Mumbai North West LS constituency to see four-cornered contest

The Mumbai North West Lok Sabha constituency is set to witness an interesting four-cornered battle between sitting Congress MP Gurudas Kamat, Shiv Sena leader Gajanan Kirtikar, AAP’s Mayank Gandhi and movie director Mahesh Manjrekar from MNS.

Manjrekar’s presence is widely being seen by political observers as dampening Kirtikar’s chances, though the Sena leader has put up a brave face and continued his campaign, telling voters that a split in anti-Congress votes would eventually benefit the ruling Congress-Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) alliance.

In 2009, Gurudas Kamat had won Mumbai North West by more than 38,000 votes, after a with multi cornered contest.

However, with Aam Aadmi Party in the fray this time, besides an Maharashtra Navnirman Sena’s (MNS) candidate like Mahesh Manjrekar, political observers have said that the final result would be unpredictable.

With more than 1.6 million voters, Mumbai North West is home to a predominantly Marathi and Gujarati population, along with North Indians, Muslims and Dalits.
The sprawling constituency comprises elite areas of Juhu and Vile Parle West, which is home to television personalities and Bollywood stars like Amitabh Bachchan.

After the constituency’s delimitation in 2009, Vile Parle East, Santacruz, Bandra and Khar which were part of Mumbai North West were incorporated in the neighboring Mumbai North Central constituency, while Jogeshwari and Goregaon were included in Mumbai North West.

The constituency has always been a Congress stronghold, except in 1977 and 1980, when the Janata Party wave had swept the country and the seat was represented by eminent lawyer Ram Jethmalani on a Janata Party ticket first and later on a BJP ticket.

Congress stalwarts like Shantilal Shah, Hari Ramchandra Gokhale were MPs from here. The late actor-turned-politician Sunil Dutt held sway over the area since his first election in 1984.

He opted out of the race in 1996 and 1998, after his son actor Sanjay Dutt did not get bail under TADA. Congress nominees lost to Shiv Sena’s Madhukar Sarpotdar. During the 2005 by-election, Sunil Dutt’s daughter Priya Dutt was elected, defeating Shiv Sena’s Madhukar Sarpotdar by more than 1.71 lakh votes.
In 2009, Gurudas Kamat of the Congress who has always represented the Mumbai North East Lok Sabha seat had to shift to Mumbai North West.

He defeated Shiv Sena’s Gajanan Kirtikar, a four time legislator from Goregaon by more than 38,000 votes, while the MNS candidate Shalini Thackeray polled more than one lakh votes.

Lack of infrastructure and housing as well as proliferation of slums have been the pressing issues of this constituency.

Though the Versova-Ghatkopar metro railway line is likely to commence soon, there is displeasure that its first phase took more than six years to complete.

However, the Congress said that rehabilitation of people affected by the metro project took up a lot of time. Congress legislator from Versova, Baldev Khosa said that Mumbai North West is a “mini India”, with a mixed population and a developing area.

Hazare to campaign against two former Maharashtra ministers

Slamming political parties for fielding some “corrupt and criminal” candidates, social activist Anna Hazare said that he would campaign against two former ministers in Maharashtra, who have been given Lok Sabha tickets by Shiv Sena and NCP.

“In some constituency or other, most of the political parties have fielded candidates who are accused of corruption and have criminal background. Before the elections, these parties claim that they are strongly against corruption. But now we find a difference in what they say and what they practice,” Hazare told.

Targetting Shiv Sena and NCP, Hazare said he would campaign against Shirdi Shiv Sena candidate, Baban Gholap and Osmanabad NCP candidate, Padamsinh Patil in the Lok Sabha election.

Following an agitation launched by Hazare when Gholap and Patil were in the cabinets, both had been dropped as ministers. Patil was a cabinet member in the Congress government prior to 1995, while Gholap a minister during the Shiv Sena-BJP rule from 1995 to 1999.

