot leave my Jhansi” from where she has already been nominated. BJP doesn’t have strong contenders, who can guarantee the win for the party. How BJP managed to distribute tickets is hush hush, but still there are lots of speculations too.
On the other hand, after declaring his candidature from Varanasi, Kejriwal versus Modi fight was given a new turn and Varanasi became most talked about constituency. India is setting an example as a great country where someone like Rahul Gandhi and Arvind Kejriwal is been seriously considered as a potential prime ministerial candidate though they possess zero track record or experience. Let’s keep Arvind Kejriwal aside, look at the party’s candidates as a whole, Titaliya Devi (in Jamui, Jharkhand – A Nobel Peace Nominee and daily wager), Medha Patkar, HS Phoolka (Advocate fighting for the justice from 30 years in 1984 anti Sikh riots), Anita Pratap and others. Since the political party has solicited advice from public for information of probity and clean image on their candidates. They must be trying their tooth and nail to make this attempt of AAP a reality in India; else Congress and BJP will keep doing their politics of convenience as ever. BJP striked a deal with Paswan and gave seat to junior Paswan from Jamui. Is this the kind of politics we want to see in India?
Modi is confident because he has seen the result of development model. However, Kejriwal exposed this Gujarat Development Model of BJP and Modi. Kejriwal says there is no such development taken place in Gujarat. Kejriwal’s only agenda is eradication of corruption but he has no proper plan as to how he is going to implement it. His idea of contesting against Modi from Varanasi constituency is to defeat him by splitting the votes. The result will be neither the development model nor will the corruption be removed. If we look at the history then from thousands of years we are seeing that to defeat one king, the enemy king asks for the help of another king and after snatching the kingdom from the first king, they both fight for that kingdom. Sometimes, we have to learn from history. India wants leaders who can take this country on development path and change the life of the citizens of the nation. India needs a leader who can take bold decisions without hesitation. Coalition politics should be stopped. People of India do not want to live in a nation which remains ”DEVELOPING” for another 60 years. They want to live in developed nation. People of India want a political institution which has clearly articulated position on constitution, territorial integrity of the nation and about those who challenge the very idea of democracy which is a prized legacy achieved by sacrifice of nation’s blood. On a wider perspective, Kejriwal may not be able to bring any change in the country. He has proved himself to be incapable of implementing firm decisions. He came to power in Delhi with a pledge to change the system and resigned blaming the system. Arvind Kejriwal is campaigning in Varanasi because Modi is trying his fate from this holy city. Kejriwal has no connection with Varanasi or its people and is even not interested. Varanasi is the oldest city in the world. Kejriwal is a mushroom which sprang up suddenly after the rain of Anna’s movement against corruption. If he has not participated in Anna’s dharna and fast, he would have been the exact common man and not a special common man heading a common man’s party. We have seen several such crusaders right from Jayaprakash Narayan, Chandrasekar, Lalu Prasad Yadav, V P Singh, etc. Yet, there is no revolution in India and the system and politics remain the same. We Indians cannot forget and forego our slave mentality. We elect Kings and Queens for a short period and we accept whatever they do without any refusal.
Modi enshrined to the throne of Chief Minister when the entire machinery failed in the state, way back in 2002. Today also BJP as a party has limited dreams and Modi has accepted the challenge to take it to power. Are we a punching bag between these two parties? AAP is becoming a catalyst for political churning in the history of Indian democracy and Varanasi represents the battlefield. More and more people of the country, particularly youth is disenchanted with corrupt, communal and criminal politics played by BJP and Congress. All the rational and sincere people should come in support of this new type of politics. India requires it on urgent basis. BJP seems to portray its most conservative and orthodox nature in this changing time when it fails to take a cue from honourable Supreme Court recently issued guidelines to Election Commission and political parties not to fray a candidate from two constituencies. It makes me wonder, how the BJP will react if some other wave stands at Vadodara and Modi wave goes for the next haywire toss of its life.
