Larger the banner, greater the hypocrisy- Part 2

As I promised you, I will continue my editorial for you people today from where I left. I was talking about media, their banners and hypocrisy. The Times of India consistently maintains its reputation as a balanced newspaper and does not run after exposures and scams/scandals. Very rarely it does operate as an exposing medium against corruption, but then also it has never hit below the belt. The RK’s cartoons have placed Times group in an exclusive place in the world of print media. The Times editorial are a stuff for aspirants of competitive examinations as also for administrators, political executives and corporate. Girilal Jain occupied the office of the Times Group as an Editor for a pretty long time and added academic depth to the editorial column. Kumar Ketkar, initially wrote for Economic Times before taking over the charge as an Editor of Maharashtra Times, the Marathi language edition of the Times group. Kumar happens to be the first journalist to have switched over from Economic newspaper to political news coverage.

Ritu Sarin of Indian Express earned a place in the category of celebrated journalists when she exposed the Tata tapes involving Field Marshal Sam Manickshaw with Mr. Ratan Tata, a business-tycoon. Ms. Sarin’s exposures have a class of her own and she too, like her counterparts in Times does not hit below the belt, nor does she profess scams-exposure as a career. Neither Mr. Girilal Jain nor Ms Sarin has won a Padma awards for their contribution to media.

Sucheta Dalal, a phenomenon that came to be from the Big Bull exposure of the Stock Market kite-flying scam, left the Times Group to join its arch-rival Indian Express. It was a very unprecedented move, and she continued there for long before launching her own publications. Ms. Dalal won Padma Shri quite late in life, almost a decade after the exposure. Friend or foe, it has to be a subject and not a person, is the way she professed journalism. Her article appealing mercy for Harshad Mehta, not from the criminal prosecution but from the hectic investigation and judicial journey was on humanitarian grounds. She had written that Harshad Mehta might die in prison if subjected to a suffocating system. And that is what happened years later as Mehta died of cardiac arrest in Thane jail.

A name that flew a lot like a stormy wave amidst the Bofors controversy was of Ms. Chitra Subramaniam of ‘The Hindu’ newspaper, a south-India based English daily. Ms. Subramaniam with her then editor Mr. N. Ram earned an international repute for cornering the then Congress government over the kick-back allegations in a purchase deal of Howitzer Long-range guns, known as Bofors.

The Swedish company had allegedly paid kick-backs to an official broker of Indian origin Mr. Win Chhada for executing the contract. Then Congress MP and matinee-idol Amitabh Bachchan made a history as he put his papers as an MP. It happened for the first time in the history of ‘Independent India’ that a Member of Parliament resigned over a controversy. The electronic media brought a type of journalism without much depth. The weight and depth of print-media journalism are totally absent in this form of news media.

In the times of “Sabse Tez” viewers are taken for granted. We see Arnab Goswami on TIMES NOW screaming “Enough is Enough”. Who are you trying to fool? Then we have a beard-sporting chap on a multi-national banner threatening us like a gangster. His tone, ups and downs in his voice have no consonance at all with the topic or the incident he is narrating. What we hear is “Better watch my programme or you had it”. The space titled Breaking News is compulsorily flashing round the clock.

Editorial Ownership and foreign ownership are two concepts in media that make a lot of difference for such banners that are under such management. As foreign ownership is concerned, there was a hue and cry from the locals some years ago and government was forced to slap some restrictions on it. I do not recollect the details or modalities of these norms, but then the class that foreign media possess and function with, we lack; especially in electronic media. There is no dearth of brave journalists, who if given an opportunity shall strive for excellence. Problem is with the managements. In the age of competition they cannot afford to concentrate on journalism as earlier. It is a harsh reality that journalism as a profession is a paid job. The introduction of electronic channels has faded off the charm of breaking-news and scam-exposures.

There is compulsorily the tag of Breaking News 24/7 on every channel. What is flashed under that tag is a scrap by compulsion. I’m recalling one of the leading news channel’s breaking news, when Amitabh Bachchan on his way from hospital to home; decided to take a left turn for his mother’s house. The news channel anchor was so excited that his belly fell off breaking the news.

Less written, less agony, so here I stop.

Despite pressure, Somnath Bharti not willing to quit as Delhi Law Minister

Somnath-Bharti-notDespite mounting pressure on him to quit as Delhi’s Law Minister, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Somnath Bharti on Monday said that his party leaders will continue to fight for the real causes of the common man and will even give up their lives for them.

Speaking to reporters outside the Rail Bhawan, Bharti said, “We will give up our lives but will fight for the people of Delhi. The people are unhappy because of absolute anarchy created by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress.”

“They are also unhappy because of the barbarous attitude of Delhi Police,” he said.

Endorsing Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s demand that Delhi Police should be brought under the direct control of the state government, the Law Minister said, “This situation has arisen due to indifferent attitude of the central government. We are not responsible for it now as our demands have not been met by the Centre. We will continue to hold protests if our demands are not met.”

