Mumbai Commuters Desperate To Board In Local Train

covid-19, coronavirus, covid, local train, mumbai local

Thousands of commuters in the Mumbai metropolitan region have been desperately asking for local train services to resume for the general public as soon as possible. After Delhi metro services resumed two weeks ago, this uproar has increased, with office-goers staging a protest outside Virar station from September 7. The suspension of train services has led to the passengers getting angry and staging protests outside railway stations. Railway experts have stated that the train services in the city should resume immediately because Metro rails have started operating. Metro rails and aircraft are air-conditioned, where the risk of the spread of the virus is much higher. Precautions are being taken and the services have started. Similar precautions, including crowd control, should be undertaken and suburban train services should be thrown open for the public. Railway officials pointed out that partial train services were started at the request of the state government. They are taking every possible step to ensure social distancing norms are maintained by way of QR code-enabled contactless checking, etc. but once the local is resumed for all, this control is not possible. Government and authorities are worried about the lives of people and people are worried about their livelihood, if not COVID they will succumb to starvation and unemployment if there is no arrangement for their commuting. Mumbai is a city that never stops, people keep running tirelessly but all of a sudden long pauses have taken many lives on task. The common man is at his worst in the situation. The government needs to find some viable options and resume the city’s lifeline.

Meanwhile, we should not forget, Mumbai – India’s biggest Covid-19 hotspot is not ready to handle the full-fledged re-opening of its local train services. In a metropolitan region with over 3.3 lakh Covid-19 cases and 75 lakh daily train commuters, how and when can train travel resume safely is the biggest question of an hour.

Daily crowds of city travel using local trains in Mumbai and suburban trains are the lifeline of this metropolis when they remain shut for a prolonged period, millions of people lost their livelihood, which is already in a horrible state. It’s been four months now that the local trains have stopped functioning. I hope a better sense prevails over the government and it gives some relaxations in running the local trains with adequate social distancing, although it will still be a high-risk act of resuming local train services, there is a trade-off between lives and livelihood. People will take their own care; they will take precautions whatever is required. Let them decide as to whom to avail of those services and who do not. For a linear city like Mumbai, the suburban train services played a vital role in facilitating the north-south movement of the city’s workforce. The two suburban systems operated by both Western Railways and Central Railways stretch 319 km. It facilitates the inter-district travel of commuters in five districts namely Mumbai, Mumbai Suburban, Thane, Palghar, and Raigarh.

Mumbai is designed for just two modes of working – on or off. The city has the lowest road to total area ratio among the metros. It also has the highest population density. If the government eases the lockdown and asks businesses to start so that it can start collecting its taxes and people get salaries, companies will start nudging people to come to work. Fear of losing pay/ jobs and the frustration from being locked up in a small house for more than four months will drive people to make their way to work. Given the linear design of Mumbai, people will have to come to work from distant suburbs. Even if we assume the normal population decides to commute the roads will not be able to take the strain. BEST bus queues will start getting kilometers long and tempers will rise. This kind of chaos could increase pressure to restart railways. Unlike the metro, the local trains are not designed for restricted access. The government might decide to have RPF at the entry to the railway station to limit the number of people who enter. Given that trains discharge several thousand passengers every hour there will be long queues outside the railway station. This will again put pressure on the roads. The Central Railways used to operate 1,774 services while the Western Railway would operate 1,367 services each day before the pandemic. These services operate on an average frequency of around one every four minutes ferrying around 7.8 million commuters per day. The city has been developed in such a way that the majority of offices are in southern Mumbai and residential places are concentrated towards north Mumbai and beyond (up to Dahanu on the Western line and up to Kalyan-Dombivali on Central). And the shape of Mumbai being vertical puts a heavy load on the Western line. And Central Railways is also crowded due to the unavailability of any alternative. The solution is to have an alternative to the present mode of transportation. Western and eastern highways help, however, the count of commuters is too high.

With each passing day, people are worried that their employers might find new people and they might lose all their jobs. What they will eat, is a big question. Many small offices are shut, thousands of people lost their jobs, many caught in a financial mess, and EMI’s to households there are never-ending challenges. Why can’t the government understand that people need local trains to survive?

Drug Case: NCB Summons Mumbai’s Famous ‘Muchhad Paanwala’

On Monday, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has issued summons to Mumbai’s famous Muchhad Paanwala in connection with the ongoing probe into various drugs cases in the city. It was reported that Muchhad Paanwala’s name popped during an interrogation of British national Karan Sajnani in a drug case.

According to the anti-drug agency Karan is a businessman who has been living in the country for the past fifteen months and was arrested along with Rahila Furniturewala who is a former manager of a Bollywood actress and her sister Shaista. The agency has seized a total of 200 kilograms of contraband from the accused and revealed it is one of the biggest such seizures in recent time.

