Tax return glitches

IT (Information Technology) glitches on IT (Income Tax) site on October 31 which was the last date for filing tax audit returns had chartered accountants fuming with ire as they toiled till midnight to upload returns of their clients without much success. Govt did the right thing by extending filing date to November 7 but the breakdown of the site should have been notified to the citizens earlier in the day to ease their worries.

Tax returns have increased after demonetisation and GST but the software system it seems is not able to cope with the increase in numbers and filling which increase on deadline date puts pressure on the system which causes breakdowns. Government should increase spend on technology and the best tested software needs to be put in place to upload income tax as well as GST filling. These surely are teething problems at a time when we are moving to an honest tax regime and I am sure these hurdles would be taken care of in the days to come!
