Tamil Magan Hussain was elected as the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) Presidium Chairman at the party’s general council meeting on Thursday. He was the interim Presidium Chairman until now.

Meanwhile, all 23 resolutions were rejected at the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) general council meeting. AIADMK Presidium Chairman Tamil Magan Hussain announced that it has been decided to hold the next general council meeting of AIADMK on July 11, 2022, at 9.15 am.

After the resolutions were rejected supporters of O Panneerselvam, who wanted to have the dual leadership format in the party continue, staged a walkout from the meeting. “All members rejected all the 23 resolutions and the only demand of General committee members is on single leadership. When the next General Committee meeting is convened, all these along with resolutions for single leadership will be adopted,” said AIADMK Deputy Coordinator KP Munusamy.

He further said that when the next General Council Meeting happens, all the 23 resolutions and a single leadership resolution will be passed. AIADMK’s general council meeting is underway at Shrivaaru Venkatachalapathy Palace in Chennai’s Vanagaram.

Former Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, former Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam and other leaders of the party are present at the meeting. After the demise of Jayalalithaa in 2016, the party has been following a dual-leadership formula with EPS as co-coordinator and OPS as coordinator.

Palaniswami is all for single leadership in the party and his camp is keen on passing a resolution in this regard in June 23 meeting while Panneersevelam claims that the general body cannot pass the resolution without his signature as per party by-law. Voices grew louder for single leadership in the party since the district secretary meeting on June 14. Both camps have held several rounds of talks to resolve the issue but remained unsuccessful. OPS also wrote a letter to EPS demanding postponement of the general body meeting citing a “confused situation” in the party which the AIADMK co-coordinator rejected.

In comparison to OPS, EPS enjoys the support of a large number of party MLAs and district secretaries. Amid all this drama, OPS’ long-time loyalists have also joined the EPS camp. On Tuesday, Thiruvallur District Secretary Alexander and Puducherry State Secretary Anbalagan extended their support to EPS.

Last week, amid controversy over the issue of single leadership in AIADMK between OPS and EPS, the former held an “individual meeting” with his supporters and district secretaries at the party office.

Prominent Indian-American legal expert Anjali Chaturvedi has been nominated by US President Joe Biden as General Counsel in the veteran’s affairs department, the latest from the community to be named for a key position in the administration.

Chaturvedi is a Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the Criminal Division of the US Department of Justice, according to the White House website.

Chaturvedi has been nominated for General Counsel, US Department of Veterans Affairs.

The main vision of the department is to provide veterans with the world-class benefits and services they have earned — and to do so by adhering to the highest standards of compassion, commitment, excellence, professionalism, integrity, accountability, and stewardship.

During her career, Chaturvedi has worked in all three branches of the government and in private practice. Prior to returning to government service, Chaturvedi was the Assistant General Counsel and Director of Investigations for Northrop Grumman Corporation, leading the company’s global investigations team.

Chaturvedi earlier served as an Assistant General Counsel at British Petroleum and as a partner at the Washington, DC law firm of Nixon Peabody. Before entering private practice, she was a federal prosecutor.

During her time at the Justice Department, she served both in the District of Columbia and the Northern District of California US Attorneys’ Offices, including as Deputy Chief of the Felony Trial Section and Chief of the Organised Crime Strike Force, and detail as Counsel to Senator Dianne Feinstein on the Senate Judiciary Committee. She began her legal career clerking for the Honourable Gregory E. Mize of the District of Columbia Superior Court. Chaturvedi also taught trial advocacy and criminal procedure as an Adjunct Professor at Georgetown University and Hastings College of Law.

Born in Cortland, New York, Chaturvedi is a first-generation American.

She is a graduate of the Georgetown University Law School and Cornell University. She is also a certified yoga teacher and leadership coach. She lives in Chevy Chase, MD with her husband and son. On Tuesday, leading Indian-American scientist Dr. Arti Prabhakar was nominated by Biden as a top science advisor to the US President, a decision hailed by the White House and the Indian-American community as ”historic.” Last week, Biden nominated Indian-American security expert Radha Iyengar to the top Pentagon position.

US President Biden is set to nominate Indian-American career diplomat Gautam Rana as the new US Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Slovakia, the White House said in a statement last month.

Biden nominated Indian-American diplomat Rachna Sachdeva Korhonen as his envoy to Mali in April, the third such nomination of an Indian-American in over a month. In March, President Biden nominated two Indian-Americans as US envoys. He nominated diplomat Puneet Talwar as the country’s ambassador to Morocco and political activist Shefali Razdan Duggal as his envoy to the Netherlands.

Hollywood star Brad Pitt has dropped a major hint that he might soon be calling quits on his acting career after spending more than 30 years in the entertainment industry.

The Oscar-winning actor told GQ magazine in a profile interview that he is going through the ”last semester or trimester” of his career.

