The Mumbai Police has arrested Barun Kashyap Bhuyan for cooking up false stories for gaining publicity and trying to create enmity between two groups. In a facebook post, Barun had mentioned that he was travelling towards his workplace in an autorickshaw on August 19, 2016. The auto driver had suspected him of carrying a bag made of cow hide. Kashyap nonetheless informed the driver that the bag was made of camel hide and he had purchased it from Pushkar. Later the autodriver stopped the vehicle near the temple and called two other men as they too started grilling Kashyap. They finally let him off as his name sounded like a Brahmin.

He filed a complaint with the police the next day. After carrying out the investigations, police came to a conclusion that such incident had never occurred. A complaint was registered against 24-year-old Bhuyan under the IPC sections 153 A (promoting enmity between different groups) and 182 (giving false information to a public servant). A question which arises here is why did Barun fail to register a complaint on the same day when the incident had occurred?

Barun learnt that a case a filed against him by the police. He then sought the assistance of Aam Aadmi Party leader Preeti Sharma Menon. She introduced him to Advocate Mihir Desai and Advocate Vijay Hiremath who agreed to take up his case. Why did Barun seek the assistance of AAP party instead of approaching senior officials?

According to a police official, “Around 49 rickshaw drivers were interrogated but none of them matched the details given by the complainant. Besides, Kashyap was also called to identify the rickshaw driver and around 50 drivers were shown to him, but he couldn’t identify the accused.”

“We later recorded statements of 13 rickshaw drivers about the incident. However, all of them denied any such incident.”

When police investigated this case they found that there were some loopholes in it. When they conducted further probe they found nothing that matched the story. When Assistant Police Inspector Daya Nayak had met Barun several times for probing the incident why did he file a false complaint with the police? Why did he issue contradictory statements against the police?

Arun Chavan, assistant commissioner of police of DN Nagar division under whom the probe was initiated said, “We were trying to locate Barun Kashyap, and found his location at Chembur. He was sitting in a car. So we inquired with the driver who told us that Preeti Sharma Menon had asked him to drop Barun. We took both to the police station. Barun was arrested, while the driver was allowed to go after we recorded his statement.”

DCP Ashok Dudhe, Mumbai police spokesperson, confirmed the arrest and said that Kashyap would soon be produced in a magistrate’s court
