Police in western Maharashtra’s Kolhapur town is baffled after a thief stole items worth around Rs 75,000 from a state government office and pinned a “I am sorry” note on a table there.
The thief, who targeted the Animal Husbandry Office, decamped with three computers and a photocopy machine, on Saturday evening, when all staff had left for the day.
The incident came to light when the office reopened, following which a police complaint was filed.
“In last 20 years, I have yet to come across a similar incident,” a police inspector of Juna Rajwada police station said.
He said the thief had not only expressed regrets for stealing the articles, but has also assured that he will return the items after five years.
Police will probe whether this was an act by student in need, the official said.
