President’s post may be cosmetic in a country like India where powers of governance rest with the Prime Minister and his cabinet but we still need to have a man in that post who is uncontroversial and a man of stature as he represents the nation at various functions globally. All political parties should have a consensus on the presidential candidate who has the support of all and one who is respected by the people.
A president should be somebody out of political circle and one who has done enormous service for the country be it in the field of sports, science, technology or business. He could either be Narayan Murthy, Ratan Tata or even Sunil Gavaskar or Lata Mangeshkar as they not only are household names but very popular and have brought laurels to the country in their respective fields.
Political Party’s hitherto have appointed people to the post out of retirement benefits to a person or some other favours which truly demeans the very position of the President. Hope better sense prevail and chose a president who doesn’t have a political background but a public figure who commands respect of all!