NCB Regional Director Sameer Wankhede cited that Muchhad Paanwala’s name is amongst the top ‘paan’ vendors in Mumbai. Besides this, he is also a founder of Panditshree Shyamacharan Tiwari of Tiwaripur, Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh which is currently run by his four sons, including Jaishankar Tiwari.

The Mumbai based Paan shop is located at Kemps Corner, near Malabar Hill. The Muchhad Paanwala is in this business for more than 40 years and became a rage among the people. Starting from top film stars to businessmen to politicians or others for his lip-smacking post-meal chewy munchies and its huge variety of paan including Kolkata, Banarasi, or Maggai paans, with specially-sourced ingredients.

In fact, in 2016, it became the first ‘paan’ outlet to host its own website to take online orders from its customers.

Mumbai Locals To Start From Next Week

The Maharashtra government has recently told the Bombay high court that the final decision regarding opening locals for all will be taken in the coming week. The local trains were back on track since June last year after the nationwide lockdown imposed on March 25, but the initial services were only for essential workers. Now with the number of COVID-19 cases being contained, the authorities are in the talks to take the services to pre-Covid days, adhering to COVID-19 guidelines.

The Mumbai Suburban system has been transporting millions in the commercial capital of India for many years. Western Railways operate the local trains in Mumbai from Churchgate, the city’s business centre to Dahanu Road covering a distance of 123 Kms and 36 stations. Central Railways operate local trains on Central line, Harbour line, Trans-Harbour line, Nerul–Uran line, Panvel-Karjat line, and Panvel-Diva-Vasai line. The system is known to be commuting 35 lakh passengers every day round the clock.

In December, practising lawyers and registered clerks of advocates were permitted to travel even during morning peak hours. Evening peak hours between 4 pm and 7 pm, however, remained restricted. Now the authorities are mulling whether to allow passengers before 7 am and after 10 pm. But till January 5, there was a night curfew in Maharashtra, which has not been extended so far. From October, Mumbai locals allowed women passengers between 11 am to 3 pm and after 7 pm till the last train.

In October, the railway authorities also permitted lawyers to travel in local trains except during morning peak hours between 8 am and 11 am and from 4 pm to 7 pm in the evening. In November, teachers, as well as non-teaching school staff, were allowed to board suburban trains.

30 Crore People To Be Vaccinated Against COVID-19 In Next Few Months, Says PM Narendra Modi

Ahead of the first phase of the COVID-19 vaccination drive in the country starting from January 16, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said India has worked in an exemplary manner to showcase federalism in the fight against the pandemic, and proper dialogue between Centre and states played a major role in it.

Speaking at an interaction with chief ministers on vaccination rollout, the Prime Minister said 30 crore people will be vaccinated against COVID-19 in the next few months.

He said quick decisions were taken with full sensitivity and, as a result, COVID-19 has not spread in India on the scale on which it spread in some other parts of the world.

“The proper dialogue between Centre and States has played a major role in combating COVID-19. In the fight against the COVID-19, we have worked in an exemplary manner to showcase federalism. I’m satisfied that we worked together by standing united in the COVID crisis, quick decisions were taken with full sensitivity,” the Prime Minister said.

He said India will start the world’s largest vaccination programme from January 16 and two Made in India vaccines have been given emergency use approval.

“We aim to vaccinate 30 crore people in the next few months. Around 3 crore healthcare workers and frontline workers will be vaccinated in the first phase of vaccination. In the second phase, those above 50 years and those under 50 years with co-morbid conditions will be vaccinated,” the Prime Minister said.

Wall Of Armed Cops With Politicians, A Status Symbol

security, devendra, fadnavis, raj thackeray

The Maharashtra government has reduced security cover for former Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and his family, Union Minister Ramdas Athawale, and MNS chief Raj Thackeray, as well as withdrawing cover for state BJP chief Chandrakant Patil and former Chief Minister Narayan Rane. The government also scaled back security for former Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik and cancelled protection for senior BJP leader Sudhir Mungantiwar. The government said changes in security cover were based on “prevailing threat perception”. The government also announced increased (or new) cover for a few, including Congress leader Shatrughan Sinha, Sunetra Pawar (Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar’s wife) and Varun Sardesai, the Secretary of the Yuva Sena and nephew of Chief Minister Thackeray’s wife Rashmi Thackeray. The annual recurring expenditure is way too much for Maharashtra ministers, as a whole, would be spending many times more than any other states. How many of these would have really deserved such munificence from the State? The day the Taxpayers really are in a position to question the authorities, things would change. Is it a well-known fact that Security provided is not to really secure the person but to provide hollowness around him to lend undeserving importance to him. Let’s assume for argument sake that a particular legislature has some threat perception, which is very subjectively decided, someone would have to take a view whether a man walking on the street, who has faithfully cast his vote, has some expectation of safety and security of his body, family and property. But the resources are spread elsewhere.

