China, Has Set A Goal Of Having 450 Commercial Airports By 2035

After announcing 100 smart cities five years back, BJP announced its planning to open 100 additional airports by 2024, as part of a plan to revive economic growth in Asia’s third-largest economy, according to people with knowledge of the matter. The proposal, which includes starting 1,000 new routes connecting smaller towns and villages, was discussed at a meeting last week to review the infrastructure needed by 2025. With economic activity at a six-year low and prospects of further slowdown looming, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is keen to double down on infrastructure projects in a bid to revive growth and achieve a target of making India a USD 5 trillion economy by 2025.

India, with a population of one billion plus, is the seventh-largest economy in the world. The rapid pace of growth witnessed by the country is an indicator of the rising aspirations of its citizens. Economic growth directly linked to labor market efficiency has the potential to spring at a much faster rate of citizens in metropolitan areas are provided with better lifestyles. This is also the need of the hour, considering the country has witnessed matchless levels of migration from rural to urban India for education and professional reasons. One way to achieve this is through a focus on ease of living, build smart cities that are well equipped with public facilities, have adequate infrastructure to support the needs of contemporary Indian families, and last but not the least, are affordable. According to figures on the Union urban development ministry’s website, 49.5% of projects are yet to be initiated but without proper guidelines. Of the 60 cities selected so far, projects have started on the ground in the first batch of 20 chosen by the ministry last January. Work is yet to take off in 40 cities that were selected last September.

While 60 have been chosen so far, the ministry plans to select the remaining 40 by June. BJP-ruled states – Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra – are ahead in the race. Indore, Bhopal, and Jabalpur have started implementing 20 of the 159 projects that were approved for these three cities and completed 12. Surat and Ahmedabad have started work on eight of the 49 projects and completed two while Udaipur and Jaipur have completed three of the 91 projects that were selected.

Since the time the Narendra Modi-led government assumed office, it has highlighted the urgency of providing Indians with a better lifestyle, starting from basic sanitation to affordable housing to building a digital India. We need to acknowledge that our metro cities are bursting at the seams, and capacity building is the only way forward. Semi-urban areas need to be groomed and graduated to cities, so that education, jobs, public utilities such as electricity, public transport, and sanitation, healthcare is no more a ‘privilege’ of the few, but a matter of fact for every Indian citizen. This is contrary to the Left-leaning ecosystem that has glorified poverty and sees no problem when a significant chunk of the Nation does not have access to basic facilities like electricity or potable water.

Meanwhile, for a smart city to succeed the government needs to create more jobs. The smart city concept came from growing urbanization. That means an increasing population as a result of better-paid jobs. If you do not create jobs and you have more urbanization, it will be chaos. That is what is happening to the concept of smart cities in India. Everyone thinks that painting the walls, keeping the city in a fancy look is what makes the city look smart but building better roads, having better connectivity, better parking, etc means a Smart city.

Well! Smart cities, yet to establish their existence, now India’s plans to expedite airport development still trails that of China’s, which has set a goal of having 450 commercial airports by 2035, almost double the number at the end of 2018.

The Indian government has committed investments of 1 trillion rupees to build airports in the next 5 years. Just three years back, only 75 of India’s 450 runways were functional, as airlines avoided flying to smaller, World War-era airstrips in smaller towns. But Modi’s subsidy program, which partly funds airline losses while capping fares on remote routes, has helped add as many as 38 airports to the nation’s aviation map at the start of this year, while contracts were given to airlines to start flights to a further 63 airports with no or limited connectivity.

In a bid to privatize state-owned airports and allegedly to benefit a well-known corporate house, the Central government has planned to privatize six more airports. All six airports that have been listed for the second round of the privatization – Bhubaneswar, Varanasi, Indore, Trichy, Amritsar, and Raipur – will, in all probability, be awarded to the Adani group. The government has brushed aside the suggestions given by the ministry of finance to allegedly benefit Adani. The Ministry of Finance had recommended that any company or corporate house will not be awarded more than two airports, but NH has learned that the Modi government is planning to lift the cap that will pave the way for Adani to win all the six airports after the “bidding”. If the Adani group gets all the six airports in this round, it will become the largest group managing and developing airports in India. BJP government is accused of selling off everything from roads to airports to natural resources and profit-making public-sector companies including railways and Bharat Petroleum. All worker’s unions have protested privatizations of airports including RSS-affiliated Bhartiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS), but the Modi government did not pay any heed to their protest. It shows that the government’s priority is to benefit their corporate friends, not for the common man.

