Two-time Indian Super League champions Chennaiyin FC have roped in young Manipuri midfielder Yumkhaibam Jiteshwor Singh on a multi-year deal ahead of the upcoming season.

Jiteshwor will be joining Marina Machans following an impressive outing for Neroca FC in the I-League last season in which he was adjudged the Best Emerging Player of the Season.

He had produced one assist and spent over 1500 minutes on the pitch, featuring in 12 league and five championship stage matches.

“We are excited to see Jiteshwor in Chennaiyin FC colours especially after being awarded the Best Emerging Player of the Season in I-League last year. This is a real positive signing for us and our vision this season,” Chennaiyin FC co-owner Vita Dani said.

The 20-year-old will look to add youthful energy to Chennaiyin FC’s midfield, consisting of last season’s skipper Anirudh Thapa, who was retained by the club earlier on a two-year deal.

Talking about his maiden ISL contract, an elated Jiteshwor said: “I am very excited to join Chennaiyin FC. I can’t wait for pre-season and to meet my new teammates. I will work hard to play in the starting eleven.”

A defensive midfielder, Jiteshwor has played in three I-League seasons in his career so far since making his professional debut with Orange Brigade in 2020. He also appeared for Kolkata-based Bhawanipore FC on three occasions in the I-League qualifiers during a short loan spell in 2020.

Jiteshwor has played 40 professional matches in his career which also includes two assists.

On Saturday, two-time champions Chennaiyin FC have signed West Bengal captain and defender Monotosh Chakladar ahead of the upcoming Indian Super League season 9.

Chakladar is the third fresh signing for Marina Machans this summer. It is also a maiden ISL contract for the 24-year-old footballer, who captained Bengal in the 75th Santosh Trophy last month and played a crucial role in the state team’s runners-up finish.

A well-known face in the Bengal football circuit, Chakladar will bring invaluable experience into the Chennaiyin side, having played in various domestic competitions in his five-year-long career so far.

“Deadpool won’t be Disney-fied,” says writer

Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are presently writing ‘Deadpool 3’ for director Shawn Levy and star Ryan Reynolds. Reese assured fans that the script will not be ‘Disney-fied’.

According to Variety, the upcoming third chapter of the ‘Deadpool’ franchise will be the first made under Disney, which acquired Fox in 2019 after two R-rated ‘Deadpool’ films grossed over USD780 million worldwide.

Fans have speculated about how a Disney-backed ‘Deadpool’ would look, as well as if the studio’s family-friendly image will sanitize the bawdy and rude tone of the character.

“It’s these [Disney] people and these people do things their way,” Reese recently told The Playlist. “And we were used to doing things our way, so there are differences, but I think the great part is that Marvel’s been incredibly supportive. They are gonna let Deadpool be Deadpool, you know? It’s not like any particular joke may be the one that they say, ‘You know, that’s too far,’ that could happen, but to this point, it’s been nothing but support.” Reese added Marvel’s views on the franchise’s future, “It’s been nothing but, ‘How can we help you?’ What from our universe would you like to use? How can we make your life easy? And we’re gonna let Deadpool be Deadpool.

We’re not… this is not going to be the Disney-fied Deadpool. So they’re awesome, and now it’s up to us to come through and justify that faith.” “Oh, sure,” Reese said when asked if the ‘Deadpool’ trilogy will be rated R with the upcoming third film.

“They’re not gonna mess with the tone. I mean, I’d never say never, I guess there’s an outside chance, but we’ve always been told it can be R-[rated] and we’re proceeding as if it’s R. We would like it to be R, we always have, so I don’t think that’ll change.” The ‘Deadpool’ films have earned over USD780 million worldwide, making them the highest-grossing ‘X-Men’ films of all time. The first two films, which were released in 2016 and 2018, were produced by 20th Century Fox prior to Disney’s acquisition of the studio. The release date for ‘Deadpool 3’ is presently unknown.

Delhi Police on Tuesday said that it has provided security to suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma after an FIR was registered on a complaint that she was getting death threats following her controversial religious remarks.

“Sharma and her family have been provided police security after she alleged that she has been receiving threats and was being harassed over her remarks,” an official said.

The Bharatiya Janata Party on Sunday suspended its spokesperson Nupur Sharma from the party’s primary membership after her alleged inflammatory remarks against minorities.

” CPDelhi I’m being bombarded with rape, death and beheading threats against my sister, mother, father & myself. I’ve communicated same to Delhi Police. If anything untoward happens to me or any of my family members…,” tweeted Nupur Sharma on May 27.

