Kyiv needs 1 per cent of NATO planes, tanks: Prez Zelenskyy 2
Ukraine needs just one per cent of aircraft and tanks that are stationed in NATO countries, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said, accusing Kyiv’s Western allies of being indecisive in terms of military assistance to Ukraine.
“Only 1 per cent of all NATO aircraft and 1 per cent of all NATO tanks, 1 per cent – we are not asking for more,” Zelenskyy said in a video address posted on his Telegram channel.
In his speech to 27 European leaders released on Friday, Zelenskyy criticized Hungary for refusing to supply Kyiv with weapons and not allowing the transfer of arms through Hungarian territory. Zelenskyy’s Chief of Staff Andriy Yermak said on Friday that Kyiv was “very disappointed” with the NATO summit held earlier this week because it expected the alliance would show more courage and exert additional measures to counter Russia.
In the early hours of February 24, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine after recognizing the Ukrainian breakaway regions of Donetsk and Luhansk as “independent Republics”. Russia maintains that the aim of its special operation is to “demilitarize and “denazify” Ukraine and that only military infrastructure is being targeted and the civilian population is not in danger.
Moscow has stressed that it has no plans to occupy Ukraine. According to Russian President Vladimir Putin, the goal is to protect the people of Donbas, “who have been subjected to abuse, genocide by the Kyiv regime for eight years.”
I am staying in Mumbai for over three decades; the first time witnessing the silent roads during COVID lockdown. I used to reach Churchgate for Borivali in less than 40 minutes in peak hours. Peaceful roads, clean roads, no honking, no jams, all was calm. As soon as the government relaxed COVID rules, the road became jammed with traffic jams.
Now travelling from Borivali to Churchgate in peak hours takes almost three to four hours. Mumbai Police’s initiative to keep cars and two-wheelers off-road was music to the ears. Here people age in traffic, most of the youngsters have back pain problems. Family members hardly get time to be with each other. The entire city is running in the rat race.
Mumbai is a Metro-city and its lifestyle is very much different from other cities… urbanisation has positive and negative effects. Mumbai is the largest city by population having an estimated population of 23 million during the current year. It is one of the most densely populated cities in the world and one of the largest cities of India in terms of population, business activities. Mumbai is called the financial capital of India.
A large population in Mumbai comprises migrants from other states in India. This migrant population who comes and stays here in search of better employment opportunities is one of the significant factors in the rising population of Mumbai. So, the Population of Mumbai has been rising at an alarming rate in the last 20 years. The habitats and vertical, huge and long structures make Mumbai a concerted city. Mumbaikar are called reserved people and the animal of concrete jungles.
Large Populations of Mumbai live in Slums and other residential areas. Mumbai has a population density of 20,482 persons per square kilometre, which is relatively very high. This large population of Mumbai includes dabbawala, stockbrokers, diamond merchants, Bollywood producers or even the local paan walla and corporate sectors. Strong public transport will be a brilliant solution. With support from the World Bank, the city recently invested in a new traffic management system.
Overseen by a control centre in police headquarters, it allows officers to monitor traffic flows at key junctions via a network of cameras and sensors and adjust signals when necessary to help prevent snarl-ups. Pushing a button in the control centre can make a traffic light at a distant junction turn from red to green, or vice versa. It is a relatively simple system and has proved quite effective in easing the pain of Mumbai’s traffic jams, but it certainly hasn’t eradicated them.
Govt. reduces the fares of BEST buses to encourage public transport. One of the biggest metro works is being carried out in Mumbai to reduce traffic on the road. However, while the construction is still in progress, Mumbai is witnessing the worst traffic and congestion of the decade. They widen roads in Mumbai by removing unauthorised encroachments from the streets. However, looking at the megacity, this has not worked as well. The number of vehicles owned and run on the road has also increased. In this scenario, the use of public transport is a better solution than booking cabs to reach from one place to another instead of using a vehicle. This will reduce parking issues as well.
The biggest challenge to Mumbai traffic is auto-rickshaws. On one permit, several autos are running on the road. Auto drivers take shortcuts; overtake other vehicles from the wrong side. Most of the time, auto drivers and bikers create miserable traffic jams. Similarly, there are bottlenecks on the eastern freeway. When you get down from the freeway and go towards the south side you can see how poorly the exit has developed. Though the bottleneck hasn’t revealed itself at the eastern freeway, it would show itself as the no. The number of vehicles using freeways increases. Major roads have bottlenecks and by solving this issue, controlling traffic becomes easy. Containers’ movement from the port area (Navi Mumbai) to Mumbai is another maniac.