Meanwhile, the Smart city plan is slowly walking into its death. Which external investor would want to invest in cities with dismal infrastructure (potholed and congested Roads, inept public transport, poor Internet connectivity)? State Governments only launch those projects, which give them political mileage and help in image building for the next State elections.

Mumbai Metro Row: Devendra Fadnavis Praises Delhi Metro, Blames MVA For Delay In Mumbai Metro

Mumbai-metro-Devendra-fadnavis-Uddhav-Thcakeray-car-shed

The Mumbai metro project seems to be a never-ending political tiff among the state leaders, and yet again a war of words began between BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis and chief minister Uddhav Thackeray led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA )government. This political spat comes over the delay in the development of a Metro car shed in Mumbai.

Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis late on Wednesday took a ride on the Delhi Metro and wondered when will he travel on Mumbai Metro 3, claiming that the MVA government has messed up the project. Fadnavis posted his photos with a mocking comment on Twitter targeting the MVA alliance government back home.

The BJP leader took to Twitter and wrote, “I travelled in Delhi Metro today to return back to the airport and reached in a very short span as compared to travel by road!”

The tweet further continued, “Don’t know when will I be able to travel in Mumbai Metro 3 to the airport, looking at the things messed up by the MVA on car shed issues.”

Fadnavis tweet over the slow speed over the construction of Mumbai metro irked Congress leaders in the state on Thursday.

Taking a jibe at Fanavis Maharashtra Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant said he was glad that Fadnavis appreciated the “Delhi Metro, developed by the Congress government.”

“The only metro (in Mumbai) completed was also by the (erstwhile Congress-NCP) government. Your government could not meet 2019 deadline,” Sawant continued.

The Congress leader assured that with vast experience in governance, “the MVA will surely do what your (BJP-led Fadnavis government) could not, if the hurdles created by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government are removed.”

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s media advisor Harshal Pradhan cajoled Fadnavis to “feel proud of Maharashtra first” before lavishing praise on others.

“You should feel proud that India’s best CM (Thackeray) has saved and given a forest to Mumbai in Aarey Colony. We are a growing state with a visionary leadership. Be proud of the fastest developing state,” Pradhan suggested.

There has been a long political dispute about the location of the Metro car shed since the day the project was announced. During the tenure of Fadnvais government in Maharashtra, the BJP party had chosen Aarey Colony, a green belt in Mumbai, for the car shed, part of the Mumbai Metro 3 line. However, after coming into power in 2019 Uddhav Thackeray led the MVA government in November last year, shifted the depot site to Kanjurmarg. The Mumbai Metro 3 project comprises a 33.5 km underground corridor. Reportedly, there will be 27 stations out of which 26 will be underground.

Who Gave Supari To Deep Sidhu?

deep sidhu, sunny deol, red fort, deep, sidhu, delhi violence, farmers protest, tractor parade, tractor rallyDeep Sidhu is an aide of BJP MP Sunny Deol. Sidhu campaigned and provided every support to the Deol family during the Gurdaspur seat in Punjab during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. After the controversy, Deol had distanced himself from Sidhu in December last year after he joined the farmers’ agitation. Deep Sidhu, a BJP man who is very close to Hema Malini and Dharmendra, has been associated with the farmers’ agitation for the last many months. He is a small-time Punjabi actor who grabbed the limelight for all erroneous reasons. Massive outrage amid farmers’ tractor rallies on Republic Day saw a pool of reactions from all walks of life. Reacting to allegations, the actor confirmed that although he was present at the rally he did not remove the National flag.

He stated that the national flag was not removed from the flagpole at the Red Fort and that nobody raised a question over the country’s unity and integrity.”To symbolically register our protest against the new farm legislation, we put up ‘Nishan Sahib’ and a farmer flag and also raised a slogan of Kisan Mazdoor Ekta. The flag represents the country’s unity in diversity, he said while pointing towards the ‘Nishan Sahib’, a symbol of Sikh religion seen at all Gurdwara complexes. Sidhu, who has been associated with the farmers’ agitation for the last many months, said “anger flares up” in a mass movement like this when the genuine rights of people are ignored. “In today’s situation, that anger flared up”, he said. However, the Chief of the Haryana unit of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU), Gurnam Singh Chaduni has accused the Punjabi singer and actor of inciting and misguiding protesters.  “He (Deep Sidhu) led them to the Red Fort. Farmers never wanted to go to Red Fort,” BKU leader Gurnam Singh Chaduni said.  Leaders across the political spectrum also condemned the violence and the Red Fort incident.

