A city-based builder was arrested for allegedly duping around 2,000 flat-buyers to the tune of Rs. 60-70 crore, police said.

Mohammad Azam Abdul Azim Khan, who was on the run for 13 months, was apprehended from the Fort area in Mumbai. Several cases were registered at Arnala police station against Azam and others under relevant sections of the IPC, Maharashtra Ownership Flat Act (MOFA), 1963 and Maharashtra Protection Of Interest Of Depositors Act, 1999, said Senior Police Inspector Ashok Honmane, who is attached to the Crime Branch of Palghar District Police.

Around six persons were already apprehended in connection with the case, he said.

The builder allegedly wooed middle-class and poor families into buying flats from him. He allegedly misappropriated the money and never gave the possession of the flats to the buyers, police said.
