A woman threw ink at Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke during his indefinite hunger strike at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on Saturday, triggering chaos at the protest site.
People present near Dipke immediately apprehended the woman and handed her over to the police.
Delhi Police took the woman into custody for questioning. Her identity and the motive behind the incident were not immediately known.
Sharing a video of the incident on social media, Dipke wrote, “Blue is my colour… Jai Bhim!”
Further details regarding the incident were awaited.
Dipke had begun his indefinite hunger strike earlier in the day after climate activist Sonam Wangchuk was shifted from Jantar Mantar to Safdarjung Hospital by Delhi Police.
Wangchuk was taken to the hospital after completing 20 days of his indefinite fast, which entered its 21st day on Saturday.
Dipke alleged that Wangchuk had been forcibly removed from the protest site and asserted that the agitation would continue. The CJP also confirmed that its proposed “Chalo Sansad” march to Parliament on July 20 would proceed as scheduled.
Delhi Police said a medical team had reached Jantar Mantar in the morning to conduct Wangchuk’s routine health examination in compliance with directions issued by the Delhi High Court. According to the police, some protesters obstructed the medical team, resulting in a brief commotion.
The police stated that Wangchuk was shifted to Safdarjung Hospital on medical advice due to his deteriorating health. Doctors reportedly found him weak and suffering from dehydration caused by prolonged fasting, following which he was admitted for observation and further medical evaluation.
However, Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali J. Angmo, disputed the police’s interpretation of the High Court’s order. She said the court had directed regular monitoring of Wangchuk’s health but had not ordered his hospitalisation.
Angmo said Wangchuk remained under observation and was undergoing medical tests, adding that no treatment had yet been administered. She said the family wanted certain test results to be verified by an independent laboratory before consenting to any medication.
“He is still fasting,” Angmo said, adding that Wangchuk continued to consume only salt water, as he had throughout the protest. She said he was physically weak and losing muscle mass but remained mentally alert and determined.
According to Angmo, Wangchuk’s potassium level had reportedly dropped to 2.9 from 4.3 a day earlier, prompting the family to seek independent confirmation before allowing medical intervention.
Meanwhile, security was heightened outside the residence of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan amid continuing tensions surrounding the protest. Additional police personnel were deployed as a precautionary measure, although officials said there was no specific threat to the minister.