The farmers were led by Nihangs equipped with swords and kirpans as they charged at the police and broke through barricades, the Delhi Police have said in its First Information Report (FIR) on the clashes. Delhi Police says over 300 policemen were injured in clashes with protesters who defied agreements and took their tractor rally to the center of Delhi on Republic Day. “The Additional DCP Central’s operator was attacked with a sword at ITO on Tuesday during the violence,” the police said. The incident took place just outside the Delhi Police headquarters at ITO, a key intersection in Delhi.

The operator, Sandeep, was quoted as telling news agency ANI: “Many violent people reached Red Fort suddenly. Drunken farmers or whoever they were attacked us suddenly with swords, lathis, and other weapons.” He said the situation was worsening and it was “too difficult” to control the violent crowd.

Deep Sidhu In Deep Shit

deep sidhu, sidhu, farmers protest, farmers, delhi, delhi violence

Born in 1984 in Punjab’s Muktsar district, Sidhu became the winner of Kingfisher Model Hunt and then he took part in Grasim Mr. India and became Grasim Mr. Personality and Grasim Mr. Talented. Sidhu has walked ramps in Bombay for designers like Hemant Trivedi, Rohit Gandhi, and others. Somehow he could not connect with Modeling World so he started practicing as a lawyer since he has studied law. His first placement was with Sahara India Pariwar as a legal advisor. Then he worked with a British law firm called Hammonds. They managed Disney, Sony Pictures, and other Hollywood Studios. Then he became legal head of Balaji Telefilms for three and half years. That’s where Ekta Kapoor told him to act but he didn’t start. He said in one of his interviews that “Dharam Ji identified Actor in him”. That’s how he switched to Punjabi films, in 2015. Deep Sidhu’s first Punjabi movie – Ramta Jogi hit the theatres. However, it was only in 2018 that he gained popularity with the movie “Jora Das Numbaria” in which he portrayed the lead role of a gangster.

He’s popular among farmers because of his voice against the government’s senseless three farm bills. ”Thousands of farmers knocked down barricades at Delhi’s borders, clashed with the police and entered the heart of the national capital on Republic Day as they took out a tractor rally against the government’s new agricultural laws. Amid the chaos, protesters were tear-gassed and baton-charged. The disarray was caused after the protesters – allowed to hold the “Kisaan Parade” between 12 and 5 PM – began the march much before time and deviated from the agreed routes.

Farmer leaders have accused Deep Sidhu of instigating protesters and leading them to the Red Fort during the Republic Day tractor rally on Tuesday. It is important to note that Deep Sidhu was part of the team employed by BJP MP Sunny Deol during his Gurdaspur election campaign in 2019. Sunny Deol, while expressing sadness at the Red Fort incident said in a tweet, “I had earlier, on December 6 through Twitter said that neither I nor my family has any links to Deep Sidhu.”

Sidhu entered politics during the 2019 Indian general election and campaigned for Gurdaspur BJP MP Sunny Deol. He is said to be close to Deol and during the farmer’s protest, farmer unions used Sidhu’s pictures with Prime minister Narendra Modi and Sunny Deol to show the link of BJP and RSS in protests—a claim which was later denied by Sidhu. His arguments well, but the crux of his opinion is that Punjab must have the right to define its destiny. The Centre should not have any control over Punjab as Punjab is a distinct culture. One farmer died near central Delhi’s ITO after his tractor overturned, said police. However, some protesters claimed he was killed in the police firing, they began a sit-in.

As the country celebrated its 72nd Republic Day, farmers had been given permission to take out their tractor rally in Delhi after the annual parade at Rajpath, a ceremonial boulevard. Crowds, however, swelled at the borders at around 8 AM even before the parade started. Some cops were injured while trying to stop the protesters. Stunning visuals showed farmers breaching barriers at the Singhu border near Haryana, the epicenter of protests against the farm laws that began in late November. More than 5,000 protesters had gathered on the outskirts. A dramatic video from Delhi’s Akshardham showed policemen firing tear gas shells from an overbridge as protesters on road looked for cover. At Mukarba Chowk, protesters reportedly hurled stones at cops. In the Nangloi area, the Riot Control Police was on standby.

By afternoon, a large group had reached the iconic Red Fort. They were seen within the ramparts of the iconic Mughal-built monument, trying to put up their yellow flags at the spot where Prime Ministers hoist the national flag. Farmers’ body Samyukta Kisan Morcha said it dissociates itself “from all such elements that have violated our discipline”. “We appeal strongly to everyone to stick to the route and norms of the Parade, and not indulge in any violent action or anything that taints national symbols and dignity. We appeal to everyone to desist from any such acts.” Only a single person instigated so many against the wish of 5 major leaders? They were not informed? Is it a script for a movie? Put the leaders inside, it may cause law and order problem, but once you do it, the protesters will know where they stand. If you put these leaders inside for sedition, as per the law which binds them as leaders of a group indulged in such activity, many things will come out.

