Munde faces a tough battle in his home turf

Senior BJP leader and sitting Member of Parliament Gopinath Munde will be contesting the Lok Sabha election for the second time from Beed constituency. However, this time around it won’t be a cakewalk for Munde as the Nationalist Congress Party has fielded Education and state Minister Suresh Dhas against him. On the other hand, Aam Aadmi Party has issued ticket to actor Nandu Jadhav. Munde had won the Lok Sabha election from Beed as there was no strong candidate from the NCP to challenge him. However, the scenario is going to be different this time.

Even though Munde was elected as a MP from this constituency but NCP has a strong foothold in this area. Munde is one of the heavy weight leader of Maharashtra and strong competitor of NCP chief Sharad Pawar. Many leaders quit BJP to join NCP hence the party became weak. NCP is keen to defeat Gopinath Munde this time. For achieving this objective the NCP has fielded Suresh Dhas.

Since there is a sizeable number of Marathi voters in Beed constituency it will prove to be a boon for NCP. On the other hand, people belonging to Vanjari Samaj are in minority which makes Munde’s task more difficult. Since NCP have five MLA from this constituency hence there is a more possibility of their victory. Munde’s elder brother Pandit Anna and nephew MLA Dhananjay Munde have quit BJP to join NCP which has strengthened the party. Munde had contested five Rajya Sabha elections and is a prominent OBC leader who fights for the cause of the community. If OBC workers vote for Munde then he is likely to benefit from it.

Even though Gopinath Munde is confident of a victory in the Lok Sabha election but the road ahead doesn’t look smooth for him. If the Marathi votes swing in favour of Suresh Dhas then it will create trouble for Munde. There are seven lakh Marathi voters in Beed constituency while Vanjari voters comprise three lakhs. If Marathi, and Muslim community vote for Dhas then Munde will have to face defeat hence NCP has fielded strong candidate against him. Six assembly seats exist in this constituency out of which five belong to NCP and one belong to the BJP. Gevrai Pandit (NCP), Majalgoa Salunkhe (NCP), Beed Jaydut Kshirsagar (NCP), Suresh Dhas (NCP), Prithviraj Sathe (NCP), Pankaja Munde (BJP) are the candidates in fray from the Beed constituency.

Statistics of 2009 Lok Sabha election

Gopinath Munde (BJP) – 5,53,994
Ramesh Adskar (NCP) – 4,13,042
Machindra Mhaske (BSP) – 25,284

Kejriwal impresses Mumbaikars

ArvindAam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal began his Lok Sabha election campaigning in Mumbai by commuting in auto and suburban train. At around 11.00 am Kejriwal reached Mumbai as huge crowds arrived to welcome him. Journalists and photographers were present in large numbers to report about Kejriwal’s visit in the metropolis as security too was beefed up. The former Delhi chief minister stepped out of the airport and hired an auto accompanied by AAP spokesperson Preeti Sharma Menon and Dr Hiramal.

As Kejriwal’s autorickshaw left for Andheri station, a contingent of police personnel, media persons and party activists followed his vehicle covering the distance of five kilometers. Even AAP party workers followed the auto and chanted slogans ‘Bharat Mata ki jai’ and ‘Hamara neta kaisa ho, Arvind Kejriwal jaisa ho.”AAP supporters had taken a leave from office to catch a glimpse of their leader Kejriwal.

At around 12.15 pm Kejriwal reached Andheri station and boarded a suburban train to commute towards Churchgate station in south Mumbai. Massive crowds entered inside the compartment to see him. While commuting in the train Kejriwal also interacted with Mumbaikars.

After Kejriwal alighted at Churchgate station people greeted him and cheered for him. He was clad in a skyblue shirt, sleeves partly rolled up, and his trademark AAP cap and dark trousers. In an attempt to meet Kejriwal commuters even broke the metal detectors installed at the station. Later he began campaigning from the constituencies of AAP candidates Meera Sanyal and Medha Patkar.