The changes – 16 withdrawals, 13 new protected, 11 downgrades, and two upgrades – triggered a political row; with Maharashtra BJP spokesperson Keshav Upadhyay accusing the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi of “vendetta politics”. But one must realise that getting an official security cover has become a status symbol. The importance of an MP or an MLA is judged not by the work given to him but by the level of security provided to him/her. So, all our elected representatives, be they in the Parliament or the state assemblies vie with one another to have the highest level of security provided to him/her. This official security personnel is used to not only protect the concerned person but most often are used to intimidate the rivals as well. Sometimes, this can get blown up to physical beatings also. Some of these protected, also get physical with their rivals, who do not retaliate due to the security present and who do intervene to prevent any harm coming to the person. Most of our elected representatives are more of a burden to society with their privileges and the freebies to which they become entitled. But this was not always so. I have seen the late Dr. Y. S. Parmar, the founder of Himachal Pradesh, and then it’s serving Chief Minister, walking on the Mall, Shimla alone without much security detail, Maharashtra’s Shard Pawar hardly seen with security cover, similarly, Late Manohar Parrikar never opted for such privileges. Those who work in public interest need no security, it is the public that guards them. Some of our leaders were in real need of security but to most of them, it became another status symbol to be had, even if not needed.

Fadnavis is a frequent critic of Chief Minister Thackeray and the MVA since being elected out of office in October (after a bitter falling out between the BJP and long-time ally the Shiv Sena). This time he got another chance to attack him but the reality is that even the BJP government did the same with the Gandhi family in centre. Home Minister Anil Deshmukh whispered that the security was per threat perception. Its political culture cultivated by Indian politics right from the British period who had personal threat always. However, after independence, India should have a better system of managing the security rather than creating multiple levels of protection including ‘Z’ and ‘Z+’ security spending in millions. Congress party is the first culprit and is still enjoying itself just because there were incidents of a personal tragedy like Indira Gandhi or Rajiv Gandhi’s death. Politicians should be blamed for demanding such security because of their loose talks or immature behaviour or spreading hatred. Except for President and PM, nobody should have high-level security and nobody else because when a person enters political or public life, he should mentally be ready to sacrifice and without such security, he will be more careful in his behaviour and even if something happens, there is no need to panic as people in politics are not great intellectuals. When we analyse the expenditure on such security, it’s a waste of resources and money definitely and this logic can be extended to so many areas of govt spending as they are mostly unproductive. Avoid unnecessary foreign trips not only by PM but also every state or central level of all foreign trips as these people don’t learn anything worthwhile, but use the country’s money for their glossy foreign tours.

The number of armed personnel around ministers presumed to indicate his power over the common man. The number and types of weapons openly displayed, degree of the rude behavior of security personnel is in direct proportion to the power of the neta, and to crush an ordinary citizen and guaranteed immunity from any legal action. Many netas have criminal cases against them for heinous crimes. No one dares complain about their linkages with goons and gangs. “Business” rivalries among dons being the norm, security is a must for them. Persons making recommendations for security and the approving authorities are a part of the same criminal justice system. So, the rule is simple. You scratch my back, I scratch yours. Politicians should be, in the true sense, “workers” or “servants” for the citizens. Unfortunately, politicians have become seats of power – which is more often than not, misused, and abused. Naturally, then, they are under attack from the citizens. Who would love and respect a political leader who is undermining the interests of common citizens? And in a democracy that is as divergent as India, nobody can please everybody.

On Monday, the Union Husbandry and Dairying Minister Giriraj Singh urged people not to believe in rumors about bird flu which is also known as avian influenza. The minister stated that there is no risk to humans if the animal or poultry products are cooked properly before consumption.

“There is a situation of panic in the country. It is important to not spread rumours about the bird flu. The cases of bird flu have been frequently reported in India since 2006. There’s no risk to humans if animal products are cooked properly before eating,” cited Singh.

Reportedly, a total of nine states including Maharashtra and Delhi have confirmed bird flu cases. Speaking on bird flu cases confirmed in the national capital, the Union Minister said he will be writing to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal regarding the closure of the Ghazipur poultry market for 10 days.

The minister said, “Delhi Chief Minister has closed the Ghazipur poultry market for 10 days. I have said this before and will say it again. All poultry products can be consumed after cooking property and they pose no harm to people. He (Kejriwal) should not close the market and take precautionary measures like other states.”

The states that have confirmed cases of bird flu are Kerala, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Delhi in the county.

The Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying on Sunday said that the central teams are formed for monitoring the spread of bird flu are visiting the affected sites.

The price of broiler chicken in India has fallen by almost a third in a week with consumption dropping after an outbreak of bird flu was reported in almost nine states in the country.