Another Blow For BJP, Ahead Of BMC Election Sameer Desai Joins Shiv Sena

In another setback for the BJP, Sameer Desai, a former Mumbai BJP secretary and nephew of late Congress leader Gurudas Kamat, on Wednesday joined Uddhav Thackeray led Shiv Sena. Since the last few months, several prominent leaders of BJP including Eknath Khadse quit the party and have joined Shiv Sena.

Desai who had joined the BJP in 2014, now officially associated with Shiv Sena on Wednesday at Matoshree in presence of the party president Uddhav Thackeray and other senior party leaders.

A two-term Congress corporator, Sameer Desai has also been the spokesperson of Mumbai Congress. Later,  Desai had switched from Congress to the BJP. Soon after Desai’s admission, he was given the post of BJP secretary by the party.

Desai’s admission in Shiv Sena comes ahead of the civic body polls. It is also reported that with the entry of Desai, the Sena hopes to gain ground in the Goregaon (P/South ward) where the BJP has made inroads in the last BMC election.

After formally inducting Desai into the party Shiv Sena took to Twitter and shared the pictures with a welcome tweet.

Maharashtra Tourism and Environment minister Aaditya Thackeray also wrote, “Sameer Desai ji welcome to the Shiv Sena family and best wishes for the future.”

Earlier in January, this year two key BJP leaders Vasant Gite, a former MLA from the Nashik Central Assembly seat, and Sunil Bagul from Nashik had joined Shiv Sena.

During Nashik MLA joining to party, Shiv Sena chief spokesperson and Rajya Sabha  MP Sanjay Raut claimed that several more BJP leaders were on their way to joining the Sena.

Over 550 Twitter Accounts Suspended After Tractor Rally Violence On R-Day

Twitter-Tractor-rally-Farmers-protest-tractor-rally

The farmer’s tractor rally, which was supposed to be a peaceful rally on Republic Day in the national capital, had turned into the violent ground. In connection with the same, Twitter on Wednesday suspended over 550 accounts from its platform.

The visuals from the Red fort and ITO in Delhi were highly disturbing and violent. Thousands of farmers from the different states have been protesting in Delhi for over two months against the new controversial laws enacted by the Centre in September last year.

A Twitter spokesperson stated in regards to suspended accounts that the platform has also labelled tweets that were found to be in violation of its “synthetic and manipulated media policy”.

“We have taken strong enforcement action to protect the conversation on the service from attempts to incite violence, abuse, and threats that could trigger the risk of offline harm by blocking certain terms that violate our rules for trends,” the spokesperson cited.

“Using a combination of technology and human review, Twitter worked at scale and took action on hundreds of accounts and Tweets that have been in violation of the Twitter Rules, and suspended more than 550 accounts engaged in spam and platform manipulation,” concluded the spokesperson.

The microblogging platform said that it had applied labels to tweets that were found to be in violation of synthetic and manipulated media policy.

During the violence, several public and private properties were damaged by the mob. According to Delhi Police, a total of 22 FIRs have been registered regarding the violence, in which over 300 police personnel were injured.

So far the Delhi Police has detained 200 people in connection with the violence that took place on January 26 at Red fort.

The Kerala High Court on Wednesday has sent notices to Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli, actors Tamannaah Bhatia and Aju Varghese, who are the brand ambassadors of Online Rummy games in connection with a petition seeking legal prohibition on online rummy games.

According to the petitioner to the high court that several people have lost their lives in the country after losing huge amounts of money by playing the online game and that it should be banned.

Another victim Sajesh,(32) who had lost a huge amount playing online rummy said,  “The intervention of the honourable High court is welcome as I know that several people have lost a huge amount of money playing this online game and I myself have lost more than Rs 6 lakh.

“The brand ambassador indeed plays a big role in attracting the gullible youth in playing this game which soon turns into an addiction. I had to seek professional medical help to come out of this addiction and the court must ban this game in India”, added the victim.

New Enacted Farm Laws Will Not Be Implemented In Maharashtra: Speaker Nana Patole

Speaker-Nana-Patole-Farmers-Protest

On Tuesday while addressing farmers rally at Mumbai, Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Nana Patole stated that the three controversial agricultural laws that were passed by Parliament last September will not be implemented in the state.

Earlier on Monday Farmers from 21 districts of Maharashtra have gathered at Azad Maidan in Mumbai in solidarity with thousands of their comrades gearing up for a massive tractor rally in Delhi against these new pieces of legislation.