Kejriwal held a ‘Jhaadu Chalao Yatra’ on the streets of the city accompanied by Medha Patkar and Meera Sanyal. He also waved the crowds by raising his hands. Kejriwal also met Mumbaikars to know more about the problems faced by them.

A man became so excited that he attempted to kiss Kejriwal but he remained unsuccessful due to the presence of massive crowds..

Talking to AV, Abhishek Shah who attended Kejriwal’s rally said, “I am pleased to see Arvind Kejriwal in Mumbai. For the first time, I had noticed so many crowds to watch any politician. I pray for the success of AAP party which will pave way for good governance in the country.”

Ramesh Singh a Khar resident said, “I am impressed with the simplicity of Kejriwal who has brought the corruption issue to the forefront. If AAP party comes to power then corruption can be eliminated from our country.”

The AAP chief urged the gathered crowd to go from house to house and asked people to vote for the jhadoo.

AAP ka Arvind in Mumbai

Today, Mumbai has witnessed new waves in politics. Aam Aadmi Party supporters, the police and some people of the city had a memorable time when Kejriwal came to the city. When he came out of the departure gate of Terminal 1A of the Mumbai domestic airport at 10.45 am, party supporters had formed a human chain to escort their leader into an auto. However, Kejriwal took a small bypass. Media people were running around for his glimpses, some wanted to click his photographs while electronicwalas were trying to get his byte. A few restless camerapersons and reporters also got into the autorickshaw reserved for him and had to be told to get down. Media was present in large numbers, so were his supporters, police personnel, party workers, all wanted to shake hands with their ‘Aam Aadmi’. On a working day, I never thought that in city like Mumbai, Kejriwal will ever have such response. No matter what people say about him but the ground reality is that Kejriwal is largely accepted and liked by common man of this country. Looking at his popularity, I think people will give him a chance to taste the power. A lot of Indians had pinned their hopes on this man. For me, Arvind was a good guy at Jantar Mantar, was a revolutionary but he is immature in Indian politics. Indians see him as one of the common man like them, who is setting new trends in politics. By seeing Kejriwal’s simplicity, many hearts moved in his favour.

Very neatly dressed up Kejriwal, took the three wheeler to the Andheri Railway Station and kept telling the auto-driver, Ranjith Kamti, to go slow as media continued to hound him en-route. Then he boarded the city’s lifeline, Mumbai suburban local, to travel to Churchgate station in south Mumbai. The moment he reached Churchgate station, there was chaos; some people vandalised metal detector, media constantly were showing a negative report, stating AAP’s members vandalised public property. Actually, there was too much crowd at the station and managing everyone through that thin metal detector was not possible; crowd was over enthusiastic and chaos occurred. There are many political parties which are disturbed with the existence of AAP and their surprising emergence and success in the past. Power of Common man is always abused by traditional ruling supremacy; they never approved anyone breaking their monarchy. Destruction, attacks and chaos is not common man’s job, which is executed under political influences. Crowd has actually no face, but news headlines were constantly pouncing at AAP, social network was busy condemning the Churchgate incident. “News” is just noise these days. Surprisingly, group of people were invited to speak to media by keeping them in waiting at the corner till Kejriwal arrives, then the same group was giving bytes to TV channels, saying how annoyed they are with Kejriwal, but news channels forgot to show the larger side of success story of AAP rally in Mumbai. Anyways, other people refused to comment on this to media, because they were not harassed. Everyone was in a rush.

However, AAP supporters who accompanied Kejriwal did not damage property and metal detectors at the Church gate. The supporters are said to have behaved in an ‘unruly’ manner, causing inconvenience to the public, but it was just media created story. Time and again, many big politicians visit this city and same kind of traffic and chaos happens. Why to blame Kejriwal alone? People should think whether they want to put their trust in AAP or media channels which are biased toward other parties.