Bharti, dismissing questions about his improper conduct and resignation, said, “How will the inquiry panel complete its probe against the guilty officers if they are not even suspended from office.”

“How can you guarantee that the probe will be fair with those who are guilty still continuing in their office?” he asked.

The reactions from Bharti came even as some members of Congress Women’s Wing protested in front of the Delhi Police headquarters demanding Bharti’s arrest for his midnight raid.

Somnath Bharti has been under fire for ordering a midnight raid at the house of a Ugandan woman on Wednesday last week in order to bust a prostitution and drug-peddling ring.

The AAP Minister again triggered a fresh controversy after he was seen attending the medical examination being conducted upon some Ugandan women, who the minister claimed were prostitutes and drug-peddlers.
The CCTV footage obtained from inside the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) showed that the Bharti was talking to doctors at 5 am when the medical tests were being carried out on Ugandan women.

According to reports, the Delhi Law Minister was seen at AIIMS very early and asked to ‘see’ for himself what was going on at the hospital.

Bharti reached AIIMS shortly after unidentified persons beat up and abused four Ugandan women in South Delhi’s Khirki Extension on January 15 night.

One of the victims have lodged a formal complaint with Delhi Police and it has now registered a First Information Report (FIR) against unknown people in this regard.

The woman, in her complaint filed in the Saket court on Saturday, has alleged that a group of people from a political party forcibly entered her house in South Delhi and molested her. She also claimed that she was threatened to leave the premises where she has been residing in.

Though she didn’t name any individual or a political party, she told the court that she could identify the men. The court then ordered the police to lodge an FIR and report back to it on the matter on February 14.

However, Bharti was not named in the FIR.

The matter came to fore after Bharti, accompanied by some residents and AAP supporters, accosted four women from Uganda during the raid on a building in Khirki Extension, which is in his constituency in South Delhi.

At least two were allegedly forced to go to hospital and undergo drug tests.

The Minister later justified raid saying drugs and sex were allegedly being trafficked there. The Law Minister has vehemently denied any wrongdoing on the part of workers of his Aam Aadmi Party who were present during that raid.

The National Human Rights Council (NHRC) has also taken cognizance of the matter and issued a notice to the Delhi Chief Secretary.

Since an FIR has been registered against Bharti and he was also seen at the AIIMS, there are chances that Delhi Police may serve notices on him to join the investigation.

Sunanda Pushkar’s death will haunt me for ages: Mehr Tarar

Mehr_TararPakistani journalist Mehr Tarar, who is in the eye of the storm after the mysterious death of Sunanda Pushkar, has expressed her anguish over the issue, saying that the incident has left her “shattered” and it will “haunt her for ages”, reports said.

Just a couple of days before her death, Sunanda had unleashed a flurry of bitter tweets directed against Mehr, accusing her of falling for Tharoor.

The love triangle war raging over the social media network Twitter took an ugly turn on Jan 17, when Sunanda Pushkar’s dead body was found from Hotel Leela Palace in New Delhi.

Sunanda was apparently disturbed over the alleged relationship between her husband and Pakistani journalist Meht Tarar, whom she accused of hitting on Shahsi Tharoor while she was away for medical check up.

However, speaking to an international newspaper, Mehr has denied any such relationship going on between her and Shashi Tharoor, saying that they were just “virtual” friends on Twitter and discussed life, politics and books in the mails exchanged between them.

Mehr said, “I would rather have her abuse me for the next ten years than to see her harm herself…”

Mehr said that what might have enraged Sunanda was a profile written by her for Shashi Tharoor, which heaped immense praises on him, including his mesmerising voice and handsome looks like Shah Rukh Khan.

“A woman I never met attacked me on Twitter, a fight began, and then she died. I’m shattered,” she told the newspaper.

She added that Tharoor had severed all communications with her after Sunanda warned him not to remain in contact with her.

Terrorists try to attack India’s secularism, democracy: Shinde

shindeTerrorists and extremists seek to attack the democratic and secular fabric of the country and they would continue to try to keep everyone on tenterhooks, Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said on Monday.

“Terrorism and extremism seek to attack our two most significant achievements- secularism and democracy. Our enemies who are at cross purposes with the ‘idea of India’, will continue to attempt to keep us on tenterhooks, and unsettle us, as we move forward in our endeavour of nation building,” he said.

Shinde was speaking on the occasion of foundation day of National Investigation Agency (NIA), and said these values lie at the very core of India’s existence, and bind its citizen as a ‘nation’.
The Minister said the threats to the country need not merely take on conventional forms and may emanate from hitherto unknown areas, methods, and motivations and security agencies need to keep themselves prepared in this fight.

“We need to undertake capacity enhancement and upgrade our skill sets, so as to confront the most virulent and most unusual of these threats.”

“Eternal vigilance is the price we have to pay in our quest for preserving and maintaining, our hard earned freedom, liberty, democracy, and secularism,” he said.

