Congress will begin seat sharing discussions with NCP in Maharashtra in the next few days for the Lok Sabha polls, party’s state unit Chief Manikrao Thakre said.
Swapping of seats is also likely, he said.
“Congress is expected to stake claim over Hingoli, Amravati, Kolhapur and Osmanabad parliamentary seats held by NCP while the latter is likely to demand seats like Raigad and Jalna (held by Congress),” party sources said.
NCP led by Sharad Pawar, who parted ways with Congress in 1999 on the foreign origin issue of Sonia Gandhi, is sharing power with her party in Maharashtra for over 14 years and has been a part of the UPA at the Centre since 2004.
The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has said it will field candidates on at least 22 seats in the state.
The tussle between the parties on seat sharing is on with reports that Thakre is in favour of slashing NCP quota from 22 seats to 19. Congress had expressed it would contest 29 Lok Sabha seats.
Maharashtra sends 48 MPs to Lok Sabha, which is second largest after Uttar Pradesh.
Anarchy may have to precede the passage to a people’s democracy. AAP may be the chapter one in that passage. Shatter from within and smash from nothing systems that do not work for the people cannot be for the people and of the people. Arvind Kejriwal’s decision to invite the public to join his protest at the ‘high-security zone’ worsened the law and order situation in the area. The Delhi Police were forced to deploy extra security in the area. Arvind Kejriwal, while protesting over his demand for the suspension of Delhi Police personnel, who have been accused by his administration of dereliction of duty, said ninety per cent of the crimes take place with the knowledge of the police. I agreed with him, in India, police department needs urgent reform, most of the time police is behaving like ‘Gundas’ in uniform. I want to mention one of my experiences here; my gold chain was snatched from the neck in suburban local train between the Goregaon and Jogeshwari station. I went to the Railway Police for registering a complaint, they were not ready to register a complaint first but after lots of struggle my complaint was entertained and I was asked to wait till I get a call from the police, on further developments. After few days, I visited the police station to get the status of the complaint but no use. Then after some time almost every day I was visiting the police station.
Finally, one day the irritated police officer asked me to produce the design and receipt of purchase of my chain. On the 15th day after the incidence, I furnished the documents demanded by them. On 20th day, they got familiar with my face and they also came to know that I am a journalist. I lost my patience, and decided to do story on this pathetic behaviour of the police. However, on that day, the officer in charge immediately summoned some history-sheeter chain snatchers who used to commit robbery in suburban trains to the police station. Officer asked me to do identity parade of these history-sheeters. When I nodded my head in no then they showed me photo album and asked me to identify from that if any faces out of these were around at the time of incidence. Finally, I identified one of the women who were in train but not around me.
Police summoned her, called her to ‘chauki’ (police beat) and interrogate her in their typical language. The lady returned from there, like this four days passed away. Finally, we came to know about the chain snatcher through a jeweller. I don’t know how police reached to that jeweller but my chain was sold to him. Till today, police is searching for the criminal. During this period, I encountered many sources in police chauki, who told me police is aware of each gang, jewellers and traders who buy stolen cell phones, gold chains and watches. These gangs work area wise. Police is very well connected with these gangs and they get regular Hafta from them too. Let it be Delhi or Mumbai or any other places, police are working hand in gloves with criminals around.
Kejriwal’s point is right. Police is never clueless about the local crime and criminals. Almost, 90 per cent of the crimes take place in the knowledge of the police which is extremely unfortunate and shameful. Kejriwal has set Dharna for public interest, he is not doing it for personal benefits and that the people protesting there wanted to convey, that if any woman in the nation was raped, somebody had to take the responsibility. Yes, somebody is responsible. If a Danish woman is raped; the SHO of the area must be suspended. If a woman is burnt alive; the SHO of that area must be suspended. If a sex racket is going on; the ACP and the SHO of the area must be suspended. Unless harsh steps are not taken against police, no reform or change can take place. Delhi Government must be given charge of the city’s police force which currently reports to the central government via the Home Ministry. This demand comes after last week’s gang-rape of a Danish tourist, and a controversial midnight raid by Law Minister Somnath Bharti in South Delhi’s Khirki Extension area. The minister asked the police to arrest Ugandan citizens and raid a house where he alleged they were trafficking drugs and prostitute rackets are going on. The police refused Bharti by saying that they had no warrant against them.