Kejriwal passed through AAP leader Mayank Gandhi’s constituency while on his way to the station. Gandhi is contesting the Lok Sabha polls against Congress MP Gurudas Kamat. AAP candidates Meera Sanyal, a former banker, and activist Medha Patkar are respectively contesting from the two constituencies. AAP, contesting its first Lok Sabha election, is looking at Mumbai as a major target after Delhi, where it formed a government for 49 days with outside support from the Congress. The party is also targeting the Maharashtra Assembly elections due later this year. Kejriwal is also scheduled to attend a fund-raising dinner at a luxury hotel in Nagpur on Thursday, where the price tag is reportedly Rs. 10,000 per person.

Kejriwal has one quality that hardly any Indian politician can claim: honesty. Also, he is an IIT graduate so obviously he is very intelligent. He is still politically immature and he has quite a bit to learn. Once he gets over the learning curve, he will be unstoppable. Let’s give this man a chance. We have given enough and more opportunities to the mainstream parties and its leaders. 99 per cent of them prove to be corrupt and capable of pulling India back. Give him chance, if he fails, throw him away. I think people are awake, they clearly see the difference between him and other political party leaders. The more BJP-Congress alliance blindly accuses him of publicity stunts, the more he wins the hearts of the people.

Remember, media and politicians never do anything without any reason. There is always a hidden agenda or motive in their moves. People should analyse and choose the best leader for themselves. In a way, Arvind has come a long way fighting against all odds and made it a great success. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) released its fifth list of 56 candidates for the Lok Sabha elections, which include eight from Bihar and nine from Uttar Pradesh. His party’s fourth list of 61 candidates include  journalist Ashish Khetan and satirist Bhagwant Mann. After the fifth list, the AAP has so far has announced 187 candidates for the general polls. Let’s see whether they make to power or break the power in 2014 Lok Sabha.

Voting for AAP means voting for BJP- Nirupam

NirupamWhile addressing a press conference Congress Lok Sabha MP Sanjay Nirupam took a jibe at Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal who had arrived in Mumbai for campaigning for the Lok Sabha election. Nirupam criticised the AAP party for disrupting law and order by protesting outside BJP office in Delhi. Nirupam questioned Arvind Kejriwal’s integrity and said, “Kejriwal is creating chaos in the city by travelling in auto and suburban trains. He always alleges that Congress and BJP are corrupt parties but he himself is yet to provide details of the funds received by his party. He also had arrived in Mumbai in plane. AAP doesn’t have any foothold in North Mumbai.”

Replying to the allegations made by opposition parties about his poor attendance record in the parliament, Nirupam clarified, “I have 89 per cent attendance and have campaigned in Rajasthan during my absence from parliament. “

Attacking the BJP, Nirupam said, “BJP claims that it is a strong party but its leader Nitin Gadkari had met Raj Thackeray whose party workers had assaulted north Indian students and created a law and order problem in Mumbai. I had constructed a urinal and college for women. I have worked for the welfare of all communities and development of my constituency. I also have laid pipelines in Malwani and Gorai.”
“Ram Naik had not performed any work when he was the minister of state for railways. But I have worked for the development of Borivali station. BJP is claiming that Muslims are supporting it but the community has always voted for Congress. The party is creating a rift between Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray” added Nirupam.

BJP’s secret pact with MNS will prove counterproductive

The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena has always claimed itself to be the champion of Marathi cause. Few years ago, the party came into limelight after assaulting north Indian students and drivers. Parties like Bharatiya Janata Party and Congress used to condemn the attacks for gaining political mileage out of this issue. As a result of this the saffron party had improved its performance in the 2009 Lok Sabha election held in Uttar Pradesh. Recently, former BJP president Nitin Gadkari had met MNS chief Raj Thackeray and asked him to resist from contesting polls. Shiv Sena was miffed with the growing proximity between BJP and MNS and even asked the former to clarify its stand about it. By shaking hands with MNS the saffron party has betrayed the north Indians.