People of Varanasi will vote for someone who they think will be good for India and who can do their job. India requires real skilled person to solve those problems. However, here the million dollar question is that, who will make it to power?
Ending speculations, the Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday announced that Uma Bharti will not be fielded against Congress president Sonia Gandhi from Rae Bareli Lok Sabha constituency.
BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said that the party has decided that Uma Bharti will contest from Jhansi only.
The candidates for Amethi and Rae Bareli will be finalised shortly, added Trivedi.
The BJP’s decision came minutes after Uma Bharti, on micro blogging website Twitter, tweeted that she cannot leave Jhansi, which is in the Bundelkhand region of Uttar Pradesh.
Earlier this week, yoga guru Baba Ramdev had urged the BJP to field Uma Bharti against Sonia Gandhi.
He had said if the BJP agreed to field Bharti from Rae Bareli, he and his followers would campaign for her.
Earlier in the day, Trivedi had said that the BJP would put up “formidable” candidates from Amethi and Rae Bareli.
There are speculations that actress-turned-politician Smriti Irani could be fielded against Rahul Gandhi from Amethi.
Asked whether BJP is considering to field Irani and Bharati, Trivedi had said: “Many suggestions have come from all quarters for certain parliamentary seats. But finally the party takes a decision considering all aspects and suggestions.”
In a tragic incident, Indian Air Force’s new C-130J Super Hercules transport plane – configured for special operations and airborne assault – on Friday crashed near Gwalior, killing all five crew members, including four officers.
Two Wing Commanders, two Squadron Leaders and another crew member were killed in the Super Hercules Special Operations plane crash, Defence PRO told a news agency in Jaipur.
The IAF has ordered court of inquiry into the crash.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh paid his condolences.
“One C-130J aircraft crashed 72 miles (115 km) west of Gwalior air base. The aircraft was airborne from Agra at 1000 hours for a routine flying training mission. A Court of Inquiry has been ordered to investigate into the cause of the accident,” an IAF spokesperson said here.
Police in Jaipur said senior officials, including Superintendent of Police, Karauli, have rushed to the spot along Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh border.
Air Force officials said IAF chief Arup Raha has briefed Defence Minister AK Antony about the crash. Senior officers from the Air Headquarters have been dispatched to the crash site, they said.
Local IAF units have also rushed officers and men in choppers to the accident area, they said.
India had recently inducted six C-130J Super Hercules aircraft, which were bought from the US at the cost of around Rs 6,000 crore (USD 1.1 billion) four years ago.
The incident is shocking since the plane, known as the safest aircraft, has capabilities of landing and taking off even in improvised or short airfields, and without lights.
The home base of the 77 squadron ‘Veiled Vipers’ operating the aircraft is Hindan in Ghaziabad near here.
India had recently deployed a C-130J Super Hercules of the Indian Air Force in Kuala Lumpur to take part in the international search for the missing Malaysian airliner in the South Indian Ocean region.
The aircraft was recently landed on the Daulat Beg Oldie air field near China border and have helped in boosting IAF’s capability to airlift troops closer to the borders in times of emergency.
In a daring attack, unidentified gunmen wearing Army uniforms fired at a private vehicle in Kathua district of the Jammu region on Friday.
Four people, including two terrorists, one Army jawan and one civilian, were killed in the attack and the ensuing encounter.
The gunmen, who are suspected to be Lashkar-e-Toiba terrorists, were intercepted after a two-hour chase near an Army camp and a private college in Kalibari-Janglote belt of Kathua district, triggering a heavy exchange of fire between the two sides. Two terrorists have been killed in the encounter. Meanwhile, an Army jawan, injured in the firing, has succumbed to his injuries.
The area is being searched to locate the third terrorist.
“Three persons wearing Army uniform intercepted a SUV, forced out the occupants and opened fire on them at Tarnah Nallah bridge in Dayala Chak belt of Kathua district (on the Jammu-Pathankote national highway) around 4.30 am Friday” , a police officer said.