Mumbai is called the “city of dreams”, people from all over the country, or these days even from all around the world, come here to not just live their dreams but to make more of what the city can offer to them. It is a land of opportunities. But Mumbai can be extremely expensive to rent/ own or have any living there. Navi Mumbai is a suburb of Mumbai and the standard of living varies per town. Depending on the location and structure of the housing – cost of living can vary. Certain places can be equally expensive as Mumbai and some places can be very nominal. A rich business executive or technological leader can have a luxurious life with all the renovated bathrooms and tile work in their kitchen, at the same time a hardworking cab driver can find a decent space to live in Navi Mumbai. And hence with the influx of population, more people with more cars or taking public transport to work in Mumbai/ Navi Mumbai. More and more people are on roads to get to work, to get home, to get to a salon, to get to a mall or just running to get a coffee. More stores, more housing, more restaurants, and more cars – yes… just more people have culminated into bringing about more traffic. And the infrastructure developed does not support this population – it just isn’t enough to accommodate all the people, their cars and their busy, on-the-go schedules.
Mumbai to have silent Sundays; Police to launch an initiative to keep cars, two-wheelers off-road 5
Commissioner of Police Sanjay Pandey came up with an initiative to keep Mumbai city pollution-free. This Sunday, only cycling is allowed on the streets. Four-wheelers or two, three-wheelers to go off-road, walks and skating activities in select parts of the city promote pollution-free commute. For about four hours on Sunday, traffic will impact 13 places in the city.
These places include Dorabhai Tata Road in Nariman Point, Carter Road in Bandra, Mind Space Road in Goregaon, Lokhandwala Road in D N Nagar (Andheri), Tansa Pipe Line at Mulund and Eastern Expressway in Vikhroli. These roads will remain closed for vehicular movement between 6 am and 10 am and are dedicated to local residents.
It’s final. #SundayStreets from this Sunday 6am to 10 am. 6 locations -marine drive, Linking Road, mindspace, Carter Road, Mulund and bkc. Look forward to #mumbaikars joining in large numbers Details will follow. Enjoy ? pic.twitter.com/gAtiPPpyRi
Joint Commissioner, Mumbai Traffic Police Rajvardhan Sinha said, “This is our first experiment, we have identified 13 patches, including ones at Marine Drive, Bandra Bandstand, Oshiwara, Borivali and Mulund, among others, which will shut for traffic from 8 am to 11 am on Sunday and dedicated to citizens. They will provide diversions to motorists during this period.”
Mumbai traffic police have recently conducted special drives to penalise traffic violators and registered FIRs against wrong-side drivers. Sanjay Pandey, who took charge earlier this month, had announced on Facebook live that wrong side driving will not attract fines, but violators will be directly booked for rash driving. At least 125 violators are booked so far.

Enforcement Directorate is on the lookout for Nandkishor Chaturvedi 9
The Enforcement Directorate is on the lookout for a man who could play a key role in the probe against the company owned by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s brother-in-law in a money laundering case. The alleged operator of shell companies, Nandkishor Chaturvedi, has been off the agency’s radar for the last many months. The ED had also earlier communicated to Chaturvedi to get his statement recorded.
Maharashtra state spokesperson of BJP Madhav Bhandari said, “ED started the investigation in the year 2017. Shiv Sena was sharing power with BJP during that period. They were silent on this topic. Now suddenly they are trying to make this thing political for their own benefits. They should separate every criminal investigation from a political point of view.”
In September 2017, the ED had arrested Chandrakant Patel of Pushpak Bullion, Mumbai, for allegedly purchasing 285 kilograms of gold post-demonetisation, with laundered money. In November 2017, the ED had provisionally attached the immovable and movable properties of Pushpak Bullion to the tune of Rs 21.46 crore belonging to Mahesh Patel, Chandrakant Patel, their family members and companies controlled by them.
On March 6, 2017, the agency had recorded a money-laundering case against Pushpak Bullion and other companies of the Pushpak Group, under the PMLA, for allegedly laundering money in the post-demonetisation period.
The ED investigation has revealed that Mahesh Patel had siphoned off and layered funds of a Pushpak group concern, M/s Pushpak Realty, in connivance with Nandkishore Chaturvedi (accommodation entry provider).
Union MSME Minister Narayan Rane said to wait and watch what unfolds ahead, while his MLA son Nitesh Rane dropped hints seeking the CM’s resignation after the ED attached properties of a company allegedly owned by Shridhar Madhav Patankar, Thackeray’s brother-in-law.