”I consider myself on my last leg… this last semester or trimester. What is this section gonna be? And how do I wanna design that?” Pitt said.

The 58-year-old actor started his journey in Hollywood in the late 1980s and found fame with 1991’s ”Thelma & Louise”.

Over the years, he delivered critical and commercial hits such as ”Fight Club”, ”Ocean’s” series, ”Troy”, ”Mr & Mrs. Smith”, ”The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”, ”Inglourious Basterds”, ”Moneyball”, and ”Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” (2019), for which he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Pitt most recently had a cameo appearance in Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum-starred ”The Lost City” and is now gearing up for Sony’s action movie ”Bullet Train”.

He will also feature in Damien Chazelle-directed epic ”Babylon”, co-starring Margot Robbie, and an Apple Original Films thriller opposite George Clooney for filmmaker Jon Watts.

Pitt is equally known for his work as a producer with his production company Plan B Entertainment, which has backed award-winning movies such as ”12 Years a Slave”, ”The Departed”, ”Moonlight”, and ”Minari”.

In 2021, Plan B will release ”Women Talking”, based on Miriam Toews’ novel of the same title. ”It’s as profound a film as anything made this decade,” Pitt said about the movie. The actor’s banner is also behind ”Blonde”, the Ana de Armas-starrer adaptation of Joyce Carol Oates’ fictional biography of Marilyn Monroe.

Pitt described producing as ”gratifying in new and different ways” but said he is open to appearing in front of the camera when the timing feels right.

His frequent collaborator Quentin Tarantino told the outlet that he considers Pitt as ”one of the last remaining big-screen movie stars” of Hollywood.

The director compared Pitt with iconic Hollywood stars like Paul Newman, Robert Redford, and Steve McQueen.

Shiv Sena MLA escapes from rebel camp with the horror of life

In this attempt of disassembling Maha Vikas Aghadi, Eknath Shinde the rebel goes to an extent of compromising the life of a fellow MLA. Nitin Deshmukh a Shiv Sena MLA was earlier assumed to have joined the rebel Sena gang. He reached Mumbai with great difficulties and fear of life. He told his chilling experiences to the media. Deshmukh has resurfaced voicing his support for Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. He claimed that he was “abducted” and taken to Gujarat’s Surat where he ran away.

When he managed to leave the premise where all these MLAs were kept, he reached the main road at around 3 am in the midnight trying to hitch a ride from passersby. While he was asking for help, many cops chased him and took him to a hospital. They pretended that the MLA had a heart attack and tried to conduct some medical procedure on his body. Deshmukh did not suffer any sudden health complications but was forcibly taken to the hospital. The doctors wanted to operate on him, and harm him under the pretext of some heart issue. Once again, he managed to escape from the hospital and with great difficulties reached Mumbai.

Pranjali, Deshmukh’s wife, had submitted a written complaint to the Akola police station saying she last spoke to her husband on a phone call at 7 pm on June 20 and hasn’t been able to communicate with him since as his phone has been switched off. She suspected a threat to Deshmukh’s life. Deshmukh was not only taken to the hospital and given the wrong medication to compromise his health but his phone was also confiscated by the rebel gang. Imagine if Deshmukh wouldn’t have returned back? We would have still assumed that he is with that rebel gang or if he would have lost his life, the same rebel group could have taken advantage of his death for various reasons. This is a really dangerous trend.

After hearing Deshmukh neither our Chief minister demanded action nor the home minister took any strong action against the people who forced him to flee. I don’t know how many such MLAs are captivated and forced to stay in those hotels in this number game. Is this the character of Balasaheb Thackeray’s Shiv Sainik? This is what Eknath Shinde boasts about being Balasaheb’s Sainik? Drug, dope and try to eliminate fellow MLA for a number game? True Shiv Sainik never hides and attacks. Balasaheb’s Shiv Sainik never indulges in cowardly acts. Shiv Sena is one large family than the political party, they have all other ways to protest or leave Shiv Sena.

Shinde used to work in Bar and later on became an auto-rickshaw driver in Thane city adjoining Mumbai. Like any other youth of Maharashtra from the 1970s and 80s, Eknath Shinde too had a major influence of Shiv Sena supremo Balasaheb Thackeray. Moreover, he was also impressed by the working style of Shiv Sena’s then Thane district president Anand Dighe, who later came to be known as Dharmaveer. He joined Shiv Sena in 1980s and was appointed Shakha Pramukh of Kisan Nagar. Since then, he had been at the forefront of many agitations, undertaken by his party on social and political issues, such as inflation, black marketing, hoarding of essential commodities such as palm oil by traders etc. He also took part in Maharashtra-Karnataka Border agitation in 1985, in which he was imprisoned in Bellary jail for over 40 days.