“I have all the proof against Gholap. He had been removed from the Maharashtra cabinet during the Shiv Sena-BJP rule following charges of corruption against him. However, despite knowing this, Gholap was given candidature by the Shiv Sena and its chief Uddhav Thackeray.

“Similarly, I was surprised that Padamsinh Patil, the prime accused in Pawanraje Nimbalkar murder case, was given ticket by the NCP. The party has fielded a candidate, who had been in jail,” Hazare said.

“Therefore, I am going to write letters to Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray as well as NCP supremo Sharad Pawar seeking an explanation from them on people’s behalf for fielding Gholap and Patil. I will campaign against Gholap and Patil and will expose their anti-social side,” he added.

Hazare urged the voters to openly ask the leaders of all parties why they give tickets to such criminals and corrupt persons.

Modi to hold ‘Chai Pe Charcha’ on farmers issues on March 20

Narendra Modi will answer queries on farmers’ issues by people across the country and abroad through BJP’s ‘Chai Pe Charcha with NaMo’ programme on March 20.

The BJP’s prime ministerial candidate will interact with public at locations across the country through Internet from Vidarbha in Maharashtra, which has witnessed a large number of farmers’ suicides in the past few years due to successive crop failures and poverty.

Modi had earlier answered public queries on good governance and women’s issues in the previous two such events.

The party is using the ‘tea-seller’ jibe hurled at Modi by his rivals to its advantage to reach out to voters.

The unique election campaign strategy stems from the remark of Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar who had said Modi could not become Prime Minister but could certainly serve tea at the January 17 AICC Session.

Five mediums – DTH, satellite, Internet, mobile phones and social media – will be used for the campaign that entails “share, ask and suggest”.

Julian Assange is not a saint & WikiLeaks has no authority

Again, website WikiLeaks came into limelight, hitting headlines in India over its recent clarifications on BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi. WikiLeaks clarified that the US diplomatic cables released by it in 2011 never described Modi as “incorruptible” (principled) or “the lone honest Indian politician”. Before this declaration, Modi’s social network team and BJP support group randomly circulated a screen short on social media, and that went viral stating “”America is scared of Modi because he is incorruptible”. Later on, WikiLeaks gave clarification over this goof up.

Here the question arises, from where BJP supporters received this piece of cable? They had circulated this in public without checking the authenticity of the piece of cable. Even they might ask the authenticity with WikiLeaks, whose officers are available 24×7 online. Supporters like Preeti Gandhi and many others who are promoting Modi in the cyber world and part of BJP’s IT Cell, had been circulating posters quoting WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. I am surprised to see that how the team is working for Modi without any sense of responsibility. They unnecessarily invited trouble for their leader. Anyhow, Wikileaks has clarified that it never endorsed Modi.

However, Julian Assange also cannot be counted as a saint. There are so many allegations of molestation, rape and other controversies. His team desperately needs money and on their WikiLeaks pages, they are begging for money. They are making very hard efforts to collect donations. At this moment, degrading Modi can fetch them fame, name and also financial perks from rivals. They may even get some donations. Besides this controversy, Modi or BJP have not asked for their certificate nor do they need to give them any. People have made it clear that they want Modi to win as they want good and stable governance which can throw country on the path of progress. It’s the people of this country who will decide the fate of Modi and BJP and not websites like WikiLeaks.

Two years ago, WikiLeaks and its support group campaigned against a handful of financial groups and were perusing people by asking for donations. WikiLeaks is leaking now and is ready to drown. There is no excuse for stealing the documents of the governments, commercial establishments, banks, credit card companies and individuals. WikiLeaks have to spend millions of dollars to defend the legal problems facing Assange and the WikiLeaks in England and the rest of the world. Other hackers have started attacking WikiLeaks the same way Assange attacked others. There are many hackers still languishing in jail for supporting Assange, but so far he never realised his moral duty towards them. Hackers strongly feel that Assange has betrayed them. Assange is not someone who is trying to hunt out a scandal, with honest journalistic approach and efforts, like the Bofors scandal, Harshad Mehta or Telgi scam. He mainly collects information from some disobedient employees in administration, and publishes them to get unsavory reputation. So, let’s be honest and look at the real side of it. Please do not try to portray him as some kind of sufferer for a cause. By doing so, we are doing injustice to real seekers of truth and hardcore journalists, who have given their lives for the profession.