Both the BJP and the Congress have severely criticised Kejriwal for his unprecedented protest. The BJP called it “anarchy”, while the Congress said he was “taking the law in his own hands”. According to the police, they also had to deal with false allegations and abusive languages from the protestors. Protest was right but that would have some direction. AAP ministers should keep in mind that they are not activists but respectable ministers in Delhi government and need to follow protocols. Meanwhile, Delhi police rather than cooperating with a long awaited honest government, were behaving immaturely. I am sure; every Delhiite must have witnessed prostitution and drug rackets going on in public with Police PCRs standing hardly 50mts away. Obviously, it can’t happen without any bureaucratic support. The colony people are frustrated with it. What about the human rights of those living in the Khirki extension? There are thousands of law abiding citizens with children of vulnerable age group. What human rights did to Nirbhaya that night, when she was sexually assaulted? Delhi government is taking steps to eliminate the scourge of immoral promiscuity, which goes on under the watchful eyes of the Delhi police. Humans have a right to work honestly and earn decent money. No society would knowingly allow these activities. Thanks to the Delhi government this has now come to the open. They are using all the cards to dampen the enthusiasm of the new government. Delhi police has now turned into a national shame. Delhi Police want to tarnish the image of AAP government. We really don’t deserve great people like Arvind Kejriwal as we only want to believe and expect system to get rectified magically. These old parties’ moron leaders want to sit in secretariat and they want us to beg them for each and everything. Let rapes continued to happen in Delhi till HM Shinde decides to transfer Delhi police to Delhi government or till our MPs grant full statehood to Delhi. Everybody wants a ‘Bhagat Singh’ but in a neighbour’s house. And if one raise up, we are terming him as anarchist. Neo-Colonialists will leave as own when neo 1947 comes. It is foolish to think beyond the realms of current rotten politics.
In a major relief for the parents in Delhi, fed up with lofty donation demands from schools in lieu of admission of their tiny tots, the nursery admissions will begin under fresh guidelines from Tuesday.
In what is set to deal a heavy blow to unaided private schools, the 20% management quota has been scrapped under the fresh guidelines which were issued by Delhi Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung on December 18.
According to reports, in case the schools were caught demanding donation, they will have to pay a fine ten times more the amount.
The good news for the parents came after a Delhi High Court turned down a plea by unaided private schools seeking to stay the fresh guidelines.
In its order granting nod to the new guidelines for nursery admissions, a Delhi High Court bench comprising Chief Justice NV Ramana and Justice Rajiv SahaiEndlaw said that the new norm will not be delayed as it would create “confusion and would be detrimental to the interest of children and parents”.
In their plea, the group of unaided private schools (Action Committee Unaided Recognised Private Schools and Forum for promotion of quality education for all) wanted the court to stay the guidelines for the session 2014-15, adding that it encroached upon their autonomy in selecting the students.
According to the fresh norms as issued by the Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung, 70 points will be accorded to those children living within 8-km distance from the school, under neighbourhood criteria.
Besides these, the applicants who have sibling studying in the same school will get 20 points.
Also, the 20% management quota has been scrapped, leaving behind a 5% quota for girls in theco-ed schools 25% seats reserved for economically weaker sections.
The Delhi Police on Monday said the autopsy report of SunandaPushkar indicated that the 52-year-old died of a drug overdose.
Quoting its sources in Delhi Police, NDTV reported on Monday that Union minister ShashiTharoor was given a clean chit in his wife Sunanda’s death based on a witness testimony.
The theory had been a subject of great speculation since Sunday, when sources said investigators had recovered three empty strips of the sedative alprax (0.5mg) from the hotel room where Sunanda had died.
Medical experts say that consumption of alprax – a medicine that should only be sold when prescribed by a doctor – in large quantities at a time hampers the functioning of the brain, and can cause a person to slip into coma.
A three-member AIIMS team had performed the post-mortem examination on Sunanda, the wife of junior HRD Minister ShashiTharoor, on Saturday. Following preliminary tests, team member Dr Adarsh Kumar had revealed to the media later the same day that her death was “sudden and unnatural”.
The final report was submitted to subdivisional magistrate (SDM) Alok Sharma on Monday. Refusing to talk about the findings, Sharma said: “The report is sealed, but I will submit my report to the police by tomorrow (Tuesday) afternoon.” The police, however, said the report ruled out the presence of alcohol in Sunanda’s system.
Sunanda, who married Tharoor in 2010, died on Friday at a luxury hotel in the Capital’s Chanakyapuri area. Her body was discovered by her husband around 8.30pm on his return to the hotel after attending an AICC event.
