December 16 Gangrape Convict Attempts Suicide Inside Tihar Jail

Vinay Sharma, a convict in December 16 ‘Nirbhaya gangrape’ case attempted suicide inside the Tihar jail on Wednesday. Following this, he was admitted to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, where his condition is said to be critical.

Sharma tried to hang himself from an iron grill of his cell using a cloth at around 9.30 pm on Wednesday night. He was spotted by a ‘Special Police’ personnel on duty who stopped him.

Sharma had consumed a heavy dose of anti-depressants before trying to commit suicide, according to jail sources.

Sharma was suffering from depression and was on medication sources said. Sharma, along with three others, had approached the Supreme Court against the Delhi High Court’s 2014 verdict that observed their offence to be rarest of rare. The verdict upheld the death sentence awarded by the trial court.

The three other convicts are Mukesh, Pawan and Akshay Kumar Singh. Sharma isn’t the first person associated with the gang-rape to attempt suicide. In 2013, Ram Singh, then a prime accused in the Nirbhaya gang-rape, hung himself while lodged in Tihar jail.

Singh was the driver of the bus in which Nirbhaya, a paramedic student, was raped and tortured by six men.