In 1997, he was given the opportunity to contest the election of Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) as a corporator which he won with a handsome majority. In 2001, he got elected as a Leader of the house in TMC. He continued to occupy the post till 2004. In 2004, Eknath Shinde was given an opportunity to contest the Assembly Elections from Thane Assembly Constituency by Balasaheb Thackeray and he won the same with a good majority. In the very next year, in 2005, he was appointed to the coveted post of Shiv Sena Thane District Head. He was the first MLA from Shiv Sena to have been appointed The District Head as well.

The purpose of writing all this is to tell that the auto puller can become such a nig political leader with all riches just because Bala Saheb Thackrey supported and encouraged him. He is indebted to Shiv Sena and its leaders who supported him. He emerged victorious in the subsequent assembly elections in 2009, 2014 and 2019. After the 2014 elections, he was elected as the leader of the legislative party of Shiv Sena and subsequently the Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly. Within a month, as Shiv Sena decided to join the state government, he took oath as the Minister for Public Works Department (Public Undertakings) and went on to take the additional responsibility of the Health and Family Welfare Ministry in January 2019. His son, Dr Shrikant Shinde, is an orthopaedic surgeon who got elected as a Member of Parliament to the Lok Sabha from the Kalyan constituency, defeating the NCP’s Anand Paranjape, who had defected from the Shiv Sena and Raju Patil of the MNS. For the past 40 years, Shiv Sena gave him positions, opportunities and support. Today whatever he is, all that is because of Shiv Sena. Whatever riches he earned are given by the status he possesses. His greed has taken him on new excursions, he rebelled against the party that gave him existence. He is falsely using Bala Saheb Thackrey’s name and political sentiments of Hindutva. I am sure money mesmerizes all of us, and power plays a vital factor in human brains. According to a source, the list of Shiv Sena leaders was on the radar of investigating agencies including Eknath Shinde and his close associates like Ajay Ashar, a real estate businessman. One needs to really understand what has forced Eknath against Shiv Sena that gave him presence and survival or did the ED push Eknath Shinde into BJP’s arms? Even if he joins BJP can he survive only on Hindutva agenda? Can he remain loyal to the new party when he easily gave up on his original loyalties?

Marathi Actor Ketaki Chitale get a bail on Wednesday after more than a month she was arrested for allegedly sharing  an objectionable post about NCP Sharad Pawar on social media. The bail was grant from Thane district of Maharashtra.

H M Patwardhan granted bail to her on surety of Rs 20,000

With this, Chitale will be able to walk out of the Thane central jail, where she is currently lodged, her advocate said.

On May 14, 2022, Thane police had arrested Chitale for sharing on Facebook a Marathi verse, which allegedly referred to NCP chief Sharad Pawar in a derogatory way.

Police at Kalwa in Thane had registered the offence against her under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for her post on Pawar.

The offence was registered under section 505 (2) (statements conducting to public mischief), 500 (defamation), 501 (printing or engraving matter known to be defamatory) and 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc). Complainant Swapnil Netke in his complaint had alleged that the post was likely to lead to a trouble between political parties.

Her counsel advocate Yogesh Deshpande, who appeared in the court on behalf of Chitale, said after being granted bail by the court, she will now be released from the jail.

The 29-year-old actor is currently facing over 20 FIRs regarding the Facebook post.

Last week, a court here had granted bail to Chitale in another case registered against her under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act in neighboring Navi Mumbai in 2020.

I am ready to keep my resignation letter ready: CM Uddhav Thackeray

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray began his live telecast on Facebook stating, “I am speaking to you after a long time. In this testing time of Covid, I did everything I could in my capacity. However, today I wanted to talk to you about something else.”

He prolonged his talk by saying, “I am hurt today; I am surprised and shocked. If Congress and NCP say they don’t want Uddhav as CM I can understand. But today morning, Kamal Nath called me, yesterday Sharad Pawar called me and said I am with you, I have faith in you. They want me but if my own people don’t want me then what can I say?”

He further said, “Instead of going to Surat or somewhere else, why can’t they just come and tell me to my face that we don’t want you as our CM. If they give a statement saying I want Uddhav Thackeray to resign, I will. I am ready to resign and also ready to go to Raj Bhavan if even one person told me on the face. I am ready to keep my resignation letter ready. Come before me and I will hand over my resignation. Take that resignation to Raj Bhavan and go. I can’t go because I have Covid.”

When we asked RTI activist Anil Galgali his opinion on today’s CM speech, he said, “change is an inevitable factor of every aspect of life including politics. Whatever happened today had to happen long ago.”

Visibly weak and fragile Uddhav Thackrey said, “Some people say this is not Bal Thackeray’s Shiv Sena. We fought alone in 2014 after Bal Thackeray passed away. I am a CM for the last 2.5 years and all those leaders elected come from the same Shiv Sena party of Bal Thackeray. It was not possible for me to meet anybody for the last three or four months and I have only recently started meeting people now.”