The MNS had played a spoilsport in the 2009 Lok Sabha election by splitting the Marathi votes thereby causing huge damage to BJP and Shiv Sena. Thus the Congress-NCP benefited out of it as they retained power in the state. The BJP doesn’t want to avert such situation this time hence they are trying to woo Raj Thackeray.

Raj Thackeray announced that MNS won’t field its candidate from those constituencies where BJP is contesting election. He also declared his support for BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi. A question which arises here is how can BJP support a party which had taken an aggressive stand against north Indians in Mumbai and Maharashtra? Is the party only trying to get closer to MNS keeping in mind the forthcoming Lok Sabha election? The BJP will have to face adverse consequences if it forms an alliance with MNS. If the saffron party is really bothered about the welfare of north Indians then they should keep a safe distance from the MNS. The MNS is a small party and is yet to gain a foothold across Maharashtra.

The chairman of the Uttar Pradesh state campaign committee Rampati Ram Tripathi criticized the BJP’s decision to approach MNS ahead of the Lok Sabha election. Tripathi is learnt to have informed BJP leaders in Mumbai that the move align with MNS will prove costly for the party in northern states such as Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. According to the newspaper quote given by Tripathi, he said, “You might win two seats here in Mumbai. However, you might lose more seats in other states,” His fears stemmed from Raj Thackeray’s anti-north Indians stance potentially hurting the BJP in states such as Uttar Pradesh and Bihar where it’s trying to achieve a sizeable tally in order to breach the 200-seat mark. Thus a sizeable portion of north Indians might not vote for the saffron party.

Why are actors doing fewer films?

There was a time in the 70’s and 90’ when an actor used to have four to five releases per year. Superstar Amitabh Bachchan on an average had three to four releases per year. During those days actors used to work in many films at a time and also work in various shifts. Popular actors used to remain so busy that they didn’t have any dates to spare. However, a drastic change has been witnessed in the film industry these days. With the entry of corporates huge money is being invested for making a movie today. We can say that the industry has become commercialised and box office returns matter a lot more today instead of merely receiving critical acclamation. Today a movie makes huge revenue from overseas markets hence the stakes have become higher.

Most of the films are easily crossing 100 crores while some make 200 crores and Dhoom 3 has made it into the 500 crore club. Thus there is lot at stake in the movie making business today which can make or break the fortunes of an actor. Earlier actors used to work for a fixed remuneration known as star fee but today A grade actors are demanding a share in profits out of the business made by their films at the box office. Many of them have turned producers so more money is pumped into the industry.

Therefore most of the actors like Aamir Khan, Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan, Shahid Kapur, are only doing one or two films per year. Aamir Khan was the first actor to start the one film a year policy in bollywood. The actor had a huge gap of four years between Lagaan and Mangal Pandey. Later, many other actors like Hrithik Roshan and Shahrukh Khan too have started emulating him.

Today an actor earns money through endorsements which further enhances his brand value. Earlier, few flop films didn’t make much difference to the career of movie stars. But today since large money is invested in a project there is immense pressure on every actor to deliver hits at the box office. Audience have to wait for a long period of time to watch the movie of their favourite actor. Hence there is more curiosity among viewers to view the film.

Today actors are also expected to be involved in the promotion of their films besides acting. They appear in reality shows, comedy shows etc to promote their movies. The first few weeks run are enough for a film to earn a decent profit at the box office. Even the timing of the movie’s release is decided in advance many times even before the cast is finalised as it happened in the case of film Shuddi. Finally, actors have realised that they will have to pay attention towards the script and banner to boost their career. Thus quality has become more important for actors today instead of quantity.

Rahul wants ‘reluctant’ senior leaders to contest Lok Sabha polls

Lok-Sabha-pollsThere is trouble brewing for the Congress as the party’s Central Election Committee meets to decide on the second list of candidates for the Lok Sabha elections. Sources say that while Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi wants senior leaders to contest polls, many of them are reluctant.

Sources say Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Manish Tewari is not keen on contesting from Ludhiana. Finance minister P Chidambaram too is not keen, but he prefers his son Karthi Chidambaram to contest from Sivaganga and prefers a Rajya Sabha route for himself.