Rejecting outright the MVA’s charges, Leader of Opposition Devendra Fadnavis reiterated that the probe agencies are merely doing their job with no interference or influence to expose corruption at all levels.
BJP activist and ex-MP Kirit Somaiya warned to expose at least half-a-dozen more ‘corrupt ministers’ of what he alleged were the ‘Maha Vasooli (extortionist) Aghadi’ 3-party alliance and other scams involving important leaders.
Mohit (Kamboj) Bharatiya vowed more fireworks to expose more misdeeds of the MVA bigwigs and certain bureaucrats of their purported financial misdoings and investments in properties in the US.
The ED said it has attached immovable properties worth around Rs 6.45 core belonging to Pushpak Group’s entity, Pushpak Bullion, in Thane. These included 11 flats in the Neelambari realty project of Thane, which the ED said, belongs to Shree Saibaba Grihanirmiti Pvt Ltd owned and controlled by Patankar – the brother-in-law of CM Thackeray and brother of his wife Rashmi Thackeray.
According to ED officers, shell companies who channel the unaccounted income back into the books of accounts of business establishments by disguising it as loan or share capital provide accommodation entries. This is a widely used method by tax evaders.
NCP spokesperson Clyde Crasto told Afternoon Voice, “We cannot comment much on this issue as the investigations are still going on but every individual having a little knowledge about politics, they know how the Central government is misusing the power of investigative agencies where they are not in power.”
Keshav Upadhyay of the BJP said, “Indulging in corruption misusing the political influence is not new for Shiv Sena. The investigation is going on in 2017. Questioning the work of investigation agencies is a trend now. They cannot blame BJP or central government for their wrongdoing.”
Sachin Sawant, General secretary of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress said, “ED investigation on chief minister’s brother-in-law BJP has to behave like underworld do we can see that. In Ed’s 2005 Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) data Sachin Sawant Tweeted, “This data of ED raids will be more interesting if we winnow it down to how many of them are from the opposition during 2014 and 2022. Sure, not a single one would be from BJP.”
SC orders to transfer cases filled against ex-Mumbai top cop Param Bir Singh to CBI 11
The Supreme Court Thursday transferred to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) the investigation against former police commissioner Param Bir Singh over the allegations of misconduct and corruption.
A very murky affair is going on amid echelons of power on who should investigate the matter, a bench of Justices S K Kaul and M M Sundresh said.
The apex court said a thorough investigation is required to regain the faith of people in the state police.
The bench said: ”We are unable to accept the contention that an FIR is registered by those who had complaints against the petitioner. We are of the view that the state itself should have allowed CBI to carry out the investigation.
”We are of the prima facie view that there is some concerted effort which needs the investigation by CBI. What is the truth, who is at fault how does such a scenario come to prevail is something which investigation must get into. CBI must hold an impartial inquiry into all these aspects”.
The top court said it was not commenting on the merits of the allegations as it does not want the investigation to be influenced in any manner.
”We do not want the investigation to be influenced by the observation of this court. The High Court has treated this as a service dispute which it is not and thus, we set aside the HC verdict. We allow the appeal and direct the probe into 5 FIRs to be transferred to CBI with all records.
”Such transfer to be completed within one week and all officials to extend full cooperation to CBI to try to arrive at the truth,” the bench said.
Phone tap case: Congress' Patole sues IPS officer Rashmi Sukhla, others for 500 crores 13
Maharashtra Congress president Nana Patole has filed a Rs 500 crore defamation suit in a civil court here against IPS officer and former state intelligence chief Rashmi Shukla and others for alleged illegal tapping of his phone.
In the suit filed recently, Patole also sought a permanent injunction to stop the misuse of information collected through alleged illegal phone tapping.
On Wednesday, civil judge V B Gore issued notices to Shukla and others, and asked them to file a reply before April 12.
Shukla is presently on central deputation and posted as additional director general of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in Hyderabad Apart from Shukla, notices have been served to police inspector (technical analysis department) at Pune crime branch Vaishali Chandgude, state home department’s additional chief secretary, and police commissioners of Pune and Nagpur.
Patole, who is an MLA from Bhandara district, has alleged that the previous Maharashtra government (headed by BJP) conspired against him for political motives.
He filed the case through the state Congress’s legal cell chairman Ravi Jadhav and secretary Vaibhav Jagtap. They were represented in the court by counsel Satish Uke.
Notably, the Mumbai police had recorded Shukla’s statement in connection with the case of alleged illegal tapping of phones.