Sena and Hindutva are always intact. Shiv Sena can’t be separated from Hindutva and Hindutva can’t be separated from Shiv Sena. He also maintained that “Shiv Sena can’t be separated from Hindutva and Hindutva can’t be separated from Shiv Sena.”

He addressed people but did not say anything about pulling down the government or taking any drastic steps. He did not criticize anyone, but calmly answered all those allegations made against him.

Shinde and his followers have stepped up their rebellion with a letter to the Governor and Deputy Speaker in the state assembly. The letter by 34 rebel MLAs — four of them Independents — declares Shinde their leader.

Shinde — who has consistently evoked the legacy of Balasaheb Thackeray and his version of Hindutva since yesterday — can split the party in the assembly but needs the support of at least 37 MLAs to protect them from the anti-defection law.

In 56 years, Shiv Sena faces 4th rebellion, 1st under Uddhav’s watch

In 56 years, Shiv Sena faces 4th rebellion, 1st under Uddhav's watch 11

Despite being a party of committed cadres with unflinching loyalty to the leadership of the day, the Shiv Sena has been vulnerable to rebellions in its ranks and it has seen revolts by prominent figures on four occasions, three of them under the watch of its charismatic founder Bal Thackeray, with Eknath Shinde becoming the latest leader to join the list.

The rebellion by Shinde, a cabinet minister who has walked away with a bunch of Shiv Sena MLAs, is most significant in the outfit’s 56-year-old history as it threatens to bring down the party-led Maha Vikas Aghadi government in Maharashtra, while the other revolts took place when it was not in power in the state.

The present revolt, which started taking shape post-Monday midnight after Legislative Council poll results, throws a big challenge before Maharashtra Chief Minister and Sena president Uddhav Thackeray as the three previous revolts took place when his father Bal Thackeray was still around.

The Sena witnessed the first major jolt in 1991 when Chhagan Bhujbal, the OBC face of the party who was also credited with expanding the organization’s base in rural parts of Maharashtra, decided to leave the party.

Bhujbal had cited ”non-appreciation” from the party leadership as the reason for leaving the party.

Despite Bhujbal having helped the Sena to win a sizeable number of seats in parts of Maharashtra, Bal Thackeray had appointed Manohar Joshi as Leader of Opposition in the Assembly.

In the subsequent winter session in Nagpur, Bhujbal along with 18 Sena MLAs left the party and announced their support to the Congress which was then ruling the state. But, 12 rebel MLAs returned to the Sena fold the same day.

Bhujbal and other rebel MLAs were recognized by the then-Assembly speaker as a separate group and they did not face any action.

“It was an audacious move because Shiv Sena workers were well known for their aggressive approach (towards dissidence). They even attacked the official residence of Chhagan Bhujbal in Mumbai, which is generally guarded by the state police force,” a senior political journalist told PTI.

Bhujbal, however, lost the 1995 Assembly election from Mumbai to the then-Shiv Sena leader Bala Nandgaonkar, and later shifted base to Nashik district.

The veteran politician joined the NCP when Sharad Pawar formed the party after leaving the Congress in 1999. Bhujbal (74) is currently a minister and cabinet colleague of Shinde in the Shiv Sena-led MVA government.

In 2005, the Shiv Sena faced another challenge when former chief minister Narayan Rane left the party and joined the Congress.

Rane, who subsequently left the Congress, is currently a BJP Rajya Sabha member and also a union minister.

The next shock to the Sena came in 2006 when Uddhav Thackeray’s cousin Raj Thackeray decided to leave the party and form his own political outfit – the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS).

Raj Thackeray had then said his fight was not with the Sena leadership, but with others surrounding the party leadership and not letting others in. In the 2009 election to the 288-member Maharashtra Assembly, the MNS won 13 seats. Its tally in Mumbai was one more than the Shiv Sena.

The Shiv Sena is currently facing another rebellion by a section of its MLAs led by senior state minister Eknath Shinde, a four-time MLA from Thane district and a popular figure in the organization.

Political journalist Prakash Akolkar, who has written a book on the party, said, “The Sena leadership is taking some of its leaders for granted. Such an attitude has always backfired, but the party is not ready to change its stance.” ”Now, times have changed and most of the MLAs come to the party with a lot of expectations, he said. If those expectations are not addressed properly, such a revolt is bound to happen,” he said.

The Shiv Sena currently has 55 MLAs, the NCP 53 and the Congress 44 MLAs. All three constitute the MVA. The opposition BJP has 106 seats in the Assembly.

To escape a disqualification under the anti-defection law, Shinde needs the support of 37 MLAs. The rebel leader has claimed 46 Sena MLAs are with him.