Sources say even Rajasthan state Congress chief Sachin Pilot is not keen on contesting. His seat Ajmer is also being considered for cricketer turned politician Mohammad Azharuddin.

On Tuesday, Tamil Nadu screening committee meeting took place where Jayanthi Natarajan was asked to contest the Lok Sabha polls. However, sources say she too is not keen.

Meanwhile, those in the running for the Lok Sabha elections are tainted leaders including former Railway Minister Pawan Bansal, former Maharashtra CM Ashok Chavan and Suresh Kalmadi, say sources.

On Bansal, the Congress has said that any individual who is not an accused nor has been chargesheeted cannot be called tainted on mere perception. On Chavan and Kalmadi, the Congress said that they haven’t been nominated as yet nor has a ticket been denied.

RSS was not involved in Mahatma’s killing: Advani

The RSS was not involved in the killing of Mahatma Gandhi, BJP patriarch LK Advani said in a blog, quoting Gandhi’s grandson Rajmohan Gandhi on Wednesday.

Advani’s blog ‘Mahatma was perhaps not right’ on Wednesday also said Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s contributions have not been acknowledged.

“This book by Rajmohan Gandhi has effectively nailed the Congress party’s slanderous campaign against the RSS in respect of Mahatmaji’s assassination,” Advani wrote.
The BJP leader said that Rajmohan Gandhi in his book on Patel quoted a letter dated Feb 27, 1948, written by Patel to Jawaharlal Nehru.

The letter said: “I have kept myself almost in daily touch with the progress of the investigation regarding Bapu’s assassination case. I devote a large part of my evening to discussing with Sanjeevi (head of intelligence and inspector general of police, Delhi) the day’s progress and giving instructions to him on any points that arise. All the accused have given long and detailed statements… It emerges clearly from these statements that the RSS was not involved in it at all.”

Advani said that anyone who analyses history “readily feels that if Gandhiji had chosen Sardar Patel instead of Pandit Nehru to become free India’s first prime minister, it is quite likely the history of those early years may have been quite different”.

He also quoted Rajmohan Gandhi’s book on Patel, saying “while acknowledgements are fulsome in the case of Nehru, and dutiful in the case of Gandhi, they are niggardly in the case of Patel”.

“But the opinion of some that the Mahatma had been less than fair to Vallabhbhai was a factor in my decision to attempt to write the latter’s life. If a wrong had been perpetrated, some reparation from one of the Mahatma’s grandsons would be in order,” the book said.

The BJP patriarch added: “For Rajmohan, Gandhiji’s grandson, to say openly that Gandhiji had perhaps not been right in the decision he took about prime ministership, and, so merited some ‘reparation’ from one of his grandsons not only revealed his own greatness and magnanimity but also endorsed the general view that Sardar would have been a more appropriate choice.”

Shinde vows to avenge Chhattisgarh Maoist attack; combing operation launched

Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde on Wednesday announced that the National Investigation Agency will probe into the attack on Tuesday in which 15 security men and a civilian were killed in a thickly-forested area of Chhattisgarh.

Earlier in the day, Shinde and Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh paid homage to the security men who were killed when Maoists sprang the deadly ambush.

Condemning the attack, Shinde said the attack by the Maoists was on the CRPF team which was going to ensure access to road during the upcoming General Elections. There will be no change in election dates because of the attack, added Shinde. He further vowed to avenge this attack and promised detailed investigation into the security lapses.

The Home Minister though said there was intelligence yet it was not specific. He added that Maoists are scared that their importance is reducing.

“So many jawans have lost their lives in the attack, we will take revenge…the central and state forces are working together on it,” Shinde said.

“We had given the earlier case where leaders were killed to the NIA and similarly this case will also be probed by the NIA,” added Shinde, referring to the May 2013 Maoist attack in which 27 people, including senior Congress leaders, were massacred.

