Crime against women—increasing brutality in society

Responding your esteemed daily City Page 4 (Special police units to tackle crimes against women, minors, December 16), it was really good to know that special police units are trying to resolve this major problem. Crimes against women have more than doubled over the last 10 years, according to the latest data released by the National Crime Records Bureau. More than 2 million crimes against women were reported over the past decade; 26 crimes against women are reported every hour, or one complaint every two minutes, where is our society going towards?

We need to introspect on the reason for the increasing brutality in society. There is something seriously wrong with the society we are living in. We also need to sensitise the public to the disadvantages of early and forced child marriages and highlight the value of girls’ education. It is very true that we should stop seeing these crimes in isolation. We need to see it as part of a bigger problem, which is our acceptance of violence.

I congratulate special police units on their great job.