While suspending Sharma, the BJP said that it “respects all religions” and is “strongly against any ideology which insults or demeans any sect or religion”.

The BJP leader’s remark drew sharp reactions from Gulf countries. India has said that it had taken strong action against those who made controversial remarks against minorities.

ED seizes Rs 2.8 cr cash, and 133 gold coins after raids against Satyendar Jain

“Unexplained” cash of Rs 2.85 crore and 133 gold coins were seized after raids were conducted at the premises of Delhi minister Satyendar Jain and his alleged associates as part of a money-laundering probe against them, the ED said Tuesday.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) said those raided on Monday “either directly or indirectly assisted (the minister) or participated in the process of money laundering”.

The cash and coins were “unexplained” and were kept in a “secret” place, it said in a statement.

Jain, 57, was arrested on May 30 under the criminal sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and is in ED custody till June 9.

The ED had conducted searches at about 7 premises, including that of a jeweller, in Delhi and some neighbouring locations on Monday.

Jain, a minister without portfolio in the Arvind Kejriwal government, is being probed by the federal agency under the PMLA on charges of alleged hawala dealings.

Kejriwal recently had defended Jain as a “hardcore honest and patriot” person who was being framed in a “false case” and hoped the minister will come out clean after the ED probe.

The agency said those raided include Jain’s wife Poonam Jain, his business associates Ankush Jain and Vaibhav Jain, Naveen Jain and Siddharth Jain (directors of Ram Prakash Jewellers Pvt Ltd), G S Matharoo (chairman of Lala Sher Singh Jivan Vigyan Trust which runs Prudence group of schools), Yogesh Kumar Jain (director in Ram Prakash Jewellers Pvt Ltd.), father-in-law of Ankush Jain and Lala Sher Singh Jivan Vigyan Trust.

“Lala Sher Singh Jivan Vigyan Trust had provided accommodation entries for transfer of land from company beneficially owned by Satyendar Kumar Jain to family members of accomplices in order to alienate the property and to frustrate the process of confiscation,” the ED said.

It said “incriminating documents and digital records” were seized during the raids.

“Cash amounting to Rs 2.85 crore and 133 gold coins weighing 1.80 kg in total from unexplained source were found to be secreted in the said premises and were seized under PMLA,” it said.

In April, the ED had attached assets worth Rs 4.81 crore of Jain’s family and companies “beneficially owned and controlled” by him as part of the probe.

In a statement issued then, the ED had said a provisional order was brought out under the PMLA to “attach immovable properties worth Rs 4.81 crore belonging to Akinchan Developers Pvt. Ltd., Indo Metal Impex Pvt Ltd, Paryas Infosolutions Pvt. Ltd., Manglayatan Projects Pvt. Ltd., J.J. Ideal Estate Pvt. Ltd., Swati Jain, wife of Vaibhav Jain, Sushila Jain, wife of Ajit Prasad Jain, and Indu Jain, wife of Sunil Jain.”

The probe found that “during the period 2015-16, when Satyendar Kumar Jain was a public servant, the companies beneficially owned and controlled by him received accommodation entries to the tune of Rs 4.81 crore from shell (paper) companies against cash transferred to Kolkata-based entry operators through the hawala route”.

“These amounts were utilised for direct purchase of land or for repayment of loan taken for the purchase of agricultural land in and around Delhi,” the ED said.

The named persons in the attachment order are associates and family members of Jain, officials had said.

The money laundering case against the AAP minister stems from an August 2017 FIR filed by the CBI against him and others on charges of alleged possession of disproportionate assets (DA).

A charge sheet was filed by the CBI in December, 2018 stating that the alleged DA was to the tune of Rs 1.47 crore, about 217 per cent more than his known sources of income, during 2015-17.

The Income Tax Department too had probed these transactions and had issued an order attaching “benami assets” allegedly linked to Jain.

BJP has set new restrictions for its spokespersons

BJP has set new restrictions for its spokespersons 7

A recent episode of Nupur Sharma has globally embarrassed the Modi government, due to her dreadful statements about the prophet Muhammad. The ruling BJP has set new limitations for its spokespersons and leaders joining TV debates as its government faces a huge international backlash.

BJP leader said “Only authorized spokespersons and panellists are allowed to participate in TV debates, and they will be assigned by the media cell. The spokespersons have been warned against criticising any religion, its symbols or religious figures.