My question to media is, why are they forgetting that Assange has been arrested for sexual crimes? For me Sucheta Dalal, Tarun Tejpal (who is arrested under rape charges recently) and his team and Barkha Dutt like journalists are far greater than Assange. I still get goose bumps when I recollect what Tehelka had gone through after exposing the lacunas in defense forces. Arun Shourie is one of the greatest examples of an honest journalist in India. There are many such heroes who suffered and yet without begging or borrowing they sustained with their ethics and principles. India has too many journalists who fit into this category. Jayalalitha, Madhu Koda, Harshad Mehta and all top scams of India have been exposed by different journalists before any Assange. Let us not make this guy some kind of pioneer for truth seeker or bringing controversies as truth. This happened even earlier and this will continue further. The only thing Assange is using is totally a different modus operandi all together.
It was initially assumed when the molestation and rape charges were filed in Sweden against Julian Assange that, it was a political hit job — an attempt to silence him for publishing stuff that powerful people don’t want to see published. In this case, the main concern the women had about Assange’s behaviour which they reported to police in person related to his lack of interest in using condoms and his refusal to undergo testing, at the women’s request, for sexually transmitted disease. A detailed, sequential account of the women’s alleged happenstances with Assange which in both cases began with consensual sexual contact but later included what the women claimed was non-consensual sex, in which Assange didn’t use a condom was published by The Guardian. Assange was originally sought for questioning in relation to accusations by two women in Sweden whose various claims include having sex with him that was not fully consensual. A prosecutor dropped the investigation, and he left Sweden without being interviewed but was summoned back by an arrest warrant. After that he was not in news from last some months; he emerged again with Modi’s news. We can say, India’s 2014 General Election has given breathe to Assange. Please do not portray Assange as a saint of God or hardcore truth seeker. The fact is that somewhere he is primarily some kind of coercer too. Accreditation by WikiLeaks’ website does not guarantee the merits of Indian leaders. And if he does not endorse, that doesn’t mean the leader does not have a character of his own.

Unfair to point finger at media

Arvind Kejriwal says that he will send “channelwallahs” to lock up is quite understandable. Kejriwal wants channels to give him the same importance as they were showering on him last year and he always wants to be praised and projected as unique. As soon as media started criticizing his double standards and wrong methods of propagating himself like a child, who always craves for attention, AAP started addressing them as corrupt. Kejriwal threatened to send media persons to jail for promoting BJP leader Narendra Modi. In this episode, the TV channels are themselves to be blamed. I saw Barkha Dutt interviewing Kejriwal and her facial expressions suggested as if she is experiencing an orgasm.

On Friday evening, I listened to the comments of one Prem Chandra Misra aired on a television channel. I appreciate his straightforwardness and right analysis. Time and again, I have said that TV channels must educate the masses people residing in semi-rural and rural areas watch it and they are not as educated in comparison to their urban counterparts. The Indian print media has transformed itself as papers in English, Hindi and other regional languages are available for Rs one and two. Even the UK doesn’t offer such a good content at minimal rates. We must appreciate the role of media.

Drawbacks are prevalent in every system all reporters and anchors may not be fully honest and possess equal integrity but to call media bad, partisan and corrupt is wrong and unacceptable. Therefore too much importance should not be given to AAP and split votes. It would be better to make Narendra Modi the prime minister as he possesses good experience of governing Gujarat. He is aware that work has to be done. Modi also knows that the industrialists and the industry needs to be encouraged and provided sops and tax-breaks. If you ask the industrialist Mukesh Ambani to build and operate the plants without meeting the minister and the secretaries, then you are living in fool’s paradise. The role of the media comes into force here. Have the Minister and officers taken Iumpsum money (favours) or are they promoting only a few and suppressing the others?