Examining issue of blacklisting AgustaWestland: Antony

After scrapping Agusta AntonyWestland’s Rs. 3,600 crore deal for supplying VVIP choppers, the Defence Ministry on Monday said it will take a decision on the issue of blacklisting the firm after consultations with the Law Ministry and CBI.

“We are examining the whole thing and we will take a decision after detailed examination and in consultation with the Law Ministry and CBI. I don’t want to take any hasty action that will cause problems to us….There is no understanding between the government and the company,” Defence Minister A K Antony said on the sidelines of an NCC function.

He was replying to a question on reports that the Anglo-Italian firm and the government have reached an understanding and the former would not be blacklisted.

The Defence Minister said the government is focusing on encashing its bank guarantees in Italy and India.

“In the Indian bank, we have encashed it. In the Italian bank, we are trying to get our money. There (in Italy) they have disputed but immediately we are trying to fight case and we are taking other actions to protect our interests,” he said.

The Defence Ministry cancelled its contract with AgustaWestland on January 1 after it found that there was alleged breach of the pre-contract integrity pact. AgustaWestland has denied any wrongdoing on its part in the case relating to alleged kickbacks in the deal.

After scrapping the deal, India encashed a guarantee of over Rs. 250 crore deposited by AgustaWestland in a bank in Delhi even as it is preparing to file an appeal against an Italian court’s stay on its move to encash another guarantee in an Italian bank.

Telangana Bill not comprehensive, needs amendments: BJP

Telangana-BillBJP on Monday said the Telangana Bill providing for bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh was not comprehensive and that amendments are needed in it so that concerns of Seemandhra region could be addressed.

The main opposition party, whose support will be crucial for passage of the Bill in Parliament, accused Congress of mishandling the issue and treating it as an “internal matter”.

BJP leader Venkaiah Naidu, while participation in a protest organised by the party’s Andhra Pradesh unit to demand amendments to the Telangana Bill, maintained his party’s commitment to division of the state but said concerns of Seemandhra region need to be addressed.

“BJP is committed for division of the State. We are in favour of creation of the new State of Telangana,” he said.

At the same time, he added, “The BJP will stand by the Seemandhra people as far as their genuine problems are concerned. We will do everything. The bill brought by the Congress government is not comprehensive and does not address the concerns of people of different regions.”

Asking the government to “seriously understand apprehensions and fears” of Seemandhra region, Naidu said, “It is the duty of the ruling party to understand the problems and then come with needed amendments and then take everybody into account and get the bill passed.”

He said the Centre should declare in the bill a new capital for Telangana, 10-year tax holiday to woo industrialists for establishing their units and upgradation of Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam and Tirupati airports into international airports.

His comments assume significance as the government is planning to introduce the Telangana bill in Parliament during the resumed Winter session beginning on February 5.

Sunanda Pushkar may have died of drug overdose, says doctors’ report: sources

Sunanda-PushkarSunanda Pushkar Tharoor, wife of union minister Shashi Tharoor, may have died of a drug overdose, a panel of doctors has reportedly concluded.

The autopsy report on the 52-year-old, who was found dead in a five-star hotel room on Friday, was handed over to a magistrate investigating the case.

Here are the latest updates on this story:

Sources say doctors found traces of Alprazolam, an anti-depressant, which indicates that Sunanda Pushkar Tharoor died of an overdose of some strong medicine or sedative. There was no trace of alcohol in her blood, say sources.

Sources say it will now be investigated whether the fatal overdose was accidental or not.

Doctors had said on Saturday that Ms. Tharoor died an “unnatural, sudden death”. Some physical injuries on her body are believed to be unrelated to her death, say sources.

Mr. Tharoor, the minister of state for Human Resource Development, recorded his statement on Sunday before the magistrate investigating his wife’s death. Today, he will go to Hardwar to immerse the ashes of his wife, who was cremated on Saturday.

Actor Salman Khan’s remark on Narendra Modi draws sharp response from Nitish Kumar

Nitish-KumarBihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar threw a sharp dart at Narendra Modi, the BJP’s choice for prime minister, declaring that the 2002 riots in Gujarat “can neither be forgiven nor forgotten.”

Mr. Kumar ended his 17-year alliance with the BJP last year over its decision to elevate Mr. Modi to its top campaigner. Like other detractors of Mr. Modi, the Bihar chief minister alleges that the BJP leader should be held accountable for the communal violence that lacerated Gujarat during his first term as its chief minister.

Last month, a court in Gujarat upheld a Supreme Court investigation that cleared Mr. Modi of allegations of complicity in the riots.

Mr. Kumar was asked to comment on Bollywood superstar Salman Khan who said in a recent interview that in his opinion, Mr. Modi need not apologize for the riots since he has been legally cleared of the charges against him.

“It cannot be forgotten or forgiven” Mr. Kumar professed.

The BJP has alleged repeatedly that Mr. Kumar’s stand on its leader is for public consumption only and is aimed at pleasing the 15 per cent Muslim population of Bihar, on whose support he is heavily dependent.