One of the injured told police that the only word uttered by terrorist was “utro” (get down) and after which the driver was separated from the passengers.
The terrorists opened fire at the occupants, who were on their way to Gurdaspur, and hijacked the vehicle along with driver Taraseem Singh.
Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police Ashok Prasad told a news agency that immediately after the police control room was informed at 4:47 AM, all check posts and security establishments were alerted.
Despite bad weather, helicopters were pressed into service to locate the vehicle which was finally spotted in a nallah (seasonal canal) outside 111 Rocket division in Kathua, he said.
Meanwhile, Army Chief General Bikram Singh has briefed Defence Minister AK Antony about the encounter, a Defence Ministry official said.
After hijacking the vehicle, the gunmen attacked an Army camp near Janglote in the same district where a gunfight started between them and security personnel, the officer added.
Senior Army officials were informed as a result of which terrorists could not even approach the main gate of the Army camp where an alert guard had engaged them in fire fighting.
The terrorists are suspected to have entered through Tarlah Nallah in order to carry out a suicide attack ahead of Lok Sabha polls.
The same route was used by terrorists to enter into the state on September 26 last year.
A Delhi court has sent a 70-year-old man to seven years in jail for raping his 20-year-old maid, observing that no lenient view can be taken towards him on the ground of his age as he should have thought about it before “resorting to such a shameless act”.
The court held Narender Mohan Mittal, a resident of Dwarka, guilty of raping the girl and threatening her, and said that the offence of rape becomes “more odious” as it was committed by an elderly person on a young and helpless girl.
“The age and state of health of the convict (Mittal), as canvassed by his counsel do not persuade me to take a lenient view against him. It was for the convict to think about his age, health and family members before resorting to such a shameful act.
“In fact, the age of the convict makes the offence committed by him more diabolical. The offence of rape becomes more odious when it is committed by an elderly person upon a young and helpless girl, who is in his custody,” Additional Sessions Judge Virender Bhat said.
Mittal has sought leniency saying he was 70-year-old and was suffering from various ailments like diabetes, heart enlargement, blood pressure and osteoarthritis.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on him.
According to the prosecution, the girl was raped by Mittal in October, 2012 when his wife, son and daughter-in-law were not at home.
Before the incident, the man was watching an obscene movie on the computer and asked her to fetch some water for him and when she returned, he caught her and raped her, the girl had told the court.
After the incident, the man left the house and locked it from outside so that the girl cannot go out and made a call to her threatening her that she would be killed if she narrated the incident to anybody.
Some 500 activists stormed into the Congress office in Lucknow, attacked people and damaged cars.
The activists are believed to be from the Bundelkhand Adhikar Sena, floated by a man called Guddu Rajput, who was reportedly rebuffed in his bid to contest as a Congress candidate from Hamirpur. He is said to be the son of a former MP, Gangacharan Rajput.
The attack went on for an hour before the police stepped in. The Congress says 40 of its workers were injured.
In a shocking incident reported from a remote village in Agra, a 62 year-old man ruthlessly murdered his 55 year old wife whom he suspected of infidelity.
He slit her throat and then repeatedly hit her with an iron rod 20 times till she died on the spot. He even tried to cut her body into pieces. After committing the crime, he locked the house and fled.
Dunger Singh had a fight with Ramvati at 11 pm on Thursday when their daughter-in-law and grandchildren were also present in the house. As the argument heated up, Dunger Singh ordered the daughter-in-law to lock herself into the room with her kids.
They could hear Dunger Singh thrashing Ramvati, however at 4:30 am in the morning, the altercation stopped and the daughter-in-law and kids, without checking what had happened, went off to sleep.
Next morning, when she came out of the room, she saw her mother-in-law lying in a pool of blood and found that they had all been locked up in the house. She shouted for help after which neighbours called the police.
Dunger Singh was reportedly insecure about Ramvati for many years and wouldn’t allow her to stand even at the doorstep. If he ever saw her standing on the doorstep, he would thrash her till she fell unconscious.