Addressing the media, Shinde said: “Naxal movement is gradually weakening and their numbers are dwindling while (Assembly) Elections were successfully held in Bastar region recently…they are now afraid”.

Shinde arrived here early Wednesday and held a brief meeting with Raman Singh and State Home Minister Ramsevak Paikra over the incident and later went to Jagdalpur.

Tributes were paid to the martyrs at the police parade ground in Jagdalpur, the administrative headquarters of Bastar district this morning, senior police officers told a news agency.

Shinde, Raman Singh, Chhattisgarh Governor Shekhar Dutt, members of the state Cabinet paid their respect to the martyrs at the wreath-laying ceremony.

Immediately afterwards, Shinde and Singh left for his office, where the Union Home Minister would hold a meeting with the officials and review the situation.

Meanwhile, police officials in Sukma said a combing operation has been launched to trace the Naxals involved in yesterday’s attack.

Also, Singh has refused to tender his resignation in the wake of the attack, saying Naxalism poses a challenge to the nation and the Maoist attack could not be seen from a political point of view.

Over 200 guerrillas ambushed with indiscriminate fire and bomb attack a patrol of 50-55 men from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and state police on a remote stretch of a forested road in Gheeram Ghati in Sukma district, about 500 km south of Raipur in the Bastar region.

The Maoists then walked away with AK-47 assault rifles of the slain security personnel.

After the attack, Shinde had warned that the Centre will take the Naxals head.

“I condemn this attack on the CRPF and the police of Chhattisgarh. We are taking it very seriously and we will fight against the Naxal movement.”

“We will fight against Naxal (Maoist) movement,” Shinde had said, adding it cannot be immediately said “whose failure” it was.

Ram Kripal Yadav joins BJP, calls Narendra Modi ‘brother’

Rebel Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Ram Kripal Yadav, who is keen to contest from the Patliputra Lok Sabha seat in Bihar against RJD chief Lalu Prasad’s daughter Misa Bharti, on Wednesday joined the BJP.

BJP president Rajnath Singh made the announcement at the party headquarters here.

The former aide of RJD chief Lalu Prasad thanked Rajnath Singh and the “man who is defining the next era of our nation Mr Narendra Modi”.

Vowing to work for the BJP as a grassroot worker, Yadav accused his mentor Lalu Prasad of promoting his family instead of acting for social justice.

Yadav, who had been a close aide of RJD chief Lalu Prasad, joined BJP in the presence of party president Rajnath Singh and senior leaders from Bihar including Ravi Shankar Prasad.

Welcoming him into the party fold, Rajnath Singh said Yadav has been RJD’s secretary general for the last 17 years and had decided to support the BJP.

Expressing his gratitude to the BJP leadership for accepting him into the party, Yadav said he will work for the party not as a leader but as a worker, which he has been for the last 35 years of his political life.

Yadav, a former legislator and a Rajya Sabha MP, accused Lalu Prasad of “promoting” his family over his party workers, who he said, were feeling stifled.

“RJD has moved away from its core values. Lalu gave precedence to his family over party and cadres. I was in a dilemma on what to do for the last few days and then decided to quit the party and join BJP for the sake of giving social justice,” he said.

“I have never been a leader. I have been a common worker in my 35 years of working in the RJD. The RJD workers in Bihar are feeling suffocated as family is being given importance. I felt social justice should be taken forward and not family justice,” Yadav said in the presence of top BJP leadership.

Supporting ‘brother’ Modi, Yadav said he was proud that BJP had nominated a tea-seller coming from a backward class as its prime ministerial candidate and vowed to strive hard to make him the Prime Minister. In saying so, he also touted his own humble background.

Lauding Modi for improving the plight of Gujarat Muslims, Yadav accused the Nitish Kumar government of raising the bogey of communalism for the sake of votes and not doing any development work.

He claimed there has been no development of Muslims in Bihar and said, “Muslims have started realising that they have been used as a vote bank. The way Muslims have progressed in Gujarat is an example.”
