Are Rustom and Love Affair both inspired by the real life Nanavati case?

While we are in awe of Akshay Kumar’s suave look as the Naval Officer Rustom Pavri, this black and white image from the film Rustom reminds us of a case that had once created history in real life. The actor’s look with a moustache resembles the real life naval officer Kawas Manekshaw Nanavati who was involved in the most controversial case of crime of passion that can be traced back to 1959.

Akshay Kumar-AVThe case that had once changed the course of law owing to its twisted nature had K M Nanavati as a prime suspect who was accused of killing his wife’s lover and his old friend Prem Bhagwandas Ahuja. What further adds to our suspicion, is that Akshay Kumar and the makers of Rustom though have maintained silence when it comes to details of the film, during the promotions of Airlift, the superstar had revealed that Rustom too (like Airlift) was inspired by real life incidents. So while we try to put two and two together, it got us wondering if Rustom is truly inspired by this case.

However, here we would also like to mention that this intriguing case of Nanavati that stretched upto the 2000s has attracted the attention of other filmmakers too and one of them is Soni Razdan (wife of Mahesh Bhatt and mother of Alia Bhatt). Soni is also currently busy directing a film based on the K M Nanavati case as announced by the makers, titled Love Affairs which is produced by her step-daughter Pooja Bhatt. Soni and Pooja had, more than a year ago, announced that they are coming together to portray this crime of passion story of Nanavati, his English born wife Sylvia and Prem’s love triangle in their film Love Affair with Gulshan Devaiah, Kalki Koechlin and Ali Fazal playing lead roles. They had also spoken to public prosecutor Ram Jethmalani who was actively representing the case and the lawyer had revealed the details about the Soni Razdan’s directorial.

If Rustom is truly a remake of the K M Nanavati case, we wonder how the makers of Love Affair are going to react after hearing this. What more is that Pooja Bhatt previously too had raised the issue of copyright infringement during the release of Akshay Kumar starrer Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty (which too incidentally was an Akshay Kumar film) owing to the film’s title since she had owned the title ever since the release of the Dino Morea starrer Holiday.