BJP panellists have been prohibited from crossing the line during heated discussions. They have been urged to keep their language restrained and not get agitated or excited, sources say. For no provocation can they violate the party’s ideology or ideals, they add. The BJP has ordered its spokespersons to first check for the topic of the TV discussion, prepare for it and find out the party’s line on it before appearing on any channel. BJP instructed the Spokespersons and panellists of the party to stay on the agenda. They should not fall into any trap.

The BJP also wants its spokespersons to focus on the government’s social welfare work. The government continues to fight after the comments of two leaders provoked condemnation from at least 15 countries.

Nupur Sharma, who has since been suspended, made the comments during a TV debate around 10 days ago. She said on Twitter that her comments had been in response to “insults” made against Lord Shiva. Another party leader, Naveen Jindal, was expelled for posting a tweet about the Prophet that he later deleted. The government sought to distance itself from the comments by describing them as “views of fringe elements”.

The BJP on Sunday said it is “strongly against any ideology which insults or demeans any sect or religion” and “does not promote such people or philosophy”. Despite the attempts at damage control, several Muslim nations have summoned India’s envoys and demanded apologies for the comments.

Ahead of RS polls, Shiv Sena corrals MLAs in Mumbai hotel to avoid poaching

Ahead of RS polls, Shiv Sena corrals MLAs in Mumbai hotel to avoid poaching 9

Ahead of the June 10 Rajya Sabha polls, the ruling Shiv Sena in Maharashtra has decided to shift its MLAs from a resort in suburban Malad to a five-star hotel in south Mumbai as part of a strategy to ward off poaching, a senior party leader said on Tuesday.

All legislators of the Sena have been summoned to Mumbai and they will stay together till the polls on June 10, he said.

“We were in ‘The Retreat’ (at Madh island in northwest Mumbai) and all our ministers too were present there. That was part of our strategy. We will be moving to hotel ‘The Trident’ (in south Mumbai) today,” Sena MLA and party spokesperson Sunil Prabhu said.

The Trident is at a stone’s throw from the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly where voting will take place for the six Rajya Sabha seats.

The Sena has 55 MLAs (one MLA had died due to a heart attack last month) in the 288-member House.

Chief Minister and Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray on Monday met the MLAs of his party as well as others supporting it.

After more than two decades, the state will witness a contest in the Rajya Sabha polls as there are seven candidates in the fray for six seats.

The Sena has fielded two candidates — Sanjay Raut and Sanjay Pawar — while the BJP has nominated Union minister Piyush Goyal, Anil Bonde and Dhananjay Mahadik. The NCP (Praful Patel) and Congress (Imran Pratapgarhi) have fielded one candidate each.

The contest lies for the sixth seat between Pawar and Mahadik.

Given its strength in the Assembly, the BJP has enough votes to win two seats, while the Sena, NCP and Congress can win one seat each.

The Sena (55), NCP (52) and Congress (44) — all constituents of the Maha Vikas Aghadi– have enough votes together to ensure the victory for the second candidate of the Sena.

While two NCP MLAs- Anil Deshmukh and minister Nawab Malik- are currently in jail, one seat is lying vacant in the 288-member House.

Apart from the four main parties, the Assembly has 25 MLAs from smaller parties and Independents.

The Sena decided to corral its MLAs after accusing the opposition BJP of “horse-trading” and using Central agencies to pressure independent MLAs.

COVID-19 Impact on Babies Risk of neurodevelopmental changes

Babies born to mothers who suffered COVID-19 disease during pregnancy seem to exhibit differences in neurodevelopmental outcomes in 6 weeks, according to a preliminary analysis.

The analysis was presented at the 30th European Congress of Psychiatry.

Project Leader Dr Rosa Ayesa Arriola said: “Not all babies born to mothers infected with COVID show neurodevelopmental differences, but our data shows that their risk is increased in comparison to those not exposed to COVID in the womb. We need a bigger study to confirm the exact extent of the difference”.

Researchers found that babies born to mothers who had been infected show greater difficulties in relaxing and adapting their bodies when they are being held when compared to infants from non-infected mothers, especially when the infection took place in late pregnancy. Moreover, infants born from infected mothers tend to show greater difficulty in controlling head and shoulder movement. These alterations suggest a possible COVID-19 effect on motor function (movement control). The results come from an initial evaluation of the Spanish COGESTCOV-19 project, which followed the course of pregnancy and baby development in mothers infected with COVID-19. The researchers are presenting the data on pregnancy and post-natal assessment at 6 weeks after birth, but the project will continue to see if there are longer-term effects. The group will monitor infant language and motor development between 18 and 42 months old.