An FIR was registered against Shukla by the Colaba police in Mumbai earlier this month under the Indian Telegraph Act and relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, following a complaint by senior police officer Rajiv Jain, who accused her of having put the phone numbers of Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut and NCP leader Eknath Khadse under surveillance.
Earlier, the Pune police had also registered an FIR against Shukla in connection with alleged illegal tapping of the phones of Patole when a BJP-led government was in power in the state.
The cyber wing of the Mumbai crime branch had also registered an FIR last year against unidentified persons over alleged phone tapping and leak of confidential documents about police transfers during Shukla’s tenure as state intelligence department chief.
#NoParkingNoCar: Mumbai has witnessed a 107% jump in vehicular population 15
According to the latest transport statistics, Mumbai has witnessed a 107% jump in vehicular population in the past decade. “Kuch to karna hoga (something has to be done)… I am not a final authority and I am a Mumbaikar like you. Love the city and wish it was more motorable,” Police commissioner Sanjay Pandey tweeted.
Police commissioner Sanjay Pandey came up with a hashtag campaign #NoParkingNoCar and said he will take it up with car companies. The idea is shorthand for not registering new cars till they have proper parking slots.
Imagine autos/taxi require to show a parking place before they buy. Private cars nothing asked. Loading Mumbai roads with 600 plus daily new cars. Think about it. #NoParkingNoCar let us know will take up with car companies
Pandey pointed out that 600 new cars are added to the city roads daily and combined with the many app cabs, results in limited road space. A section of netizens welcomed Pandey’s decision to make the city roads more drivable while others hit out.
Former transport commissioner V N More had suggested NoParkingNoCar, but the proposal has been gathering dust in government files (see box for other proposals).
Ashok Datar from Mumbai Mobility Forum said, “‘No Parking No Car’ was the only solution, but this was unpopular among lakhs of car owners and politicians who owned over one vehicle. Datar said there were roads with vehicles parked on both sides impeding public transport and walkers.
“Since ‘No Parking No Car’ seems a difficult proposition, we need to look at alternatives like improving the parking system, introducing more pay and parking lots,” he suggested. Nearly 40% of cars in the city are parked on roads due to lack of proper parking facilities. There are many families in Mumbai with 2-3 cars.
Bombay HC upholds conviction, a life sentence of the auto-rickshaw driver for killing traffic cop 17
The Bombay High Court has upheld the conviction and life sentence imposed on an auto-rickshaw driver for murdering a traffic police constable in November 2010 after the latter issued him a ‘challan’ for a road rules violation.
A division bench of Justices S S Shinde and S V Kotwal in its judgement on Tuesday said it was satisfied that there was strong evidence against the accused and statements of the eye-witnesses were consistent with the victim’s dying declaration.
The bench dismissed the appeal filed by the convict – Mahendra Kumar Kewat – challenging the trial court’s order of October 2012, convicting him on murder charges and sentencing him to life imprisonment.
Kewat was found guilty of killing traffic police constable Anil Aitewadekar, who had issued him a challan for a traffic rules violation and for not having the requisite vehicle documents.
The high court in its judgement relied on the victim’s dying declaration, wherein he said that on the day of the incident, he had asked the accused of his license and other documents. When the accused revealed that he did not have the relevant documents, the deceased seized his license and gave him a ‘challan’.
The accused then left, but returned after some time. He poured petrol on the victim, threw a shirt doused in petrol on him and then set him on fire.
The victim was rushed to a hospital, but he died after three days.
“The dying declaration is consistent with the version of the eye-witnesses and it is sufficiently proved. There is hardly any infirmity in this dying declaration,” the court said.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday asserted that proper action would be taken against the perpetrators of violence in Birbhum district, where eight people were charred to death in a village the day before.
Banerjee said she would be visiting the district on Thursday to take stock of the situation there.
”Strict action will be taken against all those responsible for the Birbhum incident, irrespective of their (political) colours,” she stated.
The CM, during a programme here, also maintained that she had to postpone her visit to the district by a day as ”other political parties were already huddling there”.
Taking a dig at opposition BJP, she said its leaders have ”limped their way to the site of the incident, stopping to savour ‘langcha’ (sweetmeat originating in neighbouring Burdwan district’s Shaktigarh area) in between”. Banerjee also alleged that such incidents of violence are results of conspiracy hatched to divert attention from issues of concern, such as price hike of petrol and other commodities.
BJP president J P Nadda had on Tuesday constituted a five-member committee, which includes four MPs, to visit the site of the tragedy.