Bird Flu Cases Confirmed In 13 Districts Of Madhya Pradesh So Far

bird flu, madhya pradesh, flu, birds death

Bird flu cases have so far been confirmed in 13 districts of Madhya Pradesh, while around 1,100 crows and other wild birds have been found dead across 27 districts since the flu virus was first detected in the state last month, a government official said on Sunday.

A poultry market in Agar Malwa district has been shut for a week after the bird flu virus was detected in one sample there, the official from the public relations department said.

The district administration has started culling and burying poultry birds as per guidelines, she said.

The state government a few days back-ordered closures of poultry shops in Neemuch and Indore for a week after the bird flu infection was found in some chickens there.

The avian flu was first detected in samples of two out of 50 crows whose carcasses were found in Indore’s Residencyarea on December 29, 2020.

“The presence of the avian flu in crows and other birds (including poultry birds) has so far been confirmed in 13 districts – Indore, Mandsaur, Agar Malwa, Neemuch, Dewas, Ujjain, Khadwa, Khargone, Guna, Shivpuri, Rajgarh, Shajapurand Vidisha,” the official said.

Till Saturday evening, deaths of about 1,100 crows and wild birds were reported from 27 districts of the state, she said.

The official further said that 32 samples from various districts were sent to the National Institute of High-Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD) in Bhopal for analysis.

The bird flu virus was not detected in the samples sent to NIHSAD from Sehore, Balaghat, Damoh, Ujjain, Betul, and Bhind districts, she said.

US Democrats Push Toward Second Trump Impeachment, Republican Support Uncertain

donald trump, trump, republican, us, senate, impeachment, us presidentDemocratic-led efforts to impeach US President Donald Trump for a historic second time gained momentum over the weekend, although it looked far from certain whether enough Republicans would back the move with just days left in his term.

Democratic members of the House of Representatives will introduce articles of impeachment on Monday after Trump encouraged his supporters to storm the US Capitol on Wednesday, Representative Ted Lieu said on Twitter. The California Democrat, who helped draft the charges, said the articles had drawn 190 co-sponsors by Saturday night. As of Saturday afternoon, no Republicans had signed on, Lieu’s spokeswoman said.

“We have videos of the speech where (Trump) incites the mob. We have videos of the mob violently attacking the Capitol. This isn’t a close call,” Lieu tweeted Saturday night. Trump initially praised his supporters at the Capitol but later condemned their violence in a video. The decision to call for calm came at the urging of senior aides, some arguing he could face removal from office or legal liability, sources told Reuters.

Impeachment by the Democratic-led House, equivalent to an indictment, would trigger an unprecedented second trial in the Republican-controlled Senate, which cleared him during his first trial over allegations that he threatened US national security. Two previous presidents were impeached but were also acquitted in the Senate. Richard Nixon resigned in 1974 over the Watergate scandal when it became clear he would be removed.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has also asked members to draft legislation aimed at invoking the Constitution’s 25th Amendment, which allows for stripping the powers from a president unable to fulfill the duties of the office. The intensifying effort to oust Trump has drawn scattered support from Republicans, whose party has been divided by the president’s actions. Democrats have pressed Vice President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment, but he has opposed the idea, an adviser said.

CNN reported late Saturday that the vice president had not ruled out invoking the 25th Amendment, citing a source close to him, but that some in Pence’s team worried any effort to remove Trump could provoke the president to rasher behavior that might put the country at risk. A Pence spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment late on Saturday.

SCATTERED REPUBLICAN SUPPORT FOR REMOVAL

A small but growing number of Republican lawmakers have joined calls for Trump to step down, and several high-ranking administration officials have resigned in protest.

Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska said Friday that Trump should resign immediately and suggested she would consider leaving the party if Republicans cannot part from him. Senator Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania told Fox News on Saturday that Trump had “committed impeachable offenses” but declined to commit to voting to remove him.

Senator Ben Sasse of Nebraska, a frequent Trump critic, told CBS News he would “definitely consider” impeachment because the president “disregarded his oath of office.” But other key Trump allies, including Senator Lindsey Graham and House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy, have urged Democrats to shelve any impeachment effort in the name of unity. “Impeaching President Donald Trump with 12 days remaining in his presidency would only serve to further divide the country,” said White House spokesman Judd Deere.

Mitch McConnell, the Republican Senate majority leader, has suggested any trial would likely occur after Trump’s term ends, when Democrats will take control of the Senate thanks to victories in two Georgia runoff elections last week. If found guilty after leaving office, Trump would still lose benefits enjoyed by ex-presidents, such as security and pension, and he would be barred from running for a second term.

But a Senate conviction requires a two-third majority, which would take at least 17 Republican votes. Democratic President-elect Joe Biden has not taken a position on Trump’s impeachment, saying he will leave it to Congress to decide. Since losing the Nov. 3 election, Trump has falsely claimed he was the victim of widespread fraud.