There is a need for simplifying the process of sanctioning approvals which will pave way for job creation and enable businessmen to carry their business without any fear. The ruling government must also work for the welfare of farmers (not pampered by freebies). If farmers have incurred heavy losses due to crop failure or some natural calamities beyond their control adequate compensation must be offered to them under direct supervision of the minister. The party has no other agenda to offer besides providing free water supply and reducing power tariff. However, the question which arises is how many people will benefit out of it?

Modi does not need certificate from WikiLeaks or Julian Assange to win elections: BJP

modi_advaniReacting to Whistle-blower website WikiLeaks’s recent clarifications on Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Narendra Modi, party leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on Monday said that Modi did not need a certificate from Julian Assange or Wikileaks for winning the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

“The nation does not need a certificate from Julian Assange or Wikileaks about Modi, and neither does Modi to win the elections. What the people want is just good governance,” said Naqvi.

“We have not asked for their certificate nor do they need to give us any. People have made it clear that they want Modi to win as they want good and stable governance which can take thew country on the path of progress,” he said.

WikiLeaks clarified that the US diplomatic cables released by it in 2011 never described Modi as “incorruptible” or “the lone honest Indian politician”.

Supporters had been circulating posters quoting Wikileaks founder Julian Assange saying that “America is scared of Modi because he is incorruptible.”

But Wikileaks clarified that it never endorsed Modi’s honesty.

Congress a sinking ship, even senior leaders deserting it: Jaitley

Terming Congress a “sinking ship”, senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley on Monday said even its senior leaders have decided to desert the party while some are refusing to contest the Lok Sabha elections.

“Faced with odds, even senior leaders have decided to desert the sinking ship. Some are refusing to contest. Others are feigning ill health for not contesting,” the Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha wrote in his blog.

Attacking Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi, he said, the Congress leader “has decided to talk up the morale of his party” in these difficult times.

“He claims that opinion polls are jokes and that the Congress would improve upon its 2009 tally. If this is sheer bravado in order to lift the sinking morale of the Congressman, it is understandable. However, if he genuinely believes this to be true then surely he is completely cut off from reality,” Jaitley, who is BJP’s candidate from Amritsar in Punjab, said.

He said several UPA partners, who had extended their support to the government in the past, are now distancing themselves from the Congress.

Noting that the UPA won a large chunk of seats from Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh in the last elections, he said, “In Tamil Nadu, the Congress is isolated with a single digit percentage votes.” TRS has turned its back on the Congress in Telangana, he added.

Jaitley also claimed that BJP has a positive prospect for alliances in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.

“At the end of the day the Congress goes into the polls without an agenda with inadequate allies and without an effective leadership. If things can go wrong they surely will go wrong,” he said.

Acid attack on witness in rape case against Asaram

Two unidentified men threw acid at one of the witnesses in the rape case against the self-styled godman Asaram, police said.

This is a third attack targeting a witness in the rape cases against Asaram and his son. “A witness in the rape case against Asaram has suffered an acid attack by two men in Vesu area,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police Shobha Bhutda.

“The victim has been identified as Dinesh Bhavchandani (39) who has given a statement against Asaram in the case,” said the officer.

“The incident took place when Bhavchandani was riding to his house near Vesu Royal Residency. Two men on a bike overtook him and threw acid,” she said.

He was taken to a private hospital. This is a third case of attack on a witness in cases of rape against Asaram and his son Narayan Sai.

Asked about police protection for the witnesses, the DCP said, “Most witnesses are given police protection, but these three victims had refused it.”

A Surat-based woman has accused Asaram of repeated rapes and illegal confinement between 1997 and 2006 when she was living at his ashram on the outskirts of Ahmedabad. Her younger sister has lodged a similar complaint against Narayan Sai.

Asaram (72) is currently in a Jodhpur jail after being arrested in September 2013 for sexually assaulting a minor girl at his ashram there.