Speaker Patole today addressed the gathering in Mumbai as part of the flag-hoisting ceremony to mark India’s 72nd Republic Day.

Patole cited, “The Maharashtra government will form a committee to look into these laws. The government will not implement the farm laws in the state. I am first a farmer, then the occupant of a constitutional post. So, I have come here to support the farmers.”

Thousands of farmers have been protesting at different borders of Delhi since November 26 against new contagious agriculture law- the Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020, the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020, and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020.

Mumbai Farmers Protest: Farmers Leave Mumbai After Woman Protester Unfurls Tricolor At Azad Maidan

Farmers-protest-mumbai-azad-maidan

Thousands of cultivators, who had arrived from different parts of Maharashtra to protest against the Centre’s farm laws, left for their homes on Tuesday after an elderly woman agitator hoisted the national flag at the Azad Maidan in Mumbai.

According to All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) the flag hoisting was held at the ground in south Mumbai at around 9.30 am following which the protesters headed towards their native places.

The farmers held a rally at the Azad Maidan on Monday to express solidarity with peasants agitating near Delhi borders against the Centre’s three new farm laws. The framer’s rally was attended by several state leaders including NCP supremo Sharad Pawar, and Maharashtra Congress chief Balasaheb Thorat.

Reportedly, 15,000 farmers had arrived in the state capital for the rally.

The Samyukta Kisan Morcha, a pro-farmer body, had given a nationwide call for a struggle from January 23 to 26, including rallies to Raj Bhavans (Governor Houses) in states.

Accordingly, the protesters in Mumbai took out a march towards the Raj Bhavan after the public meeting at Azad Maidan on Monday. However, police stopped the protesters mid-way.

A delegation of farmers was to meet and submit a memorandum to Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari.

But, after they learned that the governor was in Goa on Monday, the farmers’ leaders accused Koshyari of not meeting them despite giving an appointment himself.

In its defenses, the Raj Bhavan said representatives of the Samyukta Shetkari Morcha were informed in advance that the governor would not be able to meet the delegation on Monday as he would be in Goa to address its Assembly.

NCP president Sharad  Pawar was also lashed out at the Maharashtra Governor and stated that the state has never seen such a Governor before. He has the time to meet Bollywood celebrity Kangana Ranaut but not the farmers.

Delhi Police Fire Tear Gas In Clash With Farmers At Tikri, Singhu Borders On Republic Day

Indian farmers protesting against agricultural reforms breached barricades and clashed on Tuesday with police in the capital, who fired tear gas to restrain them, shortly after a convoy of tractors trundled through the city’s outskirts. Growers, angered by-laws they say help large, private buyers at the expense of producers, have camped outside New Delhi for almost two months, posing one of the biggest challenges to Prime Minister Narendra Modi since he came to power in 2014.

“Modi will hear us now, he will have to hear us now,” said Sukhdev Singh, 55, a farmer from the northern breadbasket state of Punjab, as he marched past the barricades. He was one of the hundreds of protesters, some on horseback, who broke away from the main route of the tractor protest to head for central New Delhi, which hosts an annual Republic Day military parade.

They commandeered cranes and used ropes to tear down roadblocks miles from routes approved by the police, forcing constables in riot gear to fall back and let them pass, Reuters witnesses said. Reuters could not immediately reach police officials for comment.

Responding to reports of the clash, protest organiser Samyukt Kisan Morcha said only one of its parades had deviated from pre-arranged routes. “Except for one group…our news is that all parades are happening on the pre-decided routes along with police,” the grouping of farm unions said in a statement.

Earlier, tens of thousands of bearded and turbanned farmers, many bundled against the winter cold, began the day by driving a convoy of tractors festooned with the Indian tricolour and the flags of their unions through the city fringe. Agriculture employs about half of India’s population of 1.3 billion, and unrest among an estimated 150 million landowning farmers worries the government.

Nine rounds of talks with farmers’ unions have failed to end the protests, as farm leaders rejected the government’s offer to delay the laws for 18 months, making a push for repeal instead. “The farm organizations have a very stronghold,” said Ambar Kumar Ghosh, an analyst at New Delhi think tank the Observer Research Foundation.

“They have the resources to mobilize support and to continue the protest for a long time. They have also been very successful in keeping the protest really focused.” The protests threaten to overshadow the annual military parade to mark the 1950 adoption of India’s constitution.

“They could have chosen any other day instead of January 26 but they have announced now,” Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar told media on Monday. “Conducting the rally peacefully without any accident would be the concern for farmers as well as police.”
