Rape epidemic in India-Part I

My day begins with reading newspaper and what totally annoy me is the various sexual crimes committed against women ranging from rape to molestation, age differs in each case. From all parts of India we have rape reports which are getting more barbaric and horrifying. Even cops jumping into this act, can things get worse than this?

The Nirbhaya rape case shook me and the entire country. I couldn’t even imagine the brutality she underwent. Her death was something I can never forget. I cried my heart out on her death as all other Indians did. Yes we do project our outrage by having candle lights March. But that continues as long as the story is published on the front page. Then we shift our focus to other things. Eventually, we forget. But alas her rape was no lesson to be learnt from.

Rapes are getting more barbaric and horrifying. Who is to be blamed? Looks like India is suffering from rape epidemic. Why do men rape? This is one answer which eludes me and I’m sure all womankind as well. Is it lust or just a show of strength that they are superior or they can’t take rejection? Do they feel remorse after the act and do they feel for the victim’s agony? They don’t rape the victim, they rape her soul for their act of two minute pleasure or should I say insanity?

To make matters worse, we have police who first refuse to file an FIR as it would reflect on the police station crime statistics. Subsequently, the police go on to ask the victim insensitive and uncomfortable questions further traumatising her.

Who is to be blamed? Does the onus always lie with women’s dressing sense, her right to reject their advances or her going out late night? Or the men who indulge to rape women, child or for that matter anything that has two legs and is a women irrespective of age ,marital status or just about anything as long as the criteria is women.

Why do we need to teach three and four year old the difference between a good touch and bad touch? Why can’t we tell the boys that touching a woman inappropriately is wrong? Why do we as a woman need to dress so as to not attract unwanted attention which can arouse some sick feelings within men?