Sunanda’s death came after a very public spat with her husband that saw her accuse him of having an affair with Pakistani journalist MehrTarar. In a series of scathing tweets, the businesswoman had also hit out at Tarar for “stalking” her husband, sparking an ugly exchange between the two women.
Meanwhile, Home Minister SushilkumarShinde has asked the Delhi Police to conduct an expeditious probe into the Sunanda’s death.
Referring to the letter Tharoor wrote him on Sunday, Shinde said: “He (Tharoor) has written to me and sought an expeditious probe. I have already talked to the persons concerned and they are doing it.” In his letter, Tharoor had expressed horror at the “reckless speculation rampant in the media” regarding the circumstances preceding his wife’s death.
On Monday, the former UN undersecretary general and Sunanda’s only son Shiv, 21, visited Hardwar to perform the final ritual of cremation – the immersion of her ashes in the Ganga.
BharatiyaJanata Party (BJP) leader NarendraModi has surged way ahead in the prime ministerial race ahead of 2014 General Elections, according to a survey conducted by a leading news channel.
The survey says that Modi is the most popular candidate for the top post with 30 percent of the electorate likely to vote for him. Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi was favoured by 9 percent, Delhi Chief Minister ArvindKejriwal by 3 percent and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar by 15 percent. Incumbent PM Manmohan Singh is the least popular with only one percent votes.
In what can be said as a big setback for Janata Dal (United) in Bihar, BJP under the leadership of Modi is expected to bag 16-24seats. The JD(U) 7-13 seats, Lalu Prasad Yadav’sRashtriyaJanata Dal (RJD) is likely to win 6-10 seats. The Congress may get 0-4 seats.
The Gujarat Chief Minister’s magic seems to be working for the BJP in Jharkhand as well, with the survey projecting the main Opposition party to win 40 percent of the votes in the state.
However, there is bad news for the BJP in West Bengal where it is projected to bag only 0-2 seats. Bengal sends 40 MPs to Parliament. Trinamool Congress under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee will improve its tally and is projected to win 20-28 seats. Left Front is expected to win 7-13 seats and Congress 5-9.
Naveen Patnaik-led BijuJanata Dal (BJD) in Odisha is expected to present a good show and is likely to bag 10-16 seats. Congress will manage 3-9 and BJP 0-4 seats.
With the Congress making it clear that party Vice-president Rahul Gandhi, though not being officially anointed the prime ministerial candidate, will lead the pre-election campaign for the 2014 LokSabha polls, the question now is: what role will his sister Priyanka Gandhi play?
As per sources, Priyanka – in whom many Congress leaders and party supporters see a future PM – is likely to play a crucial role in devising poll strategy, away from media glare.
She is expected to take charge of backroom management of Rahul Gandhi’s campaign. With Rahul as the face of Congress in 2014 polls, Priyanka’s task becomes all the more important.
Sources said Priyanka features on the Congress’ poll strategy document, Vision 2014, as well.
Her main tasks, apart from managing brother Rahul’s poll affairs, include providing key inputs for election strategy management and galvanising the party cadre.
Priyanka has reportedly already been holding meetings with key Congress functionaries, including Youth Congress leaders.
If reports are to be believed, Rahul’s speech at the January 17 AICC session – considered to be one of his best so far – was prepared in consultation with Priyanka.
Just two days before, on January 15, Priyanka had attended a key Congress meeting where brother Rahul and mother Sonia were present along with some select party leaders.
While the Congress has officially stated that Priyanka’s role in the 2014 elections will be restricted only to campaigning in Raebareli and Amethi, murmurs are already there that she is getting ready for a wider, more meaningful say in the party.
Sri Lankan Navy on Tuesday arrested 25 Indian fishermen for allegedly poaching in the country’s waters, officials said.
Naval spokesman KosalaWarnakulasuriya said 25 fishermen have been arrested north of Jaffna’s Delft island during the wee hours of today. Their six trawlers were also seized.
The fishermen are to be handed over to the police at Kankesanturai harbour.
The arrests followed talks between Agriculture Minister SharadPawar and Sri Lankan Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources RajithaSenaratne in New Delhi last week on the thorny issue of fishermen.
Both countries decided free all fishermen in their custody and release their vessels after the talks.
The arrests come ahead of a meeting scheduled for January 27 between a committee appointed to work out a joint mechanism.
