Raj Thakaray AVFollowing his party’s aggressive, confrontational and whirlwind show against illegal hawkers in and around railway premises in Mumbai, Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) continues to kick-off campaigns on multiple concerns aimed at favouring citizens of Maharashtra. While addressing a rally in Thane on Saturday, MNS-chief criticised and warned banks for ignoring Marathi as a business language despite guidelines from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on using the local language. On the same track, MNS workers on Monday met officials of Punjab National Bank, Union Bank and Allahabad Bank in Bandra Kurla Complex and handed over letters to the bank managements, asking them to ensure the induction of Marathi language besides Hindi and English for their day-to-day transactions. They have threatened an agitation if banks fail to adhere to it soon.

Since Elphinstone Road station stampede incident in September, that claimed 23 lives, MNS started a campaign against hawkers plying their goods near railway stations, blaming them for obstruction, congestion in and around the area. Even though the eviction drive turned violent after hawkers retaliated by attacking MNS workers, and many criticised Raj and his team, but the party walks away with credit for its step towards an encroachment free city. Citizens are now able to walk freely on footpaths and drive properly after vendors were evicted from public places.

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena also charged the state government by alarming them against hospitals which act emphatic on taking security deposits from patients and their families before admitting them. Whereas few weeks back, MNS functionaries had put up posters in Pune against hospitals which insisted on accepting security deposits before admitting patients, they had also forewarned them of “MNS-style” action.

After suffering a string of electoral setbacks and the recent betrayal of its six of seven corporators who joined Shiv Sena, Raj Thackeray is trying hard to regain its political ground in the state by voicing for the ‘sons of soil and common men’.

Ajay Shinde AVAjay Shinde, MNS Pune unit chief said,All the recent protests led by MNS are not illegal by any means. Our demands are in the favour of residents of Maharashtra. We are only following Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) regulations and this will certainly help the users. Though government has already framed rules but they fail to imply and work properly. Our protests initiate only from common people’s demand including MNS’ take on hospitals, banks or even hawkers. Government is filing false cases against our party but people are happy with the functioning of MNS; we don’t fear police cases against us as our motto is only to help our fellow citizens.”

Ram Kadam AVRam Kadam, BJP MLA said, “Protesting against each and everything is the political need of MNS at present political scenario in Maharashtra. But, their protest should be honest by all means and as people believe and expect there should not be any money settlement, likewise MNS did in 2014 where they vandalised at least 22 toll booths across the state after Raj Thackeray incited people not to pay toll tax. Protests by MNS are merely the way of the party to derive money.”

Sanjay Potnis AVSanjay Potnis, Shiv Sena MLA said, “All protests undertaken by MNS are nothing but fake stunts and Shiv Sena will remain unaffected by it. MNS will never be able to attract Sena’s vote bank. Though MNS believes in fake political stunts but Marathi manoos will always find Shiv Sena beside them and they will always support the latter.”

Krishna Kale AVKrishna Kale, a Mumbai resident said, “I feel MNS’s protest against hawkers was a good step as now we can walk freely around railway stations but the party should also think something for those who earn their daily meal by only selling their goods around stations. Induction of Marathi language in banks’ daily transactions and threatening hospitals against their cruelty towards patients are also two very impressive steps taken by the party. Local languages are used for conducting banks’ daily business in states like Gujarat and Karnataka; Maharashtra should also follow the rules framed by RBI.”