The initial evaluation compared babies born to 21 COVID-positive pregnant women and their babies, with 21 healthy controls attending the Marques de Valdecilla University Hospital in Santander, Spain. The mothers underwent a series of tests during and after pregnancy. These included hormonal and other biochemical tests (measuring such things as cortisol levels, immunological response, etc.) salivary tests, movement responses, and psychological questionnaires. All analyses were adjusted for infant age, sex, and other factors.

The post-natal tests included the Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale (NBAS), which measures the baby’s movement and behaviour.

Researcher Ms Agueda Castro Quintas (University of Barcelona, Network Centre for Biomedical Research in Mental Health), said: “We found that certain elements of the NBAS measurement were changed in 6-week-old infants who had been exposed to the SARS-COV-2 virus. Effectively they react slightly differently to being held, or cuddled”.

He added, “We have been especially sensitive in how we have conducted these tests. Each mother and baby were closely examined by clinicians with expert training in the field and in the tests. We need to note that these are the preliminary results, but this is part of a project following a larger sample of 100 mothers and their babies. They have also been monitored during pregnancy and after birth. We also plan to compare these mothers and babies with data from another similar project (the epi-project) which looks at the effect of stress and genetics on a child’s neurodevelopment”.

Agueda Castro Quintas continued: “This is an ongoing project, and we are at an early stage. We found that babies whose mothers had been exposed to COVID did show neurological effects at 6 weeks, but we don’t know if these effects will result in any longer-term issues, longer-term observation may help us understand this.

Co-researcher Nerea San Martin Gonzalez, added: “Of course, in babies who are so young there are several things we just can’t measure, such as language skills or cognition. We also need to be aware that this is a comparatively small sample, so we are repeating the work, and we will follow this up over a longer period. We need a bigger sample to determine the role of infection on offspring’s neurodevelopmental alterations and the contribution of other environmental factors In the meantime, we need to stress the importance of medical monitoring to facilitate a healthy pregnancy, discuss any concerns with your doctor wherever necessary”.

Commenting, Project Leader Dr Rosa Ayesa Arriola said: “This is the right moment to establish international collaborations that would permit us to assess long-term neurodevelopment in children born during the COVID-19 pandemic. Research in this field is vital in understanding and preventing possible neurological problems and mental health vulnerabilities in those children in the coming years”.

In an independent comment, Dr Livio Provenzi (University of Pavia, Italy) said: “There is a great need to study both direct and indirect effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the health and well-being of parents and infants. Pregnancy is a period of life which shapes much of our subsequent development, and exposure to adversity during pregnancy can leave long-lasting biological footprints. These findings from Dr Rosa Ayesa Arriola’s group reinforce evidence of epigenetic alterations in infants born from mothers exposed to pandemic-related stress during pregnancy. It shows we need more large scale, international research to allow us to understand the developmental effects of this health emergency and to deliver better quality of care to parents and infants”. Mumbai civic body gets over 200 suggestions, and objections after lottery draw for reservation of wards in polls 13

The Mumbai civic body has received 232 suggestions and objections after it drew a lottery for reservation of wards for the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and general category seats for women for the forthcoming city municipal elections, officials said on Tuesday.

Monday was the last day for citizens to submit their suggestions and objections on the matter.

According to the officials, many people in their suggestions/objections expressed the view that reservation of some civic wards for women was ”injustice” to male candidates. There were also demands for changing the reservation of some wards that are reserved for the general category of women in the lottery draw.

As per the lottery drawn last week without the Other Backward Class (OBC) quota on the directions of the State Election Commission (SEC), 118 of the total 236 seats in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will be reserved for women. Eight of these seats are reserved for Scheduled Caste candidates, one seat for Scheduled Tribes candidates, and 109 for the general category.

Citizens were given time from June 1 and 6 for submitting suggestions and objections about the ward reservation. After compilation of all the suggestions and objections, the final ward reservations list will be published in the gazette on June 13, as per the lottery schedule earlier released by the SEC.

The schedule for elections to the BMC and other municipal corporations is yet to be announced.

According to civic officials, there is also a demand for reserving a civic ward for the general category (instead of the Scheduled Castes), where there are around 5,000 SC community members out of the population of 54,000. There is also a demand for changing the reservation of a ward, has over 7,000 SC community members and has been reserved for the general category in the lottery draw, to Scheduled Castes.

The officials also said that 94 of the 232 suggestions and objections about changing the reservation of wards are similar in nature and only the names and addresses of the senders are different.