Reacting to Delhi Chief Minister ArvindKejriwal led protest demanding suspension of Delhi Police personnel, who have been accused by his administration of dereliction of duty, BharatiyaJanata Party (BJP) leader Vijay Goel on Tuesday said that the AamAadmi Party (AAP) was behaving like Maoists.
“The way AAP and ArvindKejriwal are holding this protest, is not going to be beneficial for the public. The steps they are taking are of Maoist approach,” said Goel.
He further said that he found the Congress equally responsible for the situation.
“I find the Congress equally responsible for the whole drama that is being created. On one side, they have extended their support to AAP, and on the other side they are saying that they are against them,” he said.
Kejriwal says the Delhi Government must be given charge of the city’s police force which currently reports to the central government via the Home Ministry. His demand comes after last week’s gang-rape of a Danish tourist, and a controversial midnight raid by Law Minister Bharti in South Delhi’s Khirki Extension area.
The minister asked the police to arrest Ugandan citizens and raid a house where he alleged they were trafficking drugs and sex. The police refused, saying they had no warrant.
Braving the Delhi winter, Kejriwal slept on a mattress at the side of the road, right next to his blue Wagon R.
Four Metro stations have been shut near North Block. The police had asked Mr Kejriwal to shift his protest to JantarMantar, but their attempts failed.
Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde, after the cabinet meeting yesterday, met the Prime Minister and apprised him of the developments and the planned action.
Kejriwal has rejected Shinde’s offer that appropriate action will be considered against three Delhi Police cops the Chief Minister wants suspended after an inquiry. He has demanded the immediate suspension of the cops, who he has accused of dereliction of duty.
The AAP has also alleged that one of their ministers, SaurabhBharadwaj, had been arrested and made to sit in a bus.
The Delhi Police has denied the charge. They said Bharadwaj had sat in the bus of his own accord. The cops disconnected the public address system in an attempt to make the protesters shift to JantarMantar, an area earmarked for demonstrations.
Both the BJP and the Congress have severely criticised Kejriwal for his unprecedented protest.
The BJP called it “anarchy”, while the Congress said he was “taking the law in his own hands.
Shinde has asked Kejriwal to “maintain the dignity of the Chief Minister’s office.”
Haryana Roadways employees went on a four-day strike from today against the Haryana government’s proposal to issue permits to private bus operators. The strike will continue till January 23.
The Haryana Roadways Employees Coordination Committee who has called the four-day strike, has opposed privatisation, outsourcing, contract or PPP system, claimed that the strike was complete on the first day. Passengers were reduced to a harassed lot as all the 34 Volvo buses and more than 300 non-AC buses — run by Haryana Roadways — remained off the roads. Passengers who had booked tickets in advance had to get their tickets cancelled.
Those passengers who had to visit Delhi and other places in Haryana had to opt for buses operated by Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) or Punjab Roadways, which were overcrowded. YogeshKhari and Kapil, who came from Delhi and had to return today only, said: “We did not have any idea that there would be a strike. We wanted to travel by Volvo, but were told that no buses from Haryana Roadways will ply today.” Another passenger, Pawan, who came to Chandigarh for an official work said: “I have to reach Delhi urgently. But none of the buses of Haryana Roadways are plying and the buses of Punjab Roadways were so crowded that I could not board them. Now, I am stranded.”
All the passengers who had tickets in buses operated by Haryana Roadways had to shift to those run by Punjab, which led to the overcrowding. Temzing, who came from Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh and had to go to Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi, said: “My brother is coming from USA and I have to meet him. I had a booking in a Volvo bus, but after reaching here I came to know that there will be no buses plying today. Now I am going to railway station and will check if I can get a ticket in some train.”
Passengers at the Panchkula bus station also faced lots of problem due to the strike. VijitHooda, a Class XI student of a government school in Sector 19 Chandigarh, travels daily from Ramgarh to his school. With no intimation about the strike, Vijit said had to travel by CTU bus “that was heavily crowded”. Then, he took an auto to reach school.
Around 11 Haryana Roadways buses were found parked at Sector 14 police station. Sources told Newsline that the bus staff had planned to run the buses post midnight along with police security. However, the drivers never turned up till morning. Police officials, however, claimed that the buses had been standing there as the drivers wanted to safeguard the buses from any possible violence during the strike.
Meanwhile, private buses took advantage of the situation to earn extra money and minimise the effects of strike by running their buses on long routes against their permitted short routes.
